PLEASE do a video what a heavy offset iron or hybrid does vs a regular face of a club does on the trackman!
i really love that Rick comes back to the basics and does club reviews and golf coach videos.
Coaching vids??
Combined with a high spin rate ball this could be a huge help to so many players. The confidence of a high loft club is awesome IF you can tame your swing and keep your wrists firm. Thanks Rick
If the more upright feeling gives more confidence, wouldn’t using your current wedges with a more upright lie angle for maybe just the 60 be something to try out?
Surprised you are still struggling with chipping after that short game lesson you did. That video was amazing, really helped me be a lot more consistent.
I loved that. It was great to see one of the best coaches in the world share his stuff. Surprised it didn't seem to work for Rick too.
@@stephenmcgeown I suspect at least some of that is 1 solid lesson butting heads with decades of muscle memory
In my opinion it's 100% a confidence thing. We all know he can 👍
He's stalling through his swing from what I see.
I agree though! That short game video helped me a whole lot!
@@CptHMM - Yea that is why he is using his hands so much.
My favourite videos of yours are these random experimental club reviews.. you are helping to evolve the game by testing and covering stuff like this
Love the fact that even with all the success you’re still so dedicated to bettering yourself and bringing us along for the ride! Big respect man!
Thank you so much!!
If Rick was dedicated to bettering himself he would be able to break 75. 😂😂😂
Obviously joking, love the content Rick. 😘
Sluuuurp
Yea it’s nice to see the process, but I don’t think it’s surprising? Would be a bit of a disappointment if he didn’t, everybody wants to get better at golf and despite Rick being a very solid player there’s still so much he can improve in his game.
As someone who took a journey from 30+hcp to mid single digits in a few years I can totally understand that - I might even say that I enjoy the practice and working on my game now more than when I was a more mediocre player.
@@dannstarrjp yeah it wasn’t so much surprise but I’m sure at times it must be tempting to just rest on your laurels when you have such a following!
Class that you had that journey though as someone new to actually playing golf (have my first 18 hole round booked in for this weekend 🥳) hopefully some day I’ll join you in those single digits 😅
I used the hell out of my 64° wedge. I always ended up in short yardage areas that a sand wedge would be too much club. The 64 is great for getting up and down from weird approach yardages.
I use a 56 laid parallel to the ground , it has 11 degrees of bounce that increases when the face is opened up ! Perfect 👍
Rick, have you ever thought of bending one of your wedges more upright and seeing how you fare with that? Maybe not to that amount of lie angle, but it might be interesting to see what happens.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I was also wondering how much you can bend the hozel without compromising the club. Interesting thoughts though.
Ping should be able to get really close out of the box with a White or Maroon dot.
I have a very similar club that's a 55 degree and while I'm still getting used to it, it does give me more confidence around the greens to avoid the dreaded "club goes completely under the ball whiff" situations.
I used your previous video where you stand closer and use the toe of the wedge and it's worked wonders for me to remove unnecessary wrist movement. Now this type of wedge is better due to the angle.
Great to see something new in an area of "YIPS". I would look at this as more of a prototype and possibly expand into a line of various lofted chippers and perhaps more upright putters. Nice review Rick.
I used a square strike 55 degree which was nice but I like the look of the sky lob better. With practice I think it could be a deadly weapon
I thought that short game lesson you took a while back ENCOURAGED the golfer to use more wrist when chipping... I watched that video and it revolutionized my short game! Your verbiage here seems to contradict that message a bit, and I'm slightly concerned that you didn't say something along the lines of "if wristiness works for you great, but if it doesn't, maybe try this..." Love your content!
I love these types of videos because they’re so relatable to my game 😂
haha
the water part at the end or the chipping problems lol
I have had a 64° wedge in my bag for the last 2 years. I absolutely love it and am a sniper with it. I hit it from 125 in and on full swings can consistently hit that number. I struggle with the 64° around the greens where i frequently blade it so much to the point where i am on the verge of buying a 70° for use around greens. The 64° i have has been a godsend club in my bag. So accurate and feels great. Generally i hit a good tee shot, top my 56° 30 yards, then pull this club out for a full shot.
