    Long time Hornady ammo user here. Just a few notes on this pod cast…. Seth is my soul brother, in a sense. I am 59 years old and for as long as I can remember, I love short, light guns and I own 4 cans 👍. I started off with a Glenfield 30-30 in the 80’s. Then I purchased two rifles at the same time to start my own collection. 1) Browning A-Bolt Medallion, .270, with the Boss system and 2) Remington Model 7 youth, 7mm-08, 18 1/2” barrel, Walnut. Both are very accurate and reliable, but the Remington is my go to for hunting season. It’s short, light and easily maneuverable. Bought in 1993, these were dream rifles for me. Years later I picked up a Browning A-Bolt Micro Medallion, .308, and it is a beautiful, fast and accurate rifle. I have others, but these are my focus, because not too long after getting the Remington, I found a “new” ammo. That ammo was Hornady Light Mag. In the short barreled rifles, I give up nothing. My 7mm-08 became a freezer filler for just about any hunting situation I could come across on my land. I began purchasing that ammo for every rifle I owned that I could find ammo for. .308, .243, .270 as well as the 7mm-08 and it performed flawlessly out of all of them. Then many years later, the name changed to Superformance. I was a bit uncertain about the ammo, wondering if it changed, got better or worse. I will say that I own several lines of Hornady ammo for different rifles, calibers and needs, like the American Whitetail, Custom, Black, and Superformance and all are great, but for my bolt guns, I stick to the Superformance … a satisfied customer for decades.
    Obviously, the Remington and the Browning Micro Medallion aren’t threaded for suppressors, so I am in the process of buying my first short, light, threaded barrel rifle, likely a Weatherby Compact Hunter, at just over 6 lbs, or another rifle that comes in about 5 lbs, in 7mm-08. I absolutely will praise that calibers performance. Both about 38-39 OAL. I’m excited to get it here, and the only ammo I’ll be starting with is the Superformance…. Unless for some strange reason it becomes the first rifle I’ve owned that wouldn’t group with it…. Though I highly doubt that will be the case. Thanks for great products… and for adding to my success over my decades of hunting. BTW … mainly Whitetail, in Arkansas, is what I hunt. Some bobcat, Hogs and coyote too.
    Take care and good hunting.

      Same here in 6.5 with a Savage Hi Country. I bought some precision hunter, but I will continue to use the American Whitetail 129 for deer. It just shoots so well In my rifle. If I draw an Elk tag however, I think I will try the 143 Precision Hunter.

    It does not matter what lines of ammunition that hornady makes if the product is not available in your local stores here in Oregon and Washington we cannot even find ammunition in common hunting calibers or any magnum calibers other than 300prc ....much less reloading supplies such as brass bullets and primers or powder... and when you do find ammunition it's priced insanely I just saw 30/ 30 win leverevolution ammunition for $75 a box at a local
    Big box sporting goods store but can't find 30.06 or 300win or God forbid 300rum ammunition so no elk cartridges at and hunting season starts this month

    I wish these would come in boxes of 10 for testing ammo to see which product lines work best with a particular gun. I was at the range today doing this. Some lines had 2 in groups, some 2+ with fliers, and 1 had 1 moa. So I've got a few dozen bullets left over that aren't worth much to me. Maybe I'll just have to pull the bullets & use them for reloading.
    I can't get whitetail ammo to group less than 2" @100yds in my guns.

    Does the hornady black have any kind of consideration for faster powders to optimize velocities for 16 to 18 inch barrels? Gets pretty old buying superformance supposedly optimized for short barrels, shooting it out of a 18 inch, and falling 400 fps short of advertised.
    But your frontier ammunition comes so close to advertised velocity I literally think they tested with a 20 or 18 inch barrel

    How about adding to the Black Line some big calibers? Maybe add 458 SOCOM (50AE case with a .458 bullet), 8.6BLK (.338/in a Creedmoor case) and 375 Raptor IMHO (.375 in a modified .308 case) These are all fairly popular big bore AR cartridges, and they all are from components Hornady already has. Thats my 2 cents I think Hogs, Elk, Moose, etc are going to be seeing these much more in the future.

    When is Hornady going to get into the .12" and .14" sub caliber game? Also smokeless muzzleloader bullets could really use some of Hornadys expertise. I used to buy 1000 .284" Amax a year but then it came out that the tips were melting so I had to switch to solid copper bullets. I don't want melted plastic in my meat.

    • @lucascarter1641
      @lucascarter1641 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The melted plastic tips were due to very long distance shooting where the sustained friction of the air would begin to melt the tip. This was fixed the ELD and ELD-X line of bullets for those very long range shots. Plus no matter what polymer tipped bullet you use, you always run the chance of the polymer tip being separated and lodged into the animal somewhere. I've found numerous of them in different deer when processing. Plus a little chuck of plastic in your meat isn't gonna hurt us, when we are all using single use plastic where microplastics get into our foods and drinks. Just my 2 cents.

