  • In this episode I am boarding the Smyril Line to Iceland. Before I can board the ship, I have to do a Covid-19 test, which goes smoothly. But as soon as I am on board, things don't really go as planned. First I manage to break my cabins door, and next I am not feeling very well as we encounter 3-5 meter high waves to which my stomach does not agree! What am I getting myself into?!

Motion sickness is caused by a conflict between what you see ( a stationary computer, or wall), and what you feel, rolling and pitching.
It will help you if you look out the window at the horizon. You inner ear, and your sight Will agree with each other and ease your stomach.
    Good luck

So typical of Noraly………. Seasick and still has a smile for us all. Many years ago I suffered through a horrible trip across the Irish sea on a crappy ferry with broken stabilizers. We were like 18 hours at sea, a good portion of it stalled out by the Isle of Man. I could see the lights on the Island going up and down. Waves were coming over the bow of the ferry and the water was coming out of the toilets. It was the most miserable feeling to be seasick the whole time and I felt like jumping overboard. I never saw so many people sick in my life. We were in what was called the Pullman Lounge and it was basically like sitting in a cinema watching everyone around you throwing up. I will avoid car ferries as much as possible after that. Strongly suggest dosing up on meds before sailing.

Hello Noraly, as a former Navy Sailor, I can tell you most of us had a transition time if in port for extended time. It took a day or two, or three 🙄 to get our "sea legs". In the worst weather a few would still get queasy....and the "saltier" veterans "helped" by smoking cigars in our berthing compartment 🙂.

They say there are two stages to seasickness- the first when you’re afraid you’ll die, the second when you’re afraid you won’t.
From long experience and much time at sea the only reliable way to avoid it if you are prone are scopolamine patches.

As the first 100 of the many comments does not show anything about it, I will elaborate a little about knækbrød and smørrebrød. The best way to descripe smørrebrød is to descripe it as an open-faced sandwich. The bread that is used for it is a sourdough rye bread which is quite soft and is called rugbrød (rug=rye and brød=bread). The recipes for rugbrød and knækbrød are actually quite similar, but rugbrød is much more wet and baked in a loaf tin whereas knækbrød is baked flat which makes them a lot more crunchy. They do have rugbrød in Sweden but they tend to add sugar which we do not in Denmark. The open-faced sandwich is then prepared with different kinds of pålæg, which is the stuff you put on top. It could be spegepølse, a dried pork sausage, with roasted onions and remoulade (sauce remoulade) or salmon or pigliver paté with pickled beetroot. There are tons of possibilities, but you will rarely be able to by them pre-made insmaller convinience stores, but you will be able to find them at butcher shops or dedicated shops called smørrebrødsbutik.

I know exactly what you mean. I took the ferry from Denmark to Norway, beautifully calm and the sea was like glass on the outbound trip. Returning it was similar to yours. Lost my appetite, some drunk guy kept trying to talk to me, they would not let you out on deck for fresh air (understandably but still...) I even rushed to the bathroom thinking I was going to get sick. When I opened the door the smell that hit me and the sight of 20+ people all being sick at once snapped my head back. A voice in my head said, "you CANNOT be sick". I ran back to my cabin and actually slept on the cold, hard floor but I did not vomit.

Your smile and being able to laugh as you endure being seasick show the true strength of your character. We have a medication you can buy here in the USA without a doctor's prescription called "Dramamine," and if you take it an hour before going on a boat, it really seems to stop the seasickness. Anyway, that you for your bright, shining personality--you are a beacon of positive energy no matter what the circumstances, it seems, and that helps the rest of us in this crazy, chaotic world in which we live. Hope you are feeling better and that you enjoy the next days of your trip--take care!

Ah, seasick. It passes after a few hours when you get your “sea legs”. Enclosed spaces are not good when the sea first gets rough. Another trick I used was to be outside and watch the sea horizon, while rolling with the movement like you are a “plumb bob” always rolling your body into the motion. Old sailor trick. HATE those dry heaves. Yuk.

It's the best thing since bubble gum, after trying everything from copper bangles, ginger and the usual motion sickness pills sold in the pharmacy , I can highly recommend them.

Your experience with that lock reminded me of a time when I checked into a hotel and they didn't have anyone to show me to my room, it wasn't a problem and I just took the key and my bags and found the room quickly. The lock was in the center of the door knob and the key would only turn about 45 degrees one way but wouldn't unlock it, holding the door knob with one hand and the key with the other I jiggled them both in alternate directions but couldn't open the door. I took the key out tried it the other way round again and again but it wouldn't unlock the door. Getting frustrated I tried again this time turning the key and the door knob to the left and the door knob came off in my hand !
The key was stuck in the lock in the door knob so I took it back to reception who just looked at me very strangely and did not know what to do. As they had no more empty rooms I went back the room and managed to put the door knob back on and unlock it by turning them both to the right ! A maintenance guy came to the room a couple of hours later and tried to figure out what had happened but couldn't and I could not show him how it came off the first time, it gave us no more issues for the whole time we stayed there !

