Also, I will add that pigeons aren’t immediately tame if they’ve never been handled before. Idk if I’m stupid or what but I assumed mine would be tame. He is now as I’ve worked with him and I found that they’re much easier to tame than a budgie in the same situation.
That is also highly dependent on the breed too. Some are way more chill. But like frill back. Forget it. I could get those toneat out of my hand if I had handled them since early after hatch. Never anything like grab them up and put them on my shoulder ya know. No way.
Yeah I got a 1 yr old pigeon from a breeder, and she was in a not so good situation. Never been handled her whole life. She was so terrified of me the first couple days, she just hid in a corner and refused to eat or drink for 2 days straight. I’ve had her for 6 months now and she’s not scared anymore, just mean. Shes been making small improvements but I don’t know if I’ll ever fully get her to be a shoulder bird like I wanted.
But compared to that, i got a tame 3 month old pigeon and Ive had him for 4 days. He’s so sweet and sits on my head, knees and shoulders. Or he’ll lay for hours next to me on my bed. He’ll also eat from my hand and shows absolutely no aggression. In 4 days he’s made more steps than my other bird has in a half a year!
@@shrimp3981 Hopefully she'll come around! and I hope having a second bird will help her as well since she can see him and know it's okay, but at least she's making steps if you continue with having patience
No animal is really tame. They're all afraid of us most of the times. It's gonna definitely take time and effort to build a bond.
Budgies are stupid even if you give your whole damn life for them they will bite you away for their partners anyways

I have a pet pigeon. I rescued him from the ranch where I used to keep my horse. He was an abandoned fledgling with an injured wing. Nursed him back to health and wanted to release him, but he became really tame. He does have a very feisty attitude and tries to breed anything that somewhat resembles a bird. His favorite is pipe insulation 🤨. We love though, I even crate trained him. I move him from a night time cage in our temperature controlled shop to his outside aviary.
I also found a baby pigeon with an injured wing when I was younger, and... All the horrible adults decided I couldn't look after him and took him to the vet where they took him and I never saw him again :(

I am currently in a situation where a pigeon with a broken wing is in my backyard, I feed it, but do not know how to care for it, my parents do not have the money for taking it to the vet, and we are moving soon, plus we cannot take the bird with us, and I have gotten so attached even if it has not been named yet, I do not know what to do, we are leaving sooner than it can recover, if it does recover, my dad will actually stay behind to care for it, but I will miss it so much :(

@@adeleyinfeifei exactly why I never took mine to a vet. A really great lady that reached out to me from a pigeon forum, advised me. She had never seen a pigeon so badly scalped that made it. He has one eye and an injured wing but still managed to pop-up and fly a few circles over my home…they are very resilient.
There are some good resources on FB. I can’t remember the name of the pigeon forum I was on initially, but sometimes you get lucky and find a really person that guides you through all of it. For me, I lost my job and was able to take care of these guys who needed round-the-clock care.
As a pigeon owner, this is 100% spot on! Mine is like 4x the size of the sweet baby in your hands and holy COW. I bought two air purifiers and hand vacuums just to attempt to keep up with the mess. It’s all worth it though! Pigeons snuggles are the best. So good to see another pigeon lover out there! 😊
do pigeons really need to be in a pair?
@@shreklover3458 dépend on you. Single pigeons are so much attached to the owner. Pairs don't really interested in human though
I can’t advocate for air purifiers enough! They should be a must to anyone who has a pet, any pet, but even if you don’t have a pet.. you should get one, or more. I have 4 in my house.. but I also have a house full of pets (3 dogs, 7 ferrets, and 2 gliders). But the air purifiers are wonderful to help with allergens, dust, and just help with keeping your indoor air clean.
I have the one that has built in UV sanitation, so it actually sanitizes the air with UV rays along with filtering it through a HEPA filter.
They’re not that expensive.. and last for a long time. Get one!

Yeah, please don't get a pigeon expecting a guarantee that it's going to love you immediately. I rescued a pigeon from the streets and she's been extremely aggressive towards me unprovoked, my vet described her as being "like a pit bull". Just like every other animals some have a tendency to be sweet and others are gonna be more aggressive. So be prepared to love and care for a pigeon regardless of their attitude before you get one!!! And don't worry my pidge is happy, and healthy, she just happens to be a cranky baby.

