@@BadlandsRifleman Just finished the video. It's interesting to me how chambers are cut different gun to gun. Most .308's I've owned have had pretty long chambers - to the point where it takes loading a 208 ELDM about as long as possible to touch the lands. It sounds like your Ruger may have an exceptionally short throat or tight chamber if "normal" weight 308 bullets are tight. I had a standard 9mm 147 grain load I'd used for years but I had to adjust it when I switched to the M&P 2.0 because the chamber is noticeably shorter in my example compared to any other 9mm in my safe. Anyway, I'm looking forward to how you like the Gen 2 American going forward. It seems like a nice upgrade over the 1st gen. Keep up the good work.
@veriest1 I probably wasn’t clear enough on the video, but my handloads were the only rounds that didn’t chamber good. I took some measurements at home and it seems I didn’t resize the brass enough on some of these rounds. The same bullets that wouldn’t chamber in the Ruger also wouldn’t chamber in my AR-10. All the factory ammo chambered good, including the 175 grain match ammo. I’ve got some other hunting loads to try in the next week so we’ll see how they work. Thanks for watching and commenting, take care!
@flynnryder7798 I think it has a lot of similarities, although the scout rifle purists will no doubt be quick to correct me if I were to call it a “scout rifle.” I did do a series on what I call a “Practical Bush Rifle”, which is a more open and modern approach to a good field rifle. Thanks for watching!
HPG and Ruger American Gen 2 can't go wrong! I have used 168 speer gold dot with the protected soft point for years. They have shot well to excellent in dozens of different guns and always dispatch with impunity. Love your stuff, watch your top knot!
It’s actually a historic wagon trail, and it was an Indian trail before that. I’ve found arrowheads and other interesting artifacts in the hills before. Thanks for watching!
lately im looking to step up from the 5.56/ AR platform to something with alittle more legs and have been envisioning something just like this rifle. .308, short and handy, nothing to crazy but better past a few hundred than the 5.56.
I have a playlist called “Practical Bush Rifle” that you might be interested in. I also built a 6.5 Grendel Ruger Ranch that I feel is a really good compromise between the 5.56 AR and a .308 bolt gun. I did a different sighting setup on that rifle as an experiment and I plan to do a video comparing the two. Personally I prefer the setup on this .308 better. Thanks for watching!
@@BadlandsRifleman i will check it out. ive always been interested in the 6.5 grendel as a way to maximize the ar platform. but these days im more about using ammo that is more readily available like 5.56 and .308.
Great channel hit the sub and like! I cannot give enough praises to the Hill People gear heavy recon. One piece of gear that I always grab for the woods. The practical bolt action I grab is the Savage hog hunter. Great rifle but it has some short comings.
@@BadlandsRifleman The hog hunters detachable magazines is the main issue. Trying to find a second mag is not the easiest and when you do find one they are very pricey. 50 to 60 bucks for a 4rd mag. There are no extend mags to be found. The stock is a little on the cheaper side as well. Other than that it is a solid rifle. But I believe the ranch rifle is superior.
I always love seeing practical bolt actions being carried.
For sure, thanks for watching!

Modern day scout rifle

It’s a great combo for sure! I’ve been tempted to try some gold dot as well, thanks for the info on it. Thanks for watching!
Great day for a pack in and shoot. Nice rifle and nice shooting as well. Lots of data points on that day for sure.
Nate
It was a good day for sure! Thanks for checking out the video!
Great stuff🎉🎉🎉🎉. Pack full of ammo and MRE🎉🎉
Sounds like a party to me!
such a nice little road to walk down

New subscriber, definitely cool production and commentary!
Thank you for the kind words and also for watching! Have a good one!

@mtnbound2764 that’s totally understandable!

Thank you! I looked at the Hog Hunter too, what are some of its short comings?

Yeah magazine prices is why I stay away from some rifle platforms too, thanks for stopping by!
Nice.
Thanks for watching!
i also have never been a fan of water bladders. they're a pita to keep clean and worry about busting in my pack.
I agree. They have their place in the high heat, but you definitely shouldn’t rely on one for your only water carriage though. Thanks for watching!
Since when do they make a .308! I asked ruger for that a year ago😂
I believe it’s new with the gen 2, although I’ve also heard it might be a limited item too.
@@BadlandsRifleman I hope one day they make one that takes ar10 mags just like their 5.46 option
@actually_a_circle I agree, I prefer those over the AICS mags
Superformance not superperformance
