@marques As a photographer, I have an issue with calling more in-focus, as the "worse" shot. Just because a camera has a shallow depth of field doesn't make it good. If there are multiple interesting objects at different focal lengths, I'll often stop down my lens to get more of it in focus. Bokeh does not equate to quality.
Oh god, this. People associate the blurry background with a "professional" look, but it purely depends on what you're shooting. If it's a picture where the background is important, my phone defaulting to an artificial bokeh look would just annoy me.
Finally someone said it. Bokeh does not automatically equal quality. There are times you will use it. There are times you will not. It depends on the subject, the moment, there are times you need focus, there are times you need blur on the background (ie. bokeh).
We can saw unnatural bokeh by Huawei & Pixel 4.. so yeahhh they are the worst photos.. another hand samsung camera did a great calculation for the semifinal picture..
@@Wadeaminutemate Yeah it is, but the subject is not, had he taken a different picture results would have been different. He took a photo of a car with a colour map on the side with a huge background and 0 composition for a bokeh photo. It was the subject that dictated the results. For example on the portrait photo I voted for the picture that gave me a good sky shot, decently exposed MKBHD and the colourful chair being fully in focus and with accurate-ish colours. All of the photos were like this.
For some reason the note 10+ had a much more vibrant red (seen on the truck) which I think gave it the edge. Other than that, yeah, essentially the same lol

People look for different things in a camera, the fact that your phone lost doesnt mean its bad, this is just majority vote that doesnt change what you value in a camera. Some people like more contrast some dont, its all up to you and the only thing you can take from this video is what the photos look like on all of these phones and pick your favourite out of these 16. I think that the iphone camera is better than the oneplus because I dont like the colours on it, but majority liked that one, doesnt change anything for me because I still dont like how the photos look.
Even if the public doesn't know what a good photo looks like, MAJORITY are going to buy a phone that takes pictures that they think LOOKS better aesthetically to them. It does not matter to them what the specs are since its the general mass. Phone enthusiasts can pick to their liking. Huawei: puts expensive sensor to make the phone camera more like actual camera Social media: we don't like naturally blurred background Huawei: pikachu face
True. It's always about perception. And it's not unexpected. If you put a color chart in a picture that's being used to rate a camera, it should be in focus. Even if it's not the central subject. The final composition favored the smaller aperture phones, which is probably fine. Most people want vibrant colors and good focus from their phone's default settings, not great bokeh or a shallow depth of field.
@El sie he isn't really criticizing non-experts. It's just that the masses preference was surprisingly different from his own because of his profession. And he probably doesn't talk about perception of photo quality with people that aren't into photography so he had no idea.
There are also times when certain effects look better and some times when other effects look better. Having more in focus looked better in this case. Just because you disagree or know that the blur comes from larger sensors doesn't make the photo taken better. You can take a worse photo on a nice camera and take a nice photo on a bad camera. Not everything that makes a photo good or bad comes down to the perceived quality of the camera
There is a diffrence between what people like and what people think they are like. Most people just think: Sharper und clearer overall focus = better. But companys need to push things like DoF in their phone camera and people will appreciated it more when it is better developed in the next 1-2 years. (Bigger Sensor) The same with TV. Most Friends have pushed "Sharpen Image" to the max. You completetly destory the quality and aesthetic in the image. Also Speakers. The Bigger = the better. Im a graphic artist and oh boy trust me, people will destory your work just because the have no clue about color, sizes, fonts etc The same goes for tech. Sometimes you have to force customers to make a good decision.
K1TZ Remember that the phrase “The customer is always right” basically means that if the customer prefers something worse, it’s not the job of the seller/creator to correct them, but to sell them what they want. If your job doesn’t attract the masses but other less refined work does, even if it’s because “they don’t have a clue”, then the customers don’t have the problem, you do.
@Abdi it's just a side effect, it doesn't last for ever ! still, i'd prefer to operate one eye, then wait for it to recover to move to the other one, i really can't risk loosing both (May God forbid ) ! i wish him quick recovery !
The problem is that people are not judging a technical photography contest, they're just looking at photos and deciding which they prefer. They're not wrong. While the shallower depth of field and higher contrast photos are strictly better from a photography stand point, are they better at showing people what they want to see? It seems not. I suspect that people prefer the brighter and more in focus images are more popular, because you can just see more details in the photo. Most people are going to be using their phone to take photos of people and things, in less than desirable circumstances and want a photo in which they can see their subjects clearly and don't really care about the artistry of the resultant image. Most of the time it is desirable for as much as possible of a photo to be in focus and bright.
@@_Piers_ Well, I think this was done to understand what the masses will chose, and it happened again just like the last year. The most part of the audience will always chose a photo which is more eye catchy and not the one which actually will be better and real looking, and I believe that is completely alright, because most of the people don't see a photo the TECHNICAL way. So they just chose the one which is more eye soothing.

