    One of the first wisdom words that my father told me as soon as I learnt swimming is. No matter how confident you feel about your swimming, Don't get into unknown and unfamiliar water bodies and be extremely wary of getting into water to save some one, especially when other person is a not a swimmer. Non swimmers typically panic very easily in water and in the desperation will hold on to rescuer very tightly, making it impossible for the rescuer to swim and manuver. You need to extreamly good swimmer if you intend to rescue a non-swimmer or for that matter any drowning person. I am just glad that both you learnt your lesson without any loss of life or limb.

    One of the first lessons you learn, when becoming a life guard is to never approach a person, who is in panic, upfront, because they will do what ever it takes to stay above water in panic

  • @beaksofeagles
    @beaksofeagles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +103

    In Australia we learn to swim from a young age, and are taught about how a drowning person will pull you under. They have no control over their panic. Years ago we were taught to knock a person unconscious before attempting to pull them ashore!!! Now we are just taught to approach from behind, and only as a last resort. Flotation objects, even a stick, should be used first.

    • @killyourego1983
      @killyourego1983 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yeah man I am a lifeguard , we been told crazy shit as you said : knocking etc - conscious person always only with flopy, or even clothes direct body to body imposible couse they will take you down with you with panic - we been told that if this happen if they hug you let them sink down with you and than underwatter try to escape and work on it . Its crazy. Enjoy OZ hope you surf haha muh love

      Atleast the drowning guy had the guts to dive into the water. As per me that's something commendable. I could never imagine myself jumping into deep waters when I didn't know how to swim.
      To be honest it was Bernado's mistake, being a swimmer he could not acess the risk he was about to take. It's obvious that a drowning guy will panic and will take hold of any support he gets.
      I would rather call your comment as
      ' Chutiyapa '.

      @@saurabh7609 I can barely swim but have attempted such dives so many times. Everytime there is some random person to hold me and take me to shallow depths but luckily such things have never happened to me probably because the person who has to hold me is always experienced and knows how to do this. You are right that it was the mistake of the vlogger he shouldn't have agreed to this as he had no idea of handling it.

    It's amazing how stupid non-swimmers will be when they see swimmers playing in water. People worry about what will kill them as tourists in Australia, and I tell them that their greatest danger is drowning! So many tourists from India and Asia cannot swim. They have no idea how easily they can lose their footing and/or be dragged under, even in waist-deep water.

    Once me and couple of my friends went for a random trip to Alibaugh in Maharashtra. When we just reached one of the nearby places called Kashid, We decided to halt at Kashid beach for sometime. Suddenly a crowd gathered at the beach. When i went a little closer to have a look, There were around 6-7 dead bodies which were washed ashore. These guys were from some village, Who had jumped in the water and had apparently never seen a sea before. It was such a sad day that day. You should always respect water body, No matter what. Yeah sadly, many times people drown when trying to save others who are drowning due to a variety of reasons: the other person is struggling too hard and taking you with them, they faint and you have to swim with deadweight now which is much harder than people think, your stamina runs out, your feet gets tangled by seaweeds, etc. So please be careful. Amateurs saving people should always take a rope/stick/tied clothes with them so that others can pull them out and provide assistance incase something happens. Its good to help but better to do it carefully! Stay safe!! Live well!!

    I have to say that the PTSD from a near-death experience in the water is overwhelming. When I was urged to try to walk through a running torrent of water only 10 or 12 feet across but 5 feet deep, by my boyfriend at that time, AT NIGHT, with a helmet with a light, huge boulders sticking out above the water to inevitably knock me unconscious, and my being carried down almost like a leaf, if he hadn't been strong enough to plant his feet and like throw me across, it would have been my life, not his. We made it, but I remember that all the PTSD from all the other events in my life rendered me unable to speak for a long while the rest of the night as we were at a party with others who had no idea what we went through. Even if you can swim, the water in Nature is very clear and unrelenting, Praise all the gods the other people saw what was going on and helped!! But I get it, and I love the water, but I'm so careful now. Jaya Ganesha you were with others!!!

    Damn, I'm glad you're okay. This is unfortunately a common occurrence. People who are drowning go into survival mode and will oftentimes tragically drown the very people who are trying to save them. I think life guards are taught to approach drowning people from behind for this very reason, and if they still somehow latch onto you, swimming downwards will usually make them let go. If they still don't let go or if you're unable to do that for some reason, use any force necessary to stun them for long enough to get away.

    Hampi is close to my house. I have been there twice. Its a beautiful place and river tungabadhra makes it more serene and peaceful. I too had a near death experience while learning swimming. But i never regretted it. Death is gonna happen one way or the other. But living scared is more regretful than death due to adventure.

