This video just gave me the mad 2007 vibes. That little camera setup is very similar to the jenky setup I used to shoot on. My fisheye was the worst. The camera had no threads so I had to use a clip on and wrap gaff tape around to make sure it didn’t randomly pop off. I love the aesthetic that mini dv tape gives. I’m almost missing it that much that I might have to go rip my FireWire capture card out of my old old pc and get shooting on it again

Honestly any Digital8 DCR camera looks like the VX style as they are from the same time. And the Digital8 was the high end cameras. I had the DCR-TRV360
I believe Dcr dvd series from sony are a way better alternative, specially the 201e, instead of tapes it uses 8cm dvds, no glitch problems, way easier to format and way faster to import the files to a computer
Well these drives would require these mini DVD-Rs and those are hard to find today too. Especially for a good price. And the Bitrate of these are also a lot lower than the DV footage of a DV tape camcorder. Editing DV files is also a lot easier than MPEG II files. I'd say only use these mini-DVD camcorders if you A) already have lots of blank 8cm DVD-Rs and B) really have absolutely no other choice.
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 you can use sony memory stick instead I believe. I've been collecting a few old handycams but not got the dvd ones yet and not sure if I will at all because optical zoom isn't very good. But then vx1000 only has 10x too. I guess useful for skate stuff but for landscape or car spotting and stuff it's better to have more. I guess you may be able to screw on a 2x tele lens tho
Its a perfect camera to watch your cassettes too because if you use the vx1000/2000 playback feature it can damage the camera by clogging the camera heads or something like that(a fix tho is you can have the heads cleaned)
I dunno, if you really just want a Playback device, i'd go for a lower-end camcorder where the picture and sound quality would be terrible. it doesn't even have to be the same manufacturer. You could use a JVC miniDV camera too, slap in your tapes recorded with your Sony MiniDV and just play-out the tape to the computer. As long as you didn't record in LongPlay mode, it would always work. Longplay is a a HUGE problem because there was never a real definitive standard for Longplaymode on DV format. So ever manufacturer did their own thing. If you recorded a tape in Longplay mode it was never really possible to play it back on a different camera. Sometimes not even on different models of the same manufacturer. So i'd say ALWAYS shoot SP. You can re-use tapes anway once you saved the recording to your computer and made some backups of the played out files. Always do plenty of backups on different formats. This is what's worth it having a BD burner. You can easily store a whole 60 Minute MiniDV tape onto a single layer BD-R.
Hyped you did a fisheye comparison too. I always wondered how a fisheye would look on those and that cheap little one actually looks really good even though it’s not as wide. Keep up the vx info vids man not many people make informational videos about these things and it’s sweet.

Personally, as someone who owns both a PC100E and a PD150p, i'd always chose the PC100E simply because it has the better image sensor imho. Sure it's no 3CCD sensor rig like in the VX1000 / VX2000 but it's a MEGAPIXEL sensor. You can even slap a Memorystick into the back and take JPEG stills with the Photo mode to see what the sensor delivers at native resolution. This is also why the scaled down Video Image looks so sharp because the actual image provided by the Sensor has a higher resolution. But thankfully you don't have a lot of nasty Aliasing from the downscaling because the resolution difference is not too extreme but it really is enough to make the picture look sharper. Yes, the battery position is a bit of a haptic-obstacle. Especially when you slap a HUGE battery onto it. But a big battery would allow you to shoot for HOURS without having to swap the battery. Personally i always loved these "brick" shaped MiniDV camcorders a lot. By the way, you’re right that the highest resolution is only available in “Memory Mode” (by rotating the dial all the way up) and only for pictures. It’s kind of odd to have such better image quality but not be able to record with it. Actually, with a tapeless setup, you can record in Memory Mode at the highest quality, but there’s a massive “dead pixel” in the top right corner. I think this is deliberate and not a lens issue, since it doesn’t appear in normal recording mode. My theory is that Sony intentionally programmed the "dead pixel" to appear if you try to record in Memory Mode. That, or it could be that the camera was never simply intended to record in Memory Mode 25 years later, so it’s just a genuine dead pixel that this model has that shows up because it wasn’t tested for recording in Memory Mode. I also noticed that the image in Memory Mode has a slightly wider field of view. So at minimum zoom you can see more than in regular Recording Mode at the same zoom level. It definitely feels like a dumb limitation. I tried removing the dead pixel/white dot in Premiere Pro, but with movement or certain surfaces, it’s still visible and quite distracting. I still love this camera aesthetically and have it for quick clips and collection. But a more serious camera will give much better results if you are looking for the vintage aesthetic.
