thanks for the review ben, totally agree about the toecap turning up and the tongue being so thin makes the shoe look incredibly studpid when worn. it also fits kinda weird due to that. still haven't decided if i keep my pair. they have been sitting in a box for two months now after i wore them twice. i tried to bump up the tongue with an old padded tongue to give the shoe more structure, but it still doesn't feel right. i wonder who weartested these at adidas. the front and lace section particularly basically all crimps and crumples in all the most unappealing ways that regular superstars don't despite a similar panelcut. i still think the look down factor and ill fit kill them for me, even though i agree that the out- and insole are pretty comfortable.
I have a bit of buyer's remorse buying the pair. Given that I have wide and flat Fred Flintstone feet, the shell toe just didn't feel comfortable when I put them on. Lack of foot maneuverability. Just like you, they've been sitting in the box since I last tried them on. I bought a couple pairs of adidas Tyshawn's (suede) and they seem to be the perfect fit for my feet, though I haven't skated them yet. I'm lucky to have an extra pair of Suciu ADV (v1's) and they are absolute tanks, and I just throw the nike lunarlon insole on them. The board feel is definitely a compromise but it's not that big of an issue.
I put mine in the microwave for a minute, then took the paper that was stuffed in the shoes when I bought them and pressed all the paper firmly into the inside of the shell toe so it reshaped it. Problem solved.
I was HEAVILY into shell toes in the 90s, loved them. When I started skating again I was in vulcs and while they hurt my feet I can’t seem to ride cupsole anymore because I feel like the board shifts more under my feet. I slammed just ollieing a hip in a pair of Es Accel OGs and am just sticking with vans and lakais now, as much as I want a pair of superstars.
A million times yes, I've noticed the same 'soggy' feeling when I switch between Vans & Adidas shoes, I'm convinced its the major difference in how grippy the soles are.
I credit you and Roman (Prodigal Suns) for my resurgence as a skater. 20+ years of being a pedestrian has ended thanks in large part to you! Thanks for all the tutorials and product reviews!
As a beginner (at the age of 35) who started with your typical shoes (vans oldskool, janoskis) the part from 8:45 helped me so much. I got them and was so confused about why I bail all the time doing tricks I thought I had on lock. I was about to give them away, but now I'm excited to break them in and see if I might be a cupsole guy. Thanks Ben.
I had the opposite happen. My Vans Sk8-hi Pros were starting to lose life, so I changed shoes. Cupsole shoes and that completely changed my flick in a positive way. Also feels more secure and safe in being more stiff and such. I think I will stick with true cupsole shoes for now, as it's a benefit for a beginner still learning the basic tricks.
Stylewise is unbeatable! Superstar really took place in nineties, especially rocking those with blank white tee and baggy washed jeans! I used to wear regular ss back in the days and never went wrong
Shoes and trucks are the two most important components to a skateboarder. I seem to be able to flip 95% of my tricks with most board sizes and concaves, since I grew up on a 7.6. But sometimes when I switch shoes I look silly trying tricks that are usually lock for me. I like to skate different shoes on different days and cycle 2-3 at a time. I definitely know what you're saying about how changing shoes can change the deck.
I mean around these parts we have a rule: absolutely never old board new shoes. Each session after the first one or two becomes exponentially more of a psychotic move to use new shoes. Especially cup soles.
The lace breakage is also problem with Campus Adv. Hate how to shoe looks and feels so sloppy when the laces are gone and the laces are gone after every session.
I have noticed these shoes on a lot of clips they look great. I think Kareem rocked them pretty hard back when they weren’t skate specific the toe cap must have been gnarly lol. Nice nollie front crook and was that pressure flip I saw? I still can’t get past my love of old huge shoes haha foot armour I call them. Man the grooves on those trucks are epic haha gotta be near the axle soon. My boards came the other day I’m gonna put a quick thank you post on the old lady’s Instagram soon. Can’t skate them yet cause it snowed here today!!! Wtf!! Anyway great review I have been seeing adidas around a lot they look great
Dude Ben, great to see you!! Feels like ages since I would watch these skate vids daily and fantasize about spring coming and progressing at skating 🔥 Now spring is here, and I'm not skating 🤷🏾♂️ Not motivated to skate alone... I'm 42 it hurts to fail... I think I might be throwing in the towel. I got a one-wheel hoverboard and have put over three hundred miles in three weeks. I'm addicted. I highly recommend if you're on the fence. They are a blast to ride, take a beating, and can almost replace a car in ways 👌🏽. I'll always appreciate all support skateboarding... I just don't think pushing wood is for this bag of bones anymore ✌🏽
My gosh, Ben!!! My right ankle is injuried and i cannot skate well. Watching you skate just makes me want to go skating and wind up hurting my ankle more. Your skating is going crazy!!!!!
