Fun fact. My dad played Charles Dance’s hand double in this movie. Any close up shot of his character performing a medical procedure is my old man’s mitts
They mentioned on their last podcast wanting to do 90s sci-fi Caravan of Garbage for Demolition Man, Fifth Element, Timecop and Starship Troopers for example.
the theatrical cut was choppy but fincher filmed a great movie. the story is easy to follow, the music phenomenal, the acting superb and the cinematographer is fantastic. I love alien 3. these gripes with killing of newt and hicks is weak. at the time it wasn't that bad because Sigourney was the huge star then and we knew it was HER story and the 3rd operatic ending was so fitting for her tragic character
David Fincher was treated like shit on the set of the movie by the producers and said in an interview "I rather slash my wrists than work on another ALIEN films after the way I was treated." He even got pissed off at the producers for releasing the teaser trailer that was supposed to have the film taken place on Earth, which never happened.
If memory serves, he was especially disappointed because the Earth is mostly made of water, which when viewed from afar, has a blue colour, and given the nature of the aliens to harvest victims for their nests, the studio originally wanted to call the film Blue Harvest.
Everyone always talks about how sad it is that Newt and Hicks are killed off, but I always feel the most sad for Tywin. The guy with all of his past faults, was sort of becoming a love interest to Ripley, providing her with a bit of solace and optimism after losing 2 people she deeply cared for. He seemed to genuinely care about her wellbeing… only to then get brutally killed before he even knew wtf was going on. RIP Space Tywin
@@godmaentertainment4375 I'm mostly glad she died, mostly. Seriously, though, if they hadn't have killed her, they would have been stuck recasting her, and that would have been bad in its own right. For all we know, the Fox execs might have even pushed for a popular early 90s child star. Imagine Newt as played by, say, Anna Chlumsky from My Girl or Alisan Porter from Curly Sue. Plus, as horrific as the autopsy scene is, it's not half as bad as exposing a nine-year-old to a planet full of vicious predators (and not the fun kind with the cloaking devices and the dreadlocks). The alien would be the least of her worries.
@@JohnDenverAirport Yes, that was the intent. But for some reason, your reply made me imagine the autopsy scene playing out a little differently... Ripley: "The chest. Open the chest." (Newt's eyes bolt open. She turns and glares at Ripley.) Newt: "I'm dead, all right? Can you go now?"
The way Fox treated Fincher really does beggar belief. They kept demanding to know why the film was taking so long to make when they forced him to start shooting with about 50 pages' worth of script, and then every time he asked for resources that he would need to finish the project they gave him between half and one fifth of what he asked for, seemingly out of spite. It's like they were actively trying to make it a disaster
To be fair he was a first time director that was taking days to film a character walking through a door. It's all very well sitting in 2024 saying let the Academy Award winning director cook, but they were watching the Director of the Vogue music video piss their money up the wall for a whole year with nothing to show for it. They had reason to panic
@@bobson3014 he wasn't farting around trying to get the perfect shot for days on end though, they literally told him to get going without a completed script
@@ReXtion88 I'm not saying it's not their fault for hiring the worst possible director for that situation, but now he had the job and they all had to deal with that latest of many bad choices made in this process. Plus he was farting around trying to get the perfect shot for days on end. He was just doing it under the least appropriate circumstances possible.
@@bobson3014 but by definition working for the perfect shot isn't "farting around". He's a perfectionist and if the studio didn't like his speed, they could have just fired him. He was apparently the third director to come aboard to make that film. The studio kneecapped themselves.
Studio interference was common back in the day. Now they give even first time directors alot of creative freedom after realizing they can choke the creative spark from the film. You get some real gems like Avengers end game and Barbie but also get some turds.
I personally think that the loss of Newt and Hicks adds to the ending. She's lost her friends, she's lost her job, she's lost her daughter, and adoptive daughter and her lover and now the Alien is going to take the only thing she has left, her life and so she makes the ultimate sacrifice to finally destroy the alien and deny the company that has never given a shit about her or anyone else.... You know.... before Alien Resurrection undoes it all.
To be fair, I wouldn't say Alien Resurrection really undoes it. Ripley is dead and never coming back. In Resurrection, it's a clone that does act distinctly different from the original, and her sacrifice did prevent Weyland Yutani from acquiring the xenomorph. It took over a century for another group to extract the xeno DNA.
The loss of Newt and Hicks does way more to damage the ending of Aliens than Resurrection damages Alien 3. It's just also a really goofy, silly movie to follow up with.
