The Rocker class has a cool sprite in FireRed and LeafGreen! I’m a little bummed this class didn’t stick around. The class is called “Denki Group” in Japanese, which is apparently a reference to a music group in Japan. Maybe the reason this class never returned is because the reference is dated now? Ah well. For some reason, the Tamer is a class that tends to use Pokémon exclusive to one version of the game. That explains why they use Golduck and Sandslash - Sandslash is even a counterpart to Arbok. Maybe the idea is that, as Tamers, they’re in possession of “rare” creatures? I dunno. The Collector class from Ruby and Sapphire onwards also uses version exclusive Pokémon, and I think that makes total sense for them.

I think Channelers using Ghost-types (at least in Gen I) is because they're all possessed by the spirits of Pokemon Tower. Which is actually a thing in Shinto; objects (and occasionally people) being used to attract and house kami.
The real question is how would one decide what Trainer Class they become. I can't be an ace trainer because even though I like having a balanced team, I'm pretty bad at Pokémon battling against other people. But would I be one of the monotype classes? I'm not sure. In fact come back to me in a few months I might have some answers.
I've genuinely wanted to make a spreadsheet of every pokemon type used by each trainer class through all the generations but it very, VERY quickly turned into a lot of research that i was never 100% certain of
@@MarkBonneaux I’ve been wanting to do something similar, in my case compile every evolution line used by every antagonist/evil organization grunt and what lines I’d add to their roster, I just haven’t had the time. I do remember looking at the BW1 Plasma Grunts a month or two back though, and surprisingly they only use 5 or so evolution lines (Patrat, Lillipup, and Trubbish being a few lines that I can remember off the top of my head).
What do you do IRL? Very few people have the resources to become a full time trainer, allowing them to have a large team with varied needs. The player characters basically go on a gap year and discover they're a prodigy.
We’re basically the “trainer” class like the early rivals were called. And like how the champions have very balanced (in composition, not fairness lol) and powerful Pokémon they’re basically Pokémon masters. The trainers are basically the pre-condition to becoming an actual Pokémon master.
The awkwardness of the juggler section was a thing of beauty! Lovely video this was with some interesting titbits of trivia. The various designs and team rulings of the trainer classes are fun to know about and it's surprising that I haven't seem more challenge runs on the basis of playing as trainer classes (I know I've been tempted to play through a game as a Bug Catcher before). 0:41 - A bit odd that the tennis player has a Lilligant. With her long dress, you'd think Lilligant would be far from ideal to play tennis (though looking it up, she's far faster than I remember).
Just wanted to say the reason why tamers hold a lollipop and a whip, is because in japanese the idiom equivalent to "Carrot and stick" is "candy and whip", as in they are using positive and negative reinforcement for training pokemon
one thing you missed (not a pokemon exception): the tamers use sandslash and golduck because of a reference to the anime, an unofficial gym leader owns a circus and he has a sandshrew and psyduck. I didn't do my research. I just remembered the episode
Oh man, I’ve been wanting to do a casual essay on the trainer classes for years, so this is pretty awesome. In fact I was even thinking about it again recently because I was playing FireRed for the past few months and asked myself “Why are Bird Keepers almost always in the mid-to-late game? Surely trainers like that would be found in all stages? It’s not like bird Pokémon are exclusively power houses?” And other questions that may or may not deserve analysis. Another interesting aspect of the Ace Trainers worth talking about is that they’re most like the player character. They tend to have more type coverage, some of them talk about being League contenders, and most of them are found in the mid-to-late games usually before and in Victory Road. Also perhaps a little too much use of the G-word there. Like maybe once for context and then calling them by their proper name would’ve been more appropriate. Anyhow, happy about This series, can’t wait to see more of it because it has been a special interest of mine for a while. Probably started when I played Colosseum and was completely baffled by the completely generic non-specialized nonsense “trainer classes” like “fun old guy” and “bandana guy” and “glasses man”
Me too! And her battling partner has the middle name of my fiancé. I didn’t remember her battling partner’s name when I battled them again recently and I got so excited to see that. Crazy how some things happen.
I'd love a video about who is the strongest Psychic Trainer lore wise, and not their pokemon but the actual trainer. Sabrina is strong, but IS she the strongest?
Poor Lopunny... First they were kept out of Galar, then they were let in, only after confiscating their Dizzy Punch, High Jump Kick, and Mega, and now, they get the jar.
Fun fact, in Italian channeler and medium are both translated into "medium" (a latin word). I would never expect that a gen 1 channeler is something different than a medium 😅 (it's always good to learn something culturally useful in your videos)
As a firefighter myself I personally would also like to have water types for extiguishment, such as Blastoise and Wartortle. But also an Electric type for times when there is a downed power line and also Ghost/Fire/Fighting type for potential rescue. Some fire types are are immune to fire damage and would be excellent to send in for a search and rescue situation.
18:23 Pokéfans are not "geeky parents". They might seem that way to us, because they've made owning Pokémon such a big part of their identity, but remember, within the Pokémon universe, Pokémon are the equivalent of animals. It's not a niche, geeky hobby, it's more akin to someone owning pets. Pokéfans are more akin to "dog moms" or "crazy cat ladies".