    I was almost drown once in a river. A man jumped in to rescue me and I remember as I was struggling to breathe and panicked at the same time, I kept pushing this man down. I didn’t do it on purpose but that was what my body did trying to grasp everything to survive. I realized in those moment I could end up killing this man, in that split second of struggle I asked God to help me, I heard a voice telling me to calm down and let this man go. I felt peace and let him go, as I kept struggling in the water and in panicked, I couldn’t see this man anymore but next I felt a hand grab my waist up from under and I realized it is this man. He let me wear out my energy a little and then came from under or the back (I don’t remember but a position he will not be pressed by me) to rescue me and he swam on his back while carrying me to the side. It seems like eternity but it is actually only for few seconds.
    Tips for a person drowning, call to Jesus for help and if you have a rescuer, try to be calm and let the rescuer grab you from under/back)
    Tips for a person trying to rescue a drowning person; position is key because a person drowning fighting for life and panic are going to keep pushing you down so make sure you come from the back or below and lift the person up and swim or else you will end up die too.

    I had a similar experience when i was 13. I told a friend of mine to climb my back and thought i could swim him ashore. I obviously couldn’t swim with him on back and we started drowning. He strangled me in panic and climbed on my shoulders to be able to breathe. I gave up trying to free myself of him and had a extra body vision of myself with my friend on my shoulders. Then i lost that vision and I started walking under the water on the river bed until i made it across with my friend on the shoulders.

    I have a friend who is a professional lifeguard at a beach. He told me he once had to knock out a guy who was panicking so bad that he made it impossible for him to keep both of their heads over the surface of the water.

    You're right bro, I had same experience and that time it is very stupid because I was at the age of 17, we did it in a well and nobody there to help us.
    Only one thing I did is-i used a rope to climb up on my previous driving otherwise we both almost lost in it.
    It's been more than 11 years but I still see the visuals from my mind.. It's very hard to forget about it.
    And it's more painful if we loose one the life..

    i learnt how to swim when i was still like 5 so it's been pretty long now..
    few years later at one day when me and my cousins were swimming, my little cousin hasn't been too good at swimming
    i remember at the pool, when we swam together, but the panic just gets inside her and she starts forgetting the movement of how to swim and she grabbed me, pulled me, and pushed me inside the water just so that she could get her head above the surface and breathe
    i was really flustered because i wasn't ready, i hadn't even take a breath before she just tries to save herself, i was still young and i could already think to myself "i think i'm gonna die if she didn't stop doing it soon"
    it feels so long but i managed to get my face up the surface and breathe again, it was a relieve, but now i understand her, she was a kid at that time and i should have known the risk to go swim with her.

    A lesson learned, its because the person who can't swim was holding onto you preventing you from swimming. So provide instructions prior to jumping. The person jumping was probably clinging on for dear life w/o knowing the whole situation.

    It remembered my scariest memory too.. When I was learning how to swim, some of the elders in the pool asked me to swim from one end to another, that they told me they would help if I was stuck in the middle. And fortunately I wasn't able to make it to the end and those guys didn't showed up that they actually afraid if they would be drowned too. And some other guy jumped into the pool and helped me to get out!! But in this meantime of 2 to 3 mins I thought its the end, I memorized my parents and that's it.
    Indeed you are very true, we should never ever try to take things for granted in other words per se.

      @@gabrielasanchez2028 Firstly a huge thanks for respecting my life and yes you were right, that they may have learnt their lesson. If I were in their place, I hope I would've not said in the first place to do such a dare to anyone. And if I said so, then I would've tried saving him/ her and end up just like Bernardo Bacalhau or even worse.. I just don't want to imagine that 😅

    I will share this, because it is so important. I took lifesaving, and if someone is acting like that, it is better to get away from them, or they will drown you, in your case you could not. We also grabbed people by the hair and pulled them that way, it does not hurt actually, but leaves you room to get away if you need to. Hugs!

    Something like that happend with me too. Unfortunately it was a friend of mine on a boat during a storm. I grabbed my life jacket and put it on him if we drowned. Suddenly the waves are bigger and longer than out mini boat. Almost drowing and he grabbed my shoulder with a croc grip. (i felt that) I punched him by gathering all the energy i had but still he grabbed my arm. It waa difficult to get out of that boat while drowning with someone a life jacket on. Luckily we survived. Rescu came.

    When we were little, we used to go to our village for summer vacations, there we had a big pond where people used to bath, so, one day while playing in the pond, uncles from my village taught me how to swim, I was like 6 years old then, I was so happy when I was able to swim, then at one place which I thought was shallow I decided to stop, but it was actually deep and in panic, I was trying to fight the water that was rushing in and making me drown, I was saved by my elder sister but after that I haven't swam properly. It would be nice to learn swimming once more but times have kind of changed and we don't get the chance to go their much either.
