My daughter is a CFO of a large company and works 50-60 hours a week. Since my husband passed away a year and a half ago I find I don’t make good wholesome meals for myself. So I decided to make two meals a week for her and her family. I have done this for over a year now. Good meals for them and good nutritious meals for me! A win win for us all!

I was raised by parents who survived the Great Depression, They both volunteered for service in WW2 as well. They never threw anything out. Never had hot water until they married in the mid 50's.. Mum said it was like Christmas to turn on a tap and get hot water. They repaired everything. We always sat down rogether for dinner and talked with each other, seven of us. No TV, no phones, nothing. We had to ask to be excused from the table. Aways said grace at mealtimes.

I am 78 and had 5 children and I often say I had more time less stress when I had all these children to look after than I do now, I was brought up by my grandmother who had lived through 2 world wars (I live in the UK) and she was frugal said I had no right to buy things that I could make and "that haste makes waste" so I cooked sewed knitted did DIY decorating you name it my Gran showed me how, I cooked everything from scratch (still do) and still had time to spend one afternoon a week visiting my father-in-law and another afternoon my own mother, I had no car (I can't drive) was always pushing a small child in a pram, meal times you had to have a very good reason you were not sitting at the table for tea, were we all talked about our day and what we had done, and my children all had to help clear the table and take it in turns to wash up, and we were a very happy family and have always supported each other, and in those days times were hard, but we managed.

I have a theory about how the evil “multi-tasking” came into our lives. I am guessing that we are roughly about the same age, Emmy, (I’m 58) and so you will understand these references. Our generation still had Moms that were almost all full time homemakers; in the first seven years of my schooling, with almost forty kids in each class, only one mom (a nurse) worked. So we had that influence, but being in school for all of the 1970’s told us that “women can do/have if ALL”. We all fell into that “Supermom” trap, but luckily I have a family that has no problem with me being imperfect. Some days - even though the floors may need to be swept and washed - I would spend the day outside playing with my kids. They were always my number one, and I didn’t mind doing some housework at night after they went to bed. I love your videos - blessings to you and Paul!

I was born in the 1960's and my mom was the queen of multitasking. She was rarely home. She went to college full-time, and much of my life she worked as well. In addition, she was a pastor's wife. We were latchkey kids for sure. We did have bedtime rituals, which were awesome parenting! But the multitasking was really a joy killer. Love my parents, and if my mom hadn't become a teacher we would never have had anything financially, so I'm grateful, but it was hard when all my friends' mothers were home and made cookies, etc. They teased us at lunch and recess.

When I was growing up (MANY years ago, lol), my Mother had a rule of “the tv is off while we eat our meal”. I still think that is a great rule for families…they will talk more to one another.

When my kids were in college, it was hard to get us all to the table at the same time, but we managed it several times each week. Now my kids are in their 40s and they call me once a day for a few minutes. I think we still have the cohesiveness that we did back then.

I put our one TV in the uncomfortable basement. It did not stop TV/video watching but it made TV free zone and you had to choose to go down there. Our family ate the vast majority of our meals in the dining room and still do. I grew up without a TV until I was 14. Our mother would read books aloud it was wonderful to drift into another world slumped in a chair. We lived in the late Victorian world of Great Britain and the American South.

Not frugal but my comfort food is Chinese take out. It makes me think of a fluffy throw, warm pajamas, snuggled up on the couch, with a glass of wine, a cheesy chic flick, and eating right out of the Chinese take out container and playing hooky from life.

I have to tell you about one of my husband’s finds. When he goes to our local recycling center to drop ours off, he saw a kitchen aid mixer just like yours! It was sitting on the ground outside a dumpster. He asked one of the workers about it, and the guy said he was welcome to it! It had most of the attachments in the bowl, and even the metal bowl! We’ve always wanted one but we wouldn’t buy it. Now we have one!

We have a metals recycling trailer and are encouraged to recycle anything with a cord or contains metal.....We are not suppose to take ANYTHING from the metals recycling trailer, it is semi watched, but they do get busy. I must contain myself all too often. This spring and summer we will be fitting a set of cast iron bench ends with wood; still deciding which/what wood and whether a single seat chair, two seater, or a bench.

I remember at Grandma's house the entire extended family would gather around the table and before sitting down or helping themselves to the food, one of the older men would lead the group in prayer and grace to give thanks and ask the good Lord to bless us and the food. The vibes were very gentle and peaceful, with tons of respect for one another and especially for the elders who both provided and prepared such wonderful feasts.

