I agree with so many of the comments here, I had so many issues with a 'quality' car main dealer that I refuse to go there ever again. Issues like returning my car to me after a service with a cracked windscreen and not saying anything about it. Admittedly the crack had propagated from pre-existing heavy stone impact, but not to say anything, I think was inexcusable. On collection, I was kept waiting until after 6pm (when they close), so that all the service staff rats could escape without having to face me and explain themselves, utterly despicable behaviour.

@Rubber Thingy unfortunately a fully-main-dealer-stamped service book is still seen as essential at trade-in for a lot of cars. I owned one of the original Audi RS4’s for 11 years and used to take a bottle of Mobil1 to the main dealer with an instruction to supply a filter, change the oil and stamp the book. Everything else was either done by me or a model specialist. Maintaining dealer contact also seems to influence how deep the pockets of goodwill gestures go if an out-of-warranty issue arises.

My 2016 RRS was due a service in September and I just couldn't bear to take it to a main dealer. Last year's service was costed at £900 but luckily I didn't have to pay that as I did a deal when I bought the car for the first service free. The owner of my local garage is a long time Land Rover owner so I got him to do it and it was less than £300. I'm convinced that 2/3 of the main dealer service charge goes to paying for their swanky showrooms and the multitude of staff that appear to aimlessly walk about doing absolutely nothing useful.

What you actually need to do is find a “good main dealer”… I’ve worked for four main dealers over the years, and unfortunately they’re exactly the same as every other garage, some good, some bad. As far as “independents are better..” it doesn’t quite work out. Main dealers will always be the first and sometimes only source of up to date software updates, patches etc, as well as the fact that most will offer a good will contribution even when the vehicle is out of warranty. Find a good main dealer, don’t just assume because its franchised it’ll be top notch. 👍🏻

@@ninjabob8170 Yeah, there maybe something in what you say, you have to shop around sometimes until you find a place where the faces don't change every week and the service hits the spot, regardless of it being main dealer or independent. Personally I use a local Halfords (ha ha ha you say, clueless rip off cowboys), cos I've found a branch that know their onions and are willing to build up a relationship with regulars. They do stuff like free diagnostics (when they should be charging me 50 quid), and they have wavered other charges a penny pinching branch manager might lighten my wallet for. Trust me, I use them on a regular basis but my spend is modest.

Good rant! Good Customer Service is rare these days and it's so frustrating! Garages terrify me, especially when they don't have a clue what they are doing. I have a low mileage year 2000 E38, BMW 740 which blew the radiator back in 2017. I took it to a new garage in the new area where I'd just moved to and they replaced the radiator. A few days later my car started displaying all sorts of confusing messages about coolant level. I took it back to the garage and they told me that the head gasket had gone and it would cost £3,000 to get it done. The AA guy who had rescued me by the roadside had warned me about anyone telling me that the head gasket is dead since the car had not overheated. I decided to take my car home and took it back to my old garage where I used to live. They told me that the problem was that the car had not been bled properly. They charged me £60 for labour. No problems ever since and according to that clueless garage cowboys my car is still running with a bad head gasket. The car has done about 63K miles now and still going strong 😂.

I had a real sense of deja vu watching this. A few years ago I took my Discovery 3 into the Land Rover main dealer in Southampton for a service. I'd previously spent a fortune on it there. A few days and only about 30 miles later, I checked the oil, and it was filthy black. It clearly hadn't been changed in the service. I pointed this out to the dealer - no big deal; just change it now. But the manager insisted that couldn't possibly have happened and I was making it up. Having worked in a garage myself, I know things get missed, and there was the evidence! But no, what did I know? So I went away pretty cheesed off, and haven't been back there since. So they lost a customer - and I was thinking about buying a new Range Rover too - but they'll never know why. All for a bit of labour and a few litres of oil. Talk about rotten service.