@@tatsukimasu Well dead pixels are sadly the bane of our existence and something that always happens with image sensors. It even happens today but you don't see it that much anymore because camera software today uses Pixelmapping to ignore the dead pixels and making them not show up. And that was something that wasn't part of the camera's firmware back then. Keep in mind this was still 1998/99. Sony back then did a a few models that came with higher resolution MegaPixel image sensors instead of the commonly used 800px image sensors. I did a direct comparison to a later professional Sony DV cam like the PD-150p and its CCDs (it uses 3, split by a prism so each chip gets one spectral color) and its image is not as sharp as the image produced by the Megapixel image sensor of the PC100. And yes, i too still love the image produced by this mini DV oldtimer and i WISH modern camcorders were built like this again with a vertical brick shape and buttons for EVERY feature. Luckily I received a Sony wide angle add on lens with Handy Cam from the Bay.. Fits nearly all my little cams.. Also you often get the little filter kit included too..

Yo man cool video. If your deck is glitching I can't reccomend enough a tape cleaner. Sony makes em still I think and you can buy one on ebay for dead cheap. Just run it in the camera for 10 seconds and your heads are clean. Give it a shot
I got one given with the vx I bought I run it in my camera and even fast forward or back and it works for a little bit and then the problem comes back in the end, it’s quiet tempermenral it works sometimes really good sometimes bit glitchy
Do you reuse the same tape after syncing the clips to a computer or do you need to get new tapes everytime ?? prob a stupid question but i’m new to the old school cameras.
You can reuse tapes but sometimes they glitch . You have to re-record a whole hour with the lens cap on from the start so the whole footage on the tape is black then rewind and start again filming it shoudk work fine as I’ve done this so many times , more than 4 times to 1 tape before
hey g yeh tbh w u like i had the canon xm1 for time but realistically i think ppl should just save up to get one cos nothing beats a vx1 except the sony dcr trv900 it looks the same as vx baker 2 was filmed with it, also where bouts in uk u from, and now there are no more sony minidv tapes in uk phaha so tdk it is :(

i hope you will get a chance to respond to this, but does it have any threaded holes for a handle or tripod to to mount? if so is it on the bottom or the side?
@@thedlc7784 yup I have two of these cameras different models and both have the screw fitting for the bottom , ! With this grip it’ll be like holding a vx
Canon gl2 is great it was a prosumer camera so it had that large top grip handle. I have a 2001 imac that does native FireWire. Why your battery is fucked is bc it’s a decade old and destroyed by time
do you know how the opteka compares to the mk1 and the mk2? I've got the mk2 and its not very wide at all, looking for something better but cant find any mk1s
My battery was worn out , didn’t keep charge for long that’s a problem With the camera I bought . And you can buy a few tapes and re record over them that’s what I do. But re record over it with the lens cap on so the footage is all black.then start recording your footage again
I think Finalcut has a DV-import feature. Though it's pretty costly as a program. There's also another tool for around 100 bucks called "LifeFlix DV Importer & Editor". Dunno if there's a cheaper or free method since i do not use Mac OS but Linux.
