      I don't think Fincher is embarrassed of Spider-Man as a comic book character. Fincher came from an industry based on iconography and provocation; music video production. So he knows what's cool and interesting. Even before that he said he read comics growing up. But Fincher is a film buff 1st. So he's looking at Spider-Man from the lens of a great teenage story about adolescents. Something more 3 dimensional instead of a simple Superhero film. Up to that point he direct Se7en, The Game, and Fight Club. So it would've been introspective and vey psychological. While still looking cool of course because Fincher is Fincher.

    I feel like his attitude regarding the Spider-Man character and his stories might have been the key to Sony declining the offer. It's not all about having someone that is willing to follow studio orders (still a big part of it) but someone that is genuinely excited to work on the film project. His script, while it could have been good, sounds like someone that does not see the heart of Spider-Man within the comic books and wishes to throw all of that out the window just to say: "This is how you make a hero suffer, this is the way it should be, my way". This shows to me when he heard Andrew Garfield was playing the role of the character. No enthusiasm, no good wishes, no opinions. Just a comment on not being able to see the actor in spandex, which in my mind means "Whoever plays the character will not be taken seriously". Glad that he was not picked and I understand Sony's decision.

Doesn't seem like a person who really enjoys comic book characters outside of the possibility of making money off of them and in a way in which he does not feel shame doing so. He states clearly how he would be ashamed in doing the origins of Spider-Man on screen. That just shows he wasn't the right man for job.

    I'm sorry but thank god this guy wasn't allowed to direct the first Spiderman......Obviously, we never got to see his rendition, and we can use hindsight to look back on the Raimi Spidermans. But holy shit am I so damn glad 8-year-old me got Raimi's version, Tobey as my Spiderman, and everything that came with all that. I love what I got. Raimi did a perfect job of staying close to the comics while developing his own story and keeping it swaying between a lighthearted comic book movie and the realities of being a hero. The motifs, underlying messages, themes and symbolisms Raimi played with all make them better and better watch the more you see them. And yes, I liked Spiderman 3. Not the best one of the trilogy, but sometimes you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain, and maybe Raimi didn't have a choice.

      Have you read the comics? Plenty of gritty Spider-Man runs. Really dark stuff. Not campy. Camp is the old stuff. 80s and 90s onward haven't been campy in the comics. (The cartoons don't count.) The old 60s and 70s comics were cheesy sure. But saying Batman is gritty and not Spider-Man is like ignoring half of each franchise. Batman has tons of campy versions, including his original appearances in the comics, first tv show, and his first run of movies all the way up until they did Christopher Nolan's Batman. Tim Burton's was still campy with the darkness. They both have done gritty and dark/ and silly campy at some point.

I think the death of Gwen Stacy has to be earned after alot of setup, but I do really like the idea of jumping into the life of Spider-Man/Peter Parker as an experienced and older adult. I'm really trying to like Tom Holland as the current Spider-Man but he's just presented as being too young and goofy for my taste and not once do I feel he's ever the friendly neighborhood every man hero. With the multiverse a thing now I'd love to see an alternate earth film that's a return to basics with a smaller, more personal story and no crazy tech suits or inheritance to help him solve problems along the way. I wanna see Spider-Man do more with less ya know? It makes his victories feel so much sweeter.

    It wouldn't be bad if we weren't talking about 1999. One of the greatest pros of Sam Raimi was to translate a good synopsis of the classic Spider-Man character and its comic book dynamics into a vast audience, that's why everybody compares the new movies to his trilogy, because since then everyone wanted to do it different, either as a romance story with mystery themes or a comedy film series about growing up (with technological and fantasy elements in the mix).

    There's a reason why the MCU is the most profitable movie franchise in the history of the medium. We don't need any more "gritty reimaginings" of fun, over the top comic books. We already have Watchmen. If a director doesn't get the colourful, iconic earnestness of comic books, they shouldn't be making a comic book movie, especially if they have such clear and obvious contempt for the source material that they find it too embarrassing to actually film.

    • @gamemediafan1714
      @gamemediafan1714 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Being fun is not the problem. It's when you try so hard to make them "fun" that you actively avoid trying to give these characters any depth at all. That's the current MCU's biggest issue. A movie can both be fun and deep at the same time. The MCU doesn't realize this.

    • @NoJusticeNoPeace
      @NoJusticeNoPeace 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@gamemediafan1714 At this point the MCU has expanded to include everything from Winter Soldier's political spy thriller format to Ant-Man's heist flick. Are there some shallow MCU films? Absolutely. But for every Thor: The Dark World there is Thor: Ragnarok to try a different formula. I have no problem with big, dumb, fun action movies, even though I have no interest in watching them. Like you, I want depth in my movies. But depth doesn't mean grimdark. Winter Soldier is fun _and_ deep.

    Well, shit, Fincher should've directed the first Amazing Spider-Man film, at least. I'm sure Garfield could've convinced Fincher that he was the right man for the job. As for Fincher being in Raimi's place during the 2000s? It wasn't mean to be and rightfully so. But, I really wish Fincher directing the TASM franchise had happened now.

    id love to see a dark spider-man film, ones thats gritty and really pushes spider-man to his limits - i think the closest rendition we got to this was in Spider-Man 2, when he was against Doc Oc - however the plot during this adversity, in school and with MJ had Peter acting sorta down and depressed and with an attitude of "oh well i guess ill fight him" rather than him WANTING TO FIGHT BACK - to be angry and upset that things weren't necessarily going his way - thats a movie that i think a large audience could resonate with and relate to - good people being pushed to their limits and now have to literally fight back to stay alive - Peter Parker/Spider-Man is one of the few superheroes that embody this human trait we all share - in the later renditions with Garfield and now Holland, going for a teen P.P. having "adolescent" challenges, is quite thin and can only go so far, its not as compelling, and with Hollands version in MCU a lot of his challenges are simply brushed away with his "tech-suit" assisting immensely - P.P. didnt always stay a child - he grew up and had a life the same as everyone does, except he has to remain Spider-Man throughout it all - we need to see this side of the characters story that has never been told

    Terrible pitch for a movie that banks on negativity bias. Just because you can make a dark Spiderman movie doesn't mean you should. Especially if it is the first in the line of Spiderman movies.
    Everytime a comic book character is shown on the big screen, it inevitably changes the comic versions of the character moving forward. It can't be helped. And I for one think Spiderman, for all his hardships, should not be toned darkly.

    I MUCH prefer the Raimi's take on the Spiderman franchise excluding the Venom Symbiote. While I believe it would've been an incredible Dark/Gritty story the Target audience would be lost and it wouldn't have been a success for the company.
    It would've cancelled the entire trilogy imo and Spider-man would be lost to the wind. I think in today's climate, where the Multi-verse is now CANON it will and can exist as a standalone film. Having a dark/gritty spider-man would actually be a BIG box office success. Especially if Raimi goes back to his Horror-roots for a Horror-Spider-man flick.