I think personally one of the the things they would do is change the oil and filter and perhaps skirt around the rest of the vehicle, kick the tyres etc... it's common knowledge (on the 3.0L D4's) that with these suction pumps there is bound to be +/-200mls left in the base of the sump plus whatever oil is still lurking around the cooler so with putting in the new oil it is not very uncommon to check the oil after service and find it black, sadly if you want a clean looking oil after a service buy the petrol models. Diesels are dirty running engines with an amazing amount of soot build up especially those over the 50,000 mile mark. Having said this nothing is impossible and maybe the tech had diarrhea on that particular day... sorry about your experience.

Been using a local garage of experienced mechanics who work on everything, for years. They are an MOT garage so standards are high. Totally reliable friendly and trustworthy. They order in service packs or any other parts when required and often will say, that doesn’t need doing for another 3000 miles or so or some such observation. Never trying to inflate the bill, to the contrary. They have a lot of regular repeat customers. Great vid Matt.

Generally true, but I had a suspension issue with a D3. One "specialist" LR garage in Wales diagnosed 4x sensors broken. I did not believe 4 would go at once. Took it to my usual LR specialist in Northwich and in 10 mins he found a corroded wire. New connector kit and some soldering, £30. 170,000 miles, 14 years old, so car forgiven! Not the other specialist. Dodged a huge bill.

Amazing...I'm watching this in Kenya, and have worked as GM for Mercedes Benz and Subaru, i would have thought things would be vastly different in your neck of woods.
But, i agree with you, we don't train "mechanics" anymore, what we train are "techies" who can't think further than tying their own shoelaces if the diagnostic machine doesn't tell them EXACTLY what the issue is.
That bit about formal dealerships giving you back a dirty car would however entail a firing of someone in this part of the world.
How i overcame this issue was by spending a little extra money to beef up the admin and appointing quality controllers, who follow the car's progress from the time it's received to the time of delivery and who stand separate from the service advisors.

I went back and blasted them saying they weren’t concerned with two bolts left over! Next Subaru dealer garage new brake pads to the rear wheels, then end up bending the caliper resulting in the pads rubbing against the disc hard. Main stealers (sic) not just High end ones described but, like you mentioned, good service is the exception and leaves one surprised.
I had a Renault dealer, Shelbourne look at spongy brakes after a rear caliper change by an independent garage. I was told it'd be put on the Renault clip to run ABS bleeding (brake fluid reservoir had let air in I told them). I said pedal method was done several times to no avail and for them to apply constant brake fluid under 20psi to the reservoir which I also was told would be the case if they couldn't solve this.
Collected car and two technicians just did pedal method and said it was fine
Not happy I took it for a run then and said it's not fixed. A message was sent to the technician who I spoke to before I took it out for teat run. He sent a message that several hours diags and brake pipes would need replacing!!
Took to local garage, the pads and rear discs were shot and a brake specialist he uses bled the whole system. Issue sorted.
The advent of electric cars will mean more bull from disinterested, overpriced chancers as inde garages will not have software or licence to work on these cars.

A few months ago LR contacted me, to say their was a safety recall on front brake hoses - Ok I thought, the dealership is only round the corner from work, so I dropped it off one morning. Towards the end of the day got a call saying my car was ready for collection. Went to collect, to find out they hadn't actually replaced the hoses, LOL the reason? the wheel nuts were a little tight and they couldn't get the wheels off, and there was nothing they could do about it - WOW! (but they did wash it) I left (rather angry) to get home to receive an email from some head office, asking if my recall went well? Hmm as you can imagine my reply was not very flattering . Needless to say I immediately got a request from the dealership to return my car and it would be sorted! I actually refused to take it back, as I didn't want any clowns that couldn't even take a wheel off touching any part of my braking system! Anyway finally agreed to take it to another dealership, but had to drive it all the way there myself (sound familiar?). Anyway fast forward to the last few days, my car has developed a strange mechanical whirring noise underneath somewhere, been in to be checked, while they have highlighted a couple of worn components, they actually have no idea whats causing the noise - Hmm again sound familiar? Oh, love your videos keep em coming!! 🙂

yes fortunately here in Socal we have some good independent shops with that in mind I got myself a 2016 RR diesel...with a warranty. It's such a great vehicle. I have no plans to take it to the dealer, I think the process is now plug it in if there's a code replace the part and if no code then send it back to the customer. Trouble shooting is an art they don't teach or promote anymore. I had this same issue at the Mercedes dealer.