@@whiffyclarkeWhy does it damage the end of Aliens??? It adds to it. Burke infected them in order to get a sample back to Earth. They died in a crash. Where’s the damage? There’s no character assassination. There’s no undoing of any events. So what if two characters didn’t make the transition into the next chapter? Hicks was barely important anyway, and the only purpose Newt served was to make Ripley’s character motivation be based on motherhood, which was just something James Cameron came up with, because all his female characters have to be stand-ins for the women in his life. Ripley isn’t a mother, she’s a survivor.
The Alien endures and kills more people where her final sacrifice has wiped out the last known source of them. Plus Alien Resurrection also kills off The Company off screen which is an even worse sin as they were the real bad guy of the franchise. The one good thing they could have done is have WY finally get their prize and it bites them in the ass but instead they disbanded WY off screen for what reason? So Joss could have a gag in his script that they got bought out by Walmart?
@@eyespy3001Burke TRIED to infect them… the huggers never got Ripley or Newt in Aliens. In fact; Newt’s autopsy in 3 proves that she didn’t get implanted.
I saw Alien 3 when it came out, and that scene made everyone in the theater laugh out loud, totally undermining the tension and horror. When it was broadcast on TV they removed the swearing, accidentally improving the movie.
"Right, we need backing music whilst we talk about this sci-fi horror movie, what have we got?" "Spryo the Dragon, Artisans Homeworld theme. Scariest shit i ever heard." "...Perfection."
Regarding the CGI. THere is only ONE CGI shot of the Alien in Alien 3, despite what people think. Thats teh head bursting from cold. The rest is actually model shots, that just happen to look like bad CGI. Look it up.
So kinda the same situation as The Thing prequel? That's still one of the movies that disappoints me most, they had all these models and puppets that had to get covered up with CGI.
@@stevencooper564 The Thing prequel had all the work done and then covered up, Alien 3 just looked like bad CGI but it was real (according to that guy)
@@JohnnyTightIips his comment is kind of confusing. While it was real models you can tell they combined the shots similar to green screen and it looks terrible
nah, totally disagree, he may have been far better than they used him, or they gave him dumb lines but he was nothing special in this movie, a wishy-washy totally unbelievable bad guy. He filled the part of Parker cause it was mandatory for these movies now.
i honestly kinda love the bleakness of this movie if you're treating it as the final chapter in a self-contained trilogy. obviously it sucks that Newt and Hicks die, but i see it in that the alien just keeps coming back and taking things away from Ripley. it's her own personal demon, constantly coming back to haunt her, and for what? JUST because she survived the first film? it's a super depressing movie, yeah, and i think that works for it, especially with the ending in mind. it's tragically poetic and sadly cynical, but it works for me from this perspective.
Same. I love this movie, and I have never understood the hate it receives. It’s incredibly atmospheric. The creature FX were done by Chris Cunningham, who went on to direct some iconic music videos by Bjork and Aphex Twin. And the ending, as you said, is pure poetry. The whole Hicks and Newt thing… I also never understood the whole uproar over that either. Hicks was cool in Aliens, but he served no purpose to the greater story. Newt’s only purpose was to drive home the motherly aspect of Ripley, which was just shoehorned into her character by James Cameron (because he can only write women in a motherly or spousal way). Ripley was allowed to be a human woman in this, not just a “mother.”
@@eyespy3001 The reaction against the deaths comes from people who saw Aliens first, and thought it was just a fun action adventure. They just don't want Alien to be a horror franchise.
When it was the conclusion of a trilogy, it was perfect. Ripley ends the threat of W-Y getting the alien once and for all; big chap killed/lost in space, hive and engineer ship destroyed, queen killed/lost in space, dog alien killed and queen chestburster destroyed. Ripley died to save humanity. It was poetic.
I know this movie gets a lot of flak. But I love it. It's a nasty gritty uncomfortable suspense film, and drives home the point that against this creature, there is no victory. That's powerful.
I'm an Alien 3 apologist. I really like this movie. When my wife and I first started getting to know each other, we both said we loved Alien 3 and I knew at that point I was probably going to marry this woman. And I did! Not because of that, obviously. But I certainly noted it!
I like it too. I saw it when it came out. The only problem was the scene in the cafeteria where the alien graps someone and the guy says "Fuck!". It made the audience laugh. When it was shown on TV they removed the swear and actually improved the scene.
