0:07 Instrument: Turkish Cura. Full Song Title: Benim Adım Dertli Dolap=Endless Trouble Is My Name. Song is the voice of a tree hewn into a waterwheel as a metaphor of living to serve a greater good despite life being hard+fleeting. Composer: Turkish Sufi mystic Yunus Emre (1240-1320) contemporary of Rumi. From Eskişehir, 200 miles from Istanbul. His poetry was deceptively simple but delved into mysteries of the divine and being human. Emre employed spoken Turkish of central Anatolia as opposed to Arabic+Persian used by his contemporaries. Emre's poetry lives on as a gem of the language+culture of 13th century Turkiye and Sufi learning thru art and openended questioning.
Thank you.
Thank you for validating why I was so moved 🙏
Endless Trouble Is My Name is a wrong translation. It's not "endless trouble" it's troubled waterwheel.

Songs like this is how to leave negativity behind and start believing in people again.
Nothing here trying to sell you anything. Nothing here trying to upstage an ego.
Just a melancholy sound sharing a pain we can identify. Just a man, the earth, the sun, and an instrument. Conveying to the wind.
Almost telling the clouds themselves to cover the sun in overcast skies.
Songs 👍
All blessings
Nothing like a melancholy pluck of your instrument whilst the sun lurks pensively behind the clouds, aroused and yet solemn.
Ahh it's hard for me to explain because there is like this man selflessly telling a story and other people are just using their guitard to get attention and it's hard for me explain why I like the first one like this guy and don't like others in what I can only lamely explain as "doing it wrong". He's about the music. Some guitar people are about themeselves. He's playing that guitar. Some people show off they have a guitar., Again sorry I am sure there are better words. I only speak English and still sound goofy ha. ESL people dabbing on me God Bless You All.
Its the height of arrogance to say you don't believe in people and then depend on a vast infrastructure, built and maintained by people, for everything you do.
You believe in people, you just like to think you don't. What you were missing was gratitude.
Oh boy, what side quest did I just activate?
It's a special hidden quest, but if you realised you have activated it you should be fine.
Just keep your eyes and ears open, take head of both the woes and the fruits of opportunity this land affords as it abounds with both, some will likely lead to great adventure but also take care not to become engulfed by them as this could lead to great peril. Make sure to spend your points wisely and some time you may realise when you have progressed in this quest again.

In early summer of 1994, I crossed the Syrian border at Tell Abyad, pedaling a mountain bike and heading to Sanliurfa to witness Eid al-Adha. That morning, I pulled the bike off the road to adjust the cables outside a village on the E99. As was often the case, locals took an interest in me, with my bicycle festooned with bags and gear. A family gathered across the road and stared at me with curiosity. Among them was a young boy. I saluted them, then turned to work on the bike. Seconds later, a terrible noise, then screams and wails. I turned. The little boy, in his excitement, tried running across the road to reach me. A passing truck struck and killed him instantly.
Men from the village ran out from their work places and ordered me to pedal off, to leave the place before real trouble began. I dont recall those miles very well, just tears and sweat, heat and confusion. In Sanliurfa, the streets ran with blood. I made it to Balikli Göl, watched the fish meander in the pools, and wept uncontrollably.
Some gentlemen approached me, and convinced me to follow them to a contemplative place, not a mosque, but something like a study center. It matters not what was discussed. Because it is sung.
When I am lost, I come to this. It fills me with certainty and allows me to to ground myself so that I may focus on whats important and do what is best to make it through hardship.

LYRICS TRANSLATION
The Troubled Watermill By Yunus Emre
Why do you groan, O Watermill; For I’ve troubles, I groan
I fell in love with the Lord; For It do I groan
They found me on a mountain; My arms and wings they plucked
Saw me fit for a watermill; For I’ve troubles, I groan
From the mountain they cut my wood; My disparate order they ruined
But an unwearied poet I am; For I’ve troubles, I groan
I am The Troubled Watermill; My water flows, roaring and rumbling
Thus has the Lord commanded; For I’ve troubles, I groan
I am but a mountain’s tree; Neither am I bitter, nor sweet
I am but a pleader to the Lord; For I’ve troubles, I groan
Yunus, whoever comes here will find no joy; Will not reach his desire
Nobody stays in this Transient; For I’ve troubles, I groan
Obrigadooo!!!!
I would say “moan” instead of groan. Yet your translation is apposite. The watermill is moaning cause its doing a hardjob. But it is still in acceptance with it.

