- There were an estimated 10,000 grizzly bears in California in 1850, and less than 75 years later, there were none. Yosemite's past is filled with stories of this magnificent animal. For an audio described version of this video, go to • California Grizzly - Y... .
6:00 "perhaps we shouldn't take over every wild place and wild thing"
it's funny how we always come to that realization a lot too late.
That was very sad. What are we doing to this world?
I was literally thinking about this at work today, so awesome
I believe we should re-introduce the Grizzly to the Sierras. It, along with the wolf, needs to com back to the area and take back it's home.
There is a female wolf with cubs living here in the Sierra Valley. Of course the ranchers are all pissed off that they can’t dispose of their dead cattle in “bone piles”. I’m rooting for the wolves.
I heard a comment from comment replies that there is 3 grizzly bears left in California but there probly alive somewhere or maybe dead
They reintroduce them again 2 years ago but they should bring more grizzly bears in California like in big bear,Sierra Nevada,Yosemite
And then we can bring back the T-rex and Velociraptors. It makes perfect sense. What could possibly go wrong?
@@gpdude22 No, that doesn't make sense. What would bringing back dinosaurs do, other than please paleontologists, children & Jurassic Park fans? Especially since dinosaurs would essentially become an invasive species if ever released.
@@somedude9528 It's so entertaining when sarcasm is wasted on the feeble-minded.
The very last grizzly bear spotted in California , was in 1922, in Sequoia National Forest. Even the Black bear population seems to be dwindling.
It was shot in 1922
The last was spotted in 1924
Black bears dwindling your a idiot we have way to many because of hunting restrictions they are now showing up in the valley I live in Mariposa and have had several in my yard and break into neighbors house because they are starving because they are over populated just like the mnt lions and the bad forest management keeps us from clearing brush and trees to grow food for them and deer
Great video. I don't recall John Muir writing about Grizzly Bears but I'm sure he encountered them. They have reintroduced the Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep to Yosemite.
One animal can't bring back, how foolishly blind we can be a real shame!
Bring over grizzlies from Yellowstone national Park.
great
Crazy how the mountain lion population has exploded and is essentially doing what the grizzlies had in the past hopefully they don’t make the same decision as they did with the bears
Pumas are now spreading back to recolonize the eastern half of North America. There's plenty of habitat from them there to thrive and MORE than enough whitetail deer to hunt.
It should be more important to us to revive the species in their home ranges then to have tourism in these places I would gladly give away my tourism for these animals to be restored ❤
Half the people in this comment section are batshit crazy. 😅
So sad.
Part of the growth. Seeing the horrendous acts of humanity in third person perspective can help apply the same thought to our daily lifestyle or those of others.
I am not sad. I am grateful that they are extinct. They rought havoc on ranchers, explorers and anyone who ventured out into the wilderness which was most of California at the time. They failed to mention that the California Grizzly get up to over 2,000 pounds. Though they only occasionally killed people and there is only one or two historic examples of them eating people, they wounded dozens and dozens. Everyone who ventured out into the wild had to have someone who carried a large caliber gun. I would not like that life now and am glad they are gone and extinct.
concerned1313 California would be better off with grizzly bears eating people
@@iWrestleUSA I am sorry that you view humanity in that regard. I get frustrated myself with people sometimes, but I have faith in god and overall I believe in the majority of humans. Maybe, you are one of those anarchist who believes in only the strongest will survive, or do you want everyone to carry a gun, what's your medicine?
@@concerned1313 if people can’t handle living sustainably in ecosystems they don’t deserve to live in them at all. There isn’t supposed to be ranching in those areas. Thinking humans are more important than entire ecosystems is so selfish.
Please bring these beautiful beasts back.
There is no reason not to have Yellowstone Grizzlies brought to Yosemite. They are over populated and soon will be hunted outside Yellowstone. The Present Wolfs came from Canada to Yellowstone and The Extinct Elk in The Smoke Mountains were replaced by Canadian Elk. I live in Wyoming 120 miles from Yellowstone. Grizzlies are not a problem where I live or in Yellowstone. They have rules to follow. If you follow them your perfectly safe!
So question: why doesn't California bring some grizzlies from Alaska and release them in Yosemite?. Would they survive given the climate differences?.
I think more lack of habitat & more so, food sources for a large carnivore. No elk calves in spring, no more salmon runs....