@@tenofdiamonds6440 dude, no need to apologise .... this film rules, and we know it. And if you meet a lady, that shares your love for this film? Yeah man, it's for life. Nice one.
@@JohnDenverAirport ha! Thanks, man. Been together 17 years so I guess it worked! Our other film we love that lots of people hate is The Life Aquatic. We bonded over our love for those films. 😂
Bonus Alienivia: Lance Henrikson was killed by a Terminator and a Predator but NOT by an Alien. The Queen tore him in half but this didn't "kill" him. Therefore, only Bill Paxton got the Sci-Fi Death Trinity. If you read this far and don't care, that's on you.
Alien 3 is troubled but deeply underrated imo. I don’t mind Newt and Hicks being killed right from the bat, this movie has balls and isn’t afraid to be hopelessly bleak. Not everyone gets a happy ending in a horror franchise
I don’t mind something going for the bleak route in a story, the problem for me is that for this series in particular, the bleak route made for a MUCH less interesting story than what we likely would have had going the opposite direction, especially with what cameron had proposed with the pseudo family unit idea. The idea of further developing the relationships between the survivng characters from alien 3 as they deal with a new threat is just flat out more interesting to me than what we got.
I like the film too and it has it's problems but I love the brown, rusty look of the Dog Alien and the whole colour aesthetic for this movie. Also, Charles S. Dutton as Dillon is the standout in the movie and he steals the film from Ripley in my opinion.
I just watched it for the first time, I'm genuinely confused what redeeming qualities it has? It was actively intensely boring. Never felt any tension, never cared even slightly about any character (couldn't believe they killed off the one character they were putting any effort into with Charles Dance), no interesting action scenes (the endless running around in the maze for 15 minutes at the end was absolutely PAINFUL). I'm so confused what there even is to like?
Should have also highlighted Charles Dutton and his fantastic speech near the end ("I ain't much for begging!") and Elliot Goldenthal's wonderful score. The dourness is kind of the point; you either like it or you don't. It's a terrible world, the Alien is a real SOB and that's why Ripley needs to sacrifice herself to end it. Yes, it's a huge tonal shift from Aliens.
Strangely the assembly cut is one of my fave alien movies. It’s dark, nihilistic and has lots of horror, that scene wheeze the alien peers behind the guy picking up the flair was epic. The theatrical release was terrible though.
Genuinely surprised there was no mention of how Charles S. Dutton absolutely CRUSHED with his speeches in this movie. Talk about a man that can pull off a proper call to action!
Alien 3 is incredibly underrated. Actually, I even think it's fucking amazing! It's ballsy as fuck. First, it kills off Hicks and Newt. Then, there's the grim and sad scene where Ripley forces herself to watch an autopsy of Newt. After that, Clemens, Ripley's love interest, is killed. And at the end, Ripley kills herself to kill the alien queen. All this is incredibly grim and ballsy. Amazing direction by Fincher. Another masterpiece music score just like the other older Alien movies, this time by Elliot Goldenthal. Mindblowing production design. And perhaps Charles Dutton's best performance. What's not to love?
People only disliked it because thry compared it to aliens. I think it had the best looking and scariest xenomorph in the entire franchise and the best most haunting atmosphere. I even think it's the scariest in the whole franchise. The hate for it is people just following whatevers popular.
I got some additional trivia, I was recently working on set with stunt coordinator and performer Nick Gillard, who told of earning the record on this film for longest fire burn without air at around 2m30. It wasn’t a record he was going for either, he was supposed to do half and his coworker was to take over, he wasn’t on set and Fincher was pressuring them to get the shot so he said screw it and did the whole thing. He was bloody cooked mate! What a legend.
Actually, never thought abut it, but my gosh, that indeed makes IMMENSIVE amount of sense! I mean, we start with the original "Alien", then Ripley's ship falls onto this prison and then the company takes her from Fury and then we get "Aliens". Obviously, we would need some alterations at this point, like removing any "Aliens" characters from "Aliens 3" 'cause of the timeline and Ripley shouldn't die in that one, and maybe changing the dog alien into a young queen (should look different from the big chap, but not as big and gorgeous as queen was in "Aliens" just to not spoil the moment of huge revelation in that one). And you know what, it would be really better in every aspect of it 'cause Ripley will get her arc of finding true piece after not only losing her team but after being in prison for some time, and after all of that she would find a man to love and a daughter to raise. It's amazing how it amazingly works, just like if we all are living in alternative timeline and that one is actually the original timeline)).
