I had some difficulties pulling the unit out. Then I took a plastic auto trim removal tool and placed it between the hard plastic underneath the clock and the (softer) dashboard. It then popped off very easy. Very helpfull video. Thanks again.
I have gone nuts missing my clock light especially in the winter. The dealership wanted $120 to replace the whole thing. Now I can fix it for under $10. THANK YOU!!!!!
This was excellent. I was looking for videos on how to replace a side marker bulb for our 2003 subaru forester and found this. Figured I'd check it out since the clock bulb has been out FOREVER. Halfway through the video I went out to the car and popped out the box with the clock, got it in the house and removed the bulb. Easy Peasy! Now I need to go to the store to buy a new bulb lol. Thanks so much for making this easy for me! :)
Did you find a video for the side marker light? If you did, could you point me to it? Just got a used 2003 Forester and going around the care looking for burned out bulbs .... the clock is one, the left side marker is another. The fogs as well, and those look like a major PITA to replace if you don't have a lift (I don't).
Thanks for the video! That dark clock has been annoying me for months, now it's all fixed thanks to your vid and a $4 twin pack of bulbs from my local auto parts store. For others from Australia like me, I couldn't find the Sylvania bulbs from the video, but the Narva ones from Autobarn worked just fine! Cheers!
I was able to change the clock bulb in my sons car in about 5 minutes after watching your video. He'd been driving w/o a working clock light for 2 years. Thanks for posting!!!
Great instructions. I'm mechanically disinclined enough that I have trouble changing a regular lightbulb :-) but was able to follow your video and made this happen. One hint for future viewers - pull the front of the tray up in the front, enough to slip your fingers under it, then slide them to the outside to pull the front clips out. Thanks for posting this!
I don't know what is crazier: a) that I thought there might be a video on TH-cam to help me do this, or b) that there is actually was such a video! Thanks for posting it :-)
God this was awesome. We bought our 04 new and the bulb has probably been out for 3 years. The dealer had told us it would be a couple hundred for a new clock. I was looking for clock options online when I saw this in the search. This couldn't have been easier and it cost a little over $3. Thank you for posting. FYI - I used a latex glove for extra grip as I also had a problem pulling the old bulb out.
For anyone in the UK, it's bulb number 284 in Halfords. Thanks for the video, I didn't think it would be this easy, so kept putting it off! now I can see the time again! 😁
Thanks so much ! Guy at AutoZone told me I needed to go to Subaru for a replacement. I ignored his advice and got the Sylvania 2723's and I'm back in business. I should have made a video as my door hinge had busted and I drilled those screws out and added new bolts to fix that problem.
I just changed the Radio Bulb. You were SPOT ON. 5 minutes and I was done. I do have 1 suggestion. I had a little trouble pulling up the Clock compartment . Your last tip on the Video mentioned pushing down on the front of the unit in order to snap it back into place.I used a Putty Knife to "PRY UP THE 2 FRONT TABS" just under the Front lip of the Unit. With hardly any effort, the compartment lifted out and I was on My way. TY. JOHN J'
Thanks mate! Worked a charm. For the aussies watching the bulb you need is a 286 t5 wedge bulb. Does the clock light stay on always? I thought it would be in headlight switch but mine is always on
Again ditto the other posts. Super big help, wish I could find one of yours for all the little hair-puller Forester issues without such nicely made video tutes. Had quite a chuckle @ 04:35 ... and then there's the cat:)
Thanks for taking the time to show how to do this! I got mine out, just need to find a bulb now, local Pep Boys didn't have it, I think I'll try Radio Shack. Non working/ unlit clocks are pet peeve for me, even though I only had the 03 forester for 2 weeks, it really bugged me. I also have two 01 foresters which had clock issues, Thanks to another DIY TH-cam poster, I was able to get them working too. Thanks again.
Thanks so much! My bulb went out last night and today I find your great video on TH-cam! Now I just need to find a video on how to fix the main cigarette lighter on my 2004 Forester.
Ever since buying my 2005 Subaru a couple years back I thought it was stupid that the clock wasn't back lit. OMG do I feel stupid. Thanks for the video!
Dude! Thanks a ton. Watched your video on my iPhone and bought and replaced right there in Advance Auto parking lot in minutes. Clock light back on! :-)
Thank you so much! I have a 2005 Forester and this worked perfectly. After I bought the car, I was thinking that it just didn't even have a clock light. I also notice now that the bottom of that storage compartment has that fibrous padding stuff to keep things from sliding around. Unfortunately with the age of the car it has started to disintegrate, so I'm gonna have to try to clean it out.
ha. I thought the same thing (clock not having a light) when I got my car used. I am in the process of replacing that inner padding and came across this video with no intention of doing the light just needing to be certain of the clock pod removal. Now I get to fix 2 things. Yes I realize this is a year old comment. :D
Nicely detailed. The bulb is a bit hard to get out of the red housing, but it does come out with some flexing. Found 2723 replacement bulbs on Amazon (2 for $5) after failing to find anything at Autozone and Napa. Subaru parts will only sell the bulb with the red housing, together for about $8 each. Not unreasonable but they don't keep them in stock so must order. Now working on bulb replacement for the center console AC controls. A bit more challenging.
I used a short bungee cord and put both hooks in the latch bar and pulled a little. Voila! Real easy. Rest went according to your plan. Thanks much! Was bugging me for over a year. For about same time, looking for reasonably easy was to patch my iPhone into the radio. FM transmitters not good. Any ideas?
Thank you for this. I don't have a problem with the clock (yet) on my 2006 but the bright yellow "pass air bag off" display (right next to the clock, in the same area) annoys the heck out of me at night, It is brighter than anything else and the mismatched orange just so hard to ignore and looks out f place and simply ugly. Wonder if I pull out the tray, if I can access the bulb for it and change it to a green one. OR i guess i can go ghetto and tape masking tape over the display from the outside.
Yes, the original bulb was very difficult to pull out, but I still did it with my bare hands. You could probably use a rubber grip (for removing canned good lids) but it WILL come out. Just be careful that it does not shatter in your hand.
So I just picked up an 04. I did a search just to see what vids were on youtube for the car. Thanks for making this vid as I might not of otherwise known the clock was even illuminated. Sure enough the bulb was burned out. Advance Auto has them in stock, but oddly there in the back behind the counter. Anyway it all worked out. By the way that bulb can be difficult to remove from the red socket. I could not do it with my fingers. I wrapped a small piece of gorilla tape around the bulb. It gave me a tab to pull from and the bulb came right out. Any duct tape should work though
Wouldn't you recommend cleaning the new bulb off after handling, or using a rag or a glove to avoid oils from your skin causing the bulb to burn out prematurely?
Did you have issues removing the original bulb from the red plastic? It looks like you are showing the removal of the new bulb which might have gone in/come out easier. This is where I'm stuck. Thanks for posting!
You "picked up Tupac" whoaaaa... But seriously, thanks for posting this. My wifes Subie clock lite just went out this summer. Now I can tell the dealer to suck it while I go to Advanced Auto Parts and do it myself THANKS A BUNCH Sir.
Thanks for the video. I'm in the process of replacing the "glove box' unit, with a 2 DIN gauge housing, to fit an Android head unit, and I couldn't work out how to remove the glove box. One tip on removing it... I found I had to pull it forward as well as upwards.. More forward than upwards really. I couldn't seem to just lift it. To loosen it, I did a repeated pull / push action, until it came free
Thank you for that video. I will be using that information when needed and now know that I can do that! Would have never thought the compartment comes out like that so I thank you a lot! I'm sure I would have either left the clock not working or paid an electrician. Wow such a simple change! That was awesome, the cat was cool too.
Great vid, nice n easy thanks... + love the cat, looks like mine, as does your car. Any ideas how to get to the bulb on teh odometer too? that doesn't light up for me either, i had assumed they were on 1 blown fuse but this answers that one :0)
For about 2/wk I was try to get this console out by pulling & cursing 🤬 then 1 day I got it 😂 But I’ve a ‘03 Forster the console fitted a ‘04 Forster clock plug was different!. Soo I just change the door (3) screws replaced lite BAM no need to rip your SUBARU apart 😊 “You can even just change the broken latch (7)screws”

