  • Hundreds of black bears make their home in Yosemite and seeing a wild bear is often the highlight of a trip to the park. Bears often remind us of ourselves, and the complex relationship between bears and humans has changed over time as we strive to keep bears wild. When I was a kid in the 70's I remember camping in tents in Yosemite, and Yellowstone. We hear bears sniffing around 1-2AM my parents told us just stay quiet they won't bother you. We wake up in the morning see all these bear footprints around the tents we didn't worry about being injured by a bear. I don't think I would sleep in a tent again today as they say ignorance was bliss. In those days everyone had tents we didn't even know anyone who owned an RV. Later in the 70's we had a small camper my parents slept in we still slept in the tents.

    I used to live in Missouri where we didn't have bears, but then I moved to Minnesota and was intrigued to see a bear on the very first day! Since then, I've seen bears every week on the way to work except for in winter, and I began to develop a passion for them. I became a game warden for 12 years and it's amazing to be able to interact with them while helping the public. My favorite animal ever.

    The biggest problem is the belief that we humans should be able to go anywhere we want. My fantasy future has a world where certain vast sections of wilderness are cordoned off from human intrusion. And I am very hopeful, because in the not too distant future we will be just a sad footnote of history, and the world will shake us off like a dog does a flee.

    was in Yosemite about 1974 with 3 friends. we camped out in the woods, no tents just sleeping bags on the ground around a small campfire. 2 or 3 rangers rode up on horses in the middle of the night and weren't happy lol. they warned us about the bears but we insisted we would be alright, they shook their heads and rode away. stayed in a campground after the 1st night. never did see any bear but if you went to where the restrooms were there were vending machines full of snacks and the raccoons would actually sit on top of them waiting for handouts, too funny.

      So funny that the rangers tell you how dangerous it is, while they're the ones that allow for camping, without protecting from the potential threat of bears. Why not provide a safe place for campers?

Mama black bear didn't like her two cubs wandering into the mens room, and rangers had to come shew 'em away to let my fellow LHS campers, all kids, escape alive after hiding out on the stalls.

    Decades ago, I got to hear a bear tear up the camper parked directly across the camp road. A man and his daughter were sleeping in a tent, but the man left a cooler with his caught fish and some chicken in a cooler in the shell. After listening for 10-20 minutes, I dashed to my car. The noise went on for about an hour or maybe more. I slept in the car and didn't even leave when nature called, because the restrooms were in that direction.
    I saw my first bears (mama and cub) in Sequoia thirteen days ago. I got some good photos and video, because zoom lenses rule.

      Cherry Chellew Black bears are omnivoires, but they prefer plaint food. Humans are not direct source of meat to them (they to not eat humans). Polar bears- yes, they are active human-hunters... Not all bear thinks and "works" the same. There were sporadical attacks of Black Bears on humans, but there were more like mother protecting her cubs stuff... Thinking that every bear in the wild just want nothing more than eat You is just wrong and a bit stupid... They may be from the same familly, but all of them have distinctive features. Polar ones are carnivoars, so they are the most hostile towards human beings... Similar with Grizzly bears, they just have more diverse diet, so there's smaller risk... But Black Bears are different- they still can be dangerous but not that much... Spectacled Bears, for example, are only vegetarians (they occasionally hunt for farmlife but they are not said to attack human beings)

    • @ingramalastrine261
      @ingramalastrine261 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cherry Chellew I'm sorry, I didn't wanted to call You "stupid", or anything... I'm honestly sorry if You felt offended in any way- I didn't mean to sound mean, actually. I wanted to say that putting all bears in one metaphorical box is quite stupid, since they all have different "personality", and different "level" of ferocity- I didn't called YOU as stupid. I am very aware, that every bear is pottentially dangerous for human beings, but not all of them are acting that angry, to the level of attacking humans. Not all thinks the same way. This is truth, that American Black Bears do not ACTIVELY hunt humans (there's a difference between associating humans with food and actually seeing them as food) and I actually admitted in my previous comment that I'm NOT unaware of the fact that, after all, they are all wild animals and that rather automatically mean, that humans shouldn't provoke them, by inviding their terrority, ect... I just pointed out that there's a difference between calling a men-eater a creature that is generally vegetarian and can *occasionally* attack humans while feeling threaten, endangered or dusturbed AND a one, whose diet is 100% meat in natural habitant and sees humans, like, maybe once-twice a year... American Bears are generally used to human presence, so incidents like that happens at times, but they are not constantly attacking humans... And THIS IS the difference- I guess even wild dogs, or (especially) big cats are far greater threat for humans, due to their energetic/agressive behaviour. Plus, bears are more passive and attack (not be mistaken with hunt) only when they need to... By the way, I still think somehow that human is far greater danger for other human than any animal... Sorta...

    • @ingramalastrine261
      @ingramalastrine261 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cherry Chellew XD OK, just to make clear... First, I'm not a man... Second, I didn't said they DO NOT eat humans at all, I said that they are not active human-hunters, there's a difference. I understand Your point of them being dangerous and unpredictable, but... Actually EVERYTHING in nature is unpredictable...
      I didn't want to argue by the way... I just said my oppinion, which is actually supported by some facts... Nevermind, my aim was not to argue with anyone... And I guess this is what the discussion turned into...

The had left their food locker open and a raccoon was running away with a loaf of bread in it’s mouth. The video says there are bear boxes in all the campgrounds. What's the situation in the back country and semi-back country (e.g. Hetch Hetchy and the Little Yosemite)?

