Brother Extra Tough Sewing Machine - First Impressions and Putting it Trough its Paces

  • The Brother FS60X Extra Tough computerised sewing machine is new on the market here in New Zealand, and other countries I assume, as of late 2020.
    I'm going to unbox and give my first impressions, also I'll put it through its paces and see if it's suitable for denim, as stated on the box.
    Suitable for denim is one thing, but how thick a denim seam can it handle? A denim jean leg hem has up to 12 layers of denim.
    I test the machine with a 35 weight thread suitable for the job and Schmetz Jeans Needle size 110/18.
    It seems to me that this machine is direct competition to the Singer Heavy Duty type machines, although the Singer machines are mechanical where as the Brother here is computerised.
    It boasts a heavy duty metal frame, powerful motor, 60 built in stitches, suitable for denim and stretch fabrics.

    I make my own pants. I dont use denim. I used a winter fleece. It seems like this was easier for my sewing machine to handle. I did have a Juki full setup, but that was too much, its for a factory floor. I gave that away for free. Some lucky person got it. I mucked up my singer heavy duty, and it need the timing done. I really like seeing you sew that hem. It seems like the FS60 might be a machine worth taking a look at.

It looks good and seemed to work well but has had very little use. Now daughter has gone flatting. About to pickup a desk for it actually and my wife might start using it.

    I have a Brother FS70. It has the same black leveling button on the back of the main foot. When the front of the foot starts to rise you lift the foot (needle down), press the black button in, then lower the foot. It stays level for the thick part then returns to normal when you get back to the main sewing. The FS70 isn't heavy duty but it goes through denim like a hot knife through butter.

    One if the best reviews i have seen.i am about to return my Singer so called HD machine as it struggles to do 4 layers of Sunbrella.😮.I suspect that the gears are still plastic on the singer.
    Should the tool be placed Under the material as it passes over the hump to push it up and keep it closer to the foot?
    Am looking at this or the 80 as an alternative? Does it has metal gears??. Thanks

  • @acebacker1
    @acebacker1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent! Very helpful and instructive, and I like your cat 😊.
    I wonder if you placed your Husqvarna tool UNDER the material as you ‘come down off the hill’ whether you’d be less likely to gat the jump stitch? (Bit dangerous - easy to miss the gap, hit the plastic, and break the needle.)
    I’ll go hunting for more of your videos. Thank you.

    I think I have the US version of your machine. Looks very different, but mostly same features.
    Haven't tried denim yet, but it did well with thick foam and several layers of thick cotton and medium weight stabilizer. I know my older machine would have come apart at the seams, especially over seams.
    Found it much easier to use the handwheel over thick denim seams in the past. Will probably do the same with this machine if I remember.
    Now you have me wanting to buy denim just to test my "strong and tough" machine.

    Can you adjust the foot pressure with this machine? Is it big enough to sew bags etc? Cuz this one seems to be the best for the price for beginners and I want to buy this one.

    Great to see the machine travel through the 12 layers on the hem. My personal nightmare when altering jeans are those thick seams. Tomorrow I am picking up one of these Brother FS60X so now I feel it is a great choice. Just a tiny hint, when I approach those thick seams I press the black button on the side of the foot which levels the foot over seams. It works on my other machines apart from they struggle with the thickness. Just wondering if you try what I say if you will still get those slip stitches. Maybe in a later video of yours, I may find out. Thank you for putting this up.

    Hello! I have an FS60X too. I am just wondering....is the thread tension dial supposed to be set at around 7~8? I thought for the thicker fabric, the tension dial should be set to a lower number? A looser tension is to be used for thicker fabric, am I correct? Please do correct me.

    • @InStitches
      @InStitches  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Generally, for heavy work the tension needs to be increased, especially when using a heavier thread and needle.