This is why your the 🐐Rick . You are constantly working on the game that we all need to practice more . Just recently switched from a chipper thanks to your golf tips .
Years ago I had my 58-10 Mizuno wedge bent to a 68 lie angle. I don’t use it from the bunker or on full shots, just on difficult chips from the rough. It does tend to go left so I adjust my stance a bit. It has earned its place in the bag many times over, and the feel is of course Mizuno-like. The club tech didn’t want to do it because he thought the head might be damaged bending it that far, but I assumed the risk and it was no issue as Mizuno uses a fairly soft steel and/or I got lucky.
when I am just off the green I have been using your tip of using my pitching wedge, putting the toe down. ... soft hands toe down using a putting stroke = great results.
Interesting club and concept. I'm a big proponent of becoming great with the tools you have, so gimmicky clubs don't always excite me (not that this club is truly gimmicky). But the idea behind this is pretty good. I still like taking the wedge I have and doing what you showed in your chipping video: a more upright stance, more upright angle of the club, etc. Thanks for trying this out and sharing!
Good advice Rick, been working on my chipping and pitching just shot a 79 ( I'm not that good and I'm 63) with a full shoulder replacement
I picked up a 64 wedge from sports direct, cheap as chips. And I love it for a 20 yard over bunker shot. I can do a gentle but full swing. Pops it up and stops.
I'm really surprised that your not practicing what Dan Greive showed you and not using the bounce of the club to improve your chips.
I saw that video and have been practicing it, and it's benefited me so much with my rhythm and feel. Started out feeling like I'm doing my shots in slow motion, now just feels relaxed and easy. Great lesson and something Rick should absolutely take to heart.
Literally disregarded everything Dan taught him
To be fair this could of been in the back library. And filmed 3-4 months ago.
Pretty sure Dan said going flatter helps. Now he’s going upright?
@@ronaldboneslinger the video with Dan was filmed 5 months ago…
Told you ages back. Get a Cleveland Smartsole shovel. Impossible to duff. Look a bit of a goose using one but they work. Had the yips for a period and it helped me work my way out of it and build confidence before migrating back to a traditional wedge
Keep grinding Rick. Love the review videos as well as all other content.
I had a Sidewinder brand 64degree wedge for about 24 years until it was stolen and I loved it.
As a mid handicapper and then into more recent low times it was great around the greens, great off a tight lie as you didn’t need to open it up or adjust your hands and it cost me £20 brand new in 1999.
Now using a Lazarus 60 which is ok but just not the same!
I use a 64 degree Slazenger and it’s an amazing club. I use it out of bunkers and for around the green. Helps with high shots to tight pins or playing delicate shots onto the green. Some people say it’s a ridiculous club but I love it. It did take some getting used to though.
I love the idea of the club, but it needs a little more R&D. I don’t mind specialty clubs like the ChipR, because I’d rather use one of them and get close, than smoke a chip off the green 😂 great video, Rick!
You should hit 5 shots from each position with this club vs your standard 60°, see if it should get into the bag 👀
Love that your still trying to find “cheats” for golf ⛳️
Goes to show just how relatable you are. Even if your better than you realise.
Hopefully you review the launch pad Irons from the unboxing video as well soon.
How about taking one of your old 60° wedges and have the lie angle adjusted more upright. That could be the answer you’re looking for….✌🏼✌🏼
I weaken the right hand extremely for the putting style chip on a normal wedges it works everytime … just feel the distance with the body and throw it turning through the ball weight on front leg .. can use different releases ball positions … swing out to in … toe down steep shaft … low hands open it up … just lock the face with the weakening of the right hand … different strokes for different folks
Been on the 64 degree squad for a loooong time. I use my decades old McGregor (yes you read that right) everywhere within 30 yards using different ball positions and swings. If I lose this club or it cracks due to my sharpening the grooves and finally wearing through to the back side I’ll be lost. Keep it in the short stuff.
