I copied this one to my wife, born in Colombia. Great that you spelled the country correctly (Americans are prone to spelling "Columbia") and pronounced it right. My wife's great uncles fought for the United States in Korea, then settled in the U.S. after the war, thereby rooting the family here. She grew up in the 1950s during La Violencia, when each party was fighting for towns and raising their flag over them. Because her great uncles were rooted in the USA in the 50's, whe was able to get here in the 90s. Nice job of covering a facet of the war that is often overlooked. I know some Latin American countries like Brazil sent combat troops to the European theater. At least with Colombia we had a friendly neighbor who kept our men supplied with coffee, when the Germans couldn't get any. Even a little thing like that makes a difference in war.
Just to be clear there are a lot of places in the US named Columbia. Even the United States as a whole was nearly named Columbia. Just saying in case you're mistaking instances of someone referring to a town or such named Columbia as actually meaning Colombia.
@@MintyLime703 This happens a lot. When I tell people my wife is from Colombia, they think it's Columbia, South Carolina. Of course, our national capital is in the District of Columbia. And the song we learned as kids: "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean!" The CBS television network is the Columbia Broadcasting System. The Canadian province of British Columbia, and so on. The synonym of Columbia for the USA and part of Canada seems to have been more common in the vernacular decades abo.
I'm an American expat living in Colombia and, other than being aware that Germans were interned, I know little of Colombia's role in WW2. Thanks for this video. It was quite informative and interesting. I think Nazis escaped to Colombia as they did to other Latin American countries and there were Nazi sympathizers before and during the war, as well.
the Mexican "Aztec Eagles" Squadron fought in the Pacific, especially the reconquering of the Phillipines, about 300 airmen, including 36 Pilots, flying about 800 missions on P 47s
Congratulations on this new show .It was an informative and wonderful historical coverage video about Colombia 🇨🇴 participants in WW2 besides allies.. also, video clearly explained past political events of Colombia 🇨🇴 which were orchestrated by the US influences in Colombia 🇨🇴 and its biased groups. Thank you 🙏 ( History Hustle) channel for sharing. This magnificent video and good luck for 🙏 you ( Sir Stefan)
The Airlines company you mentioned, which is Avianca today was a German-Colombian enterprise. It is the oldest airline company in the world. That's the reason why Colombians were not concern about the company. Also, most of the "german" immigrants were catholics from Bavavarian and often Austria. Also, a lot of the jews were from Germany but on their papers were denominated as Germans. Another reason why there no immediate concern to take over Geman assets until German units began attacking civilian shipping. Today a lot of the biggest factories are still run by descendants if German immigrants. Many of them arrived to the country in the 19th century during the federal period during a 2 decade period of rapid industrialization. Around the same time Argentina became a developed country and South America was experiencing immigration waves.
I would be interested in Equator and Peru during WWII, since they fought a little war. If you head down that way, try a video. BTW, this is a nice video!
Yes, with the exception of Brazil, contributions made by other Latin American countries to the Allied cause don't get many mentions. The tiny Cuban navy sank at least one U-Boat. Mexico deployed one air force fighter group (equipped with American-made P-47s) to the Pacific. Etc...
Love your work as always mate! Also loved that you linked to The Cold War for their video of La Violencia, two of my favourite TH-cam content creators showing each other the love, History folk looking after History folk - take that TH-cam algorithm 😅
Absolutely love your stuff. Colombo American who is a huge fan of your channel. Shows archaic info never covered Funny story my father told me of the Germans in Colombia who were interned. In this only 4 star hotel where the President visited them once a week
Great vídeo, Thanks for sharing. In Brazil the expeditionary force of WW 2 are called “Pracinhas” and there was a very famous quote by president Vargas over the war: Is easier for a Snake to smoke then to brazil enter the war. When brazil declared war to the axis powers, the newspappers where all saying: The Snake has smoked hahahah This is a very good joke about impossible things to happen and people still uses to this day
At this time, Brazil was on the right side of History. Staying aligned with US is what ensures some trade freedom to the conntinent. Obrigado, Stefan! ヽ(͡◕ ͜ʖ ͡◕)ノ 🍀 🇧🇷
My family arrived from Poland to Colombia in 1880s as we know in the family they were very scary when wars started as there was nazis movements in Colombia too
Stop talking so much rubbish that Nazis or anything is a gringo Khazarian, although what is expected of another Polish Khazarian telling lies when many innocent Germans were massacred and taken out of the country because of the shitty CIA and without telling what just happened to them to On the day of the Bogotazo, many of those who still remained, the only Nazis are you, the Jazarians, gringos, Polish French, English, Israelis, Turks, Russians, and more out there.
You should do a documentary on El Salvador during WWII. Ideologically allied with the axis powers and exporting to Germany while also taking in thousands of Jewish refugees by giving them blank passports. Also, General Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez received a letter from Hitler.
@@HistoryHustlethe security situation there has greatly improved thanks to measures imparted by the new president. But regardless, I’ve loved these looks into Latin America during WWII. It is incredible how much german influence you can find in Colombia, f.e. beer, Avianca and education.
Yes, in other Latin American countries also.
My grandfather worked for Club Colombia beer which is a Bavarian German company.
