Loved this game as a kid. I always preferred the quirkier interesting games like this and Maniac Mansion. I used to play with my whole family so we all helped out like a team, even my grandpa offered advice while we played Nintendo. As a family team it was cool because you could get stuck and then dad would take over and figure the hard stuff out. I remember this being my grandpa's favorite game and my grandma's favorite was Maniac Mansion. They always figured out how to do the puzzles. Miss those guys. RIP

The Wii boy and his blob game is absolutely incredible for what it is. It’s fun, challenging, and has a ton of charm. It’s definitely what this game wanted to be.
I had the Wii game as a kid, and I'm very fond of it. It's a nice, heartwarming experience, and the visuals are beautiful. Didn't know much about the NES version until later, and I'm totally grateful the Wii version reached this game's deserved potential.
While I love the Nerd’s more cinematic, over the top episodes, there’s something to be said for these straight-up, honest review episodes too. Takes things back to the past for real.
I actually prefer these episodes. If every episode is a cinematic event, then they all lose their effect. Such episodes should be saved for special occasions.
I prefer these way more. These episodes are the reason why I and many others fell in love with AVGN. I just hate the episodes where its more about the crazy cinematic stuff than the game itself.
As a child, I saw this game at a friend's when I was visiting him. But, unfortunately, he never let me play it ( Later I often fantasized about how I would play it, years later I forgot about it. And after I saw the Wii version, I realized that in my memory it was exactly like that. It's a wonderful game.
I used the Game Genie to explore hidden areas of a lot of NES games, including this one. In this game in particular, there are hidden chambers that were never meant to be part of the game. Inside a bunch of rooms, the programmers hid a poem about the blob turning into a shape to help a kid. You have to fall through the floor in the right place to reach it, but if you don't have the game genie then you just die. I've looked it up but nobody seems to know about this!
I had the sequel, Rescue of Princess Blobette, on the Game Boy in the early 90s. It was equally confusing as a kid, but fun tossing around jellybeans to transform your pet blob. The soundtrack and music cues were exactly the same as the original, big nostalgia 😌
I have a lot of nostalgia for this one, I owned it as a kid. I have a ton of respect for David Crane. Not only did he make this in only in six weeks, he did it with only himself and one other person. Imagine a two person team trying to release a fully playable game like that on a modern console today in six weeks.
This game has that feeling akin to an indie game that gets popular. The type of games with a really cool idea but with less repeatability than a fully fleshed out game.
My grandma had this game for us. I thought only me and my cousins knew about this game until now😊 it was bizarre and very different and so much fun! I'm so glad to hear it has returned.
This was probably my most rented game when I was a kid. And no matter how many times I played it, I never could figure out what I was supposed to be doing.
Great review, but in case you missed the "pun" for the cinnamon jelly beans: cinnamon is the flavor used for "Red Hots" candies, hence a cinnamon jellybean gives you a "Red Hot" blowtorch. I loved the puns used in the transformation choices! But the couple times I tried this game, I lost badly. Definitely a unique experience, which you encapsulated perfectly in your review.
As someone who’s been terrified to eat red Jelly Bellies since I was a kid, I can absolutely verify that a blowtorch is an appropriate transformation for cinnamon-flavored jelly beans.