Feral animals are always harder to tame, just like picking up a cat that has lived in the streets all its life is harder than getting one that is used to humans treating it kindly

For people who don't believe pigeons have their own personality, I've had 7 and they all were completely different. Cinnamon was the sweetheart, Spice was also sweet, but picked fights. Dodo was a chunky butt who ate everything, Peep was sweet, but a total bratt and attention hog. Oreo was a scaredy cat that bites, and Grey Grey was the smartest of them all and super cuddly. Also a total lady's man and has one chick and gf, Sophie, a feral. Piper, my newest, is super clingy and sweet hates being held like a potato.

Omg, they certainly do, just like all living things. My one male LOVES Canadian Peas and I was told by my feed supplier that they don’t usually like them as they are bitter. I have to still hand-feed him them to him and I can tell when he wants them by the sounds he makes. He’s so spoiled. The other male, is a bit challenging but I think he has major PTSD as he was extremely injured when I found him as a baby. He always to get into the others cage and when he does the other one goes wild. They’re both extremely curious. It’s a trip. I never thought I’d have these guys but they rescued me as much as I them.🥰
Avian Behaviourist 2cents worth:-
DUST:
1 HEPA Filta PER MEDIUM SIZE BIRD in the bird areas . 98% of bird keepers don't have enough running in the house!
Shower them more regularly to lessen the dust. 2 - 3 times a week. Take them in with you helps, 'flock' bathing together is good for them mentally, do them first, then sit them up on the shower rail to drip!
Suction cup shower perches are brilliant, or sprinklers outside in summer on a suitable perch.
Not just providing a bathing bowl 24/7 assuming you have been. If you havent been, start with that first. Add that, and clean it regularly once or twice daily as required. Those terracotta plant pot base things are fantastically good, grippy and suitable, can be set up surrounded by old towels to catch the splash down. Putting it in the centre of the room on a sturdy small table is good, I use a strong plastic camp table. Lacking a terracotta plant base, a lasanga dish or big wide casserole dish is sometimes good, but dont fill it too much past their knees first time if it's a slippery dish. See how they go.
HOW TO DE-EGG:
(You can boil her own eggs and give them back to her if you cant get fakes).
They tend to know they are fakes, but the feel of them under the breast feathers still triggers the right hormones. You can try starting taking them away 1 at a time each day or so after 21 days cycle sitting without causing mental damage, but do it at night. Sometimes the hen bird will 'reset' after no babies appear.
When you take the last egg away, make sure the next morning you have:
• lots of distractions ready,
• new different green feeds,
• hanging a spinach or similar from cotton string to jump and peck,
• meal worms,
• treats,
• bring in brighter lights,
• less nesty spots available,
All things designed to get your broody girl busy and not thinking that her last egg dissappeared in the night. She will be on a hormone downer because of nothing the right shape touching her breast and undercarriage, but it is healthier for her to rejoin the flock than to sit indefinitely losing weight on the nest, but it will take effort from you to distract her from going back into a laying cycle.
Don't let her sit and be depressed - that will just brew another egg. Keep her active. Move things around, take her for a walk, teach her something new using high value treats, deploy cage treats they have to work for, you get the idea.
MEALS:
Don't forget to add liquid Vitamin D to their drinking water, carefully measure the solution, don't poison them by accident OR give them too little.
And I hope you are giving them a wide ranging diet, not seed alone.
Since they are house birds they need it even more, showers, diet, vitamin D supplement.

I've become a sudden mom to 3 pigeons literally 2 weeks ago and the amount of down that surrounds their cage is...incomprehensible. One of them even started laying eggs.

I rescued a baby pigeon and the mess goes down DRASTICALLY if you use a majority or entirely mesh and fabric enclosure instead of just a metal one. All the mess is contained and you can throw it in the washing machine once or twice a week without detergent and it's clean and dry fast. I'm upgrading him to a large mesh dog crate next week because he's outgrowing the fabric carrier I've been using as a surrogate nest box for him and it gives him more space to practice flying since he's not able to to that yet.