Awesome channel man, just found you today. I'm rocking a Sony Handcam which takes the mini dvds. Still trying to work out how to get the data to my computer properly but love the old distorted look of it in the square format
Rocking a vixia hf r700 w/ a fake opteka 0.3x from aliexpress (45USD) and its working awesome. Didnt wanna buy the real lens cause itll proabably get hit by a board sooner or later
Nah. Don’t buy a cheap POS camera. If you want a REAL alternative to the Vx1000,2000, or 2100 and or the PD models for cheap you want the old Sony PD100a or TRV900 (same camera, different extra features) they are also 3CCD, which you didn’t even bother to mention… that is literally WHAT gave those cameras their unique broadcast / skate video “look”. The TRV900 and PD100a offer the exact same look as the VX models. Granted you will never really match anything to the Vx1000 look - but these are very close!) That camera had a look totally unique to that line, it was the first three chip, prosumer broadcast camera and the color science was more like 16mm film than broadcast. The vx2000 changed that with more cool, typical Sony broadcast colors we know today. The closest you can get to that camera is it’s predecessor the old VX700. But it isn’t a 3chip camera….so it’s not worth it. If you’re going to buy a SD camera, at least pay for the red, green and blue dedicated sensors. That’s what made those cameras look so good. I can’t believe you paid 150 for that 2000…..FU dude. Haha. I paid 3200 for mine when it was brand new. And it was such a dope camera. Back then that was like top of the line and image wise was insanely powerful. Canon had its version which was the XL1 and the smaller GL1. The XL1 had interchangeable lenses, but back then had exclusive lenses with a strange mount (I wanna say it was called the XL mount?) so I dumped that 5k camera and just got the vx2000. And image wise, it beat its ass. But really they were all great cameras. But if you want a smaller 3CCD, yeah the PD100a and TRV900 are also the shit. Just a VX in a compact body. They were $1000+ cameras in their day. Plus it takes the same batteries as the VX, and has the same functions (minus the internal ND and a few other things) and held up pretty good in low light as well. But not as well as the VX2000, or 2100. Those two were low light beasts.
Hey man, prob gonna buy a pc9e and some offbrand fisheye, do you have any more footage of your setup? Would love to see more of it in action and decide if I want a better resolution minidv or not! Thanks in advance
Hey bro , tbh it’s the fish eye that makes the difference, I like this camera but I wish I had the footage more distorted some like like a 1995 version almost haha, I do I have chillin #3 entirely made on the camera
I'm looking on ebay for this camera and they all seem to be sitting around the £150 price range... Do you think sellers are bumping the price to capitalise on the hype? If so is it still worth it or is there something else i should go for at that price? Any advice appreciated, cheers
Posted a comment and it auto deleted but just try search the start of the model number or look up the list of the instruction manuals on sony site and you may be able to find a gem
Yo! Was it just good luck that the fish eye fits the handycam or do they always? What kinda fish eye do you recommend for a handycam. Also good content ! Cheers
Using FireWire, you get a FireWire adapter like I explained in the video and then a 800 to 400 pin adapter and a FireWire cable and you plug it all in and it’ll pop up to export the footage

Luckily I received a Sony wide angle add on lens with Handy Cam from the Bay.. Fits nearly all my little cams.. Also you often get the little filter kit included too..
That’s very nice I just found the fish eye from this video again and it’s a bit shit compared to my vx but it’s fun cause the camera is small to take places
@@charvao Ha ha.. What are we doing up so late? :) Thanks for reply.. I can't keep away from searching DSR on eBay ! Just watching a guy using Analogue to SD card converter with his Camcorder similar to yours.. I bet my old 570WS is a bit big for Skateboarding !
@@charvao You might find future listings where that lens is included.. I don't know how good they are.. Good luck with eBay in the future..
@@sergeantcrow watching SLS 2019 London hahah , yeah I just recently bought a device that records straight to microSd card from my VX it’s a drone DVR. So no more tapes
@@charvao Thanks ! I didn't know about those.. and I am lucky my ridiculously heavy DSR 570ws deck works perfect but the ability to convert AV to SD is worth a try.. All the best..