Naif Dalbahi just like they did with wolves they bring them from Canada
Not necessarily. Actually, there are foods the grizzly could and would eat in California. (People forget they are omnivores.) To name a few, California hazelnut, pinyon pine, grubs (grizzlies eat bugs of all kinds) California walnut, beech nuts, members of the blueberry family, prickly pear cactus, some species of mushrooms, steelhead trout, rainbow trout, catfish, marmots, deer (will eat mule deer if it cannot find any elk) bighorn sheep, rabbits, and beaver and muskrat.
And if you are wondering, yes, they can and do eat birds if they can catch them....plus reintroducing the moose from Washington state into the northern realms will help their diet.
+shadowkitty56 you forgot to mention the most important meat of all they would love to eat..yes some of us call it human meat. But you left wingers are all right with that I bet .
@@shockadellick This is a year late, but grizzly bears are omnivores. They eat more bugs than people. There are already grizzlies in Glacier National Park. They are already in Yellowstone and I would wager they shall be in the Northern Cascades NP soon.
You accuse me of caring more about animals than people. One problem: the web of life sustains us all. Grizzlies have been absent from the ecosystem for too long and as a result the land you farm is not as rich as whatever your ancestor had. They knew NOTHING about bears spreading seed in their poo. They knew NOTHING about bear behavior or about grizzlies having those long claws to dig up grubs, which aerates soil, which increases the health and fruitfulness of the land. If you don't like being inconvenienced by the bear, too bad. All you had to do was put up a bloody electric fence and change a few methods and you would have been fine, you stubborn ox!!
Pretty soon they will be no more beautiful animals in this world 🌎.
It's a shame !!!
"That should be important to us." Indeed, it was important to the natives you killed and took the land from.
Are grizzly bears compatible with human populations? I'm not rooting for people necessarily, considering how so many of them bring the trashy products of mindless consumerism wherever they go (loud urban music and patio furniture in Yosemite camps, for example). But at the same time would it not be dangerous to come upon a grizzly bear when one was hiking alone in the higher reaches of the Sierra? Encounters with large bears in wilderness areas does not sound like a good idea.
Ask ranchers around Yellowstone?
@@concerned1313 Your answer is not really an answer. Please tell me what you are trying to say.
@@rr7firefly I think it would not be a good idea to bring non native grizzly bears or somehow re-introduce the native California Grizzly via some kind of DNA thing back to the Sierras. We already have enough animals for safety reasons to be cautious of not including 2 legged animals and the elements...So your answer is NO, do not bring grizzlies back and I agree with your statements originally!
@@concerned1313 Thanks for the clarification. I have to admit that I have a real problem with bears in general. Whenever I see films or videos of people fishing in the rapids in the same area with grizzlies feeding on the seasonal fish migration I get very uncomfortable.
@@rr7firefly Here is a recent one with some reasonable smart backpackers and they almost have big problems.

It used to be the California Grizzly kept the timid Black Bears in the high country of the Sierras. Black Bears did not even exists south of Kern County to the border until the 1930s when the Federal Government brought on the troubled bears out of Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National parks and planted them down here. I have a lot of respect for bears and don't care for them, but they are necessary.
The grizzly lived mostly along the coast lines and valleys, not up in our mountains like black bears. Reintroduction would be impossible, as much as I wish it to happen.
Also not entirely true. There are records of it in Sequoia National Park AND Yosemite. Neither are near the coast in particular. It is also possible they existed in small numbers in Joshua Tree National Park: one of their favorite foods, pinyon pine, is fairly abundant in a portion of the park.
Please reintroduce grizzly bears back to Yosemite 🙏🏽
Please reintroduce grizzly bears to la tuna canyon Park in Los Angeles county California there's a lot of asshole people there and of course that's the California grizzlies native range in those mountain range and it's very good habitat ‼️
But they will return due to one animal, Wolves. They've been enemy's in north america. I predict the'll be back in 2018-2025
You're hopeful aren't you?
I hope so
Great fill Yosemite back up with Grizzly Bears and Mountain Lions .
Bet I get a Camping spot next year , WHAT ? Oh don't worrie they'll be a spot for y'all the year after that .
I concur and am personally glad they are gone!
Bring back the Grizzly bear to california--wtf its on your flag!
I agree!