People could consider volunteering at a bird nursery in a wildlife sanctuary and specifically ask to help raise the pigeons.
Hand raised pigeons are going to be a lot easier to tame. Granted, the “burrito” method of wrapping adult birds and holding them while petting works too, just make sure not to wrap them tight because they have air sacks.
I would love to volunteer at such a place, but I'm not sure that any exist near me. This place doesn't have a whole lot of pigeons, though I usually see them waddling under overpasses or huddled on streetlamps.
Why would you wrap a bird up? That sounds really cruel. If you spend enough time with birds just being gentle and reassuring, they will grow to trust you. I would escape ASAP from anyone who tried to wrap me up to "pet" me: wouldn't you?
Birds are supposed to be free. If the bird grows to trust you, love you, they will always return to you. If you try to force them to engage with you, they're way more likely to escape. A bit like human relationships. A person who wants to wrap a bird's wings closed shouldn't have a bird. The only reason to do so would be for giving medical treatment.
Bird sanctuary near me won't let you adopt until you volunteer. Kinda great

As a companion breeder I can definitely agree with this stuff. It can also be noted that hand-raised cocks can often have aggression problems, not all birds are like that, but there’s definitely enough for it to be acknowledged as a risk and to know if you are wanting to get a pigeon. Another note is that pigeons have a hard time breathing when on their back! (Their lungs are near their back so pressure on it makes it hard to breathe) ^^ they are extremely fun birds though and it’s always nice to go wrestle with the boys or have my inquisitive hen yank my pant leg while cleaning

A lot of this applies to all birds. I use to have a cockatiel for 18 years and they have a ton of these same issues too. Still loved him so much and had no issues!

I am helping a neighbor feeding their pigeons and stumbled into your website. Thank you for being so honest about the pros and cons about keeping a pigeon pet so that a person can make an informative and responsible decision to whether he is suitable to care for one instead of later discarding their pets once something more serious crops up. I am a pet owner of cats and know the challenges a new pet owner as I have been through one.
DAS A UNIT
For the past year I've been feeding a white pigeon that had a nest on the side of my roof. She would always land on my car when I would come home from work and coo at me, and when I would work in the garden she would flap down to hang out. I started calling her Duchess because of how elegant she looks with her posture and white feathers (plus she has a tendency to be a diva & peck the other birds away so she can use the bird bath alone 😂).
When this winter rolled around, I started to notice how much she would struggle on stormy nights - battered by the wind and rained on. All she could do was perch on the side and try and stay upright.
So I went out and bought her a brand new homemade aviary made out of ceder wood which was empty, built ramps and platforms for her with a "penthouse" built into the ceiling. She has only been in it 4 days, and as a wild pigeon you can imagine how she reacted to being caged at first & it broke my heart. But now I go outside to feed her and she coo's at me & she isn't as nervous because she is more settled in.
I've been texting with a professional who owns hundreds of different species of birds, and she wants me to bring Duchess to her to determine what breed she is so we can choose a suitable mate, because she has flown solo up until this point so I think she needs some socialization with other pigeons. Spring is just starting, so I'm hoping to extend the family!
After she has been in the aviary for a month I'm definitely going to let her out, because she has known the wild most of her life it wouldn't be right to take that freedom from her, and thankfully I don't have any predators in my area. I've never even thought to bring her inside, although she spent 1 night in my laundry in a carrier. Whenever I get too close or try and grab her she resists & gets nervous, so I guess its just going to take time for us to build that bond under these new circumstances.
She has laid one egg since she has been in the aviary, and I just removed it while I was cleaning it & Duchess was in the carrier - that won't have any serious negative effects will it?

But now I have moved her inside and she lives in my living room! 😁
She lives in the cabinet at the bottom of my TV unit, at night I close the doors and hang a curtain over the glass so she can sleep soundly. I let her out in the mornings and she follows me to the back door, and she goes out to poop then comes straight back inside.
I love having her inside, and now that Autumn is here and its getting cold she just hangs out & nests in her cabinet all day

I've had parrots for 35 plus years. My first rescue pigeon came to me just under 5 years ago. I've built an aviary and shelter for what is now a Flock of 24 rescue/adopted pigeons. I love my parrots but I often wonder if I'd started with a pigeon, would I even have got 'into' parrots at all. I love all birds but the pigeons are quite special and not as 'demanding' as a Cockatoo, CAG or Amazon. Wonderful pet birds that are even suitable for Apartment or Condo Living...which the larger parrots are not. They are not destructive, like parrots with that hook bill. Thank you for promoting pigeons as pets.....there are so many Domestics needing a good home.

