Had it fixed and working great in just a few minutes. I found the same exact shredded cord, black, exactly as you did. I think this must be an Ego manufacturing defect. You are awesome. Thank you.
Thanks for coming by Billy. Glad you got it fixed. I'm on my 2nd year and have been giving the Ego quite a work out. It's holding up just fine. Not sure what that shredded stuff was, but thought it was remnants of an old tarp. Best to ya and your Ego!
Thanks for the nice reply. Forgot to mention this also fixed my bump and feed for the line. I just figured it didnt work anymore but it now works great.
Sir, you are the man! Opened my trimmer up and found a twine on the inside coiled up around the gear teeth. So simple. Thank you. And while I was in there I cleaned it a bit. Working like it did day one. Can’t wait to go tackle some grass edges.
A thousand times thank you! This is the second time I had this problem. The first time I didn’t know it and had to swap for a new one. Such a simple fix! I hope the folks at ego start telling people this in the trouble shoot process, but they’re probably just enjoying collecting $60 for a new head replacement 😕
Thank you so much for this video! Fixed my problem. Ego replaced my edger twice and the second time the repair place couldn't fix it (hence the replacement).
Ok, add me to the list of “satisfied customers” with your video! I took everything apart (my bolt size was 13mm) and found a piece of twine underneath the housing (I assume where you found your issue). Now it works! By the way, the motor was really hot while I was trying to load the line before I found your video and I fixed it. Thanks!!
That's great. Glad you took a look before burning the motor out. I tried twice and it got pretty warm so decided to take it apart. The owner's manual wasn't much help. Thanks for your comment JT.
Thanks Mate. That was really helpful. There I was thinking I might need a replacement part, but after I watched this it took about 3 minutes to dismantle the head, remove the stringy crap from the mechanism, and get it working perfectly again. Great stuff.
Thank you!! Had the same issue this morning, took it apart and looked like a lot of my landscape weed barrier fabric ended up inside of the trimmer. The auto load and bump feed is now working :)
Thank you so very, very much! I have had so much trouble with this, and the Ego people and the warranty repair people (Home Depot) did not know about this. I'm so happy to be able to use my Ego again! Thank you thank you thank you!
Glad you got it fixed! A lot of times, it's just a matter of taking things apart and you'll find the problem yourself. I was bummed out when that happened to mine too. I have been considering buying this Ego trimmer but saw some negative reviews about the powerhead stopped working after a few months of use....now I know why and how to fix it. Time to order...thanks.
I've been using it commercially since late last summer. It's holding up real good and no more mixing gas, or gas at all. It charges fast. I use my Honda for the real big clearing jobs. I'd buy the Ego again. Thanks for coming by.
I expect I have the first version of this trimmer head. The video did NOT work. Even though I put a glove on, I could not get a good enough grip on the black spool to get the nut loosened. Had to stick a screwdriver inside edge to hold spool from turning. My nut was NOT 10mm, but was 13mm. I did NOT have anything debris under the two removed pieces. I did clean up a little dirt though. Once put back together, string still would not load. Tried to hold the string, but spool kept turning. Tried to hold the spool, but still did not load. While pushing the powerload button, I tried pushing in with my other hand and holding the green to extend line tap. That worked. It pulled the line right in smoothly without the typical ratcheting or bumping effect.
I've had my EGO Powerload for almost two years now. It loads perfectly but bumping the head on the ground has NEVER worked to advance the string. I have to pull more string out by pushing down on the head with my hand and then pulling more string out by hand. Also the orange string is not tough enough at all when I'm trimming between and around bricks on my patio. I have to pull out more string after about 15 seconds of trimming! Crazy. I called EGO today and they didn't have any stronger string to recommend.
I'm on my 3rd year now and have only had the one problem with mine. Bricks and rocks will shear off the line. I'd take it apart to see if anything is in there preventing the line to advance. Ugly line may hold up a little better.