I am so grateful that my Grandmother, who survived but never recovered from the Depression raised me for my most critical years. I still do things she did. I PREFER to listen to a baseball game, though today, in English, not French, because I use my mind to visualize what is going on. I sew with no radio or television, only the clicking of the sewing machine for music. I love playing with my beautiful service dog, Nike, and will spend much time watching her run and chase the toys I throw for her. I LOVE the smells of roasting vegetables, simmering soups and home-baked bread. I use a fountain pen to write personal notes to my loved ones, and I make soap and candles that perfume my house and my bathroom. You are absolutely right. Our lives have been cheapened by electronics, and how many times do I lament seeing people walking around the amazing rose gardens here with their eyes on their cell phones! I want to shake them until their heads rattle!

I'm a South Carolina girl, so I love to hear that you found collards down here and enjoy them. Most people outside the south cook them quickly, but we cook them for hours to make them really good and tender. Any smoked meat will season them--a leftover ham bone, ham hocks, even turkey necks. You did a great job, but you could have gone ahead and added the rest of the collards to the slow cooker once they cooked down just a little bit. Once you start eating them, you always wish there were more!

I have a continuous running to do list. Each evening I pick 3 things that I want to tackle , even though there are many. When I finish those 3 tasks I feel that I have accomplished what I set out to do. It’s a great feeling. Nothing stops me though from going back to my list and seeing if there’s something else that I would like to do. After trial and error I have found 3 things that I can cross off is just the right number. Yet if I can’t accomplish those three, I give myself grace because there’s always tomorrow.

Emmy, I have a funny story for you about meal time. My young grandsons come from a very hectic household. They never eat at the table. So when they were little, I made a point of always sitting at the table when they came to our house. One time they balked it this and wanted to sit in front of the TV. I said, "No, we are going to sit at the table like civilized people." Well, did that come back to haunt me!! They told their mom, my daughter-in-law, that they had to start eating like civilized people!! WOW. I'm so lucky that my DIL understood the intent of my words and didn't take it as a comment on her parenting! We have laughed about it many times.

I don't allow food in any other part of the house except the kitchen, at the table, though my son doesn't like this rule and is constantly sneaking food into his room. I figure, no one sleeps on the kitchen table, why should anyone eat in their room? It's also a no phone on the table during meals rule, too.

He knew my mom worked outside the home and asked if she would give her opinion on a new cooking device, the crock pot. My mom reported back she loved it. Years later when I left home, crockpot recipes from her were in my bag. So they did their research with real people. Cool, huh?

I needed this video. I lost my brother to cancer this week and then we started moving today. I had a doctor appointment before we took our first load to the new house and ate my lunch standing up when we got there. My husband says I don't have an off button. He generally has to make me stop when I get carried away. My mother was the same way. She used to make our beds when we were still in them sleeping. She would make one side, roll us over and then make the other side. With 7 children I guess she had to get done what she could, when she could.
My all time comfort food is grilled cheese and tomato soup.
Enjoyed listening to Paul play his guitar and giving his review on the greens. My husband loves greens so that is a recipe I'll be sure and try.

My favorite comfort food in the winter (It changes with the seasons) would be slow cooked rice pudding with nutmeg on top. I only make it when I have something to put it in the oven with that I'm slow roasting , like a pork shoulder. It's SOO delicious and simple to make. Here's the recipe in case you'd like to try it. Be patient, it looks like milk soup and you won't think it will come together, but in the end you'll have a delightful treat which resembles a warm hug.
    Baked Rice Pudding
    1 quart of whole milk
    1/4 sugar (or to taste)
    a good pinch of salt
1/4 cup of white rice (I feel long grain works best)
Freshly ground nutmeg to taste (I love nutmeg, so I put about 1/2 tsp in the mixture and grate a little sprinkle on top too)
    1/2 tsp vanilla extract.
Stir together all ingredients and pour into a buttered casserole dish. Bake at 300 for 3 hours, stirring about 3 times during the first hour to keep the rice from settling. The slow oven helps to evaporate some of the milk so it becomes more like cream. Serve warm or cold.

