That is an amazing restoration of that rusty hatchet.❤ What I love and give you 100 thumbs up for is getting the job done with simple tools! It shows the dwi'ers that you don't need alot of tools to get it done. I love your old school wire wheeler. Again great job!❤🎉❤
Thank you so much for the comment. 👍 My goal is to demonstrate that anyone can do restorations with minimal equipment, a bit of know-how and a healthy dose of practice and patience. I would love to have a large shop full of expensive equipment that take away most of the labor, but more importantly, lost is the satisfaction of completing a restoration with your own hands and the learning and skill gained through the process. The old school belt driven wire wheel and the little red vise both belonged to my grandpap and are reminders for me on every project I undertake. Thanks again and take care! 🛠
@MattsGarage1791 I'm glad you still have your Grampa's vice and grinder❤. Tools that belonged to our fathers are priceless. I have a drill and jigsaw which belong to my dad as well as his tools and my two brothers tools. I also have my niece's father-in-law's Craftsman jigsaw and vise from 1947. I use them all the time.
You did a great job Matt. The wood burning really brought out that beautiful grain in the handle and the satin finish is a great look. Nicely done sir.
Thanks buddy! Just enough wood burning to make the grain pop. With the deeper pits left over, I didn't think a mirror finish would work out so satin it was 😁🛠
Hi David! Thank you, really appreciate it 👍 Axes/hatchets are just enjoyable to restore because they are so useable. leather work is a work on progress for me 😁 🛠 Take care
Very nice Matt!! That's a great little hatchet. There's nothing like a good piece of hickory! I like how you combined all the finishes and the extra flair with the casing and finished it off with a custom mask. Take it easy and I'll catch up with ya later.
Thanks!! The more rusted and abused the more gratifying the restoration. And leather sheath with feather...why not 😁 All these years the little axe deserves it 👍🛠
@@MattsGarage1791 totally awesome! You have me inspired to do some restoring! I'll be binging your vids for a bit. I need to get out of the house to do some fishing first. Been a long week of paperwork! Great channel!
What a great job! Love the burning effect, not tried that yet. I could practically smell the linseed from here, nice to see a bit of leatherwork too. 10/10 from me mate👍🏻
Thanks Alex, good to hear from you. 👍 Threw a little of all of my favorites into this project - steel, woodburning with linseed oil and wax, a bit of leather and a .45 shell case for good measure! 😁🛠 Take care.
Hey there toolscouter! Have to agree, they're fun. I've got an old 5lb woodsman style head from the late 1800s that I need to really clean up and hang 😁🛠 Appreciate you stopping by!👍
Just wanted to say I’m sorry for messing up your name. It looks like auto correct put exes instead of axes. More than anything wanted you to know I wasn’t disrespecting your name. See you in the next one.
Hey no problem toolscouter all good. 👍 I'm so bad at typing on my phone, I think i end up typing every comment at least three times because of fat fingers and auto correct...😁 I appreciate you following up, you're a stand up guy. Take care.
Appreciate it Bill! 👍 I've been waiting for an opportunity to try the .45 case in an axe and I can really use the practice in my leatherwork. 😁 Take care! 🛠
Hi Matt, nice axe, I’m hoping to dig one up today. An axe is a very ancient tool dating back over 10thousand years ago, originally from stone, iron axes were made around 500BC😀😀it’s cool isn’t it
Very nice, Matt. I just started burning the handles a bit with some hammers that I restored. A real good look. I like the case you made for it, something I have thought about getting into. Never done any leather working. Great restoration, as always. -Tom
Thanks a bunch Tom. The wood burning can give a real nice look and if applied deep enough can protect the wood. I'm admittedly a novice at leather work but it's one of my 3 favorites...walnut, leather and steel. Thanks again, take care! 👍🛠
That came out really nice. I like the satin finish and the deep pits just show that it has character. Great that you were able to save the handle too. Newly subscribed to your channel and two things I noticed. I have that same Wen so what caught my eye was the updated platen. Interesting. Also noticed a GREAT looking pencil sharpener on your workbench. Wow! I'll spend some time looking through some of your previous vids to catch a glimpse of each and to see if there's anything expanded on them.
Thanks so much, and welcome aboard! I appreciate the effort that goes into making something old look brand new again, but I don't mind letting it keep some of its earned battle scars and try to save as much of the original as possible 👍 There's a recent video for the old Boston pencil sharpener too. Depending on projects I 'upgrade/modify' the few tools that I have to better suit the job. Stay tuned, lots more to come this year 👍🛠?
Thanks! Absolutely. 👍 the little 1x30 is nice but nothing that can't be done with a file or other hand sanding methods. that's the real prize, restore by hand with just a few basic pieces of equipment, a little know-how and a healthy dose of practice and patience. 🛠
Thanks a lot! I do heat the evaporust most of the time - seems to work a little more quickly and deeply. I'm not sure, the shingler's axe usually has the hammer face on opposite side but the cedar axe seems to lack the nail puller... conundrum! Great comment 👍🛠
Great-looking hatchet. The leather case (and trim) finish the piece with a touch of class!
Thanks! I like that...a touch of class 😁. Appreciate it 👍🛠

