Steve Smith is my official favorite drummer of all time and this video is one reason why. But I'll still bust him on losing his stick at :50 mark, haha. The look on his face afterwards is priceless!
So very sorry for your loss, Steve! Andy was already a legend when I came onto Buddy Rich's band as lead trumpet in 1984, even though he'd already left the band a year or so earlier. I had the good. fortune of playing with him in NYC on a few big band clubdates in the 1990's, but never got to hear him play like this until, a couple of years ago when I was asked to join Cathy Rich's Buddy Rich Alumni Big Band for a few gigs here in NYC at the Cutting Room. What a tragic loss to the jazz community! Andy and Walt Weiskopf, another Buddy Rich sax section alumnus, burn here, along with you and the rest of this fine small group. To think, if Andy had continued his pro football player, we might not ever have gotten exposed to how marvelous a sax player and person he became. RIP Andy Fusco. We miss you! A fine tribute Steve!
I was shocked and saddedened to learn of the passing of Andy Fusco. He first came to my notice as lead alto with Buddy Rich. Buddy really liked Andy, he was a character and there are a couple of funny stories of Andy on the bus with Buddy as they were on the road. Rest In Peace Andy you brought good music to those with a discerning ear and thank you for being a good guy. If Buddy thought YOU were OK you were definitely that, OK !!
Steve Smith is a technical freak. I've watched numerous videos of his and he is like a machine, but a musical one. He makes everything, including this incredible tempo look relax and easy.
Andy Fusco: I have great memories of him playing his heart out with Buddy Rich. I am sorrowful for your loss Steve & band & hope he didn’t suffer too much. Terrific performance by all here, by the way, this is really burning.
This is practically perfection in a live performance, from all members. Everything crystal clear and with all the swing that it requires. With such a fast tempo it is difficult to maintain this consistency in execution. Congratulations!
Steve is an Icon in modern jazz drumming.......drumming period. I miss the days where great drummers would get together and trade licks............Steve and Dave Weckl.........wow!!!
Constant growth in your art. Dedication to advancement in technique and musical knowledge. All the while such groove and dynamic control. These are the reasons you are absolutely my favourite musician on the planet, Steve. Bravo man.
Steve Smith with sleeves rolled up you can predict you are in for something special. Dudes technique so evolved almost effortless (whole band too I should say is outstanding). I think the most amazing thing I've seen SS do. Blazing stuff.
My condolences to you on the loss of Andy! I saw him perform with your group Vital Information NY Edition at the Dakota in Minneapolis in 2015. It was magical! I enjoy watching youtube clips of Andy playing the Buddy Rich Big Band too!
As a Journey fan I’ve heard for years that Steve is a well accomplished jazz player and just assumed, yeah, I’m sure he’s good, I believe it. After watching this I’m embarrassed how badly I underestimated his playing would be. My apologies. How he played that in the first place is amazing but to do so seemingly effortlessly and then get up at the end and not have a drop of sweat is just a musical and athletic feat of elite playing.
Does anyone know the two other Zildjian rides Steve plays in this recording? I know that during Andy’s solo he’s playing a 19” Beautiful Baby but I don’t know the other ones he is using so if anyone does please let me know! I would love to add them to my collection of Zildjians that I play! Awesome job ‘Machine Gun’ and everyone else!
Steve's playing is mind blowing.
Yeah! You can say that again ! Phew !
Best thing I think I've ever seen him do. Correction. Best thing I've seen anyone do.
Full Zen like machine gun.
Steve Smith is my official favorite drummer of all time and this video is one reason why. But I'll still bust him on losing his stick at :50 mark, haha. The look on his face afterwards is priceless!
Best drumming I’ve seen in a long, long time.
Just such skills

Hard stuff to play. Andy was always great.
Whoever said bass guitar doesn’t swing? Great communication between that bass player and Steve’s ride cymbal……
Steve is a super star
Really nice playing from all. Steve is really burning here. RIP Andy. What a fine player he was.

"Be like water" is the style and technique of this playing. Amazing! 👍
Such a combination of chops and pocket! Amazing drumming.
This kind of craziest gig ever… a pity not having been there
You make it look so easy Steve. This is such a nice performance.
Damn Steve this was fantastic. Great band. Really nice drumming , really. Sincerely !

Wow !
still love your work!!
Just amazing, a Buddy Rich style temp and from a very calm Steve which shows how in control that he can just relax into the gig.

And all the time looking around, smiling, enjoying the performance of his buds, the audience while playing at 100mph.
