Honestly Calvin had such a kickass concert series director around this time. They got everyone in there-- Grizzly Bear, Yo La Tengo, Neko Case, Stars, Broken Social Scene, My Brightest Diamond, Tallest Man on Earth...
I was at this show. He was opening for Rosie Thomas and Denison Whitmer. About 3 years after this, I got to meet Denison at Waterloo Records in Austin. I told him that I saw him when Sufjan opened for him. He laughed and said “that won’t happen again.” Sufjan was quite nervous and would clap when he finished a song. I remember someone shouting “how do you say your name? Because we all said Suff-Jann at that point.
@@TheMightymolar I think that's may because after release of Illinois, Sufjan became more well known in the indie music. He got his propre tour and don't need to opening for anyone.
This is such a precious and rare recording. Thank you for uploading. I can feel Sufjan’s hesitation and excitement, I want to reach out and grasp his hand and reassure him that this is music straight from the softest and most powerful place in the universe.
@@liancemusic it was my first time seeing him. Here is a video I shot of him playing sister: th-cam.com/video/VPxs5FUjIkU/w-d-xo.html This was in between Seven Swans and Michigan, and he gave away his large map of Michigan he had on stage to the first person who names all 5 of the Great Lakes. He was supported by Gravenhurst, who is sadly no longer with us.
Thank you. I saw the show in Chicago on this tour (Schuba's). I tried to record it, but discovered that my new recorder didn't have a microphone preamp! Oops. Good to at least have a recording from the same tour.
My favourite live performance of his ever. Don't get me wrong, every one he does is great, but this one feels so genuine and pure! Also this one has some great renditions of his songs which I prefer more than the original versions. Like "Size too small" and "A Sun came".. so good. Thank you so much for sharing it!
Sufjans songs, stories and musicianship touch me so deeply. No words. Out of this world 💕🎶🙏🏻. I listen to this Calvin College recording over and over and over… 🎶 I learned about Sufjan from Patagonia, AZ friends. After fun visit, I was tearfully driving the dirt road away from my beloved friends and received a text, “”Find KPUP on your radio!” And so I did! A song with a banjo and angelic voice aired. I took a video of myself leaving Patagonia wearing a Bisbee, AZ baseball t-shirt with “For the Widows” as my music track… what a moment. I love, love these friends who are already uber, then they lead me to Sufjan. I’m a huge fan now and hope to hear him live…soon!
7:54 For the longest time, I thought Size Too Small was about gay romance. "I still know you the best, man." Plus, people are often best friends with the same sex. I'm kind of bummed. I thought I found my most relatable song.
seeing as he has other songs which are very clearly gay i wouldnt rule it out purely based off the introduction he gave the song - I've never heard of a best man for a bride being particularly common. It could have just been Sufjan not wanting to be explicitely gay and therefore explaining it away with his introduction
Thanks so much for this recording! Takes me back to the times I saw Sufjan perform in Amsterdam in 2005 and 2006. But I've never heard him this dressed down with just 1 guitar or banjo for a whole set. Incredible!
Amazing that in two years he put out Michigan, Seven Swans, and then Illinois. Especially impressive considering how expansive and complex Illinois is.

That's a concert series that would change your young life.
jesus
So true!
I saw so many favorites and discovered so many more through those years!
* Introduces Chicago*
Suf: "You guys don't know if you'll like this one" 😏😛
Oh, but they will :)
hearing Chicago before it was one of his biggest. Wow

I'm curious why the “that won’t happen again.”? The music sounds good without the visual.
TheMightymolar probably meant that Sufjan was already more popular than him so Sufjan would probably have his own opener.
@@TheMightymolar I think that's may because after release of Illinois, Sufjan became more well known in the indie music. He got his propre tour and don't need to opening for anyone.
Sup Miah? I remember taking my girlfriend to this concert :) I am pretty sure most of us were at this show
Whitmer, you say?
"I've never felt so lonely" in A Sun Came gets me every single time
A Sun Came and Size too small are absolute diamonds.
god the lakes of canada cover makes me want to cry. so beautiful
His voice is just so gentle. I listen to this recording again and again and again and it never fails to amaze me

I love that you can hear Suf counting out the frets for where the capo goes just before Size Too Small
The quivering voice in seven swans is just too exquisite.
I can’t stop listening to A Sun Came ❤ I love Sufjan Stevens
i don't know how this isn't more popular, because every second is exquisite. everything I love about Sufjan.
This Lakes of Canada gives me chills. Wow.
A Sun Came most underrated song ever
A size too small got me tearing up right now
It amazes me, the amount of things that this man can make me feel with just a banjo and his voice.
What a precious upload
this rendition of Size Too Small > anything else in the world
"Sufjan, Denison, and Rosie" hell of a lineup.
I think sufjan has the voice of an angel. His voice is so safe! Thanks for posting this I can’t believe the quality, it’s amazing.
"His voice is so safe". Oof, yes. What a lovely recording to return to. ♡
We love us some Sufjan's high quality recording!
Just the most talented, lovable person on God’s green Earth.l
i'm only here for Ken Heffner
This is such a sweet live of Sufjan's 😭 I had never watched it before, what a treasure

Thanks for posting! Amazing quality for such an old show, it's so rare to find Sufjan performing alone now.
I lost it all at seven swans
Wow. Just wow. Love all the songs life more than on the recording.

It's so cool that you got to see him on that tour! I've been to Schuba's and I can only imagine seeing him there live.
I wish there was video…maybe Calvin college has it somewhere…
Damnnn that version of a sun came is heavenly! Cant wait to hear the rest:) such a precious live performance
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard...thank you

sufjan lies in his stories a lot.
Such an awesome concert

Adorable voice. He is a very talented gay. I love his songs !
what?
@@bobafat1830 pretty sure "guy" was the intended word
@Stinkyfinger except Sufjan isn't

LOVE IT, this is sooo good!
Amazing that in two years he put out Michigan, Seven Swans, and then Illinois. Especially impressive considering how expansive and complex Illinois is.
All we need is the recording from FFM 2007 that the office has, hehehehe.
I asked about it but they couldn't find it! It'd be a treasure trove as Sufjan played back-to-back sets that night.
It was one the iMac. Maybe they got a new computer/cleared the hard drive - sad!
iMac is still there I think. Let me ask them asap. If so we can find two high quality recordings of Majesty Snowbird.
Oh man I really hope it's still there! This video is great anyway! Best of luck!
omg
Beautiful. Thanks pal
This is awesome! Thank you for this.
