I have one exactly like it except mine is in pretty rough though not hopeless shape. My father (deceased in 1997) bought it at an auction in northcentral Pennsylvania. ... In the meantime, circa 2017, I found an old photograph of a man (a Quaker) who is to me a 6th great-grandfather in northern Virginia (Frederick Co.). He died in 1854. In the photo, which is probably circa 1845-50, he has the exact same hatchet in one hand and a draw knife in the other. I am inspired to preserve / restore the old hatchet my father bought that is currently hanging on a couple nails out in the garage.
Looks great DJ. If i find hewing hatchets or axes they are so expensive i can't afford. Thatbis a very nice example and classic Plumb! The bluing looks great and the handle is beautiful. Nicely done.
Nicely done DJ. Most hewing hatchets, we're flat on one side, and some of them did have a curved handle depending on the use. I plan on doing a video in the near future on how I use a belt grinder to sharpen axes.
Thanks, yea learning a lot on this one, On my belt sander I am worried it will get too hot so I checked it all the time, sorry for the delay in my response having to work a lot, trying to catch up on your videos, I just finished building an xray room, now just waiting on physicist to test for xray leakage if any!!!!!!!!!
@djstoolrestorations while overheating and affecting the temper of the bit is a concern, It mostly happens with the finer gritt. I definitely need to do a video on it.
Nice! I have one of these hatchets sitting on my bench I need to finish, and someone just gave me another double bit axe to restore…. People need to stop giving me stuff it’s piling up!
Great resto enjoyed the video thanks for sharing
Thanks for coming, glad you enjoyed it!!!!!!!

Ah yes, the sweet ASMR sound of the carb cleaner can 🎶
It is a good sound isn't it?
Nice video.
Many many thanks

I hope you are able to get to that hatchet, it is nice to have people give you tools, that's awesome!
Looks good. Handle is supposed to be like that & that one is left handed only because of the bend in handle. Have a great day
Thanks for the info, I like it, I could not find much!!!!
Good as new, I need to find one of the 1000 and 2000 wheels
I do have the 2000 grit and I do like it a lot, I do need to buy the 1000 grit!
Wicked looking hatchet😉😉
Thanks for the compliment!
I am guessing that a hatchet like that was used for debarking and squaring / shaping timber and other assorted lumber pieces, not for felling trees.
Yes sir you are right!
Handle could be bowed to keep knuckles outta the way when you are hewing a beam.
You are correct, one of the viewers told me!
Plumb single bevel broad hatchet, originally with a straight handle.
So mine is warped!
I am wondering if you take on restoration projects for customers?
No, I work too much!
