This top-of-the-line 17-inch thinline (2 1/4 inch deep) guitar weighs just 6.70 lbs. and has a nut width of 1 5/8 inches and a short scale length of 23 1/2 inches. Two-piece carved spruce top with nine-ply binding and single-bound f-holes, one-piece lightly 'flamed' maple back with five-ply binding and heavily 'flamed' maple sides. Heavily 'flamed' two-piece rock maple neck with center mahogany strip and a nice medium-to-thick profile. Multi-bound ebony fretboard with 22 original wide jumbo frets and inlaid pearl block positions markers. Headstock with inlaid pearl "Gibson" logo and pearl flowerpot inlay. Individual Kluson Sealfast tuners with tulip-shaped metal buttons. Black plastic bell-shaped truss-rod cover with wide white binding and two screws. Factory black 'stinger' on back of headstock. Two original PAF 'double-black' humbucker pickups with black plastic surrounds and outputs of 7.45k and 7.60k. Rim mounted jack input. Tortoiseshell pickguard with five-layer (white/black/white/black/white) plastic binding. Four controls (two volume, two tone) all on lower treble bout, plus three-way selector switch on treble horn. Gold plastic bell-shaped knobs. ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic non-retainer bridge with metal saddles on an adjustable rosewood base. Specific three-loop tailpiece with "Byrdland" engraved on the cross-bar. All hardware gold-plated. With the original Gibson orange oval label inside the bass 'f' hole, the style ("Byrdland") written in black ink and the serial number ("A 31257") stamped in black. Stamped in black inside the treble 'f' hole is the factory order number (FON) "S 8258 4". There are a few small marks on the top of the guitar by the bass side of the neck where the players pick has touched the top. There are a few other small marks and indentations and some overall fine body checking. The neck and sides are heavily flamed and the back is lightly flamed. There are three small splits in the binding on the treble side of the fretboard, but nothing that needs to be touched. This totally original excellent plus (8.75) example is one of only eighty Byrdlands made in 1959 of which forty-six were finished in sunburst and thirty-four in natural. Housed in its original Gibson brown five-latch hardshell case with pink plush lining (8.50).
The pointy cut is the Florentine cut; just wanted to point that out. Philtastic!
That's right.
Man, that All Along The Watchtower is so awesome, that the word 'awesome' is not good enough to describe the true awesomeness of that piece!
I love these videos because you get to hear the individual, distinctive, vintage tones
of great guitars. Awesome!
13 years later, I hope you took that one home with you!
Phil X you are entertaining that's for sure. One heck of a musician. I don't care what these other people say. You pick the crap out of a guitar. Not a rock fan but man you can lay it down no matter what guitar you have. Enjoy you energy!!!
Thanks for the Ted. My dad was a big fan and it was the soundtrack to my childhood. It sends a shiver down my spine even now...
Does anybody else Miss phil X? because this dude's actually funny and a rockstar
Now that is a beautiful sounding guitar! If I were in the US I'd probably drive across the country just to come and buy it!
Dude, I could watch dude rock forever. So likable.
Phil - You are an extremely talented musician. Love you man!
I'm not ashamed to say I love these videos!!
omg.. that solo was like the best solo i've heard in that key and clean sound :P
Yeah, Rock it Phil. Thanks FA. Another fine video.
Great player
I swear this is the best video yet.... And seeing Phil playing with himself was amazing ;). I challenge Phil to do some Pat Travers.
Phil X is funny and he doesn't seem arrogant.
He knows he's a good guitarist so he has fun with it. Simple as that.
all along the watchtower !!! Jimi Hendrix :D
these videos make me practice my guitar more XD
great job phil your defiantly one of my influences!
Ive never seen this guitar before. I love that it has the less paul custom neck and head and humbuckers...amazing
Actually, a Florentine cutaway is the one Nugent uses (the pointy one). Venetian is the rounded one, as on this guitar. Multiple (reliable) online sources will confirm this.
this things sounds beautiful, especially during the looped part, lovely tone
damn..that hollowly body sounds good!! ..love the watchtower bit. Great job on Homebound...always a favorite Nugent track.
