    My journey is really weird because like 90% of my acclimation to horror movies happened with me watching any horror movies... it was all Dead Meat. Watching somebody else summarize a movie with jokes and behind the scenes info really took the pressure off, but I was still getting accustomed to them all the while.
    It was so effective personally that when I watched The Haunting of Hill House (which was also what opened the floodgates for me) it was barely scary at all, but it was so enthralling I still have not found a piece of horror I love more.
    Which is kind of sad that I haven't gotten been truly scared by a movie since the raptors in Jurassic Park, and may never be again. Oh well, horror has so much more offer so much more than just getting spooked.

      I like to know as little about a movie as I can going in, so I don't think that strategy would have fit well for me. But I could see that being a useful entry point for many!
      Funny that Hill House was also your big splash moment of going deep on horror. I think it's one of the best shows ever made, and absolutely everyone should watch it! But there is some *horrifying* stuff in there that is absolutely not meant for a newbie haha.
      While I'm much more accustomed to horror, I still get scared by them all the time. It doesn't follow me after the credits roll the way it used to. But even seeing The First Omen for the first time earlier in the week, there were moments that had me completely on edge!

    I didn't get into horror via movies, but rather TV shows like Courage The Cowardly Dog and Goosebumps. I now love watching horror films with my brother and picking them apart afterwards.

      I grew up with Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of The Dark. Maybe they helped me in some small ways? But I still had an impossible time getting into horror movies. That step up in scares, meant for a more mature audience, always did me in. I saw a bit of Courage The Cowardly Dog too! That show was delightfully insane, and *really* pushed the boundary of kid-friendly horror.

    My horror recommendations:
    May The Devil Take You 1 and 2 are love letters to the Evil Dead movies from a maniacal director from Indonesian. The one word that best describes them is "gnarly".
    One Cut of the Dead is possibly the funniest movie you'll ever see. It might seem really dumb for the first 40 minutes, but stick with it and you'll understand why it had to be like that and see how the payoff is a once in a lifetime experience.
    The Coffee Table is a new movie from this year and it's the most horrifying movie I've ever seen. I would recommend going in blind if you think you can, but if you really feel the need to check for trigger warnings don't hesitate to do so. It is very upsetting.

      4 movies I've never seen!!
      I've found international horror films to be a really interesting journey though. At their best, horror movies are a reflection of current real-world fears (eg. Immaculate, The First Omen and Alien: Romulus all including major plot points surrounding the terrors of forced pregnancy and childbirth). So non-American horror can be a really interesting insight into global culture and struggles!

    I am currently in that phase where I am fully not watching horror.
    A year ago I was at a friend’s Halloween party and we watched The Meg. I was terrified and I specifically remember being in the car home, and one of my favourite songs came on the radio. I remember feeling like a sense of safety had washed over me. Like I had just resurfaced from the bottom of a lake. Since then the only horror movie I watched was The Menu, and that one’s not really that horrory.
    I also watched Sixth Sense a few years ago too, but I don’t really remember it that much.

      Another reason I don’t like horror is probably because I don’t like gross out at all

    • @thescreamingicecube4666
      @thescreamingicecube4666 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also hate jump scares with a burning pasion

    • @2leftframes
      @2leftframes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you don't have the stomach for gore and gross-out stuff, that's going to eliminate a LOT of horror. Desensitization is a real thing, but it's absolutely ok to draw a line there and decide that's not worth it for yourself.
      If you do still want to experiment with no-gore horror, The Others is a great pick! I'd also recommend Misery, Signs, and Coherence. All of these movies are much more character-driven, and are closer to thrillers than straight horror. They (almost?) all have jump scares. But it's not just random bullshit being thrown at you! When they're handled well, they're much more fun than they are cheap and annoying.

    I had a lot of experiences with horror.
    From nightmares, flash games, urban legends of our village and of course kids describing to each other what they heard horror movies were about since our parent didn't allow us to see them.
    At the end i got too curious and secretly watched the american remake of The Ring.
    I loved how it built its atmosphere and the psychological aspects of its horror. The whole movie has you feeling despair knowing that those people probably can't avoid their fate, but they have to try.

    While watching I was planning my comment and I had to keep rewriting it in my head right up until the end with that last shot from Dead Alive. And yes, there's many good entry level horror to ease people in. The original Poltergeist, The Frighteners, Ghost Busters, The People Under the Stairs, Beetlejuice and yes, Dead Alive. Then there's all the subcategories! Slashers, supernatural, creature feature, body horror, ghosts, demons\Devil, cursed EVERYTHING (land, homes, trinkets, lineage, clothes, cars, boats, crypts, insulted gypsies and more!). I'd even consider Drag Me to Hell entry level horror. I could watch a single horror film a day and probably not get to all of them. Often a film goes under the radar and I stumble onto a gem that for some reason was largely ignored, like Dead Birds or The Devil's Backbone, two outstanding films. Then there's When Evil Lurks, Terrified and... I could go on and on. I. Love. Horror.

    • @2leftframes
      @2leftframes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought about including movies like Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice. I think their PG ratings mean they never really go far enough. It's probably a nice way to introduce kids to horror vibes without traumatizing them! But I don't think they'd move the needle much for the average adult whose never found a way to grow comfortable with horror.
      I LOVE Raimi. I should really bump Drag Me To Hell up higher on my own list. I have no idea why I haven't gotten around to that one sooner. With Hill House being my seminal horror exposure, I've only been getting deeper into the genre within the last ~5 years. So the likes of Dead Birds, The Devil's Backbone, When Evil Lurks, and Terrified are all new to me!!