Wow, went for years not being able to see the clock at night. Two pack if bulbs is up to $6 now in 2021. Easy fix. Thanks!

Congratulations on these indications. I saved time and money for service. Thanks!

Thank you. I wouldn't have done it either if it weren't for the ease of shooting and editing with a cell phone! My how far we've come.

Thank you for sharing. Well done, helpful and took the mystery out of having to pay $100.00 to replace a $5.00 part. Much obliged...

Thanks for the instructions after a long time from your video could change the lamp clock.

thank you for the clear and concise solution.
Thank you for the Video and sharing. Thumbs up.
Wouldn't you recommend cleaning the new bulb off after handling, or using a rag or a glove to avoid oils from your skin causing the bulb to burn out prematurely?
My Scooby has a clock light? Great little video all sorted now, thanks.
Did you have issues removing the original bulb from the red plastic? It looks like you are showing the removal of the new bulb which might have gone in/come out easier. This is where I'm stuck.
Thanks for posting!
Thank you very much ....Dealer wants me $91 to replace the whole clock....now I save $86.

THANKS A BUNCH Sir.
Great video! Did help me a lot. Thank you and greetings from Holland.
Could you make a video with changing the dash board lights in the same car?
Awsome!! Worked for my 2005 Fortester. Same bulb!
Thank you!
Very nice ! What’s the cats name?
Thanks for the video.

Just replaced mine on my 04 Forester X a couple hours ago :) Thank you!!
Great. I checked my Subaru manual and there was nothing on the clock light. This helped us

Any ideas how to get to the bulb on teh odometer too? that doesn't light up for me either, i had assumed they were on 1 blown fuse but this answers that one :0)
+dave furby - That may be a blown bulb too. Probably requires MUCH deeper disassembly :(
Awesome 👏

“You can even just change the broken latch (7)screws”
You should have honked at your cat on the hood
Great video. Many thanks for the assistance.
Thank u so much. Very helpful