A little tidbit you missed on the gambler: in Gen 1 the "gamble" was which type of pokemon they would use. They used fire, water, grass (and maybe electric?) but only one of them.
It’s interesting to note that bug catchers are absent in all non japan based regions since catching bugs as a child seems to be a more culturally japan thing
I died a little inside when I noticed the Lopunny in the jar... Speaking of censorship, some class sprites, mainly affecting the beauty (and I think some female swimmers), were covered up in the international versions to be less busty/show less skin. The sages and such were changed because Nintendo of America had a weird "no religious references" policy at the time.
8:38 I mean Bruno uses one or two onixes or steelixes and in the rematch in Let's Go bizarrely, an Alolan golem. Even in the Gen 2 remakes he kept an onix until the rematch where he swaps it out with a hariyama and adds a lucario.
Bikers also use Muk and Grimer, a reference to the sludge and oil found in motorcycle engines. And Pokemon Maniacs use Pokemon mainly in the monster egg group.
Ya gym leaders and rivals are self explanatory, gyms hire certain archtypes to populate the gym but need to focus around the main type, if you're smart and well leveled they can be beaten, each leader has an ace and a signature TM move to raise the stakes. Rivals will have a mix of pokemon and challenge you at key moments, usually it's their own selection of the best pokemon of that region and the starter that beats you. Team rocket I found very interesting when researching, there are a lot of poison types and rattatta/zubat, annoying trashy pokemon they found, but also some fighting types and maybe a Hypno. Most are related to crime or the general toxic evil theme. Magma and Aqua however focus more on their specific type or mascots, Camerupt and Sharpedo
Fun Fact; in the UK, there was a very old (1922) song called The Laughing Policeman by Charles Jolly, it was so popular it lingered around until at LEAST the 80s, and was even in the 2016 animation adaptation of Ethel & Ernest. The image of a Jolly Red Faced Chubby Policeman has faded over time, for obvious reasons...but I do believe the Galarian Officer is based on that old trope over here
Also worthy of note with skiers having flying types: Ski jumping and "Ski Flying" are a whole Olympic sport. Essentially, skis appear to have some mild aerodynamic properties that are used to extend aerial travel distances. This further proves that if humans can find a way to exploit the tiniest thing that gives them the ability to do thing but better, they'll absolutely milk it until it's gone

I can't decide if have a colossapede or a crustle in my team because I like both but I don't want to repeat the bug type in my PW2 team
"Super effective on Dark types, like the police are supposed to be" We see what you did there 😭😭😭
Bruh 💀💀
He said: *as Police tends to be
Im p sure it was just cuz dark is the "evil" type, and criminal in pokemon often use dark types and not cuz of..... That....
Or you know, they’re pedophiles. Could just be very kinky pedophiles.
@@supreme_king_obama1158 L-let's not go down this way, shall we? 0_0
@@robertlupa8273 yeah, lets not.
one thing you missed (not a pokemon exception): the tamers use sandslash and golduck because of a reference to the anime, an unofficial gym leader owns a circus and he has a sandshrew and psyduck.
Probably started when I played Colosseum and was completely baffled by the completely generic non-specialized nonsense “trainer classes” like “fun old guy” and “bandana guy” and “glasses man”
Yeah, what's up with those names?
There's a psychic trainer in Sinnoh with my name, and I've never been quite so spooked by these games before or since.
Me too! And her battling partner has the middle name of my fiancé. I didn’t remember her battling partner’s name when I battled them again recently and I got so excited to see that. Crazy how some things happen.
of course it was a psychic trainer
I'd love a video about who is the strongest Psychic Trainer lore wise, and not their pokemon but the actual trainer. Sabrina is strong, but IS she the strongest?
Great video idea man, hope this becomes a series cause I love this type of binge-able content.
0:36
I was thinking about Pokemons like Makuhita, like the action of smashing bricks and all that
It was them that inspired the move Brick Break.
Poor Lopunny... First they were kept out of Galar, then they were let in, only after confiscating their Dizzy Punch, High Jump Kick, and Mega, and now, they get the jar.
22:29 Don't forget the most significant of all Pokemon ever used by a Mystery Man; a human giantess.
There's also the fact that Lasses grow up to become Beauties, and in Gen 6 they also imply Schoolkids become Scientists
"Take a guess what type the psychic class uses.... moving on"
That's a lowkey 4D joke right there. I see it, and I appreciate it.
Lockstin: "Hikers . . . All was built like a bear."
My dirty little gay brain: 😏
that dark type joke at 20:55 was absolutely uncalled for man
Exactly I was shocked 💀💀
9:40 i love how one of the bird keepers just looks like he lost a bird
"oh fu-"
Fun fact, in Italian channeler and medium are both translated into "medium" (a latin word). I would never expect that a gen 1 channeler is something different than a medium 😅 (it's always good to learn something culturally useful in your videos)
As a firefighter myself I personally would also like to have water types for extiguishment, such as Blastoise and Wartortle. But also an Electric type for times when there is a downed power line and also Ghost/Fire/Fighting type for potential rescue. Some fire types are are immune to fire damage and would be excellent to send in for a search and rescue situation.
