Good video, I would just add to turn the car off before disconnecting the components that are powered, could even disconnect the battery. Either way, informative! 👌🏻
Thank you for this video. I know the main connector is the power feed and speaker wires, but what do the wires on the smaller connector control? The back lighting on my 2004 went out so I am swapping in a factory radio from a 2007 (same generation Forester). The 2004 has 2 wires in that plug (wht/blue and blk/ylw), the 2007 has a different small plug that has 4 wires in it (blk, wht, gry, yellow).
@@mattiatorX OnStar is GM bud. Unless you get one of those aftermarket universal OnStar rear view mirrors they sold for awhile. Either way, that mirror does not integrate in the way you're saying with the in dash unit.
@@cd5sircoupe Subaru offered OnStar through a GM partnership for a number of years around the time of this car’s production. It slotted into the unused DIN slot below the single-DIN radio.

I knew this generation of Subarus were easy to do, but man this is probably one of the most simple installs I've come across yet. Even easier than my 98 Legacy was. I used to both sell car audio and I've done my fair share of installs in a bunch of 80s/90s/early 00s cars. Nothing really "modern" that requires taking half of the interior out though. Most recent one I did was an 89 Accord that was way more of a pain in the ass than it should have been. The bracket placement and how everything is set up is just stupid in that car.
Hello, I have an 04 forester w 6 CD changer. I just watched how to remove the radio. Thank you SO much for making that video! Scenario Not too long ago w the radio on, I was hearing the CD's cycling for some reason out of the blue. I just tried to use my CD player and it is not operating. I can't even get the CD's to come out. I tried pushing the power button and eject button at the same time and nothing is happening. Is there a plug that can be plugged and unplugged to try and reset it? Are there other ways to troubleshoot before replacing it? Any suggestions how to get the CD'S out? Thanks for your help. Is there a direct # I can call to speak to you on the phone? Do you know of any peeps in Denver that could help me in person?
CD changers tend to fail mechanically due to the constant moving components. No real way to get the CDs out without taking the unit apart. Most likely going to lose those discs because they'll get damaged during extraction.
I hope I'm not too late, but I just replaced the radio in my 04 Forester and here's how I did it: 1) pry out the bottom panel that surrounds the shifter, disconnect the cigarette lighter and set the panel aside. 2) remove the two phillips screws below the climate knobs. pry around the edge of the entire panel (from the climate knobs all the way up to the vents on top). when you have loosened the entire panel, disconnect the top wiring connection (hazard lights). 3) shift the car into 1st gear to move the shifter knob as far back as possible. 4) carefully rotate the entire panel forward, so that the buttons/knobs are all facing down, and the shifter knob passes through the empty space in the panel where the radio normally sits. this will give you access to the two lower connections in the climate panel. disconnect these. you should now have access to the radio as shown in this video. hope this helps you!
Hi, I have the same radio in my 2007 forester, the problem is sometimes the screen lights up sometimes it doesn’t. Actually i thought my radio was broken but all of a sudden it started to glow. Did anyone have that problem?

The small square connector is used either for the factory subwoofer or OnStar. The small round connector is used to go to an external CD changer.
