  • In 2021, the Detroit Madman decided he had too much s***, so he decided to auction a bunch of it off for charity. In this KWTX feature package, our evening anchor Gordon Collier spoke with Ted about the auction. Gordon even got to jam with Mr. Nugent. This one was a blast to both shoot and edit!

The first time I ever saw Ted, he was in his early 20's, full of piss and vinegar. He has that same "balls to the wall" attitude today, and his music stills rocks as hard as ever. I just don't think he still swings from a grapevine, in a loin cloth, dropping M-80's near the crowd, but, I bet he could! (The M-80 thing was a myth but let's keep it going.)

The album entitled Ted Nugent was even better than cat Scratch Fever. I was lucky enough to see him live with REO Speedwagon at the Oakland Coliseum, that was probably 1977. What a great concert!

My brother in law and I went to a sporting show in Illinois on a Sunday (the last day of the event) and happened on Ted's booth. It was fairly quiet, he was actuall in he booth and we ended up spending the next 3 hours talking to him. He may be the mad man from the Motor city, a bit crazy and extremely opinionated but one of the most interesting and down to earth people I've met in 67 trips around the sun.

I met him when I was a kid. He was recording at one of favorite Studios that happens to be very close to my house.
This started a on and off relationship, seeing each here and there (back at that Studio many times) played Guitar with him many times. Solved the world's problems together, many times over the past 30 years since that day in the Studio when I was about 14 years old.

I am 54 years old and grew up the youngest of 4 siblings. My brother who was 8 years older had me listening to Uncle Ted before i was out of elementary school. In fact, the first two albums I owned for my newly acquired record player at Christmas one year, was Double Live Gonzo and Led Zep 2. thanks to my brother who would sit for hours listening to these albums with me hammering out match after match of Backgammon.
Anyway, when I crank up Uncle Ted to this day, the hair on my arms stand outright and at FULL ATTENTION!
Hearing his Byrdland channel his talents through his massive wattage of Fender amplification... brings me back to a wonderful time and place each and every time, never fails, EVER!
Losing Eddie in 2020, has changed me and my music drive... I am sure it has for many of 70's and 80's rock and rollers. However, Ted will always be my Michigan brother and my go to good time rocker.. no matter how bad the music seen has become, I can power up Great White Buffalo and go back and see in my mind, and hear Uncle Ted devour his Gibson!
Best wishes Ted. Peace be with you my man. God Bless you and America!

This guy was the first concert I went to. It was near Louisville Ky. Before the 1975 album that really put him on the map, Ted was known as a "One Hit Wonder" with The Amboy Dukes "Journey to the Center of the Mind." The concert opened with Mike Pinera and Cactus. Then headlining was Ted Nugent! Ted called Mike to the stage for a great guitar dual. After seeing those guys up there playing I decided I was going to learn how to play guitar while holding down a 9:00 to 5:00 job, raise a wife and two kids while playing every Saturday Night at a bar in my area. Good thing I didn't add "Become Famous Rock Star" to the list!

    • @classygary
      @classygary 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Mike Pinera helped me to track a song that can be found on my channel entitled
“You Melt In My Eyes” (he also played the arpeggios on it) which is an original I wrote from inspiration derived from the grief of losing a women/enchantress I loved, who was the muse for it, to a drunk driver in Mexico City . Anyways it’s a long sorted but true story filled with serendipity and synchronicity… but the crux of it is both Pinera and I were both camped out in a rat infested mansion owned @ the time circa 2010… by the original manager/producer of several Sixties era acts inclusive of The Jefferson Airplane/Moby Grape/Its A Beautiful Day etc etc ie Mathew Katz up in Point Dume, Malibu before he ie Pinera with his wife vanished and absconded with the .wav files, so it has never been fully achieved or mastered and he has never relinquished what is rightfully mine, but such is life and I’ve learned to accept you cross paths with all kinds of a-holes especially if you put becoming a “rock star” on your to do list . Nonetheless the track in all modesty is still a keeper and I’m proud of it, especially as subsequent to that I ended up working with many talented folks and achieving much in the way of writing and recording and @ going on Sixty -Four still do and really have no regrets @ this point . I encourage anybody to check the track out and if also interested to dive into many more still yet to be released broadcast quality recordings on my sound cloud ie www.soundcloud.com/garyratoff . That is in part my story… and I’ll be damned if I deviate from it one iota . 🤙🏽

Luckily Derek St. Holmes was there to put his touch on the vocal parts and everything sounded absolutely perfect just like the albums! My dad and I are both musicians and we could really appreciate the amount of skill, effort and dedication it took to pull off all those fast, hard hitting songs perfectly one right after the other and those tough old guys didn't even break a sweat! Not to name names but we've seen other big time acts from the same era that just did not stand the test of time anywhere near as well as Ted and his bunch. I saw the listing for his auction last year, and it was a lot of items, but I'm sure not everything he owns. I hope he did well.
For those who don't really understand his motivation; Nugent is in his early 70s. He is not young anymore, he is in the last years of his life cycle and he knows it. He also knows he can't take it all with him when he passes. And he has a reputation of buying, collecting, and owning a metric ton of stuff, especially firearms, hunting gear, guitars, etc. He has buildings full of stuff. Like some older folks, he knows he can control the sale of items much better than his heirs, who will likely sell off his estate rather than keep much of it anyways. I'm sure he will still have cars to drive, guitars to play, guns to shoot, just not dozens, hundreds of each.

I saw Ted in the summer of '77 along with about 60K people at Soldier Field in Chicago. The line up was Journey, 38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd And Ted (who arrived in a copter). It was just about a month before Skynyrd went down. I remember finding an oz of good smoke at that show. Ahhh, good times!

My one Ted story is St Patty's Day 1984: Ted and then-rising star Michael Schenker in Sacto. On the radio the day of the show, Ted announced that he would be dancing on the heads of the people in the front rows...which was me and my pals, who occupied nearly the entire second row of the Auditorium.
We were there as much psyched to see the relative-newcomer (to the US scene) Michael as we were to see the wily veteran Ted, who delivered the goods. But not before Michael almost knocked the building down opening the show. He blew the whole place away. People were almost too startled to cheer. Somehow word must have got back to Ted because he brought a monster 3-hour gig and more than once in between songs gave MSG respectful authentic props, saying words to the effect of "holy crap what did we just watch?"

He's getting rid of a '59 Les Paul sunburst? Are you kidding me? How can a guitar that classic and rare not continue to inspire him to keep rocking out? You sure he's not falling on hard times financially? That guitar alone has got to be worth between a quarter and a half million dollars! That's the holy grail of collectible electric guitars right there!