Why can’t we bring the grizzly back to Yosemite? While the California grizzly might be extinct I feel that a close cousin like the Kodiak grizzly could be a viable option to release in Yosemite. We have done the same thing with wolves in Yellowstone and seen phenomenal ecological effects that helped the environment greatly.
Then start carrying large caliber guns!
@@concerned1313 or bear spray and flares
@@Greg-tj8rg OK, pepper spray will knock down that bear every time I bet, NOT. The current spray that is legal for CA only goes 5 or 10 feet because that is what the liberals ruled on about 15 to 30 years ago. And flares here in CA with all the fires doesn't sound like a promising idea either. Definitely need to start carrying high caliber handguns.
@@concerned1313 I said bear spray not pepper spray. Stopped reading after that. Good day
@@Greg-tj8rg Dude, I looked into this years ago and right now your bear spray is illegal in this state, period. It is like having an automatic loading gun! I live in California.
4:40
Clair checking in.
If you want to close down the park bring back the Grizzlies or wolves.
The point of national parks is to protect and preserve wildlife, while also educating and serving the people. We have leaned far too heavily on the serving the people portion. These lands that are supposed to be preserved arent in their natural state. It wouldn’t shut down the park it would make the park what it was always supposed to be.
There are wolves in the park...
@@666hobart there are no wolves in Yosemite as of right now. There might have been before people took over but idk.
@@buelmore9784 How certain of this are you? Some will say the same for Lassen NF but that simply is untrue. They've been around there for a few years now and migrated from the south-southeast. And well there aren't any anti-wolf fences in Yosemite itself and wolves are in the mtns. surrounding the park so what makes you think they don't enter the park's wilderness boundaries?
@@666hobart it’s possible I guess, it’s not like Yosemite isn’t habitable but there haven’t been any seen recently and there is a good chance if there ever was they have been killed off and never returned.
Grizzlies are too volatile to be considered...Tree hugers/left wingers never stop to amaze me
If anything grizzlies are the more timid of the two species of bear found in North America. It's just that WHEN a bear/human confrontation happens the grizzly is so much stronger and nearly impossible to fight off. Grizzlies wont make a comeback in California but that's for ecological reasons. Stop with the "tree hugger/left wing" bullshit, it's got nothing to do with that. You don't know what you're talking about. Leave the considerations to people who do.
@@MrStensnask And then we can bring back the T-rex and Velociraptors. It makes perfect sense. What could possibly go wrong?
Excellent statement shockadellick, I 100% concur!
I mean they are wild animals, it is their natural habitat. I do not understand why some people think that we are entitled to destroy and kill to such an extent.
This isn’t about politics. This is about whether or not you respect nature.
I guess not .
Were there grizzly bears in yosemite in the late sixtys? That's when we were there.
No, they were killed off in the early 1900s from California.
You all failed to mentioned "Monarch". Also that the weight of these could reach over 2,000 pounds. The 10,000 of the California Grizzly Bear population is probably because of the number of cattle that they fed on during and after the Mission and Rancho Period of California that ended in the early to middle 1800s. I know this was a short video, but it is part of the bigger picture. Though it would of been awesome to see, for me and most people of general public are realistically glad they are gone.
Sad
Unfortunately the tourist industry has capitalized on Yosemite valley. It is more and more spoiled every year. Restoration efforts would be abandoned for a Starbucks coffee shop.
It's what we whites do to any native sacred land.
@@666hobart because only 'whites' go to Yosemite. Give me a break...
I would never ever drink coffee again to see this Grizzlies in california
No it would most definitely NOT be"nice" to have grizzly bears back in Yosemite, despite people's romantic notions.
*YOUR FLAG HAS A BIG, FAT GRIZZLY BEAR ON IT.* It is like having the Dodo on the flag of Mauritius, a little embarrassing. The bear needs to return.
A little sacrifice must be made to ensure its well being, but it would be worth it as California could provide an important linchpin. It could connect the would be grizzly bear populations in the Cascades with populations that could one day exist in Arizona: people forget that grizzlies are omnivorous beasts and in Arizona they are important for munching on whitebark pine and a few others that are now trapped on mountaintops and are overgrazed by ungulates like elk, bighorns, and mule deer (the same is also to an extent true of California. Let me put it this way: less deer browsing the trees=less dried out dead trees in the mountains= less kindling for forest fires. Lord knows California needs that.)
