New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten, our daughter Puck and toddler Bo on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Five years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home.

Even the protestant work ethic provided a day of rest ,a day of worship and fellowship with community. Time for the spirit and soul to recover ,restore, and regenerate. I appreciate your commentary, your gentleness and your honesty Leah. As a grandmother may I add, raising a happy and healthy family is the most gratifying career.

That is true. My great grandmother didn't even knit on Sunday because she considered it work. I think truly resting is too hard for many people today.

I see you as someone who has succeeded in taming your land, growing lots of good food for your family while bringing up two amazing little human beings. They are having an ideal childhood learning in a calm and loving environment. Thos will assist them in growing up to cope in an uncertain world. You and Martin are doing an amazing job. Your family has so much that money can't buy.

Thank you so much for sharing this video! 🥰 I've been a follower of your channel for quite a while now and it's been heartwarming to see your two lovely children grow. Just so you know, I'm 61 years young 😁 and after watching this video, I've been reminded of the importance of taking time to appreciate the little things in life, like stopping to smell the 🌹 more often. You and your husband truly shine as a beacon of light in this sometimes gloomy and topsy-turvy world. Sending lots of love to you and your family - you're both truly wonderful ❤️ 🌻💚.

So great for you to share. Yes since the beginning we been busy surviving. But somewhere along the way we got lost. Very lost. At least here in the USA.
I’m from Peru living here has always compering my old simple live. And now with lots of “I” things. I find myself searching for simple things. Not noisy. Shiny of looking for approval.
I’m finally there after a decade.
I lost years on that influential live. ( what a waste) but proud to have come out of that whirlpool.
Hope the best for you all. I send strong waves of energy to you all.
    And yes. A true.
    THANK YOU. !!!!

You are a normal person, doing normal things, havings normal dilemas and states of minds. And, these days, normal is better then ever.
Im also very tired of great achivements mentality. But... "Whatever works"
Respect a lot people that live simple by choice.

Excellent synopsis and the fact that you realize what is truly important in life while you are still quite young is important. The more things that we accumulate, the more responsibility we have to the accumulation, leaving less time to truly enjoy this wonderful life. Community will come and with it a variety of complimentary skills. Keep doing what fills your heart with joy and the rest will fall into place. Thanks for sharing.

I'm right with you on your observations about the pressures of the world. I did a degree in Philosophy back in the nineties, and when I found myself laughing whilst reading Nietzsche I realised that I wouldn't be graduating with a first class degree! I have had so many jobs since I graduated because rather than become machiavellian about a career, I have just moved around. Cooking, gardening, walking in nature, and making things are my happy places. To paraphrase a wise saying; a true friend is someone who will tell you to your face when you have messed up, but doesn't believe that it is a permanent condition. X

I liked the previous title: "Why are we rushing through life". I remember you saying you are dyslexic some time ago (a form of neurodivergence). Many neurodivergent people feel the way you do about society. We just see the world in a different way, and the way society is constructed, with values that often do not correspond to our standards, often fails our expectations. People who choose a simple life are very often neurodivergent.
I find that the intellectual development is very much, if not more possible, living this kind of life. There are many opportunities to delve into science of all things while living close to nature and doing things yourself.
Congratulations on your project and your garden. It has grown so much.

Understanding what you need is a large part of the treatment, so many people are trapped in a loop and at 56 I was one of them. In the last 3 years I have been going backwards, less stuff, less buying, less work (hardest to do) and soon moving to Portugal myself to do even less and I've ended up with so much more. I wish you every success in everything and especially with yourself. I love watching your videos especially the veggie garden.

Thank you so much for this video that echoes so many of my beliefs, concerns, and opinions. Never forget to take credit for the fact that you DID something!⭐️ My husband and I had so many plans before we had an unexpected baby. Then, our brains engaged all the fear gears. We must buy a house. Near a good school. We must work harder....
It was only when we retired that we could go back to our dreams, but many never get to that age or have the health to pursue them! Your message us excellent. Take time to enjoy life as much as you can, while you can.
Good luck to you . I send wishes that you succeed in your endeavours to slow down and rest. You are a terrific example to us all❤❤❤🎉

Thank you Leah, your vids are gentle and relaxing so all I have todo is watch and listen to be able to relax, I think that as I get older relaxing becomes second nature because you are no longer capable of running around and worrying if this or that doesn't get done, I have worked since I was 16, I retired at 60 and now my back prevents me from doing all the things I want but I've learnt to accept this, don't over work your back when you're young or your body will turn on you later I hope you and your family are well and happy, bye for now xxx🥰😘👍👍🙏🙏

    Beautiful, and so true.
You sound like me when young. Loved learning and did very well. But lots of *shoulds*.
And I just couldn't. I didn't have the desire or the drive, and I had no wish to be driven and overwhelmed by a career.
I knew I didn't want that life but it took decades for me to stop feeling vaguely guilty about that. Oh, it still hangs on some, but not so much.
One of the 'mantras' that helped me long ago, constantly repeated, was this: "Would I understand/forgive that particular fault/lack/error in someone else? Oh course!!" Then why not feel the same for myself....
There were so many freedoms and foibles and such that I had no problem with others having. But I had trouble giving myself the same slack. It didn't *fix* depression and anxiety, but it made it better.
    Love y'all.

The world-political climate of division, exclusion, and hate got the way it is by the kind of frenetic activity you are describing, your lifestyle and the way you are educating your children is positive, it is combating the craziness. 😊

Couples with young children frequently find that.
However, even though it is difficult, it is important to take short breaks, as an evening once a month. Possibly you might find friends with a couple of children and trade giving each other a night out.
Another possibility if children are compatible maybe the two families could take day outing on occasion to a family style festival or museum or picnic, something of mutual interest. Yes, requires creativity and planning, but maybe a rich experience for all.