U legend ❤️
I just bought a Sony dcr-hc26! Do you think I can use the same cable as you for transfer? What transfer cable is that?
i just got my hands on a sony dcr dvd350 what firewire do i need for that camera to connect to my macbook?
I now want it... Its just soo cool-looking. Also looks like horror MC's camera lol
Are there any standard def cameras that would achieve a similar look but not require a tape?
Hmm I am not sure you’d have to try on out yourself . The Panasonic hmc 150 I think it’s called and the hpx170 and hvx
yeah but my camera for some reason says i would have to reinsert the tape
where is the firewire input on the sony pc 100?
front of the camera i think
love this channel!!
Thank you so much 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Whare abouts did you buy the lens from?
You have to re-record a whole hour with the lens cap on from the start so the whole footage on the tape is black then rewind and start again filming it shoudk work fine as I’ve done this so many times , more than 4 times to 1 tape before
Do fisheye lenses fit onto every camera, if so how would I find a lens to fit a certain camera
Thanks for sharing!
No worries check out my other vids /)
hey g yeh tbh w u like i had the canon xm1 for time but realistically i think ppl should just save up to get one cos nothing beats a vx1 except the sony dcr trv900 it looks the same as vx baker 2 was filmed with it, also where bouts in uk u from, and now there are no more sony minidv tapes in uk phaha so tdk it is :(
Yooo , I’ve never looked at the cannon xm1 but I know what the cam looks like is it any good? Tbh I am gonna save for a VX1k as soon as I get a job again and nothing looks as good as the 1k with a century mk1 or mk2 on it absolutely beaut, yeah I have seen gooc things about the trv900 pretty rare to find in England tho I think I’ve seen more 1ks ! Go on eBay there’s bare minidv tapes I’m sure they will be around for a bit longer ;) I’m from Brighton area like 30 mins out but I’m moving back there in September, cheers for the comment 👌🏼
T-Boys lucky to have a 1k I can dream of that haha one day I’ll have one gonna keep my 2k as well, ahh I see yeah the opteka is really good for the money tbh , ahh yeah the new ledges I remember when I was living at uni bare people where skating them even with the fences up around em 😂 level is such a sick skatepark too hmu if you ever come down and we will skate I’m always there my insta is @charvao
how do you transfer videos from the tape to windows??
sick video thanks for this
no problem bro check out my others :)))
What are you using to up-res to HD?? Looks good!
Using the editing software you set the preview and the render to 1080p instead of 480p
Hey, Can i put wide angle lens on my Hadycam TRV57E?, and if i can put, what type of lens?
Yeah you should be able to , search up online what size lens it takes and then search a fish eye fir set size
@@charvao Thank you!!
Is the battery you bought an info lithium battery or is it a third party battery. Wondering bc idk if the third party batteries will work with this camera
Yeah it is from eBay
Nice. :) I like how you have both cameras XD. the pc-100 and the vx-1000 (i believe) came out around the same time in the mid-90's. Good Job! Definitely subbed.
Yes ofcourse I’m a bit of a nerd for these cameras 😂 they both came out in 1999 same year I was born in! It’s. vx2000 thank you very much I apprecaite it!!
char. Ooh yea I meant vx2000 oops XD
@@charvao vx2000 came out in 2000 no?
Dolores Berry 1999 I’m almost certain

i hope you will get a chance to respond to this, but does it have any threaded holes for a handle or tripod to to mount? if so is it on the bottom or the side?
Yes at the bottom it has a screw in mount, you can buy opteka X grip it is great ,
@@charvao thankyou! are you sure it fits?