They mentioned on their last podcast wanting to do 90s sci-fi Caravan of Garbage for Demolition Man, Fifth Element, Timecop and Starship Troopers for example. So it seems you might get what you've been asking for sooner than later. :)
Alien 3, especially the Assembly Cut has such incredible performances in it. I can watch that movie so many times, and I never get bored because of the amazing cast.
I was massively disappointed (& depressed) on the initial theatrical showing. However, its really grown on me over the years, especially with the Assembly Cut - the look, feel and soundtrack are fantastic.
@@Paul_1971 I also really love the nihilism of it. I think it was a risky thing to do. But many critics don't seem to acknowledge that Weaver signed up for that script. In interviews, when she was talking about how raw, dark and terrifying the movie was, it was that script she was talking about. Like it or not, it was a bold. And it took all the crap that was being perpetrated by Fox and made something kinda profound with it. I hope Fincher has come around a bit more to the film over the years.
I like alien 3, neither of these versions are my favourite tho, I might be wrong but I think there's a third version, if there isnt then I feel like there is a much better cut still to be made by just blending these two together and just using the best parts of both versions Regardless alien 3 is one of the most important movies in the franchise because it is the movie that establishes one of the most interesting and groundbreaking pieces of lore surrounding the alien, the fact that they take on physical traits of their host, people like to write off this movie as if it's all garbage and then glaze stories which feature T-Rex xenomorphs or predaliens or gorilla aliens as if they don't owe everything to a movie often cited as a low point for the franchise This movie also perfectly recaptures the dark, miserable lovecraftian (cruel and unforgiving universe) tone that the first movie had which was lost (even if it was deliberately) in James cameron's aliens by not only opening with the deaths of two fan favourite characters from the previous movie but then going so far as to show us in excruciating detail the autopsy of a child followed by the rest of the movie, the death of a dog, an attempted SA, Ripley turned host, etc. I think a lot of the hate this movie gets isnt actually about the quality of the movie, it's hate directed at the fact that the movie is unpleasant but that was never an accident, it was a choice
It'd be awesome if the community could mash together the best elements of both and make their own cut of the film. There'd probably be ferocious arguments over whether to use the dog or the ox though.
@@thatgamingkiwi1630 I'd use the dog if 8t were up to me, personally I've never understood why people say the ox is better, it doesn't make as much sense as the dog, the alien in alien 3 is smaller and faster, which are traits it could reasonably gain from a dog, if it came out of an ox then surely it would be larger than a regular alien and would have horns I assume people prefer the ox because no one wants to see a dog die but I think that's just part of the movies dark tone
Have tons of awful things happened doesn't make it a good dark miserable lovecraftian movie. The kills was offscreen the attempted sa was just weird and unnecessary
While watching the end of this, I suddenly thought of a good idea for a new Alien movie: an all-android group of soldiers are sent in to fight xenomorphs somewhere (eg to clear another infected colony). Android soldiers are used because they can't incubate new aliens, but some of the android characters start to question their mission (eg maybe there's a rogue faction of androids who decide that the colony should be a place for free androids to live once they've "liberated" it).
Or they decide that the Aliens are a great form of protection and the two groups come to an uneasy alliance. They could occasionally bring human ships to the aliens for food or use aliens as weapons, infiltrating human colonies.
There's at least one comic series about androids sent in to fight aliens because they can't incubate. If I remember correctly, the androids don't really want to do it, but are promised their freedom/a safe haven if they do.
@@Alfje17it’s Aliens: Defiance, where a colonial marine is sent in with a bunch of androids for a salvage mission. Once Weyland-Yutani confirm it’s xenomorphs there, they retask the androids and want them to bring a sample back to Earth. The marine, Zula Hendricks (who now has become a mainstay in the comic lore), and an android called Davis go AWOL to prevent the company from bringing back the live xenomorph samples. I don’t think they outright say that that’s why they send the androids, to avoid impregnation, but I think it’s implied. The comic is really good, great art - a good modern Alien comic that at the time linked to a lot of the lore so it’s a decent jumping on point, but I don’t know how much of it still counts now that Marvel have the comic rights. It also features Amanda Ripley in a few little cameo roles throughout the comic!

Alien 3 is such a great film that gets unnecessary + undeserved + unjustified hate It's actually an underrated gym,one day I'm going to be making a video defending the movie and giving it the dignity it deserves
There's a lot of great style and good ideas in Alien3. I've always liked it. But the theatrical version is incoherent. The assembly cut is a good addition to the franchise.
