    Thankfully Apple has gotten rid of this bothersome issue in their newer computers by soldering the SSD to the board and making it pretty much unrepairable! Thanks apple!

    the SSD controller needs to be compatible with Apple's EFI NVMe driver. There have been lists of fully compatible drives around for years, since the first iMacs and MacBook Pros with Apple's proprietary NVMe drive slots. Weird off-brand drives rarely work properly in macOS, but a handful of name brand drives work just fine with full compatibility. the Macs with full UEFI support tend to have wider drive compatibility.

    Can't this also be resolved by getting a name brand 2242 m.2 drive? Many other channels have the same model of MacBook model a1708 and can update to the 1tb m.2 drive with no issues. I have an adaptor for this type of drive. When a customer comes to me and needs a data recovery on an a1707, a1706, a1708, I just plug the drive into my tower with an adapter. They also make adapters so you can plug in a short M.2 drive to the macbook, but these models are notorius for having SSD problems. Of course Apple had to be different with their NGFF ports too.

    I have exactly the same model A1708.
    Recently I had similar issue ... I was seeing Flashing folder on startup and it won't boot. I took Macbook to Apple service provider .... they said something is wrong with SSD and its faulty.
    So now the work around I am using is that I have purchased external SSD Samsung EVO 980 500 GB with enclosure. I have installed Mac OS on it and using it. It's been couple of days now. This solution seems working fine.
    My question to you is that what do you think of this solution ? How reliable is this?
    Secondly , can we ourselves update the firmware on SSD without taking laptop to Apple shop ?

    • @lapfix
      @lapfix  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It very inconvenient and will be very slow as it will not touch the NVME speeds but limit itself to the port. Later macOS builds may not like it as an external and show a circle with a line through it when you boot. I wouldn't rely on it as a main computer

    • @FreedomForKashmir
      @FreedomForKashmir ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lapfix thanks for the reply.
      You are correct, it's not touching high speeds, it's limited just under 1000 MB/s.
      Should I just put the nvme SSD inside the MacBook with the help of converter rather than using as external with enclosure ?
      And what do you think about my second question. Is it possible for us to update firmware on internal MacBook SSD as they would do in free service program ?

    • @lapfix
      @lapfix  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only they "officially" have access to update the firmware. I wouldn't recommend it. I made a video about putting in an aftermarket ssd in this one, check it out and see if you would still like to: Here is the video th-cam.com/video/KzxD7NQVSU8/w-d-xo.html

    Will a non-genuine 500GB+ replacement SSD work, or does the replacement have to be an Apple drive that's 500GB+? I have a 2016 that seems to have this issue - original SSD failed to the point the disk couldn't be seen by the system. I replaced it with an OWC 240 GB which worked for a couple days. But at some point while I was away on vacation, the computer is back in the same state as before, no startup disk seen.

    • @lapfix
      @lapfix  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As we are also a Data Recovery center, we take our customer's data very serioiusly. Apple doesn't officially support these third party drives. Issues of any kind can lead to issues such as inaccessiblitly or data loss. Not to mention the quality of the cheap SSD Controller and NAND. Even Apple's 128gb and 256gb models have major issues, so more of a reason to avoid third party drives.

    This is the "Hunter Biden Laptop" model. The serial number was on the FBI subpoena in the New York Post article. I'm curious if you've followed the origins of the laptop and the steps taken by "John Paul Mac Isaac" in performing data recovery. If so, I'd be curious what your take is on his story of three dead macbooks and the $85 dollar manual file copy recovery performed on the 3rd unit. Mac Isaac also claims to have recovered 300GB from a laptop that's only supposed to have a 256GB SSD in it, a replaceable one too as you know, which Mac Isaac allegedly told Biden couldn't be done and formed the entire basis for why he had to do a granular folder-by-folder and file-by-file backup. That's when he says he discovered all of Biden's questionable behavior via thumbnails..