    • @edwardabrams4972
      @edwardabrams4972 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you think the plastic is bad what about the lead bullet it’s much more toxic then the plastic! You might want to think about going copper.

    One thing that wasn’t mentioned regarding the Custom-Lite maybe something that I’ve experienced on my particular 30-06, 24” sporter barrel.
    1. The accuracy is impressive.
    2. The gap between the initial shot and subsequent follow up shot is negligible. 3 rounds under 0.68.
    The recoil reduction is wonderful. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to find. Is it just that popular or has it just not caught on?

    Are the ELD-X bullets bonded? I haven’t had a single one stay together and make a pass through on a whitetail. Every single one has exploded inside and I’ve had no blood trail what so ever. Granted the deer doesn’t go 20-30 yards but still have no blood. Shots range from 50-150 yards.

    Several times it has been stated that monolithic bullets require 2000fps to open. Is that indeed always the case, even for cartridges like the 45-70, 30-30 and 6.8 SPC that start out at modest velocities? If some of the monolithic bullets are tailored for slower cartridges, it would be helpful to know which ones. Thank you

    • @hornady

    Im anxious to get 6 Creed ammo with a non-expanding fluted bullet for whitetail and great versatility. The hardened bullet busts through shoulder blades; the flutes- at high speed- deliver shock and a large permanent wound cavity for a quick ethical kill. The "high speed" part is paramount. Therefore I"ve been hoping this will be produced by either Underwood or Hornady in the Superformance line, or maybe Weatherby… all known for speed. Any plans for this? I want a lifetime supply.

    re Custom Lite: another application (and maybe I missed it in the discussion) would be simply having less recoil when you don't need the full power of a given cartridge.
    For example, someone who bought a 300 Win Mag for elk, eland or wildebeest could just as well save a little recoil by using Custom Light for whitetail or impala (if it were available in that cartridge).

  • @m444ss
    @m444ss 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I thought they said Custom Lite was available in many cartridges from .243 up to .300 Win Mag.
    Between the air date of this podcast (8/4/22) and today (1/30/25) demand must have dropped or else production can't keep up with demand. Today, the Hornady website only shows four cartridges catalogued in Custom Lite: 243, 7mm-08, 308 & 30-06. (In my case, I was hoping to see 270 Win, and it certainly seems like 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag would be good candidates.)

    If you do not hand load your “own”, ammunition the BEST ammo for you is to find through ALL BRANDS to find what YOUR FIREARM shoots the best. You’ll find that not every firearm “likes”, every single same, type & brand of ammo, contrary as to what Hornady is trying to tell you here. Of course they promote “their”, brand & all forms of it, but the truth is a lot more complex than just picking the “cool”, name. It’s up to you the “shooter”, of said firearm to find regardless of brand, bullet construction, caliber or firearm manufacturer. Of course every ammunition maker will say their ammo is the most consistent, accurate & highest quality but the fact is that not every single caliber, firearm builder & style of firearm will like the currently “popular”, brand or the current #1 seller is. It’s up to YOU, the firearm owner to find the BEST AMMO for YOU!

    Hornady is my most trusted brand! I've switched from .30-06 to 6mm CM this past season as my main whitetail rifle. Many would say it is too light. I figured, "speed kills." I shoot Hornady "Hunter Precision" 6 CM ELD- X, 103 gr. I'm very selective when it comes to deciding to shoot, therefore, I"ve only shot at two deer with the 6 CM. Both were quick kills… the 8pt buck running about 50 yds then dropping dead, the doe never taking a step after a brachial plexus shot (trying to get near instant, humane kills) The only problem, there was no blood trail to speak of with either, despite a small exit hole. I realize that the high shoulder brachial plexus shot placement has a lot to do with no blood trail. But, it there a better offer in Hornady 6CM to enduce blood trails? IDK, involving a penetrator core rod maybe??? Or, was I just spoiled in the performance of the 30-06?

    • @commoncorysense1809
      @commoncorysense1809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Consider how aerodynamics are able to lift an airplane or keep a Formula 1 racing car on the ground. One thing some shooters forget or don’t consider, the wind that comes into play with drift is more critical the closer to the shooter it is. Wind that impacts the projectile in flight as more effect on impact than the wind farther down range. Some folks think that as the bullet slows and is exposed to the wind down range for longer time, it pushes or changes impact more. However it is the opposite, the slightest wind drift effect starting at the muzzle will continue to compound throughout the duration of the -projectile flight till impact. For example if taking a 600m shot, a 5mph crosswind at full value during the first 100m will change impact significantly more than a 10mph crosswind during the last 100m. The crosswinds have different values depending on portion of the flight path that they occur. Lastly and for example; a 600m shot that has a 5mph cross wind during the first 300m will not be negated or come back with a 5-10mph crosswind in the opposite direction during the last 300m.

    Hornady needs to focus more on terminal performance than trajectories. The SST line has terrible terminal performance, yet is pushed by your company as a hunting round. In reality it's decent target round. The Interlock offers the best terminal performance of anything your line. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when the Superformance line dropped the Interlock BTSP in favor of the SST. I gave them a solid opportunity, but the terminal performance was so dismal that I ended up giving it all away and went with a different manufacturer.