The assembly cut is overrated (Maso himself complained the first hour lacked tension). It adds a lot of stupid stuff and removes stuff that worked. And remember that Fincher was not involved in the "assembly" version, but he was involved in the theatrical edit. If you're all about respecting Fincher then you should respect the version he released over the version cobbled together by the studio for a special edition DVD.
"They could do a back to back sequel situation, they could alternate. And then the next guy would have to write the next movie without having seen the previous movie. Just guess at it." I was expecting a Last Jedi - Rise of Skywalker dueling banjos visual gag at any moment.
Alien 3 was thee best monster movie of the 90s. Religious prisoners against the alien, and how those themes translated into redemption and a literal sacrifice in the face of the true unstoppable monster of nihilism, set against one of the series's best, all time classic soundtracks. Dance, Glover, Postlethwait and Dutton were all brilliant in their limited roles. The film's biggest sin is not continuing the story of Newt and Hicks and it's still largely overlooked and underrated as a result. Fincher caved to studio pressures in disowning this but the truth is that he made one phenomenal ride from an impossible production. And that iconic shot of the alien-Ripley face off is testament to its underlying but enduring brilliance. It's hard sci-fi at its finest. If we can't get a Blomkamp sequel to Aliens, then Alien 3 is a grand way to round off the trilogy.
Honestly, I didn't mind this film. It's definitely not great, but it was decent. Killing Hicks and Newt was a huge mistake, though. Them staying in cryo, actually would've been a great move. This is way better than Aliens 4 IMO, which I thought was trash outside of a few good scenes.
it took shear balls of steel to kill off 2 beloved characters...something only GoT has done in recent memory. I love Alien 3 for this...its dark and depressing and part of how life works...random deaths just happen even to main characters...no one is safe...no one hears you scream!
Super underrated movie. Love how dark it was, great setting/ambiance. Killing hix & newt between films was brutal in the perfect way. Loved that this one went back to the horror roots of the first film, and it's a perfect end for the franchise & Ripley...
So, I like Alien 3. Yes it has issues, yes it's nowhere near as good as Alien or Aliens. And of course I'm saddened that Fincher hated working on it so much. But the end result, the Assembly cut especially, I do genuinely like. I think it's the sense of dread throughout the whole movie. It's a good continuation of the horror of the first one and the high adrenaline terror of the second. And I'd argue it has the best soundtrack. Adagio is a particular favourite. I get why Fincher hates it, I understand that, but if even half the things we've heard about its production is true then the fact we got something watchable is actually a testament to his directing. The LV-426 Reddit page often has people posting about them liking the movie, and I hope he does some day see that there are people who like his work here.
To say that Aliens (1986) equals or perhaps even surpasses the first part is a madman. A lesser mad, though still a mad, is to say so about Alien 3 (1992). But wait, has anyone ever said that? Well, precisely no, because fans of Alien 3 are intelligent people, unlike fans of Aliens. To be clear, I'm saying that about the fans of Aliens who despise Alien 3. I myself love second part but I love Alien 3 just as much, or maybe a little more... In the case of Aliens and Alien 3, I mean the extended versions of course.
I love both Aliens and Alien 3 However, Alien 3 gets too much unjustified and undeserved hate, people don't hate Alien 3 for what it is, they hate it for what it is not People wanted another Action + Sci-Fi film, they wanted another happy ending They wanted the adventures of Ripley,Newt,Hicks, and Bishop However, the movie went in a direction they didn't want it to go,which is to go back to its roots I'll admit that Aliens is a masterpiece of a movie, however people who hate Alien 3 because of how dark it is completely miss the point of the film,it's supposed to be dark, depressing, isolated, hopeless, despair, sad, scary, atmospheric People also miss the symbolism, poetic, redemption message, and the overall message of the movie People forget that this film was supposed to be the closing movie. (Before Fox decided they wanted more cash and decided to release the biggest mistake of a film Alien Resurrection) this movie was not only about the end of our beloved protagonist Ripley, but the end of the Alien franchise, before they started to milk the franchise for Cash
I actually enjoy Alien 3. BUT, I do wish Hicks and Newt would have lived. In fact, I think Newt being the one having an alien inside her and Ripley NOT telling her would have been interesting. Then have them BOTH dive into the furnace as Ripley cradles her and holds both her and the queen in place until they die.
