  • Phoibos has re-launched the Proteus lineup, this time using a Bronze case (CuSn8), which starts off with a nice rose-gold hue, but will gradually develop a natural patina over time, adding to the charm and character.
    There are 5 models to choose from; all have Seiko automatic movements, a sapphire crystal, 300 meters water resistance and screw down crown. Don't own a bronze watch? Maybe you should!

    I just received mine today. As soon as your video went up and I finished watching it, I placed an order for the green variant. I’m glad I did, as later that day when I went back on the site, that color way was sold out. It looks so good in person and wears so well. Thanks, Marc! This was my first purchase from LI and I’ve got to say, you’ve got a life long customer now.

    Love the dark blue dial. That combo seems the most nautical. The bronze reminds me of an old dive helmet, very cool

    So I bought a Bronze Phoibos Eagle Ray from LIW a few tears ago and thought it was a great value. For $420 with 500M, sapphire crystal, a rubber Tropic style strap and 2 leather straps with matching bronze hardware, strap changing tool and a nice zippered travel case. It has patinaed to a nice warm brown with a tinge of green in certain areas. It was the first, and so far, only watch I own with a Sellita s200-1 movement, and that is the main weakness of the watch in my opinion. It has, what I came to find out later was a known issue, the spinning oscillating weight when you hand wind the watch. it was always a stiff winding mechanism, but never having owned a Sellita I assumed that was normal for the movement. However, when hand wound you can hear the weight spinning wildly inside the case. Had I been aware of the defect earlier I would have addressed it, but it is out of warranty by now I am sure.
    Regardless I still enjoy the watch, but I no longer wind it by hand. My experience with Seiko movements has been perfect so maybe that salmon dialed version.....

    I think I got the last blue one from Mark. Low #, less than 50. The watch looks much better in person. The rope textured crown. The portal date window. The lightning second hand. The shape of the case. All make sense. Nautical theme all ties in. The 120 click bezel is smooth and tight, no play. EZ to grip. Is it a keeper? Time will tell.

    Enjoy my Zelos Hammerhead 3 in bronze. The patina is awesome to experience. Mine is over 1 year old and is not changing much now. Bronze will significantly darken over time. Really looks amazing now. This looks similar and should be really nice

    Oris makes a stunningly beautiful bronze finished "vintage diver" in some amazing colors, but they're just barely dive watches (lacking a screwdown crown, they're only rated at 10ATM / 100m.) Very cool for Phoibos to offer true dive watch specs in a bronze watch for a fraction of the price.

    Definitely one of the nicer looking Phoibos watches, in my opinion of course. In particular the salmon dial. They remind me a lot of my srpc44 gold turtle……I really liked those quartz based phoibos divers you used to carry. I think model px002. In watches I appreciate a simplicity of design, and I think those gave you a nice looking, solid watch, at a great price. I’m also very pro quartz and won’t hide it anymore.

    It's interesting how the addition of tin has such an effect on oxidation. Rolex calls their rose gold "Everose" gold. Apparently rose gold is gold is an amalgam of gold and copper, and over time will darken because of the oxidation of the copper. They stopped the darkening with the addition of, you guessed it, tin.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  ปีที่แล้ว

      tin doesn't oxidize readily. It forms it's own barrier.

    Watch case looks beautiful. I wonder why they used leather strap for a diver's watch. Bracelet or rubber would have made more sense. 😄
    I just got a bronze glycine combat sub 2 weeks ago to try and experience the patina. So far still staying pristine but then again it is part of a rotation and not worn daily.
    Thanks for the review and tidbits of knowledge. 😊

      "I wonder why they used leather strap for a diver's watch" - Well, apply a product used by leather horse saddle 'Cowboys'; it's called Obenauf's. Once applied, the leather becomes impervious to liquids. - Just make sure that the leather is clean. If there's a stain or scuff, this stuff (Heavy Duty Leather Preservative) will make it a permanent resident...

    Hi Marc, I have a brass watch that is Chrome plated, some of the Chrome is wearing away and it's turning my wrist green. Will bronze do the same? Will sweat make it corrode faster? I like the look of bronze but I'm not sure on the rest. Thanks

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sweat will accelerate it for sure. The caseback is steel, and that will not patina.

    • @speedyfreak9266
      @speedyfreak9266 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience, the bronze part of the case that will still likely contact your skin will turn it green at times - especially in warmer weather when sweat is present.

    Lovely watches. I thought the same about the second hand but it works given the trident theme. Nice at tension to detail with the port hole date window. A bezel with compass points would have been the cherry on the cake
    The lovely thing about bronze watches that it ages with you, you get parts of the case that rub against your clothing that remain polished and other parts that will age gracefully. Don’t ever attempt doing the fake patina thing, it looks ugly
    Phosphorus bronze is very durable, still used in gears and gearboxes, even gear oil has Pearl phosphorus to help lubrication
    Now which one, must be the blue
    Both you and TVG needs one of these