There are definitely some positives and negatives to a club like this which Rick went over. My technique with chipping I think is simple and works for me. I basically use the same stroke all the time. A very simple putting stoke which Rick demonstrated. The thing I might do differently is change the club and let the loft do the job from my 50, 55, and 60 degree wedges for different distances. Keep the swing simple and let the club do the work. The thing I don't do is use this swing in a bunker. Normal swing for the bunker and adjust the club face for distance.
Can you heat/bend a regular 60 degree to 70 degrees upright from TM/Vokey and see how it compares?
Love it! Try everything. Try the callaway pm grinds
It’s great that you review Clubs like this and the Ping Chipr. You never forget us non-scratch Golfers. 👍
I've started using the Matt Fitzpatrick reverse grip on my greenside chipping - it's a game changer!
I think we have seen this before. Rick finds a club that does help with a lot of his problems. The problem is, and we all struggle with this, is based on brand and looks etc, we are hesitant to give it the respect it might be due. However, I think Rick is finally coming around ti the idea of getting clubs that improve his current game and not how he used to be. And I think that is a good sign of growth. Much respect

@@jackmckayfletcher977 very good point. Please explain further
Hi Rick. I put on a thicker non tapered grip on my 50* and 56* wedges. Lets me shorten up my grip on the club and toe down the clubs for chipping. Works great. Gary from Canada
I love these types of clubs reviews! I have to say though, having watched the Dan Grieve video probably a dozen times, I wonder what his opinion on this club would be. He recommends less upright wedges.
Thanks for taking it to the course Rick 👍
I love this wedge. I love your TH-cam channel Rick ❤❤
I know practice practice practice. But at what skill level do better clubs start to make a noticeable difference? Iv used the Callaway Edge set from Cosco and the Lazrus wedge set for 3 years now after using an old handed down set for my first year of playing. They were my first "new" clubs since I started playing. I usually shoot between 92-96. Would better clubs knock a few strokes off or not so much?
I too struggle with the chipping, can't stop de-celling and am the worst bunker player out there ( but am a 4 to 6 handicap depending on time of year) had to switch to left handed pitch and chipping which is better than my right side . You can just order a wedge from PING pick your loft and order it Maroon dot which is 5 up 69 degrees.
Great video Rick. What of you got a 58 or 60 degree Vokey, bent it more upright and cut the shaft down to the same size. It would be interesting to see how that would perform against this club.
nice video again rick, keep it up
I have an old ping 60degree. would bending it to similar shaft angle as that 64 degree work?
I would love to see a lesson with Pete Cowen! I feel like it would be a great video and actually help
Interesting that the short game lesson you took emphazied on using the wrist to work the bounce of the club
You are on the right track like a pendulum motion no flick of the wrist . Watching your swing club is turning left through the shot keep it straight buddy. 👍
Rick love the channel, however this is exactly what I think most players do. They get a great short game lesson, “cough” Dan Grieve, and somehow the fix for your short game is a new club! Haha, I understand creating content so cheers for the video. Golf equipment world still needs to sell stuff too, so yeah done rambling.
One of the biggest issues regarding these shots rests in the ability to practice...a lot!
If you don't practice over and over again, in all the different situations, you won't know how far it goes. As soon as doubt creeps in, your rhythm and length of swing changes and such variation kills a short game stone dead. Ultimately, that's where most amateurs fail, not surprisingly.
It's called 'feel' and rick has none.
Nice review. I can see where it would be useful, but I can also see where it lacks in utility. If it was a 58* wedge, would that make it more likely to go in the bag? 🤷♂
Rick what kind of watch do you wear and does it have to do with golf, currently in the market
Always cool how Rick finds new and weird golf stuff to test!
The questions of maybe less loft are the answer. Wow great test. Thanks Rick
Definitely need a “what’s in the bag” from Rick soon with him reviewing clubs and saying “I might heir add this to the bag” 😂😂
I LOVE the Chip-r. its so hard to mess up with it.