I found a pigeon that was injured and brought her in home and nursed her back to health and with time she was so sweet and lovable and came to me when i called her and followed me around. After about a year and half i found out she was egg bound and just passed away a week ago and i am so heartbroken i can barely get out of bed or function so that is a real thing and i don’t know if i want to deal with that possibility from another female! i loved her so much and miss her so much!
So sorry to hear about that. I have a female pigeon and it really scares me to think that she might egg bound one day. Really hope mine will stay healthy.

I love that you talked about the taking them outside. I live right next to an empty grain silo. We get a LOT of birds of prey. Vultures, hawks, falcons, etc. I just got a cockatiel and I wanted to take him outside in a harness, but realized it would probably be incredibly risky to take him outside anywhere near my home.

I found mine out on the street (same bird as my profile pic) and Squabble is a sweetheart, I can't hold Squabble the same way you hold Cooper (yet), but Squabble lets me lift him/her up, eats out of my hands, and enjoys having beak holds and scritches. I have looked after injured racers and sick pigeons before, but never really had one for long term before now as a pet. It is because of Squabble that I came across your videos!

Good video. My King pigeon just turned 5. I've had her almost 5 years. Jimmy laid eyes 2 months after I got her. She rides on my Harley and flys back to the shop when she is tried of riding. She lives at the shop with is a furniture restoration shop. She interacts with my son when I'm gone and one of of the other guys. She is always pestering me and now that I've introduced her to pigeons on TH-cam she really bothers me when I'm at my desk till I put on video. I took a little video of her listening to you talk about how smart pigeons are and it's little funny, her expressions with you in the background talking and you bird in your shirt. Thanks
How do you put pigeon pants on? Your pigeon is so docile!
Pigeon are very frail animals. Theyre not hard to hold down so for my pigeon whos still not very comfortable with being held and hates his poop pants what i do is i make sure i hold him against my body gently, and then i loop the shoulder straps around his head first. After that i bring the poop pants down against his stomach and grab one strap and pick up a wing gently and move it to his back and do the same for the other side and connect the velcros. Once the diaper aspect is on and secured to his back and whole body ill bring the should straps down to the velcro peices on the back to secure the whole thing. I hope that wasnt confusing. I feel its be easier to visually explain lol

Thanks for pointing out the dust! I do have asthma, and while it is not intense, I have no issues with it for most of the year, it is safe to assume constant bird dust would affect it. Too bad, pigeons are so cute!

So my pigeons have a coop outside and I don't interact with them constantly, however they still come back to me when I let them out to stretch their wings. At least the ones who know how to fly come back. The three squabs I have don't quite know everything that my adult birds know, but I have been able to handle them a lot to hopefully get them used to being handled. It's been very fun having the squabs because I can work them a little more that what the adults will let me do.

I absolutely love pigeons theyre so sweet and beautiful. I'd have the hardest time though, I have cats and im sure one would be fine with pigeons but the other is a badass hunter and has brought me the most impossible birds to catch that I have to take away. He's naughty.
Pidgeons don't always come back home. Many a folk have lost a very valuable pidgeon when it got out.
Maybe because they should be kept in a way that doesn't put them at risk of escaping and dying somewhere out there.

I love pigeons mine are all rescues plus I feed about 200 outside my house but the Hawk must go. I got a pellet sling and it didn't affect him at all. I think I need to get some fake crows or something.

My friend just gave me 3 homing pigeon eggs, which I find so crazy as I never had birds before nor thought of having some! So this video was very helpful!
I live in a condo and have a large outside balcony, so i was planning on having them as an outside bird, in which they can come inside every now and then. I wonder when they grow up, if i can take them around town as they are homing birds so they will know how to get home? Thankfully, where I live, there is no predators. As I live on a highrise. Plus, there are no predator birds.
Ive had my pigeon since November! Now I see why my livingroom gets sooo dusty. I will definitely look into an air purifier thank you. Does your pigeon like its poop pants? Mine hates it. For a while he had no interest in leaving his cage and my bf wanted me to release my pigeon since he was a homing pigeon so he thought he was wild (and ive explained many time he simply would not survive in the wild), so we made a bet that my pigeon loves his cage and wont leave so we opened our door and opened his cage and an hour went by and my pigeon didnt care to even get out the cage which i knew was going to happen. Now hes getting more curious about being out but spends a lot of time pecking at his pants. I tried to adjust them to be more comfortable for his but he just hates having them on but i want him to be able to enjoy being out of the cage more often. Any suggestions?