I smiled thinking about the limited schedule on television. We’d get up super early on Saturday mornings and stare at the test pattern until the National Anthem played, then a devotional sponsored by the local cemetery just waiting for the cartoons to come on. Thank you Emmy. You are so right, you never know how precious our time is, especially with others, until you loose someone dear to you. When I lost my son in 2019, it really brought to light how often I was in a hurry, or he was in a hurry. There's nothing like a death to bring to light how precious that time was. Truthfully...
When someone takes the time to cook a meal, then people just rush in gobble it up and leave... It's a terrible thing to do to that person who just took hour's...
Shopping.... Preparing the ingredients and then cooking it!
It's such an empty feeling for some who are then left to clean up and do the dishes... 😏
It's not that folks do this intentionally..
And that person rarely ever says anything about it... They just eat the feeling that they are left with.
Not a criticism, merely a reminder. Taking time to spend with other's is honestly the best gift ever ❣️
I absolutely love the timer idea!

    • @FrugalMoneySaver

Yes exactly... I hope I didn't come off judgemental, I meant to just make aware because you are right, family isn't setting out to harm hurt feelings...
It is just a reminder that sometimes unintentionally it does. And the person it hurts may not even realize it..
But these things can manifest later on! That's how people start to feel unappreciated and then they react in a negative manner... It snowball's 😏
      I really liked this video!
      Blessings 💞

Got my handbags there and such wonderful knick knacks. I even found a cookie jar like the one my Grandma had when I was little. Old time is best time in my thrifted book! Heads up for your trip to the Little house in March. Please visit if possible Hoskins restaurant (about 10-15 minutes from your little house) on the main street of Ocean Drive at lunchtime on Friday.
They have fresh flounder, collard greens, two other vegetables, bread and tea for $8.99 plus tax and tip. The servings are so big I end up having supper with leftovers! If for some reason you can’t make it to Hoskins, you may want to try the SHACK at Cherry Grove. I grew up where greens were a big part of our diet, and still one of my favorite. We grew and cooked a lot of mustard greens. When the garden started coming in, I always looked forward to something called kilt lettuce or wilted lettuce. For as long as I can remember, on Christmas Eve, we had two competing family tradition foods that are now my absolute favorites: the first was my french father's champagne punch which we were not allowed to have as kids (except a sip with the meal). He taught me how to make it and I have made it every Christmas Eve I have been an adult. It is delicious, but it does make it hard to find the floor if you are not careful, lol. My slovak grandmother, on the other hand, insisted that we all must have at least a spoonful of sauerkraut soup -- which is the Slovak equivalent of chinese sweet and sour soup. It has plums, mushrooms, saerkraut, and spoon dumplings, and as kids we thought it was pure poison. Now I serve this every Christmas eve, too, because knowing where we come from is so important.

My favorite comfort foods are ones I grew up eating as a Ukrainian: Cabbage rolls, Russian potato salad, siberian dumplings with ketchup (they tend to have several kinds of ground meat mixed together in them, which I think makes them the best,) mashed potatoes with a side of: pickles, pickled mushrooms, herring, or chicken aspic, and of course borshch. (Idk why Americans spell it with a T at the end, that’s not how we spell it.) For dessert my favorites from my culture include rice pudding, semolina pudding (especially if you add Nutella to it!) strawberries with sour cream and sugar, sweet cheese pancakes (made from farmers cheese,) plum hand pies, and chocolate rum cake that my mom has
made for me for my birthday every year that I’ve asked for it. She always makes such amazing cakes with so many fun layers. Some layers she might add poppyseeds to, or chopped nuts, and usually a layer of meringue she bakes on low heat overnight! Always makes the cream by mixing butter and condensed milk, coats the tops of the cakes with melted chocolate, and decorates with cream roses or berries. Beautiful and delicious! I want to have cake making skills like her some day. :) Of course I have favorite comfort foods that are American (like roast beef! My husband is American,) or from other cultures (like sushi!) but this comment is already so long! Haha 😅I also add sour cream to most of the soups I make. :) I think it adds a wonderful flavor.

I agree with you 100 % on the devices, it's ridiculous what is happening. We have to be so very careful to be all there for our families and others...and even God.
I love collards, I cook mine with olive oil and garlic powder. Yummy. Sometimes if I find one of those bags on clearance I'll throw the entire bag in the freezer, and I love buying all kinds of greens in the freezer department at the store, just plain greens, no sauces or any of that. I also add them to soups too to make a huge nutritional boost and it tastes so good too!
My grandparents and parents were Depression also, I so think of my grandma and what she would think of the waste now.
My favorite comfort food is a good homemade veggie soup with tomato base and lots of basil in it. I put brown rice or a brown rice or nutritious pasta on the side to go in the soup. Soooooo comforting.
    Great video!
P.S. We enjoyed Paul playing his guitar and seeing his guitar collection too. Dixie Belle is being so good on the couch, so cute.