I actually use your toe down wedge tip a lot when I'm really close to the green. This is quite interesting.
Would like to see Wilson do a rendition of this wedge. They have their "Harmonized" wedges and those have a decent feel for an inexpensive club.
Wild idea, but just get used to your regular wedges. I know, mind blowing
On a serious note, with these delicate shots take your regular lob and get closer to the ball keeping the toe down and doing the exact same thing or swing Rick is speaking of really helped my short game. Given I’m still a low/mid handicap player I also have a full time job and only get to play 1 maybe 2 a week so never rule out what may make sense and work for someone else
I think the lie angle is key. I use a chipper (56 degree) but the height of the club face is short. So when I try to use it in thick grass the club can slide right under the ball. That’s the limitation. The higher lie angle makes all chippers much more useful; much easier to handle close to the green. The club you reviewed has a normal height face AND a higher lie angle. I think that’s the right formula.
As a huge fan of my 64-degree wedge, I'm not sure how helpful this video is. A comparison with a regular 64 would have been better. It took me a while to fully understand my 64, but now it's the most valuable club in my bag. Great from 80 yards out, in the bunker and very short lobs. Just keep your weight on the front foot. I'm a high-handicapper and this is my miracle club.
I watched a Phil Mickelson video a few years ago and it changed my chipping and approach forever. I cannot chip off my back foot, it doesn't make sense to me, everything is thin and comes out with no touch. Feet together, weight forward, ball off the front foot, hands in front of the ball. Chipping inside of 20 yards has become the best part of my game. I use the same concept on anything inside like 80 yards that isn't a full wedge.
I feel like i would blade that? I would never use a lob wedge for the shot your hitting in this example.
But hey, to each there own. I hope it works for you.
Thanks for showing us.
Hi Rick, love the videos and seen the mishaps of your chipping, Now I'm no coach but have you considered trying something like the momentus Short game wedges from the old golf channel adverts? or maybe you could do with a heavier shaft in your wedges. all in all still trying to get better at this game we love is a W in any book :) Keep going it'll come back ^_^
It’s fun to try out new design clubs and ideas to suit your own game.
I’m a terrible golfer and have no accuracy on my approach shots. I often find myself just off the green. When I first started, I relied heavily on bump and runs, but found myself in many positions where that style isn’t ideal. I’ve become much better with my 58 degree and using a lot of wrists to get it up in the air, but with so much wrist action, there’s always gonna be the misses. With distance control practice, this looks like a club that could help minimize those wrist mistakes and help eliminate the need to look up too soon, which almost always results in a thin shot across the green. Interesting video Rick!
Even with a 58° you don’t need any wrist action unless you are in a bunker. For consistency you should keep your wrists set like they are bonded in iron
@@Iamwrongbut I’m clearly not Phil Mickelson, but he cocks his right wrist pretty hard on the backswing, and comes through with that wrist on the downswing on lofted chips in his Chipping 101 video.
Perhaps, I’m playing fast and loose with the term chipping, as people often do, but at the moment of my comment, I had more of a short side, over a bunker (which seems to always have a slope running away from the bunker) kind of shot in mind, where I’m hoping to make more of a short flop kind of shot.
But yes, I do agree that taking the wrists out of it on typical chips makes for less duffs and thins. Also, I don’t mean to sound argumentative at all. I’ve only been golfing for a short period of time compared to many who comment here. I’m doing my best to clarify discrepancies so I can learn. Feel free to reply if I’m still way off track! 👍
Got to agree with you rick I would have to remove a club and not sure which if it worked for me
Wedges
I have a few
Ping tour w 52, 58 degree soft reg shafts
Tom Watson RAM 810 55,50 degree wedges
Tommy armour 56 degree soft reg shaft cut down 1 inch
Nickent 56 degree with reg shaft
All work for me mostly lol😅
Format for this video was really good. Only additional item that could have potentially helped is add a couple shots with your normal wedge to show and talk about the differences at the same time.
hey rick
wondering if you have put the taylormade putter in the bag that you tested on H.I.T
Hi Rick, would you recommend to bend regular lob wedge to 70 degree of lie? (to achieve similar set up?)
