      Why are they standing infront of them and jeering them?

      @@adventuressdcafansub7249 Well the Tatmadaw (Burmese armed forces) has responded with brutal crackdowns and citizens are now taking up arms in Shan State, Kayah, Mobye, Mindat, and other places. The NUG (Burmese government in exile) has created the PDF (People Defense Force), a rival militia to counter the Tatmadaw. As of now at least 850+ people are dead and thousands are arbitrarily arrested. Bomb attacks have also increased since the coup but it is unclear whether the bombs are created and placed by the Tatmadaw or by the resistance.

    The reporter was so respectful and allowed the interviewees the opportunity to truly give their side of the story. Seeing him tear up a little at the end when they shouted resistance was a breath of fresh air to see a reporter care so deeply. Well done Vice!

    • @kneecapwho
      @kneecapwho 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree with him being compassionate...BUT he also has to be more critical. His questions and comments are self-affirming (see 15:41). He might as well be speaking FOR the protestors. This makes it hard to discern whether this is the view of a small pocket of Colombian society or a reflection of society as a whole. What do Colombians think about not having access to critical supplies from the port, for example? I'd like to see more journalism, and less editorialism from Vice, personally...even though I agree with your assessment to some degree.

    • @dukeboy51
      @dukeboy51 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@kneecapwho Although not every Colombian is having problems with having access to these supplies you mention, it is unfortunately the only way to put pressure on the government to sit down with the protesters and with different representatives from different groups and reach agreements to improve many things that are so wrong. It is also a way of showing other people with privileges (mostly living in the big cities and sometimes disconnected from reality) that there are a lot of problems that need to be solved. The answer from the government has just been responding with state violence and showing how disconnected they are from the people and their needs.

      So Vice gets to cover these stories first, and Vice also is a big name that can find more people who are willing to do investigations in more dangerous places. Never forget that the people who do this are usually at risk, and it's not a job most people keep for long.

    I spent a year living in Bogotá, and I was there in 2019 when the latest string of protests began. Living in Bogotá, and visiting some cities and villages outside, I saw everywhere how resourceful, strong, and compassionate the people of Colombia are.
    I wondered how a country with such a hardworking, smart population, huge natural resources, and an amazing strategic position on two oceans, and the only land border between North America and South America could be so underdeveloped. It didn't take long to become clear that there's a simple answer. Colombia has never had good government. Since independence, it's remained fully under control by the Spanish elite and their families, disguised as a multiparty system, but the only ones who win elections and stay alive are the right and far right parties.
    Don't give up the fight, Colombianos. Your people, your country have nowhere to go but up. Just stay strong, and make sure that next year, a good candidate wins the presidency. Petro is running again, I think. He would be a good start. Primera Linea, you might have to be his protection. You know what happened the last time a left-wing president was elected.

      The People of Colombia are literally rising up against a government installed by the US of A, the same sort of government the US has been attempting to install in countries like Bolivia and Venezuela. Your 'opportunity' is based on the US multinational corporations deeply exploiting the natural resources, industry and labor of countries just like Colombia and accumulating an immense wealth at the direct expense of the greater portion of the world. The People of Colombia are literally rising up against a government installed by the US. The EU does the same thing too, by the way. If you actually care, you should oppose US and EU Imperialism. You should also recognize why the US is friends with insane countries like Saudi Arabia and Israel, and yet the US always relies on heavy propaganda to demonize and impose embargoes against any country trying to become economically independent, in order to prepare to send people like you in to "occupy" the country.

This doesn't mean that they're invaluable as demonstrations as what governments trying to implement leftist policy can lead to, but you also forget to mention other projects that have become relatively stable or were for their time non authoritarian like revolutionary Catalonia, the territory of the revolutionary zapatista rebels in Mexico, or even the paris commune in 1871 although it was very short lived. I got interested in this whole phenomenon after hearing about it from some friends in Colombia. What I don't get is what they're demanding, as it seems unrealistic. They started protesting because of a strong tax hike was proposed... but now they're asking for universal basic income and other stuff that requires a way bigger tax reform to be done. I also noticed that those at the negotiations look like old union leaders, not very representative of the youth. Finally, I know that the narrative around here is that this is a completely organic movement from alienated youths but I still have my doubts as there seems to be more than meets the eye.

    • @karolsantamaria7334

      Colombian here: This goes beyond the tax reform, on 2019 the protests begun, but because of covid everything was paused. We've been protesting because our right to protest has been vulnerated, because most of the population doesn't get a decent pension, and by that i mean something that at least will help you pay rent when you're old, most old people i know (over 60) still work for the day to day. Because we have little access to education, specially in rural towns, because the police are killing us in protests, and the government denies it, because our president in the middle of the pandemic kept favouring the ultra rich, and gave little to no help to small and middle business.
      We're not asking for crazy things. We're asking for what's written in our constitution

      Yea, i am a little worried about what their goals are... They think big government will solve all their problems. The government sucks at running anything, so the only thing you will get from big government is more disappointment... And the more it slides into the type of government the people think they want, that authoritarian leftists government, they will oppress you even more after they chase out all the rich people. But eh maybe im wrong. Colombia absorbed a lot of people from Venezuela, and i wouldnt be surprised if they also absorbed operatives from the venezuelan government trying to destabilize Colombia.

    Love from Nigeria. We had the youth fighting the govt too and they also lied about the deaths.
    We need a worldwide revolution for real equality.
    Keep your head up, you are not alone.