I'm a samsung user, he's either a pixel or one plus user and I can safely say he's wrong with his speculations.
That's tech reviewers. They care about things because they have to use so many phones it doesn't represent normal users. Sometimes their issues are baffling
B Blackwell Idk what you mean by that. Like in the example of the pixel 4 vs the galaxy note where he keeps saying the pixel obviously is a better photo if your competent enough to even know. I think a lot of people just know don’t whats good until someone tells them. I looked at the photo as a video editor and I kept thinking in my head why? It makes no sense how people who know photos understand why it’s a better photo, but why are there people who believe the other photo to be worse. If this was a review of the phone that phone would get deducted points for doing that in comparison. It’s mind blowing to be honest.
Amusis This is true lol. It’s shown here in this example and in life in general. There is a reason why knowledge is important. Such as knowing more about a topic to make much more educated decisions. @@VFXPlug17 So whats interesting to keep in mind is that if you just take a photo and maybe apply a filter like the majority of people thats whats being tested here. But if you care to work and edit photos, we would see a different result. If MKBHD edited all the photos so that they had roughly the same brightness and look, its likely that we would have a different result. I actually picked the 2 samsung phones to go all the way and called the iphone 11 upset. If these were all using manual mode to do it right and edited to look the same as best they could you would actually be testing the camera and not the photo taken. LTT did a video on amature with DSLR vs pro with Phone you might want to watch that to see something like what I described.
His reasoning seems to be "I think this photo looks like it was taken by a more expensive camera therefore it is better" whereas the actual point of the test and the way most people voted was "which photo do I prefer?".
I found this quite interesting as well, Marques is a smart guy but he's asking which photo is better and expecting people to pick which photo was taken by the better camera. These are two completely different questions. Just because I can stop down one my lenses to f1.2 or f1.4 doesn't mean I'm always going to do so, many of my favorite shots from my favorite photographers have everything in the photo in focus. Stopping down to f8-f16 to get all of that detail in the shot is something you learn to do depending on the scene. In fact it's quite a beginner mistake to always keep the aperture wide open and get all that "bokehhh." I love nice out of focus backgrounds as much as the next guy but it's far from a requirement for a good portrait.
I thought this too, if I prefer a picture taken by a smaller sensor where more things are in focus then that's my choice and that's the photo I thought looked better because there's more detail...I don't really care if the larger sensor is "more expensive" or in his opinion "better" just because he prefers photos with blurry backgrounds. Very strange from Marques, obviously his sponsor didn't win.
It is not completely objective, there are still pictures that the majority of people like, with a very small minority who have a very different taste not liking it.
bad baby it is when you break it down. Shows that the majority goes for a less color accurate, "worse" picture. Like the S10e vs the Pixel 4. I voted for the S10e lol. The Pixel 4 is clearly the better picture.
@@yaboiyosef7640 What if that majority are a bunch of regular people that know nothing about photography and that minority are all proffessional photographers? Does that logic apply in this case? Does that make phone a better camera?
I'm really pissed that he kept telling people they're wrong for liking the more clear one, I really don't think the blur effect complimented that image whatsoever. I much prefer is the one with clarity and more detail all around and I'm not sure how that makes it worse. If he was saying one had worse blur than the other then sure it's worse but it doesn't really seem like the second one had any blur effect at all. It just looks way better in my opinion. It's a good shot that doesn't buff out all the detail for the sake of an unnecessary blur effect