@@thedlc7784 yup I have two of these cameras different models and both have the screw fitting for the bottom , ! With this grip it’ll be like holding a vx
Suscribed, man! Wich do you recommend between these, considering that look and the quality? PC101, PC1000 or TRV520/320?
where tf do you get a vx1000 for 150? i can barely find any under 500
Go watch my edits I made with these cameras !
can you put the link of the ones with the pc100?
hopefully you see this but im wondering if you have a cheap alternative fisheye for a vx2000
@TR EE no colour correction
Great video, super helpful! Do you know any other cameras that have the same look as the DCR-PC100E?
Sony pc101 I believe there is tons of variations of this camera they all have all really similar look. The Sony TRV is good too! :)
What’s a good cam now for 50-70
Could you make a skateboarding edit/film using the Sony DCR PC100e please? I really want to see more and if you have then could you link it, thanks :)
I do have one up it’s called chilln #3
charvao Thanks! Was it all filmed the PC100E?
@@charvao yo was it all filmed with the pc100e
@@oliverviscoli yes
Have you ever filmed a clip with the cheap version?
Yeah .. chillin #2 and 3
Where do you get those tape things
Canon gl2 is great it was a prosumer camera so it had that large top grip handle. I have a 2001 imac that does native FireWire. Why your battery is fucked is bc it’s a decade old and destroyed by time
I can’t find the fish eye anywhere is there a different lens that I could use for that camera
Yeah try any off eBay, just search ur mm size and try one normally opteka are good
charvao ok thanks but does it matter what size it is or do they all fit this camera
Miles Snodgrass you have to find the right size for that camera so it depends if you have the exact same camera
do you know how the opteka compares to the mk1 and the mk2? I've got the mk2 and its not very wide at all, looking for something better but cant find any mk1s
How would I get the clips off the camera to edit on my pc?
Hvr mrc1
Or another tape less solution like the d60
ImmersionRC or FireWire transfer
Hello ! I have a question, why did you buy another battery, you have to change it ? And do I need to buy many tapes or no ?
My battery was worn out , didn’t keep charge for long that’s a problem With the camera I bought . And you can buy a few tapes and re record over them that’s what I do. But re record over it with the lens cap on so the footage is all black.then start recording your footage again
Any idea on who's stocking the kenko fish eye?
No idea I got mine off eBay
Hi man , i would like to know if the Dcr ip7e is a good choices ?
Thanks for this video
If it’s the dcr pc7e yes it’s very good
char. Its the ip7e , with the micro mv format , would like to know if i can fix a fisheye on it.
Peace
Ras Tapas Is it Sony ?
Ras Tapas yes you can attach a fish eye it should be 37mm
Yes its Sony stuff : ) thank you so much bro 🤘🏽😎
Hey mate, what battery did you buy for this tho?
What do you use to transfer from camera to MacBook? As far as software
I think Finalcut has a DV-import feature. Though it's pretty costly as a program. There's also another tool for around 100 bucks called "LifeFlix DV Importer & Editor". Dunno if there's a cheaper or free method since i do not use Mac OS but Linux.
I like that little dcr
hey bro i have a dcr pc101e and its very similar but i dont know wat fisheye lens i need. I need some help finding some lens for this camera

Awesome channel man, just found you today. I'm rocking a Sony Handcam which takes the mini dvds. Still trying to work out how to get the data to my computer properly but love the old distorted look of it in the square format
Thanks so much man , oh I see yeah I love it too 👌🏼
Rocking a vixia hf r700 w/ a fake opteka 0.3x from aliexpress (45USD) and its working awesome. Didnt wanna buy the real lens cause itll proabably get hit by a board sooner or later
That’s sick that’s the best way to do it
Yo can you find a camera that films like a vx1000 but on a SD card
Panasonic HPX
The closest you can get to that camera is it’s predecessor
the old VX700.
Yeah the Trv900's great, but they don't have to know that, this video has like 100k views, think about the prices man.
I think there's other TRV handycams also which came with 3ccd but I forgot the model numbers. Only have 10x optical zoom tho yeah
@@dovid729 haha are you trying to keep the prices affordable 😅 I get it. I've been buying a few of the 8mm ones before they become hard to find