It was scheduled to take twenty-six hours and I think I spent twenty-two of them crouched over a toilet. The Bay of Biscay, in the first week of March, during a force six storm was too much. On the first day from Bilbao I did a huge four kilometres, to the very first campsite I saw where I tried to recover. Oeps. [Edit for typo].

But when I stopped working at sea, almost 2 years have passed and last year I travelled from Aberdeen to Lerwick on Shetland by ferry. It was a heavy storm and I was so seasick. The night was hell. Thanks for a peek at the "other half" of your life. Helps to appreciate the wonderful quality of your videos even more. I'm sure you enjoy the editing process to some degree, reliving favorite moments, etc., but it's got to be tedious at times! Thanks so much for all the effort you put in to post such top notch videos for us to enjoy! Your candor is so appreciated and refreshing, even sharing your seasickness with us! Bless you! I've never had the pleasure, but did come close on the U.S.S. Guam years ago. Almost lost it in the ready room, but once I got up on the flight deck and could see the horizon everything calmed down. Even that hint was not at all pleasant! So sorry you had to go through that :( No fun, but I guess it's part of the price you pay for adventure ;)

Thanks for the video. Hope you don’t overload yourself with work on this trip. You’re such a delightful host, soldiering on even when you feel rotten. Take as much time as you want/ need to maximize your enjoyment of what is, by any measure, a whopping great adventure. Best wishes that you stay healthy.

That part of the Atlantic is the 'perfect storm' area. You get the collision of the North Sea current, the Arctic current and the Gulf Stream current, causing massive waves, the occasional hurricane, often brutally treacherous conditions. Always good for a love affair with the toilet bowl.

Noraly, looking at a computer screen while navigating those big waves is definitely why you became sea sick!! I am very prone to motion sickness and I know what to avoid! (Although, honestly, I would have gotten sick in those conditions without looking at the screen!!) I hope the rest of your Icelandic trip goes well.. stay healthy and keep the rubber side down! ~a Canadian fan- 66 yrs old and still riding an adventure bike!

While serving in the Navy I was prone to sea sickness. I learned that saltine crackers and water are the best for you. The crackers absorb the stomach acid and give you something to vomit. Small amounts of water just keep you hydrated and help wash down the crackers. I used to begin eating crackers prior to getting underway, I believe they really helped to prevent and overcome sickness. Good luck, love the videos.

I love your openness. You're not afraid to show your foibles and weaknesses. It still strikes me funny, though, that you can ride from Patagonia to Alaska and over incredibly tough terrain in Kyrgyzstan, but an ocean voyage on a large ship gives you the gollywobbles. When I was a kid (I'm now 71), my parents told me I shouldn't read in the car because it would give me a headache. I don't remember if they included stomach whoopsies. By the way, count me as a big fan.

aditional detail about the bread: Yes Knäckbröd is Swedisch, and Smørrebrød i Danish. But since Knäckbröd is just the bread in itself, Smørrebrød is the bread (not to much of it) and the topping on the bread. So you won't find any Smørrebrød in a supermarket in the row with all the other bread types.

Hi Itchy Boots, your sea sickness reminds me of the time I went from mainland Australia to Tasmania ( which takes about 15 hours, from Melbourne to Davenport in Tasmania ) most of the motorcyclists were ALL sea sick, so I can sympathise with your situation!

    Good Luck

Hi Noraly, Getting onboard and off board a ferry by motorcycle is always a hassle with waiting, manoeuvring, tie downs etc. but hey, it's part of the journey. Also sea sickness just happens to you even though you are an experienced "baggeraar," although a scopolamine sticker behind your ear (especially designed for sea sickness) seems to help well. You'll love Iceland. Stunning scenery and lots of horses (you can ride!!!). Have fun!

Black bread was most popular in Russia because just rye growes in our climate , weat is growing in southern regions wich long time be occupied by turkish tribes after fall of Byzantium.. There were many official ethical German people in Russian Empire after Peter 1 and Ekaterine 2 rulership before 1917 revolution, they have their own villages in same regions, maybe they recreate useful black bread in this type of it in that times

Oh, you got SEASICK! I was so worried when I read the title, honestly, choke points like mass transit amd accomodations are the possible transmission points, the testers and ferry personnel as well as the bikers were pretty relaxed it seemed. I know the beer bug is not as widespread over there, but with so many international travellers risk goes up.

“Such a cute language - it’s must be danish” 😉
Sorry, but that was actually Icelandic - however, of coarse we danes are so cute and hasting to say that in my opinion Dutch is such a cute language.
And yes, if youre prone to seasickness don’t read the papers or fiddle with your computer. It “trolls” your brain. It senses the movement but you’re looking at a stable object, the screen or whatever. Go for a walk, preferebly on the outside and look at the horizon and feel the movements under your feet. It stabilizes the brain.

@Nombre Apellido The OED gives the three meanings for cabin; a private room or compartment on a ship, the passenger compartment of an aircraft and a small wooden shelter (the novel was called "Uncle Tom's Cabin"). Hut is is a small simple single-storey house or shelter. That's where the overlap is.
English gets Cabin from French and Hut from German (they're synonyms though use, as I said is based on context).
And, Yes, from Noraly it is totally charming!