Staying on my cell phone isn't a problem for me, in fact I dislike using it. When we had the old-fashioned phone with a receiver, I enjoyed talking to people on the phone but ever since the cell phone took it's place, I rarely talk to anyone on the phone.

This morning my sweet husband installed a replacement set of miniblinds in the room we use for an office. I was in another room busily dismantling the old set to use the slats as garden markers, when suddenly I had an "Emmy and Paul" moment! I realized I had scored not only 34 nice slats, which my husband will cut into 68 sturdy garden markers, but I also had three three-strand trelllises, a sturdy short stake, and some lengths of twine. Hardly anything was left unusable from the old set of blinds! Are you just so proud of me? Thank you for your inspiring videos that help us look closely at everything discarded to see the potential that is still there.

When I was growing up we ate together as a family every evening. Like your family, Emmy, we ate early, at 5:30 because that's when my father got home from work and I guess he was hungry! When I got out on my own I always liked a little time to relax after work before my husband and I ate. And for many years we didn't always sit down to eat together.
Today we sit down and eat dinner every evening at the same time, 6:30. I cook for my husband and myself and our housemate. We all eat together and it's nice.
Yes! I've learned to make lists or I just don't seem to make progress. I've been doing much better lately.
We live in a small place so there is more clutter than I'd like and I've been working on that. (I have a friend who when walking into our place has said that it's always so clean. Cluttered, but clean. 😏) But I insist that the kitchen be clutter free in order for me to cook. I will not tolerate dirty dishes in the sink or clutter on the counters. When we go to bed at night the kitchen is clean and clutter free for breakfast in the morning.
My favorite comfort food is roast chicken with mashed potatoes and fresh streamed broccoli.
Another good vlog thank you, guys!

Slowing down in all areas is so important and sharing our time with people (face to face if possible) without interruptions is precious.
We get a lot of greeting cards of all kinds in with junk donation request mail. Even though we've asked them to stop, they don't and so I have 2 card boxes with dividers and put those I like in them along with cards we've bought in bulk packages. Who doesn't enjoy getting a thinking of you or just to say hello card as a surprise here and there, so I love sending them at random.
I love your happy planner and the colorful discs. I've used different planners but now am making junk journals (many TH-cam videos) to add groups of pages (signatures) for what I need to keep track of. They have different themes and decorations if I want and can be cheaply made with "junk" mail/papers/pictures & items from around the house. Recently did a sewing one with my grandmother's old buttons, needles, small crochet items and hooks, pictures of her and our great grandmothers' quilts we have, old patterns from making our sons' pajamas & robes when they were little, etc. Fun to look through and a place to keep some little things found when decluttering. I agree that decluttering is a huge stress reliever!
Those collard greens look delicious and being so healthy is a bonus. (Except the bacon, but oh well. lol)
I like so many comfort foods, but meatloaf and mashed potatoes is right at the top. I love potatoes in a variety of ways and could eat them all day long. (can't, but could)
All of your tips are so timely as we get more and more stressed with news and the busyness of life these days. Paul's guitar playing was nice and it would be nice to hear him play every so often.
Thank you and God bless you both! 🙏💕

The collards look so yummy! We are trying to have slower meals and have never had phones at the supper table or during family movie time. It sure is easy sometimes to let electronics invade. My all time favorite comfort food is hamburger gravy, mashed potatoes and corn. My husband would beg to differ but we do have it from time to time. Lol

I remember how my Grandma did our dinner times. We all gathered at the dining table in our places. We said Grace and started passing the plates or bowls. We talked about our days and ate slowly. It was wonderful.

I noticed at the end there your comment of not caring for tomato soup. I’m the same, I’ve never liked the taste of tomato soup from a can which is what my mom always served. A few years back, I decided to try making a homemade tomato soup and was amazed to discover that it was quite delicious! I’ll never go back to using store bought!

Loved this video! Great reminders to everyone of us. Our homes are our getaway from this crazy world. Live each day as if it’s your last day is how I live. I am an Etsy and Poshmark seller and a handwritten card is always included in the order. Folks love the fact that someone took the time to hand write a note. Also when I was a boss at a job outside the home- I always made time for 15 minutes before I left to either email or leave a handwritten note on their desk of 3 employees each day just to sat hey thanks for the great job that you did this week. Everything is so negative nowadays- it saddens me that so many folks seem unhappy. Once again thanks for your videos.