I have a pet pigeon and I feed her a pigeon seed mix! The Kaytee Pigeon and dove mix is pretty good but you can get 50lbs bags of mix from chewy that I actually prefer because they last a lot longer and have more peas in them which my pidge really enjoys :) you also need to make sure you’re supplying them with grit since that helps the digest food
Plus a really good treat for them is safflower seeds!

Do pigeons have similar temperament to chickens? I have a budgie and I love her a lot, but I’d prefer a house pet more like my chickens. Chill, friendly, easily tamed, and friendly with the other birds. I’m not planning on getting any more pets any time soon, so I’m just wondering if I would like a pet dove.

Just rescued a racing pigeon. I found it's owner, he took his damn time getting back to me. He was in another state and wouldn't come until three days later. The bird died and he had the nerve to ask me to burry it.
Cool video I raise pigeons and currently have 2 to 300 pigeons I fly them, competition and shows
my relative raised racing pigeons and they were great pets to him. they were kept outside in a roost in Canada. they would fly above the house in circles and would forage to supplement their provided diet. they were not protected from predators though. mostly their numbers kept predators away but he also kept a dog in the yard to keep cats away and such. he would sit on the deck and coo at them and his favorites would come sit with him and nibble food.

The downsides aren't that bad imo. Looking forward to watching the video about the good side

I got a pet Dove just a few days ago. someone was selling a dove that needed a home and I could not help myself. so I'm now learning as I go XD but I just couldn't let her go homeless since idk what the lady would have done with her since she needed her gone/sold.
HI Tyler, I just found a pigeon on my backyard. It seems like it’s hurt maybe? Not sure what to do? I watched some videos on how to take care of a pigeon. I got a box and put towels and water and oatmeal for now. I tried to give him water with a spoon but he didn’t drink it. I’m stressing, picked him up and didn’t see any wounds.

I use to be homeless up untill january this year. I use to sit out side home bargains begging everyday. everyday fgor 12 moth a brown pigeon would come sit with me everyday and share food i got of customers. She once came with an broken egg stuck to her bottom, so i caught her and removed the shell. I am now in recovery and live in a lovely home. but that little pigeon got me through the covid lockdown and she was so inelligent, Just after 2 weeks i saw her in the main city of Wakefield, I saw a pigeon the same color as my pal, so i shouted and to my amazment, it was my pal. she flew out of the pack and wobbled running straight towards me lol xx
Just picked up a Egyptian pigeon it’s huge only 2 months . I go to my breeders and can get meds for them
What about the hillnesses the can get from other pidgeons? Here where i live there is no veterinarian in kms... and i also don't want to get the eventual pidgeon and my family sick but I wanted still to give him some freedom (luckily also no predators :D)

Well you know I think in most places because the arctic's you're going to have Birds of Prey. I mean there's el-zour talks there's eagles-bears vultures there's peregrine falcons I mean there's all kind of birds of prey. Just about wherever you go.

I’ll stick to seeds for a start. So far, my Nutella has always been on seeds and I’ve not tried pellets. She’s doing mighty fine though I might try pellets one day.

If I ever get a pet, I think I'd get one of these fluffy cuties, I even got the names picked out, if male its name will be Booker, if female it'll be named Hilda. as much as i love the idea of having a pet, its a huge responsibility so until im finically and mentally ready il hold off, but hey maybe sometime in the future who knows?

Greetings and salutations!! Do you have any recommended animal education sources? I’ve thought long and hard about pursuing an animal oriented college/career path. However, due to covid and living in a rural small town- animal education is limited to farm and veterinary care. I live on a small family farm, we have chickens, ducks, and goats :) we also have three dogs and my cat, Milo. So, I’m no stranger to animal care, I just want to expand my horizons and eventually become a foster parent for furry/feathery/scaley friends🥰