This movie is not garbage. It's not perfect. But it has a very good performance by Sigourney Weaver as well as Charles Dance, Charles Dutton and Lance Henriksen. The scenes between Sigourney and Charles Dance are extremely well done. They have a real connection together. Sigourney shines in all the Alien films. Watch this for her if for nothing else.
Even though James Cameron didn’t come back for this one, they still wanted to try and capture some of his aesthetic. Unfortunately, without the eyes of the man himself, they just couldn’t crack the aura that Aliens had. So they scrapped all the concept art and shots where they tried to recreate the trademark Cameron blue. This resulted in the working title of the film being Blue Harvest. Coincidentally, this was also the working title of Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi.
19:04 There are 2 different scripts that William Gibson did: the less action-packed one, which the comic & audio drama are based on. And the more action packed one that was more like James Cameron's "Aliens". Where there was more gun and more marines. Hicks leads a squad of marines to take out a queen and one point in the script. It was the better script; it would have been better than the Alien 3 we got.
ALIEN 3 has a lot of problems but I think it has a lot of redemptive qualities as well. I watched the four original ALIEN films a lot as a young’un and I have a lot of affection for all of them, yes, even RESURRECTION
Dear Mr Fincher, even tho they gave you a horrible time trying to make this movie, somehow, you made my favorite movie in the whole franchise. You gave us sigourney weavers best performance and the most Uber non royal alien to date. You also gave us a much earned slap back to reality. Because if Cameron and others wanted a family movie then they totally missed what this universe is supposed to be. Unforgiving and nightmarish. There are no happy endings here in a reality that was inspired by bio mechanical terrors via HR Giger
I know you're engaging in a bit of apostrophe, but I find it funny to imagine Fincher hating this film so much that he would scour TH-cam comments just to shoot down anyone who says something nice about it. (Not that he likely has such time on his hands.)
I walked out of the theater as Ripley checked Newt's body for any sign of alien contamination. Watching on cable years later, I realized I made the right decision.
The only thing I don't like about the Assembly cut or how is it called, is the ending where Ripley just dives into the furnace and that is it. I love the part where the Queen bursts out of her and she sorta speak embraces it or holds it close to her so it can't escape anywhere.
I kinda liked the recent what if comic where Paul Reiser’s character Burke against all odds survived his encounter with the xenomorph in Aliens and lucked his way to the drop ship and onto the Sulaco without anyone noticing. He then agrees to take the fall for the colony’s destruction for guaranteed employment. He is also the one responsible for ejecting Ripley’s compartment onto the prison planet in Alien 3.
Alien 3 isn't terrible, obviously compared to the first 2 it doesn't hold a candle, but compared to Ressurection or anything after, it's almost a masterpiece
“Start the next one out with some real bad vibes”. That really is the thing, right off the bat you’re viscerally dealing with the deaths of Hicks and Newt. Where do the stakes go from there?
Ralph Brown, Paul McGann... if they'd gotten Richard E Grant it would've been a Withnail and I reunion. Maybe have Uncle Monty as the company man at the end. 'Hmmm my lovely boys, tell me, where is Lt Ripley and her delightful little offspring?'
My friend is a vietnam vet, and to this day he tells me that the most accurate depictions of Marines in any movie he's ever seen is the drop ship scene in Alien 3. The way each character acts is a dead ringer for someone my friend knew, especially the fact that one guy was always sleeping (regardless of how insane the environment was). He told me Marines all have the ability to sleep on command in any situation lol
I genuinely think the extended version of Alien 3 is brilliant. Sure, it doesn't stand up well against the first two, but Best Sci-Fi Horror and Best Sci-Fi Action are hard benchmarks to live up to. All the stuff about horrible criminals finding religion and the way Gollick seems to worship the alien, is a really interesting new take on the franchise. Also, two words: Charles. Dance.

Jim Emerson has a great analysis of the assembly cut that shows finches modeled the film after JEAN D’ARC, the old French silent film. If you watch it as a tragedy/passion play rather than a horror, it comes to life a bit. I genuinely like the assembly cut now
The directors/assembly cut of this film is far from terrible and contains some excellent elements even if as a whole it doesn’t succeed - it’s also significantly better than Resurrection. What Fincher managed to scrape together from the chaos is miraculous too.