So true Alan. I also know an old school mechanic of 40 plus years experience. Could probably strip down a engine and put it back together blindfolded. The piece of mind I have when ever I go to him is worth 100 times his weight in Gold. Normally I would live in fear too for the day he retires, but fortunately people like this don't have idiots anywhere near them, so his younger business partner is near enough as good as he is and he's also training up his young son.

I had this exact issue with a 2017 vogue SE and Landrover insisted there was nothing wrong with it.
This combined with a faulty fuel pump and a leaky oil cooler with in two weeks of getting a car that was “approved used” saw me reject the vehicle 🤷🏼‍♀️

It is the Transfer case service. Needs the fluids flushed once. Run and then another change!

When it comes from a Land Rover fan it means something. JLR want the premium brand image but it seems the dealership network is a lot less than premium.
I remember your review of the Bentley dealership who pick up your car and treat you with TLC, attending to your every need. Oh how very different JLR, watch and learn chaps.

My sister currently lives in the UK, around london somewhere (moved from Australia 2 years ago) and she constantly tells me how useless everyone is there compared to people in Australia. She said no one keeps appointments, it's impossible to get anyone to do anything or show up at the time they said, even the people she works with in an office are all extremely lazy. It was a real culture shock to her, especially since we consider Australia pretty laid back, but she tells me after living there that the two countries can't be compared when it comes to work ethic. It's probably true now that you made this video ,since in the last week I had 3 guys come out to do quotes for some jobs for me and 2 of them brough their children along with them haha In saying that I've had my own personal experience with car dealerships here and they are pretty much identical to your experience there. You will get a far better service and better trained staff from an indepent shop, especially one that's owner owned.

"Everyones useless" was the phrase we continually used with our Vogue which we bought from new in 2007. A series of really minor faults such as the seatbelt light never going out, meant the car going back to various Land Rover dealerships and the problems never getting solved. £76k turned into £15k in about 4 years. Never again.

My Range Rover two door went over 500,000 miles and the only trips to the mechanic was for regular service. Many miles off road, rocky tracks, logging roads and sand, firm or soft. It never missed a beat. My only complaint was the plastic seat covers, I replaced them with hand made cow hide covers.

It should be a reasonable to expect excellent customer service from all garages, but especially main dealers given the premium you pay for their product. Sadly your experience is somewhat typical these days, and not confined to the car industry.
Problems will occur with every product at some point, it's the attitude of those being entrusted to resolve the issue that matters most for me. Great video as always.

I could waffle on the topic of useless main dealers for hours, I used to work for a BMW dealer and left in 1999, the difference in quality and service now is phenomenal. No attention to detail anymore, we would have filled your tank and you would have had the service manager and master technician at your disposal. Congrats on getting it sorted!

I agree, owned BMW's between 2002 and 2020 and in that time, the dealer I used got more expensive every year but the quality of their service just went down. They were really really good back in the early days and I felt special as a customer but it got to the point where they wouldn't even answer the phone or report anything back during repairs. The final straw was the day i booked a while-u-wait MOT for 9am. After sitting around waiting for an hour and a half I finally asked them if it was done and the guy looked at me and said, 'where did you park your car again, is yours the silver 5 series?' It took them nearly 3 hours to do a pre-booked MOT. Unbelievable. I've never been back.

I hear you. I have seen this countless times. Sadly everyone assumes ALL garages and car dealers are the same. I have had some amazingly good experiences with main dealer service depts. But when I think about them it's always been just ONE person in there that went the extra mile. Afterwards when dealing with someone else the world turns to shit at the same dealers...