Because some scenarios are trickier than others. Regardless this is very fun and entertaining to watch and since today I will be looking forward for the 2020 edition!
I think if you want test all ''some scenarios are trickier than others'', the camera test will never end and no smartphone in that 1vs1 win the battle because there's always another scenarios, so that's why just pick one scenario and make the decision, you simply just can't satisfy everyone.
8:17 Yeah we generally like out of focus backgrounds when it's appropriate in the composition of the shot. Just because the plane of focus is wide in shot doesn't mean it's a less interesting or poorer composed shot, in general.
DSLR probably won't win just because they don't normally do hard post-processing. The images would be more neutral with less saturation, people wouldn't pick'em

DSLR although shits on phones for dynamic range, it takes manual editing to retrieve that info. It’s be awesome if they threw in a photo that had light editing.

I don't think people like things in focus...I think they just want to specifically see that Rubik's cube in focus because it's so colorful...and close to the center of the picture. So seeing something an image that offers so much visual stimulation, when it's blurred, is a bit disappointing. If it were on the periphery of the photo, and smaller, people obviously wouldn't want it to be in focus...
Your argument is completely subjective. In this case the bokeh is intentional. So he's rating the cameras ability to create accurate bokeh.

Mkbhd should publish a research paper
@El sie he isn't really criticizing non-experts. It's just that the masses preference was surprisingly different from his own because of his profession. And he probably doesn't talk about perception of photo quality with people that aren't into photography so he had no idea.
There are also times when certain effects look better and some times when other effects look better. Having more in focus looked better in this case. Just because you disagree or know that the blur comes from larger sensors doesn't make the photo taken better. You can take a worse photo on a nice camera and take a nice photo on a bad camera. There is a diffrence between what people like and what people think they are like.
Most people just think: Sharper und clearer overall focus = better.
But companys need to push things like DoF in their phone camera and people will appreciated it more when it is better developed in the next 1-2 years. (Bigger Sensor)
The same with TV. Most Friends have pushed "Sharpen Image" to the max. You completetly destory the quality and aesthetic in the image.
Also Speakers. The Bigger = the better.
Im a graphic artist and oh boy trust me, people will destory your work just because the have no clue about color, sizes, fonts etc
The same goes for tech. Sometimes you have to force customers to make a good decision.
K1TZ Remember that the phrase “The customer is always right” basically means that if the customer prefers something worse, it’s not the job of the seller/creator to correct them, but to sell them what they want.

@@wintermelon4020 pretty sure most smartphone users and people that voted don't know much about photography
I'm really pissed that he kept telling people they're wrong for liking the more clear one, I really don't think the blur effect complimented that image whatsoever. If he was saying one had worse blur than the other then sure it's worse but it doesn't really seem like the second one had any blur effect at all. It just looks way better in my opinion. Not really, based on photography, most of the choices were completely based off of brightness, saturation and focus. Essentially most consumers like y'all just want a bright contrasty all-focused image instead of an actually good looking photo.

