Great information as always, thank you. If average climate temperature + 10° reduces testing period to 18 months, does +20° reduce it to 9 months? SO in the UK, could I test at 45° for 9 months to simulate 36 months at 25°? Thanks in advance :)

Hi, I'm a bit lost. If we do 1 month of different temperature storage + humidity, and freeze/thaw for 12 days, what else comes under accelerated stability? You said we can do accelerated stability testing and continue it for the shelf life, and that should be enough to go to market. So when does one hit the markets exactly? After the 1 month and 12 days of freeze/thaw, or after the 3 months post that? What happens in the 3 months exactly other than centrifugal test? What if it is an anhydrous product?

Anhydrous products are those without water - eg powder or oil. You really need a minimum of 3 months accelerated results before making a larger production batch and then wait another 3 months before releasing to the market for a high level of confidence. Remember accelerated testing is never a guarantee. Hi Belinda! Thank you for the video. In the freeze/ thaw testing, do you stir or agitate the product in any way between cycles? Or just observe any changes. Example, even a good emulsion would have some water on the surface from the thawing process, right? Is the full stability testing you offer included in the cosmetic chemist degree?

Where can stability and challenge testing be done in New Zealand?
HI IPCS, Thanks for video and reliable info for shelf life. ,,,Is there any tests by which we can prove our product is safe and we can save ourselves .,,,.if someone sues us that this skin reaction is because of our products used by them, although i will be performing preservative challenge and stability tests.... Do people perform dermatological test or clinically tested for this reason....Thank you
Yes there are tests that can be performed but the best test totally depends on the product type, its application, ingredients used (in combination and on their own), the target market for the product to be used on etc - so it needs individual consideration. Hi, microbial challenge test is easy as it sounds. Coz I have done multiple tests. What puzzles me is elevated temprature. Do labs keep beakers and conical flask to check 40°c and 55°C temp stability or glass vials with tin or aluminium cap of cosmetic product?? To check primary packaging stability especially PP bottle are also kept with product under elevated temperature or just light, uv, humidity, of primary packaging is tested??
Please don’t conduct your own challenge testing/preservative efficacy testing (PET) - it should only be done by professional labs with the right equipment and facilities. You can conduct your own microbial testing, but that is not the same as challenge testing/preservative efficacy testing (PET). You should be conducting your microbial and stability testing using the same packaging as you will be selling the product in, so that you can test how it will perform using that packaging, not beakers or flasks. Thanks for the video, it is very helpful. I would like to know what kind of glassware or material can I put in the incubator to perform stability test ? We are using wheat straw bottle to put our personal care product, Should I put it in the incubator, or should I use lab glassware like plastic petri dish, glass petri dish, beaker , ...?

In Pharmaceutical Industry stability testing is conducted per climatic zone depending on where we want to commercialise the medicinal product (Zone I, II etc).
By climatic conditions it is understood both, temperature as well as humidity.
Is there an exemption for cosmetics that allows us to conduct the stability under termal stress only?

Mam i'd like to know if the incubator is microbial incubator or a climatic chamber? so u remain control of both temperature & humidity?
It is a climatic chamber - you can get them with humidity controls as well but for cosmetic testing purposes, the temperature is the most important. Humidity is important when testing pharmaceutical/drug substances or for checking permeation of packaging.

Thank you for the video, it was very informative. I’m interested on how to run stability testing on make up. I haven’t tried but I imagine the strong pigmentation will make it difficult to view microbial tests and check ph levels (using strips). Would that be the case?
You only need to test pH where water is involved - yes, strips can be hard to read. What do bubbles mean in a cream? I created a sample that showed stability (no separation ) however stored in a glass jar I now see bubbles in the emulsion

Probably because of exceeding the optimum shear rate during the mixing or the homogenizer not work well
Hey! I Have a question, I created a face wash and I used Liquid Germall plus at 0.7 percent but for some reason by product had a weird smell only after a month of sitting, it says the the usage rate for LGP is 0.5 but I apparently needed more, im not sure why it have a smell so soon!!!

I don't know if this is still needed but here it goes. You can get the basic equipment(eg. an incubator and a microbial test kit with slides) to start with, like she said and then you'll need to send it to NAFDAC. They'll do at least 3 months testing for you and send you the results plus a certificate if it passes.
What happens if your product fail the test would they give you advice?
Depends on who owns the IP or who is at fault. If you have a certificate in stability testen, can you do it on your own at home?
Yes you can - you need to outsource PET but the rest of the tests, including standard micro counts, you can conduct in a clean lab area (even if that is in your home).

How do you find out if actives are still bioavailable at the end of the 2-3 years ?
There are several ways: check overall quality/stability of the formulation using regular cosmetic stability parameters; assay for the active if you are able; run performance evaluations. Hai, can the stability test conducted in oven rather tahn in incubator?
No, you need to maintain it at the low temperatures stated for a set period of time, which is not realistic for an oven.