Wow! The hatchet came out awesome! You should do a video in the mask as well! Thanks for sharing

Hatchets are very handy tools. Turned out great . Thanks for sharing!!
Hi there Ashley! ( not terrible things to collect ) Thanks! 👍🛠
@MattsGarage1791 👍👍
Absolutely gorgeous restoration! We have a hatchet and a few axes that need some TLC. Love the added touch of the feather too.

Not a bad way to spend winter days restoring old tools 🛠 ( or fishing )! 😁🎣

I always like a good hatchet restoration
Me too! 👍🛠 Appreciate you stopping by...How's your January going up there?
@ just trying to get in to see the doctor. I’m in a holding pattern
Nicely done Meza. I think exes are my favorite. It’s a lot of fun putting together. Again, great job and thanks for sharing. Have a great week.

I like the shell casing and leather case . Nice restoration.
Good ole .45 acp for the axe restoration win 👍🛠. Thanks guys!
Wow Matt! The hatchet looks amazing! Beautiful leather case! Another great video!
Hi Paula and Jason!! Thank you so much. As someone commented, the hatchet gained a bit of class 😁 🛠 Take care.
That is beautiful Matt - well done! I love the .45 case and the leather sheath - perfect.

Absolutely Brun, you know your history! The wedge, one of THE original simple machines of science! 👍🛠
Great Job Matt. Great way to start off the new year. Everything about it is a fine job. the feather is a nice touch.
Hi there Mr Dale! Thank you. Fun to watch everyone's new projects 👍🛠

Hello and happy new year 2025. Woow that axe coming very nice
Hey there and Happy New Year! 🎊 Thanks, I love cleaning up old axes and making them usable again 🛠 Appreciate the visit 👍
Great job my friend.
Appreciate it! Axes are one of my favorites to save. 👍🛠

Looks great. I still need to get a 1x30 just make do with what I have for the time being. And enjoy making tools look good again
Thanks! Absolutely. 👍 the little 1x30 is nice but nothing that can't be done with a file or other hand sanding methods. that's the real prize, restore by hand with just a few basic pieces of equipment, a little know-how and a healthy dose of practice and patience. 🛠
great restoration! nice leather cover
Thanks Bill! Classy and usable 👍🛠
Beautiful. Do you heat your Evaporust? Also, the nail puller feature is interesting. Do you think it might a shingler's (Cedar) ax?
Thanks a lot! I do heat the evaporust most of the time - seems to work a little more quickly and deeply. I'm not sure, the shingler's axe usually has the hammer face on opposite side but the cedar axe seems to lack the nail puller... conundrum! Great comment 👍🛠
If a wire comes off the back side of the wheel it should be on a perfect trajectory toward oh let’s see here……..