Please be good to yourself. You guys rock, in every single sense! You provide so much useful information and inspire me a lot in terms of looking at life from a completely different angle - and especially here on TH-cam where most of the contents is pretty useless and overhyped. Also the narrative of most of the videos in the file of Portuguese countryside DIY off grid or semi-off grid don't leave that much mind space for the viewer. You are one of the few that sensibly takes a slower pace and in doing that you give more space for a viewer's imagination and own reflection upon things. Thank you so much and keep doing what you are doing!

Deprogramming yourself from the mental prison we are held in/under will feel like mental illness I suppose ,with everybody trapped in the system telling you that you are mad to think the way you do. Your maybe just "ahead of the game" and it's always a hard slog to be a front runner in a philosophical break away. Try Plato's allegory of the Cave. Stay strong as you clearly come across that way.🤛

Dear Lea, thank you for your this video. I love to watch your videos for many different reasons, one of them is how very laid back you often seem to when I compare it to my own life when I was a mom with small children. So take this as a compliment please. 🙂 I would love to give you my perspective on the world, on what is currently happening hoping this might help you in some way. As the older generation we've lived a similar life that you describe but what I can see is this: more and more people do not do (just as you) what was the 'obvious thing' to do after school etc and tried out something different. This, for my generation is something we love to see. I can see that through all the younger people searching for different ways to live things are shifting and they shift very fast! I know, it doesn't look like it from where you are standing at the moment but you already took steps to change things, to calm your mind and to schedule in some time for yourself. We, who are adults now are pioneer who are spearheading the new world that is building at this moment in time. This means we work very hard in overcoming all the things from the past and that clears the old patterns you experienced within your mind. Believe me: within the next very few years the world will be a much more pleasant place! I expect 2026 to be a point in time when many people have calmed down a lot (they will do that by choosing just like you: slower pace, letting go of their own expectations on themselves, self-compassion, you get what I mean). We will see unsettled weather patterns for reasons I won't go into here but this will all settle down. I can compare what I see now with what was before and KNOW this is the change we live t 🙂hrough! I wish you much calm and inner peace. Blessings and Respect!

I wonder if the current self-optimisation and hustle trends are just a last gasp of this image of humanity where your worth is measured only by your productivity. And if the next step is the realisation that thanks to automation and specialisation we are actually not required to work very hard if at all to get all that we really need (food, shelter, healthcare, education and stuff like that) and still make progress scientifically and socially as a species. And if with that realisation would come a new image of humanity, a kinder one. That would be really nice.

I love how you are growing inner peace, and learning to be thankfull for what you have. I also been on that jearny, and I admire your devotion. Please love yourself more because you deserve that, you are a strong mother, wife and being that is enough, you are perfect, just the way you are (my mantra for the last year)

A truely profound and personal vlog. Appreciate it. I find myself on the same shoes when I'm doing 'mundane' things like gardeing. Maybe we are too over-educated to the degree that we need to intelelctualize everything that our ancesntors were taken for granted as usual task for human beings?
Also, when you talked about 'The Protestant Ethic' and relate that to the spirit of Capitalism, I guessed that you should have studied sociology, or social anthropology, so you know the famous work by Max Weber. Isn't it?

You know what happiness is? Sipping beer with your friends, while watching the overgrown hedge, the trailer that needs anti rust paint, the rotten plank in the deck and putting it all aside. The world will do perfectly fine, without me or you around to manage it. We can only slightly control about five square meters around us. The rest is wilderness for which we have no REAL responsibility. Trillions of variables move every second you take a breath. Life is an overwhelming experience that smashes one around like wild water does. But wild and tame waters follow the path of least resistance. And maybe we should be more like water and go with the flow. Have you ever read Alan Watts? Harmony is doing as little as possible.

@@ourportuguesehomestead Thank you for telling me. Now I can understand how hard your present life is on your mental health. You were not interested as much in subjects that included learning to observe and experiment with your surroundings like I did. But you have switched to a life that will reward using your intellect to try to solve the puzzle of how to better manage the land you have purchased than those who once owned it did. You have chosen a very tough question to solve never forget that and it is a valuable question to solve.

Seriously, if you never take time to sit on your butt and just take in whats going on around you, then why bother being here? It is almost a crime that if a person is not seen as being "productive", then they are a waste. I have been surrounded by highly intelligent, motivated and driven people, but ask them what makes them happy and its usually about accumulating "stuff". Do realise, you are in the minority, so most people will possibly think less positive stuff about your life......but guess what, its YOUR life to live how you see fit; I certainly saw no rule book when i jumped off the merry-go-round at 23, and i have never looked back. I believe the that many do not want others to be living their lives, because many do not know what they want, or are too afraid of failure if they tried. No failing in life, we all gonna die anyway, best do what makes you happy.

I agree! I'd honestly be bored if my life was just about accumulating lots of stuff. So many people are afraid to try and the possibility of failure and then project that unhappiness onto others. Lucky for me I never really cared what other people do 😊

Ah true words , I have found that people who do (or attempt) a higher education learn to think. that is i.m.h.o. the greatest benefit of being a "student" no matter what was studied. I have seen people who did academic study in the culinary (chef) field did after a while excel in the IT field (yes you Oswin) ( a job that is to him much more rewarding ). My advice to everyone is start a study in a field that inspires you. after the study you may excel in a totally different field just because you leaned to think (proper) ( do not steep so low to study the function of the comma in the middle ages).

Prior to doing anything ask for help from God with a simple prayer. This helps to know you are not alone. In asking God you can get his help and not go too far. A best line: “Give us this day our daily bread”. The world does not have to do too great so long as you do what is needed for today and forgive those who fail.