Back again after two years...yep I still love it. From the USA with love...
I listened it for the first time 1 year ago.
Now, it is like a therapy. I have listened to it every week.
Lately started believing this is the most beautiful and really felt piece of composition.
Seven years ago, I visited Turkey for my first and (so far) only time. As I was walking through the old part of the city with a friend after dark, we stumbled upon a small meyhane (pub) in a dark alleyway. There were only three guys at the table, one of which played this instrument. We decided to grab a beer and listen to him. He was playing a melancholic tune and singing. It was one of the best cultural experiences I've ever had in my life. I couldn't get that melody out of my head for days and to be frank, I didn't want to.
could you remember any words of that song? i will try to find out for you.
Best way to experience the real essence of any country is to get off the beaten path. Follow your nose and ears, sometimes it will lead you to some very interesting finds.
Ok, maybe more with your ears, I've been places where I regretted having a nose except where food was involved :)
Turkish music is wonderful.
he shared his culture and national history with you through that music whether he knew it or not
@@calebray4168 That's what is so wonderful about folk music,
Almost four years ago I found and wrote down the English lyrics to this video. I found them today and had forgotten about them. I will post them below, in a rough translation compiled between several sources--it is a poem that was written many centuries ago by the poet Yunus Emre'nin, titled Dertli Dolap, about a waterwheel. My life has changed so much in four years since finding this video. I have moved countries, married, started a new life in a new home. But I often still feel as though I am the same as the water wheel. Turning, torn down, broken, and only moving in place. But there is beauty in this world, like this lovely song, and there is a melancholic beauty in the struggle of life. A sadness behind the words that can translate into hope. Thank you again for this beautiful song and video.
Waterwheel, why do you moan?
For I am sorrowful, that is why I moan.
To the Lord I've given my soul,
For I've troubles, I moan.
Troubled water-wheel is my name,
My water flows pure,
As the Lord wishes thus,
For I am sorrowful, that is why I moan.
They found me as a mountain tree,
They broke my arms and cut my wings,
They thought me fit for a water-wheel,
For I've troubles, I moan.
From a mountain I was brought down,
Neither sweet, nor bitter, am I,
A devoted of God, am I,
For I am sorrowful, that is why I moan.
They felled my trunk and carved my branches,
Every piece of mine to be remade,
Yet, this commandment came from God,
For I've troubles, I moan.
I lift my waters high, I turn,
Only to pour them low,
They do not see this burden I carry,
For I am sorrowful, I moan.
Yunus, he who comes and finds no joy here,
His expectations never to be met,
As none can remain in this fleeting world,
For I've troubles, I moan.
Dervish Yunus,
Tears shed sin,
I'm in love with God, I swear,
I descend for Him.
Thank you! Was hoping I could find a translation that does it justice
However I had just auto translated the Turkish version rendered by Yusuf Gencen in the comments, and realised your version seems to be missing a last verse? Perhaps this is another version, but this was the last verse:
Derviş Yunus eydür ahı,
Gözyaşı döker günahı,
Hakk'a aşıkım vallahi,
Onun için inilerim.
Which auto-translates as
Dervish Yunus Eydur ah,
Tears shed sin,
I'm in love with God, I swear
I descend for him.
I think that verse changes the meaning of the song profoundly.

Little did we realize, when after all the gold, fine silks, expensive perfumes, spices and goods were collected and sold, and we all parted ways, the company we kept, the hopes and dreams and sorrows we shared were worth much more than all the treasure in the world.

For a historical context, the poem by Yunus Emre was written in 13th century Anatolia during the Mongolian invasion of Seljuki land. Brutal nature of the invasion, death and destruction is reflected as a heavy dark tone in lyrics. Escape to spirituality and questions about the God and fate are also present in poems like "I asked the yellow flower" by Yunus.

