Owning pet doves.

  • Our experience owning pet doves, Pickle and Peanut. Peanut is a male white ringneck dove, and Peanut is a female wild pied ringneck dove. We are slightly obsessed with these feathered angels, and they’re the perfect pets for our family. They’re both less than a year old, and with an average life span of 12-15 years, we look forward to many years with them. We purchased Pickle from a local pet store and Peanut from strombergschickens.com. I’m not a dove expert, but would be happy answer questions about my experience with dove husbandry.

Doves and pigeons have always been so pretty to me. I love their temperament too. I've always wanted a bird but didn't want to deal with the noise. I always found it neat that rock pigeons were the first domesticated bird too, over 5000 years ago!

@@iamkyleclimer there's debate over whether rock doves or chickens were domesticated first. Ringneck doves were domesticated much later than rock doves though, which is what we colloquially refer to as pigeons most of the time. Scientifically pigeon and dove refer to the same group.

Not all are this fortunate! Kudos to you! Beautiful doves! Very inspirational video! Most if not, all birds poop frequently bc of their quick metabolism. (And what? Humans don't?) Big deal reg. cleaning up hard wood floors after them! Way easier than dogs! Don't have to walk them in the middle of freezing winter!!!! Great spot for play stand! Much love!!!!!!

They are lovely and so is your home. I like that corner with big windows facing the backyard. You are blessed to not be doing apartment living. All live ones poop. I guess if one wants a bird that doesn't poop, it's going to be taxidermy specimen. Every 7 minutes is high pooping frequency. Lucky for us, we are 1 to 3 times a day though never enjoyable. If I could invent one thing, it'd be a toilet that sucks the air out from the rim immediately after it runs water into the bowl.

3:12 Give her strips of paper, or break uncooked spaghetti and give them to her. Poor girl is stressed when she is having an egg. Also carry the water to her, she will drink it from your hand. I've had mine for years.
I stopped feeding mine that brand you mentioned. She likes regular seeds MIXED with pellets. Safflower seeds are her favorite, and she goes crazy for bird peanuts (ZERO salt, and always break them in small pieces for them) and they LOVE tiny pieces of CHEDDAR cheese. As treats only as it's high in fat like peanuts, but high in protein and calcium.

Back in the 90's, I use to raise and breed diamond doves which are the smallest doves in the world. I've had white doves too but never tried to breed them so I'm not as familiar with them. However, it has always been my understanding that only the male coos because only the males of the diamond doves do. Correct me if I'm wrong but you stated that the white one was male and the pied one was female, yet in video the pied one was cooing. So now I'm confused. My white doves that I had never cooed so I assumed that meant they were female. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Not really. They have it awesome this way or the other, in nature…. Yeah, not so much. Keyword: birds of prey.
so what would be the alternative, if you want male and female? 2-5 times around 2 hatchlings a year? what do you do with them? euthanize them? Worse option than just crushing or eating the (yet inanimate) eggs. sell (yeah, that isn’t that easy) all hatchlings every time? Still a mess, because they have to be raised (who buys a couple day old dove hatchlings?), also selling in general really isn’t trivial… so in the end it’s just more and more doves - which is exactly what we want to avoid.
You put fake eggs back (which is important, otherwise they get stressed out and lay more and more to counteract the stealing), they are fine, if the hatching “doesn’t work” they’re also fine.

@@TomJacobW Thats good for you and not good for others. I think its tragic to have pet birds. Their meant to be free and fly high in the sky. Birds of prey will get some, its not a pretty sight to see a Crow snatch a baby Dove from a nest, but they will at least be free to roam. You wouldnt understand unless some other apex predator took you and made you a pet. Buy buy freedom and the strength to survive.

Hey just saying petting doves on the back makes the bird think it’s mating so just don’t do that.

Only parrots think that, not doves.
