I worked on this film and this is the ending I remember being edited together first. Next thing I know the film is being released with a much different ending. So to all those folks who thought I was crazy when I said there was an "alternate ending" to this movie, here it is! Thanks Tiberius!
I have to say, I like the theatrical ending much better! This original ending was nice -- especially to see Walt married with two boys of his own. But the theatrical ending, with the son of the Sheik, meeting the "son" of the two legendary brothers -- and finding they were both raised with the same stories -- really wrapped up this movie nicely. "They really lived!" Great ending.
It was sold as a comedy, but I have never seen such a long and broad, generation spanning love story in my life. My wife and I were silenced by the depth of love, passion and intensity of love that spread itself over multiple continents, years and, a sensitive vibrant and realistic presentation, to anyone with an eye to see and an ear to hear expressed as a love story for the ages.
@@chrisfleischman3371 Anyone with a working mind and functioning kind heart can see it is a generational love story, presented with sensitivity and humor, no wonder Hollywood missed the point. No sex, no out of context violence, and a story of how one generation teaches the next. It would be as difficult to reproduce as a musical like the early days.
This became one of my Dad’s favorite films at the end of his life. When family and friends would come to spend time with him he would make them sit and watch it with him. In three weeks it will be 20yrs since he passed. Thank you for sharing this. I feel him with me and know he would have loved it.
It was the last movie I watched with my dad, he laughed and loved it, it’ll always be my favorite film, for its message and as an ode to real men and adventure and love.

INMOP this is one of the best movies ever. Michael Caine's Texas accent is incredible. All of the cast brought life to their characters! Osment's natural voice cracking as he was 'going through the change' was absolutely perfect. I think they should've combined parts of both endings. I like the heartfelt ending but enjoyed the descendants of the sheik confirming it was actually real
This movie depicts so many of my own experiences growing up from leaving the pointless suburbia to running away to go live with my father on his cattle ranch. I had a lot of “uncle” types that inadvertently taught me how to be a man, for better and for worse. I’ve been writing a collection of short vignettes on the topic; many are comical, but a few are dead serious. All of these “uncles” were responsible for who I have become. Great stuff.
I wish they would have played both endings, I have never seen this one before. thank you for showing it, I wonder where you found it. I am just glad you did.
Never seen this one either. Glad they shot the other one. This one just doesn't hit the same way. They tried to put to much into it I think. The Legion guys coming out the the trailer was a bit much. Like we are to believe they traveled that way. come on.
I watched the entire movie uninterrupted for the first time this week and found it to be the kind of timeless classic that lingers in our memory. This especially applies to the humour and wisdom delivered to the audience.
I have to admit I like the original ending more, but it was great seeing this version. Secondhand Lions - Big Fish - Field of Dreams. My dad's been gone for many, many years, but these three films still make me cry.
So happy to see this! Hub reminded me of my favorite uncle James! He was on the Burma road in WWII , and I don’t suppose he was the man Hub was, but he had a lot of good values. His stories I’d heard many times when Dad and he were talking and laughing! Just a great movie that I dearly love!!!
Thank you for posting this video. I love this movie. I like this ending so much more. Having the Sheik and the French Foreign Legion travel all that way to honor them shows so much more respect, as well as proving the stories were true.
haven't watched this movie in years, just lots of clips on YT. Still brings tears to my eyes. Absolutely loved it. Time to watch it all the way through again. Thanks for posting this. Can't say I ever saw this ending.
I've never seen this one before, but I prefer when the helicopter flies in rather than the limo pulling up. I wish they'd kept the funeral scene, eliminated the limo and THEN had the helicopter fly in, perhaps with the old man as well
Secondhand Lions is one of my favorite movies and I've watched it quite a few times. I'm 74, a Marine Vietnam veteran and my eyes well up with tears each time I watch it. This movie is pure magic.
'And we shall all know how to perish, Following tradition.' -- 'Le Boudin', the marching anthem of the Legion Etrangere' I think this ending is wonderful. Way back when rocks were soft, I served with a guy in a crappy country down South. When we got out, he had trouble readjusting so one day he sold everything, caught a flight to Paris, partied a couple weeks, sobered up, and joined the Legion. At my last hearing, sometime right before the Millennium, he was a platoon sergeant in the 1er REC. I hope my old war mutt ass passes away as cantankerous and loved Hub and Garth. It's a death worth trying for.
Nowadays many guys (at least in the US Army) are joining up with the Ukrainian Legion instead. I’ll admit me being stateside in a peacetime army I’m kinda envious