By the creek in summertime
In the morning of my life
Sat I beside a moaning wheel
And watched the water rise
Turns I to the water wheel and asks
Why do you cry?
To my surprise a moan rose up
And shared with me a sigh
I am troubled cried the wheel
I am troubled so I moan
Once a giant tree was I
With arms stretched to the sky
The wind kissed at my fingertips
And sang the song of life
A thousand years I grew and grew
And sang with all my might
I wished to bask forever
In the sun’s eternal light
Then the children of my mother came
And taught me about pain
They tore me from my mountainside
And cut me into planks
I am troubled, cried the wheel
I am troubled and I moan
They deemed me as a water wheel
And here I am to stay
And here I turn around and round
Every night and day
I lift the water from below
And turn and pour it high
But the river has forgotten me
For I am not alive
I am troubled cried the wheel
I am troubled and I moan
None attains his true desires
None of us can outrun time
It matters not what one acquires
None stays in this mortal life
There is no laughter in this story
My tale is one of grief and woe
The end for all is mandatory
never more will this tree grow
I am troubled cried the wheel
And that is why I moan
I am troubled cried the wheel
We all must die alone
Damn....
Thank you for sharing

I don't have any experience with turkish culture nor language, but I did find out after a quick search that this poem has many different meanings. Here's a second one, with light differences.
I'm an aggrieved waterwheel
My water is flowing splashingly
This is the decree of Deity
For I have griefs, I groan
I'm a tree of a mountain
neither sweet nor bitter
I'm grateful to God
For I have griefs, I groan
Waterwheel Why do you groan
For I have griefs, I groan
I've fallen in love with God
That's why I groan
They found me on a mountain
They broke my arms and wings
They deemed me fit for a waterwheel
For I have griefs, I groan
Carpenters carved all of me
All my parts were assembled to me
This commandment came from God
For I have griefs, I groan
I carry my water upwards
Then I pour it downwards
No one knows what I carry
For I have griefs, I groan
Yunus, who comes doesn't laugh in this world
No one attains his desire
None abides in this mortal world
For I have griefs, I groan

The tree will never grow,
No one remains in this mortal world,
For I've troubles. I moan.

A Rich man does not have millions in riches and money , A huge mansion and an array of expensive materials , A rich man merely has everything he need but finds a way to use it in such a profound way that he is abundant and fulfilled , as they say it’s not what you have got but what you do with what you have got .
Many spend life chasing something that actually doesn’t matter , what matters is happiness ,peace and how much of your soul you leave on this earth when you are gone

Centuries old lyrics, but perfect for this era: A tree complains about being cut down and formed into a turning wheel for a watermill.
This tree didn't want to be a watermill either.

Can you feel the tree's pain?
Imagine being quarantined where this man lives. Look at all those fruit trees, and that amazing landscape. This man must be in heaven. He doesn't seem to have a wrinkle in his face, has amazing hand-eye coordination, a great voice and a good memory. Plus his camera seems to be full HD. Living peacefully with other sentient beings. I'm happy for this man and I'm glad I could spend 14 minutes there.
Can't imagine how peaceful of a life it would be...

so true, but like gold, it takes effort, time, and work to gather such gold. it is worth it.
The rare moments when you are not blasted with sh*t but find gold.
The internet is the best thing that ever happened to music. Now there is more music to explore than you would ever have time to listen to which is great in my opinion.
As a Turkish, i see that although many people in the comments does not understand the lyrics, yet they do understand the feeling. That is how art can make people feel the same emotions even when they speak different languages, living different lives, having different cultures. This is a language without any letter but a melody.
Music is the language of emotion.
We are all but one.
I liked this comment almost 2 weeks since you posted it. The tune of the instrument itself speaks the feelings and lyrics of this song before he even sings. It is a beautiful song.

This song profoundly moved me. It was around 2 AM when I opened TH-cam in search of guitar music videos. Suddenly, I stumbled upon this particular video, and it felt like a serendipitous encounter-it was as if the video found me as much as I found it. There was something about the melody that piqued my curiosity, evoking emotions of both pain and sadness, yet somehow intertwined with feelings of peace and freedom. Perhaps, the latter two were emanating from the serene and breathtaking location where the artist was situated, accompanied by stunning animals that harmonized with the melody at certain points throughout the video. The way the artist sang, coupled with his striking white hair, was simply captivating. I had to pause the video at one point, allowing a few tears to fall-it’s an experience that stirred me deeply.
Thank you sincerely for sharing your beautiful rendition of this song. 🙏✨