    • @martyspargur5281
      @martyspargur5281 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Halffastcyclist the campgrounds all have bear boxes. Some campgrounds have "dining halls" where everyone eats together. And as boy scouts we were taught to suspend our packs from high limbs, but that just doesn't work. Now people use bear-proof plastic cannisters. They are too slippery for a bar to grab, and there are no corners for a bear to rip open. So they might kick it from here to next Tuesday, but they for the most part can't break in.

      It's actually illegal now to hang food from bear bags anywhere inside the park. It has to go in one of the big steel boxes or in your own bear canister. The official Yosemite site has information about all of this.

    Maybe you are watching this because you are going to visit Yosemite (or anywhere there are black bears) in the near future. Now is the time to start getting ready. Are you wondering how to reduce the chances of waking up to find the doors ripped off your car? Well, when you stop in Oakhurst, Merced or wherever on the way up there, Don't eat the smelly fast food in your car! If you regularly eat burgers etc in your car anyway, forget it because that's like an engraved invitation to a bear to come on in. Maybe you can't smell it, but they can. So what i mean is at least a week ahead of your trip, clean the heck out of your car's interior. Use Lots of amonia, like Mr Clean Citrus. Air your car out afterward. THAT'S your best chance of keeping them out of your car. And if you happen to see wildlife on the road while enroute, Please don't stop and chase the poor critters on foot. You're chasing them down to get a picture, they're terrified. And please leave your dog safely behind. There are alot more mountain lions than you might think, and believe me they're eyeing your little dog as a mid afternoon snack. Easy pickins. So if a bear does break into your car, they will peel the door off or bust a window on one side to get in, and bust out the other side to get out. Your insurance company may just say tough luck, but for sure you will get a big fat ticket for letting it happen. Sorry if i sound condescending, that is not my intention. We are all in this together. Peace.

    That was really well done. Great job.
    However, I'll throw in my two cents as an experienced backpacker and frequent Yosemite visitor who doesn't stay in campgrounds.
    Guns are legal to carry in YNP and SEKI.
    Bear spray is not.
    That is just so remarkably backwards. And I'm sure you know why.
    I don't carry spray in YNP because it's not really necessary but I do in SEKI. I'm sure I'll never have to use it, because I know how to be around bears and understand the small threat they pose, but I'm also not going to purposefully put myself at risk. Maybe my real issue is that guns are allowed in National Parks. I'll never get that one.

NPS would prefer ALL people stay out of the park so they can do "studies, surveys and observe" the park while patrolling. Problem bear should be darted and hauled away hundreds of miles north to break the chain of being fearless of people. NPS is more of a problem than the bears. Too many city dwellers, do-gooders and tree huggers in NPS, Death or relocation is the only solution to problem bears.

      Around Thanksgiving time. Used to take my kids there for years, always saw lots of bears and coyotes just after dark, coming into campgrounds looking for food. Two solutions: Get rid of bears or people. Black bear hibernate part time in the Sierras. Expect them all winter. Had to stop going there. Too many people and too many silly NPS rules.

They said the same thing to the Indians they now say to the bears, "They are strong, fascinating to watch, and given time we can live with them on reservations!"

    K.DUBZ,youre crazy,why on earth would you want to kill these beautiful animals.id point the gun right at you and pull the trigger and i wouldnt miss i can tell you because people with your kind of thinking are not wanted or needed on this planet,why kill such a beautiful animal.bears have been misunderstood for many years,they dont want to eat you but understand this,they are very hungry and a mother bear with 3-4 or more cubs to feed have got to have the food for them or die and she knows this,thats when she will attack you as she too needs to eat and her wee cubs,humans have made thier food supply dwindle away over the years and humans have taken more and more land from them so dont blame the bear,BLAME YOURSELVES

    • @c259x
      @c259x 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been to yosemite twice and didn't see any, I think there were just too many people, but there maybe other reasons aswell. Yellowstone was the best place to see them imo. I encountered a black bear on a hike with a group of people, best bet is to keep your distance from any type of bear. Although black bears are more timmid they can be dangerous, I think they will only go for you if they think you are a guaranteed meal and they are desperate, i'm just thankful it wasn't a grizzly. Carry bear spray if you are overly concerned, make noise, travel in groups and don't run if you see one and for the love of god don't walk up to and try and take a selfie with one, yes a member of my group tried and it got a little tense.

      Cheryl Cooper unfortunately, no. Nor do rubber bullets. I am not aware of what they do now, but they used to trap them, haul them to some very remote location, and let them out of the trap, which is essentially a section of steel culvert on a trailer. After three strikes (they inevitably come right back), they are unfortunately destroyed. How does it come to this? People ignoring the few simple steps it takes to keep them from getting people food in the first place. While it's pretty adorable to watch them devour your dinner after they chased you away from the table, you are signing their death warrant. Don't be a pushover, Resist! What bears you may say, i dont see any bears. Well, look up, there's probably one high in the tree next to your picnic table, and they know just when to drop in! Thank You for reading this, and Thank You for caring about Yosemite's bears, the odds of them reaching age 5 are pretty low when they interact with people.

    Outlawing bear spray in California's National Parks just teaches bears that humans are defenseless, and thereby encourages human-bear interaction, which is exactly the worst thing that we could do to bears and humans.
    Humans should have a right to defend themselves in a non-lethal way...and a bear that gets too close to people and gets bear sprayed is a bear that will never have to be relocated or euthanized for becoming too comfortable around people.
    Lassen National Park is already closing down areas for overnight backpacking because bears are becoming too comfortable around people in those areas.
    In a perfect world, all backpackers would handle their food 100% perfectly at all times, but in the real world that just doesn't happen, and so instead of allowing people to carry bear spray, they shut down that area of the park. This teaches the bear absolutely nothing for next year.