I get up early every July 14 just to watch the parade live from Paris, and to see the Legion march to Le Boudin. Because they march at a slower pace they are always the last foot unit. They alone bring their own band and unlike many French Units, they do not split before the reviewing stand where the President of the Republic is standing.
This is the first time I've ever seen the original ending. I wish they kept the foreign legionnaires' salute in the theatrical ending as it would have been a nice tribute for their years of service. I'm fine with the grandson and great grandson arriving by helicopter to affirm the sheik's side.
I liked this ending. One Saturday years ago this came on in the afternoon and I was hooked watching it. Great movie and still watch it when ever its on.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Me and my grandma watched it when it first came out, and it still brings back so many good memories. It was such a a well developed story, and had a great message behind it. I will say I kinda prefer the theatrical ending, but I do wish they had included the teenage punks all grown up and respectable in that version. It would have tied up the whole thing nicely to have seen them. Cool to see an alternate ending to a movie that's very near and dear to my heart, for sure, though.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. My dad was a troubled person, and we had a difficult relationship my entire life until he passed. I gave him this movie when he was unwell, and he did watch it in spite of his skepticism. He told me it was one of the best movies he’d ever seen and thank me for it.
I introduced this movie to my Father after watching it. As I told him about it he said he never seen or heard of it so I brought it for him. At the time it came out it was a VHS tape and I still have mine! Loved it!
I haven't thought of this movie for years, and here I am, watching the end and sobbing as if I'd just watched it all over again. It was an amazing movie. I did like the theatrical ending, though.. with the helicopter. There was a bond there. Two boys, growing up with the same stories, just never believing it was anything but stories. But this.. this was a proper send off to the men. Both for Walt, but in two different ways.
When I worked at blockbuster and someone wanted a recommendation for a good family movie I always suggested this one. Every single person came back and said it was amazing. I have watched my dvd many times and never knew of this ending until today.

“In combat, you will act without passion and without hatred, you will respect the vanquished enemies, you will never abandon your dead, your wounded or your arms.”
This ending is nice, but I like the other one better as well. You have 2 guys who grew up in different parts of the world hearing essentially the same story from very different people, and they've most likely wondered if the stories were indeed true. Then they both meet and it confirms that they weren't just being entertained.
@@raymondcarver476 Exactly. Felt a little better acted as well. But again, loved seeing the boys Herb beat up, show up. I was always thinking one of them should've been the Sheriff

Disagree Too long-winded In the theatrical version it does not just confirm the stories to be true but it shows the brothers to be legends even in the eyes of their enemies.
It would have been perfect if the grandson had helped the Sheek get into position. Then, he walked up and told the story of how his grandfather had spoken highly of these two brave men. ❤

Good to see this alternate ending. But I like the helicopter ending better. TY for sharing this.
It is not difficult to classify this masterpiece as a classic
They should have left this in the movie
Haven't seen this movie in tears, but was addicted to watching it when it was released. 😊❤
Bought the DVD of this heartwarming movie as soon as it came out. We watch it at least every year, sometimes more. It’s absolutely delightful.💞
When I worked at blockbuster and someone wanted a recommendation for a good family movie I always suggested this one. Every single person came back and said it was amazing. I have watched my dvd many times and never knew of this ending until today.
I joined the AF in 1958.
Met a friend in basic training, went to missile electronics school with, attended each other's wedding, and we helped raise each others' kids.......stationed with or near each other for 20 years.
Went through unbelieveable shi.....stuff together, though not like in this flik.
He retired in '78.....I in '81
Been living deeeeeep in the Missouri Ozarks just a few miles from each other since '99.
.......call him "Jim"
Didn't see this movie until my daughter (with 4 kids of her own) called me and said:
" DADDY, they made a movie about you and Jim ............ you GOTTA see it."
What a compliment from my baby girl.
..........this ending -- the one I saw, originally -- always brings me to tears.........
One of my all time favorite movies. I watch it regularly and always feel good.
One of the greatest movies of modern times. Two of the most important actors of our times. Watch "Big Fish" to see another inspiring movie.
“In combat, you will act without passion and without hatred, you will respect the vanquished enemies, you will never abandon your dead, your wounded or your arms.”
Now I know what i willbe watching for Sunday afternoon movie
Glad to see this version. Much happier they used the other... but still glad to see this version.
The last few years, I watch this movie dozens of times!! I enjoyed the original ending BUT…I LOVE THIS ONE!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
It was all true...Hub McCann - that's who I am.
"You just got out of the
hospital "
"There's only 4 of them."😂😂
I LOVED that movie
one of the best movies no matter which ending you like!!!
Loved seeing the boys show up, but I prefer the theatrical ending.
I can watch this movie over and over! Actors were great at making me believe the characters were real people! Love, love it! I like both endings
I loved this ending but I also loved the validation of the “stories” from the original ending. One of my favorite movies ever and as many times as I’ve watched it, still need Kleenex !
Absolutely loved this movie!
This movie and "Big Fish" are two of my favorite movies. The younger, coming to understand the elder.
This was one of my fathers favorite movies when I was younger always makes me think of him
That was a perfect ending they should have kept it.
I agree, fits the story much better.
Disagree
Too long-winded
In the theatrical version it does not just confirm the stories to be true but it shows the brothers to be legends even in the eyes of their enemies.
Wow I've never seen this ending either I love it but then I love this movie❤
It would have been perfect if the grandson had helped the Sheek get into position. Then, he walked up and told the story of how his grandfather had spoken highly of these two brave men. ❤
Ok i am liking this one. I love this movie.