Hard quarter away, though middle ribs and lodged under skin in the neck on the off side. 139 gr 7mm 08 at 210yds 2910 muzzle hand load final weight 118 gr and 17 mm max diameter. I use Hornady interlock bullets and handload my own precision ammo. Those factory loads aren't as precise as what I handload because my extreme velocity spreads are single digits, and that's where you find top notch accuracy.
    I use interlock bullets exclusively, which is just about perfect for deer and wild hogs.
    Custom performance is how I roll and you will not get that from factory loaded ammunition.

    • @PatriotPaulUSA
      @PatriotPaulUSA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a hell of a round for whitetail! I am sure their existing ones will work its just they are all a bit too powerful. Hornady has a New 6.5 PRC 130 gr. CX Outfitter, Item #81622 The 6.5 Creed is much more suited unless your at some very long ranges. The 6.5 PRC is more a Magnum of the 6.5C. Its made for long distance, high velocity (western mountain type) hunting. I learned this as a newb when I shot a whitetail with a 300 Weatherby magnum. Its just too much for a whitetail like the 6.5PRC. Hope that helps.

    Maybe they could expand on why they refuse to make any .260 Remington ammunition? I saw it in their catalog once but they no longer as far as I can see offer ANY .260 ammo as it is a direct competitor to the 6.5 Creedmoor. You know, the cartridge that has done nothing that previous 6.5/.264 can do equally or better. They stood on all that came before in the world of 6.5mm cartridge & ammunition makers & picked a cool old name in “Creedmoor”, package it & send EVERY single gun writer to Africa, North American & anywhere else to hunt for publicity junkets & for them to use the 6.5 Creedmoor so they’ll write it’s the “End-All & Be-All”, cartridge in the 6.5mm/.264 cartridge and you need not look any further than to their 6.5 Creedmoor. Am I biased? NO! However, when I get my latest issue of “Shooting Times”, and there is 5-FIVE articles on the 6.5 Creedmoor in 1-ONE magazine?? Yes, I question Hornady’s advertising & free hunting trips to promote & their effort to kill any & all competitors to their beloved 6.5 Creedmoor. All I can say is literally get a “Non-Hornady”, biased reloading manual & compare the 6.5 Creedmoor to other 6.5mm/.264 cartridges & you’ll see Hornady offers nothing of any % worth switching to “their”, cartridge for. In fact, the Creedmoor hamstrings the round and it is not able to perform w/various other bullet weights in the 6.5mm family can & the Hornady round cannot due to a smaller case. Not saying it’s a bad round by no means but a .260 Rem, 6.5x55mm Swede, .264 Mag or even the 6.5 Remington Magnum can’t duplicate or in many cases well exceed the 6.5 Creedmoor.

    • @PatriotPaulUSA
      @PatriotPaulUSA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True but it was designed to be a accurate target round. Most all new cartridges are very small improvements over the older ones these days. Not much has really changed in bullets in 100yrs when you think about it. The 6.5 PRC they made is the same , its just slightly better than other larger 6.5s or the 270 win. If they quit making 260, it means they aren't selling enough of it. That is directly because there isn't enough folks shooting it. Sadly that is the fact. We can all get mad at them or switch calibers /rebarrel to a more popular round. I wish they made .375 Raptor ,6.8 BLK and 458 Socom as they are newer up an coming big bore AR rounds For hogs, elk, bear, moose etc. . Until they have enough demand, I have to wait, or make my own, or buy from smaller makers. I just looked, and Hornady makes a 129 gr superformance in 260 rem, and a 130 gr ELD Match in 260 remington. Hope that helps.

    I've had some great success with ELD-X as well as really good precision from ELD-M. But bringing up the superformance. I tried the superformance match 75gr 5.56 and it was the absolute least accurate ammunition i have ever shot out of my SPR. Printed 2.5-3 MOA groups at 100 yards for a 10 shot group compared to imi 77gr rzrcore being consistent 0.6-0.8 10 shot groups. was a bit disappointing since Every Bolt gun i've shot ELD-X or ELD-M through as well as my AR10 have all shot well into the 0.5 moa territory consistently. Still running ELD-X for my main elk gun, but have avoided superformance since

    I shoot SST's for deer in my .308. They are a little tougher than the old ballistic tips. They rarely exit but the internal damage is rough. Any decent shot through the front half of a deer gets it did. My nephew hammers deer near and far with his single shot .243 with the same bullets.

      Hornady eld match bullets kill deer sized animals dead, with decent terminal performance. I have witnessed others not do the job with FMJs being the worst.
      For meat hunting, the headshot is excellent with the right hunter at the right distance with the right rifle. I don't understand why it is frowned upon here. I guess the results are visually unappealing, but all the usable meat is preserved. Accurate 22-250s and .223s work fantastically in this role. I would bet the 6mm Creedmoor and 6mm ARC would be great in this role as well.