@@popup1959 yes it spins but doesn’t wind up the string. Yes, I’m using stock ego string! So frustrating, I wish I could load it manually or some other way!
Yes, I wished I could too when mine didn't load! Does the head move up and down as well as turn when you hit the load button? Also, did you remove the green part too? That's where I got most of my debris from. I use a twisted line that may also help. It should load if all mentioned have been complete. If not, you're going to have to return your trimmer where purchased or deal with EGO directly.
@@popup1959 No, it simply turned but did not bump up and down. Someone posted a video of it as well so it seems like I’m not the only one. Yes I took it all out and cleared out some strands of plastic, but still did not work. I wonder if it is whatever is causing the bumping motion not to work that’s the problem. The Spring maybe?
That's what mine was doing too. Did you take it apart all the way down like in the video? I had a bunch of debris under there at the bottom. After that, it worked fine and no problems since, except a couple tangles on the spool.
@@popup1959 thanks for getting back. Yeah I tried what you did, took off the nut and checked/cleaned everything, even under the green part, but no dice. Ah well. Thanks anyways. :)
No problem. The head heats up fast when trying to load the line. It's possible it got burned out if you tried loading it too long. I hope that's not the case.
I haven't had any other issues with mine since. Does it move up and down while trying to feed the line? If not, it could be the motor. If you try loading it for too long, the motor may overheat.
Ok great. Measure out about 12 feet of line. Feed the line through one hole until it comes out the other side. Keep pulling until that side is even with the other side. Now you should have the line fed through the head in one piece with an equal amount of line coming out from both sides. Push the load button until there's about 6 inches coming out from both sides. Trim the line as it meets the cutter. You're ready to trim now.
Mine didn't work either a few times. Once was due to debris underneath like in this video, and the other times, it was due to the line getting twisted and caught in the spool.

I have a problem where my head spins when I press the auto load button, but it doesn’t make that clicking sound to pull in the string. Any ideas?
That's what mine was doing too. Did you take it apart all the way down like in the video? I had a bunch of debris under there at the bottom. After that, it worked fine and no problems since, except a couple tangles on the spool.
@@popup1959 thanks for getting back. Yeah I tried what you did, took off the nut and checked/cleaned everything, even under the green part, but no dice. Ah well. Thanks anyways. :)
No problem. The head heats up fast when trying to load the line. It's possible it got burned out if you tried loading it too long. I hope that's not the case.
What size socket do I need to have
I think I used a 10 MM.
Others are saying 13mm. Please check and let us know with response which one is accurate. Thanks
Mine is feeding line way too long/fast. Any tips?
Are you using twisted line? It does seem to make a difference.
My problem is that the powerload button doesn't engage. Has anyone had this problem and were you able to fix.
Check the switch. I just sent one back. I needed the throttle switch.
Yeah, um, except that "hold this real tight" doesn't quite work.
Maybe you could get someone to hold it for you.
That auto loader is a neat thing, my cheap tool doesn’t have anything like that!
Don't mind stringing the old way but this is pretty cool.
So I went through those steps….press the button and it just spins… no ratchet sound or apparently taking up the string. Now what??
Are the gears interlocked like they should be?
Mine hasn't been loading since out of the box
I'd just bring it back and exchange it.
I’ve done this and it still wouldn’t wind up!
I haven't had any other issues with mine since. Does it move up and down while trying to feed the line? If not, it could be the motor. If you try loading it for too long, the motor may overheat.
@@popup1959 yeah it moves up and down but it won’t wind up. It will for some reason wind up when I feed the line through one hole and one hole only.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for checking it out Rodney.
Mine loads fine but won’t bump anymore, anyone have that problem?
Mine didn't work either a few times. Once was due to debris underneath like in this video, and the other times, it was due to the line getting twisted and caught in the spool.
Whatup new friend!
How's it going buddy? Hanging around waiting for a delivery.
Thank you!
Thanks for coming by!
Many thanks!
Thank you !
