I just bought a Brother XR9550. I finally get to learn to sew like my grandma did. Also an older gentleman here, term used loosely. I've never sewn a stich before and just set up the machine yesterday. I know someday it will be second nature, but now everything is difficult, but a fun challenge. I’m an old lady who’s used every old Singer machine ever made (probably)😅….I have 4 old machines that date back at least 60 years, from my Mom & Sister. This will be a test of my sewing & computerized skill capability. But Sheree truly did an exceptional job & covered just about all the sewing skills I plan to use. I’ve always had Singers & not thrilled with Brother’s Spool 🧵 directing. I like upright spools especially when using more than 1 thread. I do wonder what we do if we want to use a double thread? So THANKS 🙏🏼 SHEREE…. You made it so easy to understand. Superb!
I still my old machines. They are treasures. And so we’ll built. But the computerized machines add some ease to doing specially stitches that I personally think are worth it if you like to create with fancy stitches. I personally use mine a lot in sewing and quilting. As for using two threads, I think Dritz brand sells a tool that sits on the table next to your machine and allows you to use for double threads with twin stitching. It works great. This is a comment and a question, I just got this sewing machine for an early Christmas present from my husband. I don't know how to sew or use a sewing machine, but my husband does am willing to learn a lot about sewing on a sewing machine and you're pretty much teaching me a lot by watching. My question is what type of thread to use to make simple beginning things like an apron because am more in the kitchen then anything.

The Brother X9550 is a huge step up from my old but current machine (worn the socks of mine). I enjoy all the stitches. Really a very nice model by Brother. ~ L
I am new to sewing but pretty handy. I have become obsessed with wanting to make canvas zipper bags for organizational purposes. Would this machine be appropriate? There seems to be a $200 price point where every basic machine is landing. I understand I don’t need an actual industrial machine, etc. and I would be doing simple projects and mending. Thoughts?
This machine should certainly handle seeing simple canvas zipper bags. I’d use a needle for heavy weight fabrics. For the price point, you just get a lot of functionality and machine to play around with. I’ve been sewing for decades, starting on a machine way more basic than this one and made all kinds of suits, fancy dresses and more. As you see more and realize it’s something you want to continue, you can always upgrade. That’s what I did. Check to see the return policy as well. If you can get a 30 day return policy, you can try it and see if it suits your needs. Good luck!
I'd like to see a leather and denim test. I am not sure if I want the brother strong and tough model for heavy duty material or if this does the same and can go through just as many layers.
Did or do you need to change the tension often? How do you know when you need to change it? I’m considering buying one for my Mother but she always messes up the tension. Does the book give you ideas?
You’ll need to change the tension depending on the type of fabric you are use. For most things you can use the auto of mid-point that’s indicated. It’s all in the manual.
I do, but I won't be filming much with it. I did a big sewing machine giveaway for National Sewing Month and this was just a quick demo of the one of the 4 machines I gave away. I am sure if you search on TH-cam you will find some more detailed reviews from people who use this machine as their main machine. The manufacturer's website might have some detailed video reviews also, so check there as well. Good luck!

I did not test that. This video was just to show a machine I gave away. Look up the machine in the company website and the description should advice you on its ability to do what you need it to do.
I have this sewing machine brand new, but when you were showing the stitches you did not show the lcd screen to see what numbers were displaying. Also, what number should the circle be set on when sewing I saw you had it on 4 . I was having problems with my stitching it was not sewing evenly showing the same stitches in front and back.
I’m not sure if you missed the intro but this is not a full review but a quick look. This video was part of a giveaway series where I bought and gave away 4 beginner friendly sewing machines. You have the machine, so you should do as I suggested and get a piece of fabric and just play with each stitch. The stitch design is displayed right on the machine. So you should see them and can play around with combinations. This is not my personal sewing machine that I sew with so I’m not thoroughly familiar with every aspect of it. If your manual isn’t helpful, search for videos on adjusting tension-that’s what usually causes uneven stitches. Perhaps your bobbin is loaded incorrectly. I hope you figure it out and be sure to fill out your warranty in case you just got a bad machine. Good luck!

I am a fan of gutterman brand thread but any all purpose sewing thread should be fine for you-coats and cloths, etc. Enjoy your new machine!

Yes, it’s meant to act as a table extension. You can push the button to disengage/drop the feed dogs for free motion quilting.

I am new to sewing but pretty handy. I have become obsessed with wanting to make canvas zipper bags for organizational purposes. Would this machine be appropriate? There seems to be a $200 price point where every basic machine is landing. I understand I don’t need an actual industrial machine, etc. and I would be doing simple projects and mending. Thoughts?
This machine should certainly handle seeing simple canvas zipper bags. I’d use a needle for heavy weight fabrics. For the price point, you just get a lot of functionality and machine to play around with. I’ve been sewing for decades, starting on a machine way more basic than this one and made all kinds of suits, fancy dresses and more. As you see more and realize it’s something you want to continue, you can always upgrade. That’s what I did. Check to see the return policy as well. If you can get a 30 day return policy, you can try it and see if it suits your needs. Good luck!

You can definitely attach it and use for regular sewing.
I'd like to see a leather and denim test. I am not sure if I want the brother strong and tough model for heavy duty material or if this does the same and can go through just as many layers.

Did or do you need to change the tension often? How do you know when you need to change it? I’m considering buying one for my Mother but she always messes up the tension. Does the book give you ideas?
You’ll need to change the tension depending on the type of fabric you are use. For most things you can use the auto of mid-point that’s indicated. It’s all in the manual.

I did not test that. This video was just to show a machine I gave away. Look up the machine in the company website and the description should advice you on its ability to do what you need it to do.
What free motion presser foot are you using? I need to buy one for this exact machine.
All the presser feet I demonstrated came with the machine.
I have this sewing machine brand new, but when you were showing the stitches you did not show the lcd screen to see what numbers were displaying. Also, what number should the circle be set on when sewing I saw you had it on 4 . I was having problems with my stitching it was not sewing evenly showing the same stitches in front and back.
I’m not sure if you missed the intro but this is not a full review but a quick look. This video was part of a giveaway series where I bought and gave away 4 beginner friendly sewing machines.
You have the machine, so you should do as I suggested and get a piece of fabric and just play with each stitch. The stitch design is displayed right on the machine. So you should see them and can play around with combinations. This is not my personal sewing machine that I sew with so I’m not thoroughly familiar with every aspect of it. If your manual isn’t helpful, search for videos on adjusting tension-that’s what usually causes uneven stitches. Perhaps your bobbin is loaded incorrectly. I hope you figure it out and be sure to fill out your warranty in case you just got a bad machine. Good luck!
