This Axe was Trash - Restored it into a Treasure

In today's video I restored this extremely rusty axe , found by a local in Waccamaw River . I worked a lot to restore the axe head but the brilliance of this video is the handle with a superb design, rarely seen until now.

Thank you sir for sharing your processes. I used to think that one of your most difficult restorations was the old cash register but at least it came with road map to take apart, restore, reassemble. When it comes to an old ax head you don't really have a guide book to tell you how long the handle should be or a visual cue as to what the ax head originally looked like. I love the way the rust has revealed the grain of the forged steel and shows where the hard edge is inserted into the folded body before forge welding. I haven't finished the video yet, but I hope you re-weld that cutting edge - it's come away in areas, by the looks of it.

Looking at the grain of the head it looks like it is forged iron and not steel. Actual wrought iron is somewhat hard to find these days.

@@CoolAgainRestoration No worries. I'm no lumberjack, however I do know how to properly hang an axe head and you did a fantastic job. My only recommendation is that instead of beechwood I would've used American Hickory or Ash wood.

I have a few nice hand forged axe heads, but I never bothered making handles for them because I never plan on using them, and they are easier to display without a handle, but after watching this video I'm tempted to make some handles.