I got the thrasher collab ones, loving them after breaking them in. I keep looking but they aren't really making any other colour ways at the moment. Would love to see a black with white toe
these seem like a pretty dope shoe for the longevity, dunno if i could deal with the bulkyness and lack of boardfeel to start with tho. maybe i should man up and stop being a baby! haha. I hate trying to find new shoes ;( im tight and only wanna spend less than 40 on a pair of shoes which makes finding some VERY difficult haha. Loved the video as per usual ben!
I've always skated janoski and vans type shoes and then bought the dc legacy og's, it's so weird first but after a day it became so much fun and I really got confident. You should really try something bulky. (sorry for my english)
Bro if you have any doubts, don’t have them. These are the best but get the regular super stars. Don’t listen to the haters. I’ll never go back to vans , I do occasionally wear Nike GT low pros.
Keep up the amazing work! Literally the third video I found, but holy cow your vids are awesome Ben! Please don’t stop posting :D making me want to skate!
I'd just shoegoo the first lacehole on the outside of the shoe after i laced it up correctly the first time. good to know. thanks for an awesome review, again :)
Been watching your vids for time, I’m sorry I didn’t subscribe till now, TH-cam just told me to do I did. Enjoy the vids, love to see a clear og skate as good as you do
I always wanted the white upper with black sole/toe version of these made famous by Mr Joey Bast and the Planet Earth squad. I think there was a gum version that was hella swanky too.
Hi Ben, just expecting for Ben's new vid issue! Did not watch already but whatever just want to say thank you for your effort in producing so good containt, once more!
I have the Superstar ADV Vulc with the "grippy" insoles which I made a video about on my channel. The insoles are grippy and they do grab your socks when you put them on but I get over that by loosening the laces right off when I put them on and actually once I do have them on the grip is great. The insoles are the best thing about the shoes they are amazing for heel impact and feel better than footprint insoles to me. And you are right they do last really well. I bought them for the toe protection when kneesliding from bails on transition and they are awesome for that, I highly recommend them.
the vulc version had great durability on the sole too. i used to swap out the insole & they had great boardfeel but i had a hard time finding a compatible insole because the sole was only a few millimeters thick. i dont know how they made the rubber so grippy & durable. best rubber formula ive tried. but then i decided to support vans over adidas. i wish vans would steal their rubbber formula hahaha. i still have a pair of the DGK superstars... the gold stripes are so sick
I'm going to use that as a ploy for new gear. "Hey babe, I know I said I don't need any new skate stuff, but I just started wearing these new shoes.....turns out I need some new trucks".
The ADV stands for "advanced" and it means that the shoe is upgraded for better performance on skateboard. I purchased Superstars ADVs and beside thinner tongue and some extra doubled stitches I also discovered the main difference which I wouldn't describe as an upgrade. I'm talking about the midsole, in classic superstars there is a nice foam making a shoe super comfy meanwhile in ADVs I found plastic square grid which I find very cheap looking and less durable. I wonder why they replaced the foam, the argument might be less weight but I don't think there's a big difference. There also can be more versions of classics and ADVs, maybe it depends when the shoe was made. What do you think?
i have the white ones, they are the best shoes i’ve ever skated because they are so durable and the sole is zo amazing thick, it does feel a little bit weird at the start but after 1 session i could skate them perfectly fine. they are a little bit snug but you won’t really notice it.
I never skated in these in the 90s because of the toe cap but I always loved how they looked. I wonder if the rubber they use for the sole in these is the same as the Adidas City Cup shoes. The City Cups remind me of the Koston 1s because of the thickness of the heal and toe but the thinness of the mid section/arch area. Seem, like a decent balance between a cup sole and a vulcanized shoe.
Before Ben I had no idea there was even 2 types of skate shoes with this vulcanized vs cupsole battle 😂 I always just skated whatever. I can say I like something with a stiffer sole because Im not much of a fan of my Vans Sk8 his I'm rocking now. Ive had countless superstars over the years and always liked them. Not sure losing the puffy tongues with the ADVs is worth the trade for the extra stitching tho? 🤔what say you?
i would love to see you do a Boardycakes wheel review. they're a smaller company specializing in small wheels Spencer Nuzzi of The Ride Channel is sponsored by them though
I had noticed a fair amount of skateboarding in those bad boys. I've wanted to skate a pair since I started way back in 2000 2001. Now I'll have a pair.