I love these video, how iphone is crushed every time, just to show that our bias is about the brand and not the quality itself
Maybe people choose their phone based on more than the more popular camera?
@@DrewAllen maybe
@@DrewAllen but thats literally not the case? literally every iphone user says that their phones are better cuz their cameras are better
@@flakron2489 "Literally" haha. I don't even say that. So "literally" not every iPhone user says that. most iPhone user I know don't say that. Most say they like iMessage better, or they're already Apple users for everything else and like it. Many, many reasons beyond the camera. Sorry man.
@@DrewAllen but iphone doesn't offer great specs like android does
iPhone users after first round: *clicks off*
Julian Simoes I don’t think any iPhone user would be upset at this
The average person always go for the brighter and more vibrant photos rather than accuracy or quality
After last years blind test showing that to be true I don’t think too many people didn’t expect the Samsung’s to be on top as they always pump up the colors in their default photos
If this test was only shown to professional photographers the results would be quite different and I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Samsung phones would have been eliminated 1st
It all depends on who is seeing the photo
And yeah, the iPhone did kinda bomb that first photo with the bluish shift
Also have to remember any of these phones could take just about an identical photo when adjusting the settings
He even showed the iPhone photo was great when he corrected the blue shift
The Samsung’s can be adjusted to be more color accurate
Etc etc
These were just default photos
The main takeaway from this is that the average person and a photographer see photos in very different ways
And that all of these cell phones have amazing cameras, even the midrange phones
While the cheaper ones may not have as many features, the main camera in all are great (and was the only camera tested on each phone)
Its great how good cell phone cameras have gotten in the last couple of years
While the may not be quite as good as a DSLR they are getting very close
And when just posting on social media where the photos get compressed a cell phone photo is just as good
@@dragon81heart ok fair enough

Do all people who go through lasek surgery deal with that?
Mandela Kyubwa I went through the operation 2 weeks ago (Lasek), I have had no issue like that.
Im not sure, but I think Marques did Lasik, not Lasek. Lasek is more safe tho but a tad bit more expensive and with newer technology.
At least in sweden. Some places here doesn’t even do Lasik anymore. :)
Me with smile done 2 months ago laughing .... :))
He's got that Sharingan sight
Watch it in 360p 😂
I don't think people like things in focus...I think they just want to specifically see that Rubik's cube in focus because it's so colorful...and close to the center of the picture. So seeing something an image that offers so much visual stimulation, when it's blurred, is a bit disappointing. If it were on the periphery of the photo, and smaller, people obviously wouldn't want it to be in focus...
Or, if instead, you put a stapler in place of the Rubik's cube....people would have preferred it blurred.
This is true, only photographers or graphic designers would understand.
I have to agree with this, however, it was a colour chart not a rubik cube
yeah, I was about to write that xD
Very well said...
Exactly. If he wanted people to prefer the picture with blurred background then his picture composition was terrible. Bokeh is great when it makes sense, but the car picture was a very poor example of a picture where you'd want to have that effect.
Newbs: "oh, so blurry means better"
Next year's winner is the "Nokia 3210"
Photographers: What are you doing??!
Its Based On People’s Choice Maybe Many Of His Followers Are Blind To choose
😂i don't know why but every year he forces us to like dull images and that fake smartphone out of focus doesn't really look good..
And iphone 11 images but so blueish this year..yukk
The other thing, is that some people don't understand, nor can identify the difference between motion blur, and focal blur.
@@SatnamSingh-mx2uc the thing is, that those "dull" images may look more "dull" but are actually more accurate and true to life than the overexposed and oversaturated images taken by for example Huawei phones. That's why a real photographer is more likely to prefer a photo taken by a Pixel 4 rather than a photo taken by the Mate 30

yep, really agree with those tweets
@@ترياق-ع7و no no i was asking what actually happened in twitter to make that glitch
In terms of the background blur, my theory is that since you had "distracting" objects in the frame, people are more "curious" and would have rather have most, if not all, the objects in focus.
Meanwhile, if you remove any distractions from the background and have the subject in focus, my guess is that people would vote for the photo with a proper bokeh. Just my thoughts.
Very true. Those color swatches being blurry was not a good look.
True
I agree
but they did that on purpose to test the camera. you call it "distraction" cause in only has different colors which can disturb our vision and judgement from the red car but how can you judge a camera if the photo only has one color all over the frame? if he put something as red as the car it wouldn't have made any sense cause the phone hardware couldn't process it in a way that could let us test them
In a nutshell I expect everything in my view finder to be in focus unless I stated not so via optimal camera modes