9:46 love the bird keeper toby reference i think it’s so cool seeing how all my favorite youtubers are friends an know each other
18:23 Pokéfans are not "geeky parents".
They predicted what those of us born in the early 90's would become by now...I know I'm calling myself out but it's not wrong 😂
I can't wait for you to get to Gen 3, because the Orre games have some great trainer classes... mainly "Fun Old Man"
IDK WHO EDITS YOUR VIDEOS BUT THE LOPUNNY IN A JAR AT 11:27 WAS NOT NECESSARY LMAO
11:21 oh no it’s “the jar”
A little tidbit you missed on the gambler: in Gen 1 the "gamble" was which type of pokemon they would use. They used fire, water, grass (and maybe electric?) but only one of them.
It’s interesting to note that bug catchers are absent in all non japan based regions since catching bugs as a child seems to be a more culturally japan thing
9:46 I hear something...
"Hey PokéFans! Bird Keeper Toby here!"
Also the Beauties were originally winking at you in Gen 2.
Not going to lie, little lockstin thinking medium was a size description is adorable. ❤️❤️
Lockstin: Says the word "Gypsie".
Twitter users: *Finally, a worthy opponent.*
This series is so cool! I look forward to seeing more
8:38 I mean Bruno uses one or two onixes or steelixes and in the rematch in Let's Go bizarrely, an Alolan golem. Even in the Gen 2 remakes he kept an onix until the rematch where he swaps it out with a hariyama and adds a lucario.
Seeing all these cool sprite presentations makes me wish Nintendo would partner with Square Enix to make a HD2D game for pokémon. Awesome video!
It’s weird how the Poké-maniacs in gen 1 and 2 are wearing coats and not Pokémon suits like later on.
"what pokemon would the smasher trainer class use?"
Me: mhm... Oh no...
Learning all of this stuff just makes me love Pokémon even more.
Roughneck Kirby with his Cleffa is a shoutout to well... Kirby! Cleffa looks a lot like Kirby!
"Yo Bro, how'd you get so strong and good at Karate?"
"I punch my Pokemon."
My favorite trainer class is the motorcyclist class, specifically Charles, he's a heart breaker.
“Super effective on dark types, as police tend to be…” subtle, yet still pretty blatant. Well done
Well, duh. Dark = dirty fighting = criminals. That's what he meant, right? /s
It amazes me how you never run out of video ideas
I Always tink That the trainer classes are some of the most underrated parts of the Franchise, they bring só much detail for the world
Bikers also use Muk and Grimer, a reference to the sludge and oil found in motorcycle engines. And Pokemon Maniacs use Pokemon mainly in the monster egg group.
Oh god, not the Lopunny jar!
12:40 when Lockstin forgets to make the white empty pixel parts near the gentlemen's hands transparent.
11:31 WHY LOPUNNY IN THE JAR
I like videos that talk about trainer classes and this one have a fantastic editing. My favorite is the Pokemon Ranger.
I think one of the rich gentlemen in fire red had a pikachu,
Great video!
I'm glade that you included the tidbit about the karate king that became a beauty. Its a small but well appreciated detail by pokemon
12:20 scientist is a real job
you should do every pokemon abilities explained next.
Gotta love how poorly aged some of those classes names are.
Bird keeper Dane: go Entai!
Other trainer: wait? that's not up bird
Entai:...... * tweet *
I think the Lockstin looks great with and without glasses I can't choose witch I like more.
Don't make fun of the Fisherman, when he evolves his team will be 6 Garydos.
Not sure if it was intentional, but perhaps Team Rocket's poison types (especially Koffing) are referecing rocket exhaust?
Maybe that's a stretch.
9:50 Bird Keeper Tony Spotted!
I played through BDSP in spanish specifically for nostalgia reasons and the Cueball/Roughneck trainers were specifically translated to Bald.
"No they're innocent really"
"They're cheating"
LOCKSTIN NO!!
"They're gyping you!"
AAAAAHHHHHHHHH
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
Wait lockstin... roughneck KIRBY? Having only klefa? Might be a reference.
Fun Fact; in the UK, there was a very old (1922) song called The Laughing Policeman by Charles Jolly, it was so popular it lingered around until at LEAST the 80s, and was even in the 2016 animation adaptation of Ethel & Ernest.
The image of a Jolly Red Faced Chubby Policeman has faded over time, for obvious reasons...but I do believe the Galarian Officer is based on that old trope over here
I really like the inclusion of the trans beauty >.< As I also used to do Karate and ended up changing trainer types later in life
Also worthy of note with skiers having flying types: Ski jumping and "Ski Flying" are a whole Olympic sport. Essentially, skis appear to have some mild aerodynamic properties that are used to extend aerial travel distances. This further proves that if humans can find a way to exploit the tiniest thing that gives them the ability to do thing but better, they'll absolutely milk it until it's gone
5:57 "Slurs aside"
7:24 subtle achievement hunter reference, i like it
