Earl Campbell is my favorite running back of all time, hands down. I showed my son this clip and he was in awe. He had never heard of EC. I told him that he is the only running back that I NEVER saw run out of bounds when a linebacker or anyone else was bearing down on him. You either bring him down, get ran over or dragged! LOL Hats off to the greatest running power back of all time, the Great Earl Campbell!

Walter Payton, was the same way, he would lower his shoulder, he was wreck less, never like going down. Earl Campbell, just had it bad cause he had to deal with the Steelers, and Raiders.

Earl Campbell was the most bruising, entertaining and unfortunate running back of all time. He had the misfortune of playing in the same division and at the same time as the “Steel Curtain” Pittsburgh Steelers with not much in the way of a supporting cast. He gave his all to the game and has suffered great physical calamity due to his unyielding desire to carry his teams to victory. I’ll always say I never saw a more impressive runner in my life and I’ve been an NFL fan since 1970. A great Hall of Famer and a true gentleman.

There was never a back that struck more terror in a defense. Not because of the yardage he would gain but by how he was going to gain it. Anyone can through a hole, running through a tackle and linebacker in full stride is quite a different matter. It breaks my heart though that he gave so much and it cost him so much more.

Everyone celebrates different and it hypes the crowd up. You may not like it, but others do. Earl Campbell has his way and even Barry Sanders has his way, but all of them aren't the same and let me remind you, it's not everyday that you make a touchdown in the NFL. The next play could be your last and then what? That's like telling a boxer after they win that they can't celebrate. Most will laugh at you and tell you to your face where you can go. Are Soccer players supposed to be quiet as well when they score a goal, especially when they are in the World Cup? Short answer is no. They are going to do the traditional slide and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

He said "I went to UT. I could probably help you get in" I thanked him and told him I'd think about it. He didn't mention anything about his football career. Finished the conversation with a "It was nice meeting you" and left. This was in 2014 in San Angelo Texas. I only found out he played football because my dad told me he was in the NFL. I grew up a Bay Area kid, (a 49ers fan) in the 1970s. The Niners were TERRIBLE - but, I also grew up idolizing the play of Earl Campbell. I saw all of these games that were highlighted here in this video. "The Tyler Rose" was a Mac Truck going 100mph downhill with a trailer full of lead pipes. It's a shame what happened to his body after his career was over, but it can NEVER be said that he didn't give his ALL on that gridiron. Thank you, Mr. Campbell for the joy your brought to all your fans. Every time this "thick boned kid" broke tackles on the playground, I would yell "Earl Campbell ! "

I was a Dolphins fan up until that Monday night game when every NFL fan in America was introduced to the greatest power back in league history. And as this highlight video demonstrated, his speed when pursued was unmatched by any player of his physical stature. Several comments described how much fun it was to see him play. It's a curious thing. A quarterback is a quarter the distance from the line, a halfback was halfway back from the line and a fullback was the full distance away from the line. Makes no sense the way the game has changed then to now. Infact even then, the fullback wasn't farthest away from the line. The names of the positions have always been a oddity. A flanker somehow turned into a receiver. And the weirdest of all is to have a Offensive player called, a "tackle". You would think a position called a "tackle" would be on defense. The best I ever saw was a preseason game where the Oilers have the ball on the 20 and he gets the ball for a run up the middle. No hole no problem. The line held their blocks while Campbell did a 90 degree turn ran down the line, outran the pursuit made another 90 around Barber and simply out ran every defender on the field. No one touched him. He hit at least 3 different gears rounding the end and pulling away. Wow! He and Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders are in a class separated from everyone else, even Emmit.

Most people note Campbell's power (which was breathtaking to watch), but he had an incredible sense of balance. During the play at 2:30, right before the goal line, he got bent over backward with almost all his weight on his right foot, so far he should have fallen down. Somehow he got his left foot under him again (with a defender on it), popped up, and got the touchdown. To me, this was the most impressive play of the ones in this video.

What makes that play even more incredible is the fact that Earl said he was unconscious when he went into the end zone. All that week there was a tremendous buzz about the league’s two hardest hitters, Jack Tatum and big E, meeting up in the game, and they did on the goal line. You couldn’t have written better if it was a script. Tatum said it was the hardest hit he ever took, just proving he had never been struck by a bus.

    From Wikipedia on Earl Campbell:”Health
Campbell has experienced various physical ailments in his later life. By 2001, at age 46, he could barely close his fist due to arthritis in his hands. He developed foot drop due to nerve damage in his legs, and has difficulty bending his back and knees. He was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in 2009. Because of his difficulty walking he uses a cane or a walker, and for longer distances a wheelchair. Campbell at first maintained the ailments were genetic, but said in 2012, "I think some of it came from playing football, playing the way I did."
In 2009, Campbell became addicted to painkillers prescribed for his spinal stenosis, taking as many as ten OxyContin pills a day with Budweiser. He went through rehabilitation and broke his addiction the same year, and since publicizing the incident in 2013 has spoken out about the dangers of substance abuse.”