Chris Cunningham, who directed some of the craziest music videos for Aphex Twin, Bjork, and even Madonna, worked on many of the creature FX in this movie, including that Bishop animatronic
There’s a theory by Rob Hill of Bad Movie Bible, he did a commentary of the film with Oliver Harper and suggests maybe it was Sigourney Weaver who wanted Charles Dance and Hicks dead so they wouldn’t steal the spot light from her. Which doesn’t seem too crazy, all actors want as many close ups as they can get haha

Considering they are prisoners, that might be intentional.
@@sooperd00p Ahh, I didn't cotton on to that!
David Fincher was treated like shit on the set of the movie by the producers and said in an interview "I rather slash my wrists than work on another ALIEN films after the way I was treated."
He even got pissed off at the producers for releasing the teaser trailer that was supposed to have the film taken place on Earth, which never happened.
He seems to have the time of his life at Netflix who greenlight all the projects no other studio would
If memory serves, he was especially disappointed because the Earth is mostly made of water, which when viewed from afar, has a blue colour, and given the nature of the aliens to harvest victims for their nests, the studio originally wanted to call the film Blue Harvest.

RIP Space Tywin
so the death of a little girl, didn't move you or puo?
@@godmaentertainment4375 No, because she was not a distinctive character and it happened off-screen. It feels generally icky, but not devastating.
@@MAMoreno I read the second use of the word "mostly" in your comment in Newt's voice. I hope you put that in there for that reason.
@@JohnDenverAirport Yes, that was the intent. But for some reason, your reply made me imagine the autopsy scene playing out a little differently...
Ripley: "The chest. Open the chest."
(Newt's eyes bolt open. She turns and glares at Ripley.)

It is now canon.
Having two whippets currently sleeping behind me, the idea of them in Xenomorph outfits running around brings me much joy
whippets can give you brain damage, be careful!
The one good thing they could have done is have WY finally get their prize and it bites them in the ass but instead they disbanded WY off screen for what reason? i honestly kinda love the bleakness of this movie if you're treating it as the final chapter in a self-contained trilogy. obviously it sucks that Newt and Hicks die, but i see it in that the alien just keeps coming back and taking things away from Ripley. it's her own personal demon, constantly coming back to haunt her, and for what?
It’s a return to the first movie making more horror and personal like
@@eyespy3001 The reaction against the deaths comes from people who saw Aliens first, and thought it was just a fun action adventure. They just don't want Alien to be a horror franchise.

@@ruby8994 It's the script. The story sucks and the ending is just a ripoff of Terminator 2's ending.

I like alien 3, neither of these versions are my favourite tho, I might be wrong but I think there's a third version, if there isnt then I feel like there is a much better cut still to be made by just blending these two together and just using the best parts of both versions
Regardless alien 3 is one of the most important movies in the franchise because it is the movie that establishes one of the most interesting and groundbreaking pieces of lore surrounding the alien, the fact that they take on physical traits of their host, people like to write off this movie as if it's all garbage and then glaze stories which feature T-Rex xenomorphs or predaliens or gorilla aliens as if they don't owe everything to a movie often cited as a low point for the franchise
This movie also perfectly recaptures the dark, miserable lovecraftian (cruel and unforgiving universe) tone that the first movie had which was lost (even if it was deliberately) in James cameron's aliens by not only opening with the deaths of two fan favourite characters from the previous movie but then going so far as to show us in excruciating detail the autopsy of a child followed by the rest of the movie, the death of a dog, an attempted SA, Ripley turned host, etc.
@@thatgamingkiwi1630 I'd use the dog if 8t were up to me, personally I've never understood why people say the ox is better, it doesn't make as much sense as the dog, the alien in alien 3 is smaller and faster, which are traits it could reasonably gain from a dog, if it came out of an ox then surely it would be larger than a regular alien and would have horns
I assume people prefer the ox because no one wants to see a dog die but I think that's just part of the movies dark tone

I'll admit that Aliens is a masterpiece of a movie, however people who hate Alien 3 because of how dark it is completely miss the point of the film,it's supposed to be dark, depressing, isolated, hopeless, despair, sad, scary, atmospheric
People also miss the symbolism, poetic, redemption message, and the overall message of the movie
People forget that this film was supposed to be the closing movie. (Before Fox decided they wanted more cash and decided to release the biggest mistake of a film Alien Resurrection)
this movie was not only about the end of our beloved protagonist Ripley, but the end of the Alien franchise, before they started to milk the franchise for Cash
No not my Newt 🥺
Thats a really impressive idea. They way they killed hicks and newt (a few screen shots in the intro credits) was really lazy and a joke
Newt was fucking annoying in Aliens, and I'm glad her plot armor was revoked in ³.