Please, please, pleeeeaaassseeee test the new 69° wedge by 69 golf that has been all over social media. I've been contemplating buying it
you move your weight to your back foot on your transition on the bad chips. by moving the upper body slightly right.
Could get one of your standard vokey's bent to 70 degrees
Ric try a one length wedge. It is 7 iron length and therefore is much more up-right. Comes in any loft you’d want and much better feel. Also you can play a higher variety of chips (longer length/more speed) before you have to hinge the wrists.
Love the videos
Interesting, the limitations seem to be the same as any other 64* wedge, it’s pretty darn hard to hit a long bunker shot even with an open face 60, let alone a 64!
Another reason the PGA/USGA needs to increase the clubs in the bag to 16! It was 1920 when they came up with 14 clubs! A chipper, driving iron, extra wedge, hybrid, etc! Plus the manufacturers would love it!
Could you get the lie angle changed on one of your regular wedges?
Hi Rick....I always enjoy your videos and wish you the best with your channel...I have a request...I play in a group for fun...We are all seniors with the oldest being 83...I'm 75 and at times, I'm out driven by some of the younger guys in the group...I recently read about a small golf company which makes a ball, the MG Senior ball...The ball is not USGA conforming...Their claims are that with a slow swing speed,
Oh nice, I requested you hit this from the grass on the orevious video, looked really interesting.
Going against everything Dan Grieve taught you 😉😂
I might need this, I really want to see your review of the Wilson Launch pads, before I spend £450 on a set.
Seems like the same mindset that caused Bryson to switch to one length clubs. Every time the swing and ball placement are the same. Makes sense to put that much lift on a club and angle it like a putter.. make the game as simple as possible 💯
Would you ever put a putting grip on one of those? Encourage a putting stroke?
Within the hour #54 Always good to see Ricks impartial commentary
Big fan from Oklahoma
Chipping is even easier than putting ! I still don’t understand why people get the chipping yips , chip with your SW with no wrist hinge , take note of Jason Day’s technique, it’s perfect! 👍
Dan Grieve will be fuming with you for this 😅
I hit all my bunker shots like chip/pitch shots...no sand b4 the ball. Pretty hard sand around here...no plugs but the technique should still work. That club your using would work in the bunker... it was your swing that was the problem
Hi Rick! Loved the video! Found the audio wasn't as clean as usual, all I could hear was Dan Grieve screaming
For quite a few years now I've been watching a lot of instructional videos here on YT from Brit pro teachers (Rick Shiels, Matt Fryer, Danny Maude, etc), and one thing I've noticed is how golfers in the UK seem to like to chip with lofted wedges. Why is that? Here in America we like to chip with the least lofted club that will get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible, like an 8-iron or even a 6-iron if it's a longer distance. If you're farther back then a PW should work, or maybe you're pitching instead of chipping.
Nice review and at the same time, it would have been more enlightening had you taken more of a "real swing" as well instead of just using the Bryson DeChambeau-like stiff arm approach, especially out of the bunker. You made the adjustments and then evaluated the club based on those swings. Adding swings that would be a bit more normal (understanding some adjustments need to be made for the lie angle) would have added very valuable information to the final evaluation of the club.
I would’ve loved to have seen how a plugged bunker shot should’ve done or one that was like right at the lip of the bunker. I think that’s where that club would really struggle
Those bunker shots were not great for Rick, who is pretty good out of bunkers, but, for the golfer this club is designed for, clearing that lip would be fantastic. You have to put it in context! A few folks would have so much more fun with one of these and a chipper in their bag.
For comparison, why don’t you get one of your old volkeys and see if you can heat it up and bend it upright? the same as that club better head better shaft better grip maybe it’ll work
Rick you gotta giveaway whatever wedge you don’t keep! That would be so cool!
