I got a second hand brother LX2500 to keep at my son's home for when I'm there during long trips to Montana as I live in Hawaii...Glad you said you liked the LX3817A as the one my son got for me is the sister model.❤

I wish I could really express my appreciation for ur videos, and u have a calm, informative, & friendly way of speaking that I need in order to get anything out of these videos. Finding that is easier said than done 😂 I'm at beginner level but I've sewn off and on since home economics. This video answers so many questions but ur think ahead way of describing made me actually think OK what is it that I'm trying to get done here? My 1st grand baby is on her so I want to make her some cute things and I want to make my 3 fur babies some clothes. I just found your channel yesterday and I was sooo impressed with your video !!! This is the best review I have ever seen !!!! You have got yourself a very happy new subscriber !!! You speak so slowly and show everything carefully!!! Two things I wanted to share: first is about the fact that most of the sewing machines these days aren’t including instructions with the machine. I didn’t realize that this would be a problem but because I don’t have a printer I went to my local Office Depot to have it printed. I was told that they would not do it because it was copyrighted . I had to find a private printing place to get it made . The second thing I found out by accident. In the singer sewing book when they are telling you how to thread the automatic needle, they don’t mention that the needle has to be in the center position. Of course that makes perfect sense but I didn’t know that my needle was on the right !!! I couldn’t figure out why my threader wouldn’t work !!! I am looking forward to binging some of your other videos!!!!

The needle position marker on the wheel can be fixed on any machine by just cutting and sticking a paper arrow on the wheel marking the position. You will then both see and feel that arrow. No big deal.

This might be the best sewing machine review I've ever seen. Almost every other review is just like "Wow, it has 5000 stitches! 3 of which you might actually use! And it does buttons!" and that's it. This one actually covers things like features, how easy it is to use, the work area it has, what the stitches actually are, and very importantly to me- The noise level! I have no idea why noise level isn't a core part of all sewing machine reviews, but thank you for finally doing it right.

The Janome Arctic Crystal does have a thread cutter. I've seen other reviewers use it, I believe it's on the back of the machine near the needle (the machine I used briefly 20 years ago had the cutter in the same spot but I can't describe it very well, it's like you drag the thread down the back of the needle assembly??).

Hello at mom does stuff.i just subscribed to ur channel last night .I hope u had an amazing Thanksgiving. I would like to ask for ur opinion out of the sewing machines u have gone over there are 3 that I really think I would like however I'm going to be purchasing a machine soon an im a beginner I'm not sure what would be the best fit for me starting out. I like the janome artic crystal,but it noise level seems loud an I liked the brother lx3817A .an the very last one I truly liked for the speed control feature an the sewing feature without the pedal an the button push feature for the reverse sewing.but since I'm just starting out an im going to be taking some classes an also doing some self learning when not in class out of those 3 machines do u think or recommend any of those for a beginner an what do u think would work best. This will probably be the only sewing machine I will be purchasing for some time so take that into account to. What would be easiest in ur opinion an most helpful. I do hope you see this comment an would absolutely love to hear back from you advice appreciated.

But, the Brother ST150HDH (the last one) is my hands down favorite. It’s very beginner friendly and also has a lot of features that will keep you satisfied for a long time. Hey mom! Are you willing to donate a machine or giveaway?
Just thought I’d pass along a cool tip about the Brother XM2701. Maybe everyone knew this but me, but if you always end your sewing with the raised notch on the flywheel at the top position, then when you cut the threads on the side cutter, more likely than not, you have enough thread length behind the needle to be able to just start sewing again. What this means is you’re not wasting a bunch of thread behind the needle in an attempt to prevent having to keep rethreading the needle all the time as I was. It would drive me crazy when I hadn’t started with enough initial thread length behind the needle that it’d unthread. It doesn’t work 100% of the time but enough to make it worth trying. I hope this is a clear enough description of what I mean because it was a game changer when I figured it out. Not sure if this feature works on other machines.
FYI: my machine came with a physical manual and a DVD to show you everything.

omg this was so helpful thank you so much i was wondering how to prevent rethreading the needle a million times, it gets so frustrating!!
It also becomes second nature to stop the machine with the notch at the top so I don’t even think about it anymore!
This is great because I randomly decided to make my mermaid costume for The Little Mermaid premier coming in about 2 weeks! I bought a whole costume online, pre-made but the color of scales fabric didn’t came as the picture made it look (supposed to be oil slick iridescent but mine came all blue - which I would normally LOVE but not this particular time😅 plus it’s too short and I’m already short @ 5’5” - so I decided I can make my own, customize it to my liking. Problem is IVE NEVERRRR SEWN BEFORE!😅😅😅 so I’m in GO mode. Learning the stitches, types of thread, the needle, which sewing machine to go with. I was thinking used like a Kenmore or something from another video I watched because of the heavy duty-ness but other than that I was going to go with the two blue/aqua ones bc that’s in my fav color range. So we’ll see. I might comment back what I ended up getting, but I’m still researching.

Interesting video and well researched but it’s a bit annoying because you constantly refer to any child that might want to learn to sew as “little girls”. Just FYI boys can, (and sometimes want to), learn to sew as well so it might behoove you to make any future videos not so female centric.
I definitely stand corrected. In fact, my son is the only one of my children who likes to sew.

I love the Brothers. They are so quiet. The LX3817 is the one I grab if it’s just something quick and simple. But, the Brother ST150HDH is my favorite.

Wow, great job, very informative. My current, thrift store find machine, finally bit the dust. I used to sew garments back in the day but now only make garments occasionally. I mostly mend and craft sewing these days. I want power and the last two machines on your video were the Singer HD4452 and the Brother Strong and Tough. I am an old school twist the dial girl, nothing fancy, straight stitch and zigzag, but I think for me to get power I may have to 'get with the times' and go computerized... Between the two machines I've mentioned, are they comparable in power?
The Singer feels a lot more solid, but it's also very loud. With the right needle the Brother would probably sew through anything you needed and do it more quietly. Thanks for watching!

I'd like to see a review for the brother xr9550. No one has done a review or comparison with that machine although it seems like a lot of value for around $200. I'm just concerned about thick seams or heavy material like denim or leather. But it seems beginner friendly with many stitch options. I'd like to make things like wallets and backpacks.
For heavier duty work, I don't think anything is going to beat the Singer 4452. I don't have a lot of experience with those types of fabrics, but I am working with some now. I hope to have some answers soon. Thanks for watching!
@@momdoesstuff I've read some reviews on Amazon saying it has a difficult time going through thick seams, but I wonder if those people are just using the wrong type of needle. I'm kind of thinking I want to get one of those cheaper Brother sewing and embroidery machines now, that would be cool to add custom designs to your work. But idk I keep going back and forth with my budget and as a beginner who has never used a sewing machine lol.

Honestly, any of them will sew as many clothes as you want. Mostly, depends on whether you want a lot of decorative stitches or automatic buttonholes.

Hi there, looking to purchase the Brother XM2701, but have two questions I'm hoping you can help with 🙂
1. How many layers of demin can the XM2701 sew through neatly?
2. You mentioned there's a newer model out. I can't seem to find it online. Do you perhaps know the model number?

The newer model is the GX37. I haven’t tried it yet, but looks like it does have 10 more stitches.
Denim has different weights. So it all depends on what weight and how many layers you want to see through. If you plan on doing a lot of heavier fabrics, you will probably want to use a walking foot to help feed evenly. You might want to look at the Singer Heavy Duty line. I know they would handle it and the 4452 comes with the walking foot.