Fun fact: chris nolan is an alien 3 apologist
Alien 3 is my favourite, it's super gory and the concept is scary. Great stuff
Thanks guys
I keep thinking "it's not that bad" and then I remember they killed off Newt and Hicks and it annoys me again.
How dare bad things happen in an Alien movie, right?
Well, I certainly did not expect the cinema I work at to be used as a backround(21:33) for a mr.sunday movies video😂
12:24 That isn't CGI. It's compositing.
The only thing I don't like about the Assembly cut or how is it called, is the ending where Ripley just dives into the furnace and that is it.
I love the part where the Queen bursts out of her and she sorta speak embraces it or holds it close to her so it can't escape anywhere.
I'm sure Rudy Giuliani is great friends with the xenomorph
Maybe that's not a toupee on Donald Trump's head...
@@KeithFraser82 False.
Xenomorphs actually look real.
11:32 The only shot of the Alien in the whole movie that used CGI was when it’s head starts to crack after they turn on the sprinklers.
17:10 nice Spyro Stewart Copeland’s background music
17:03 Excellent use of Spyro the Dragon "Artisan's Home" to start of the trivia section. Nicely done, editor!
Glad im not the only one who was like hey. . . that's spryo
@22:07 Caravan of Garbages? Don't you mean Caravans of Garbage?
This is one of the most underrated movies ever.
I can’t believe they made a movie about Australia
Australia... IN SPACE!
Is that Spyro the Dragon music in the trivia section?
Alien 3 isn't terrible, obviously compared to the first 2 it doesn't hold a candle, but compared to Ressurection or anything after, it's almost a masterpiece
“Start the next one out with some real bad vibes”. That really is the thing, right off the bat you’re viscerally dealing with the deaths of Hicks and Newt. Where do the stakes go from there?
Good point. Very much a "shoot the shaggy dog" thing. They don't even built to it or anything.
Very excited for the Alien Resurrection episode, it’s probably my favorite guilty pleasure movie of all time.
I really like Resurrection. A couple of edits would make it great.
Same. Getting the dude who mad Delicatessen to make an Alien film was such a wild choice. The weird visuals and cinematography are ridiculously good.
That alternate Alien 3 story by William Gibson is awful. I now understand why Fox went with the story we actually got after reading it.
There are no marines in this movie mate
10:35 Oh look, it's me!
I really like the Alien3 Assembly Cut
I like the Spyro music at 17:05
I genuinely think the extended version of Alien 3 is brilliant.
Dance.
Bear in mind that the "assembly" version is NOT Fincher's version. As stated in this video, he refused to be involved in the edit.
No real human is going to have half his head and ear ripped off by a chunk of metal and just be okay. Dude would be in a coma. It's not a real person and anyone that thinks it is, I worry about.
Unfortunately "Sexiest bald woman in movie history" just got stolen by Cassandra Nova.
The previous title holder was Karen Gillan as Nebula.
Then before that it was ol' Siggy Weavy
Cassandra Nova is nonbinary tho, so congrats Karen Gillan - you still win!
Loved Emma since the remake of Lady Chatterley, but yeah, Amy Pond was great as Nebbers.
You could have saved her Doctor. And Rory. RORY!!!
@@solvseus You mean the character where that's never explicitly stated? You mean the character constantly referred to as "she"? Charles Xavier's "sister"?
That character?
Natalie Portman from V for Vendetta isn't considered?
Jim Emerson has a great analysis of the assembly cut that shows finches modeled the film after JEAN D’ARC, the old French silent film. If you watch it as a tragedy/passion play rather than a horror, it comes to life a bit. I genuinely like the assembly cut now
The directors/assembly cut of this film is far from terrible and contains some excellent elements even if as a whole it doesn’t succeed - it’s also significantly better than Resurrection.
What Fincher managed to scrape together from the chaos is miraculous too.
Guys, love your work, but Ralph Brown's signature role is obviously and indubitably Danny in 'Withnail and I'
I'm an Alien 3 defender, it's not a perfect movie, but it's better than most movies
So far it's the 3rd best alien film, let's see how romulus is
Chris Cunningham, who directed some of the craziest music videos for Aphex Twin, Bjork, and even Madonna, worked on many of the creature FX in this movie, including that Bishop animatronic