Filibustering another video! Ben that was so damn funny. It slipped under the radar for a sec before it registered. If you’ve been watching for awhile, that’s the trademark ending of Bens videos. Don’t know why but I’m still laughing. Great content as always. I’m a huge adidas fan but find I bust a lot of laces with them. My Janowskis are holding up much better than anticipated though.
I remember when the superstar was a mid top with a strap, those were the best footlocker shoe for 49$. Now they don’t make them. Since Adidas when full skate mode with the Busenitz
Hey Ben, love the videos! I'd love to hear your take on some insole brands. I personally use FP insoles (elites usually) and they work amazing for me. I think you'd have a lot to breakdown with them!
@@vimos.9996 dunks have a really good flick to them and last real long too. It sucks that a "corporate" brand makes the best skate shoe but its true, dunks really are that good. Jordan 1s are pretty much a slimmed down version of the dunk and skate crazy good if you really dont like chunky shoes.
I love supporting skate brands and all, but when any company makes a shoe I like better then I’m gonna get it🤷🏻♂️. I’m not gonna feel sorry for spending money I earned just cuz some kids at the skatepark can give me shit over shoes of all things. 🙄
If you like the Adidas Classic Style with a Vulc Sole i recommend the Adidas Busenitz Vulc 2 . I had one pair of them and it surprisingly lasts for 4 Months last summer what‘s insane for a vulc shoe.
Also the insole on the superstar Vulc adv was my favorite because I could ride those shoes stock and not throw footprint insoles in them like I do to all my other shoes
Hi Ben i saw the ( Globe Encore 2 in Black ) today they look a wee bit like the superstar with side stripes and look good on people footage. But look a little bit old school bulky but not so bulky as well they look stylish when i think of Globe i think of Gershon Mosley from the 90's. Your footage with the superstar shoes was amazing though it changed your style a bit and looked amazing and the shoes looked great in the footage as well.
Switched from an 5-6 month old pair of Emerica Wino G6's to the Etnies Michellin Marana lately and it was a terrible decision at first but now I feel like it was a good decison to switch from an vulc shoe to an cupsole. And I think that I should switch my shoes etc. more often because my skating has improved so much faster
I don't think adidas do the pure rubber insoles anymore. Shoes which have a rubber insole now have a fabric top layer, I love the adidas busenitz for this. I have an old pair (around 2015) of adidas suciu which had just the blue rubber insole and I agree with you, it was a bit awkward and made my feet really sweat.
I have skated Vans Elijah Berle pros until I bought the green adidas Tyshawn pro model. And there is quite a difference in feel for both shoes. I just figured it had to do with me always skating Vans. 🤷🏻♂️
Definitely have had issues with shoe changes. I have found myself bring two pairs of shoes alongside two set ups to make sure my 40 mile journey to the city isn't in vain.
thanks for the review ben,

100% agree. The only redeeming factor is they still look great on film.

And I think that I should switch my shoes etc. more often because my skating has improved so much faster
Wholesome ending
I don't think adidas do the pure rubber insoles anymore. Shoes which have a rubber insole now have a fabric top layer, I love the adidas busenitz for this. I have an old pair (around 2015) of adidas suciu which had just the blue rubber insole and I agree with you, it was a bit awkward and made my feet really sweat.
Etnies Marana please please please. I think you will love them, a sturdy cupsole with board feel
Can you review a polar deck
the spots looks so fun !
They look so cool. I plan on getting them, just don’t when
The ADV isn't necessarily the Vulc variation but more so to show it's "advanced tech" similar to the difference between a vans classic vs a vans pro.
👍 thank you
I have skated Vans Elijah Berle pros until I bought the green adidas Tyshawn pro model. And there is quite a difference in feel for both shoes. I just figured it had to do with me always skating Vans. 🤷🏻♂️
Nice review! Do a review of the Etnies Marana !
YES, when i first got a pair, I could not do any tricks on my board for the first days
I got used to it tho!
I am on my tenth pair or so. Very comfy and durable too!
Definitely have had issues with shoe changes.
I have found myself bring two pairs of shoes alongside two set ups to make sure my 40 mile journey to the city isn't in vain.
great video :)) ill go skate since things ARE awesome here