Phil. Thanks for not fuckin up man. Thanks for staying with us over the years and continuing to progress. Thanks. You are the best man.
I would come in and jam with Phil any day!
Like this dude...funny attitude and some sweet licks--he seems to know 'em all. One nitpick: he has it backwards; he's playing a Venetian cutaway...the Florentine is sharp (like the one Uncle Ted plays). Keep rockin' antway!
I missed you man.. Every morning I tune in to your videos and I'm so hyper throughout the day, I get so much stuff done that in the evening I wonder was this a day or a whole week?..Thanks for being awesome:)
The loop pedal was a genius idea. Please keep using it!
Wow.. I'm just speechless. What a nice loop jam!
I want that neck pu tone!
Phil, saw you on Ellen the other day filling in for Richie, I saw that White One pickup guitar and told my Wife that gotta be Phil-X. Jam up job man.
Phil next time you do one of these vids, give me a head's up. I'll jam with you. I'm damn good at the guitar and will play rhythm in such a way you will sound even better than you do now... and you sound INCREDIBLE!!
Love the tone on this one. Nice mixing it up with the looper!
phil x u did a great video i really enjoyed the nugent and hendrix all along the watchtower
Seriously, the Looper has to stay! I experienced a massive eargasm from that.
@JHendrixxxxx Hey, Chris!! Of COURSE I watch Phil!! He's just an AWESOME personality and player! Plus, I LOVE it when he sings while he plays - he makes it seem so SIMPLE. It's so HARD to do that!! GREAT to see you again, Chris!
Awesome vid, I think the florentine cut is the pointy one though.
awesome as always!!!
Requests..... Train Kept a Rollin' - Aerosmith
Misty Mountain Hop - Led Zeppelin
Parisenne Walkways - Gary Moore
Roundabout - Yes
Little Wing - Your Version
On whichever guitars you feel fit....just would be cool to hear....keep up the awesomeness!
wow, that all along the watch tower was mind blowing!
@CCRockit the one difference that I like is the larger headstock on the jonas model and it also has two p 90s.I think the only spot where you can tell its a jonas brothers model is by the pick guard where they all hand signed it but that part is easily thrown into the trash. And lastly it is priced under 700 bucks which ain't a bad deal IMO
Bought a used 1999 Epiphone 335 Korean model, just as good in my opinion, and 20 times cheaper. Plays like butter enriched with fantastic gravy and a biscuit on the side, with an ice cold beer. No brainer, action is off the charts.
all along the watchtower, hell yeah
niiiiice jam phil ... love you playing and this guitar
please do the starvation from the greek rock band Socrates drunk the conium
Homebound was killer!
I hadn't heard Home Bound since the 80s on my 8 track. Yes it was killer!
worth the wait
loop more often! it sounds sweet!
my favourite guitar.
This Brydland looks a lot like of my Gibson Emperor-VS Epiphone same type of body, same neck the head of guitar though is inlaid Epiphone, and also the Gibson. Very nice sounding I like it.
Yay @ Smokin' in the Boys Room
Nice demo buddy! That's right, Ted Nugent was playing hard rockin distorted riffs on a guitar that was never intended to sound like that. Ted is truly a guitar innovator
Willie McGee : Ted's a jackass.
NICE!! ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER!!
go phil man u rock as allways
I think this guitar is my favorite so far. Second is the Steelcaster that had the reggae finish. Love these videos!
Totally agree- the Steelcaster is a legend of a beast
I go or the tea-burst 59 Gibson LP standard. I'll give my rightarm to own and play that one. Uhhmm.....better take my right foot..♪♫
phil is certainly a great guitarist, but i would love to hear him play some jazz on this beautiful Byrdland.
I think Mr.X got his cutaway names mixed up. Good to have such a pro giving info on this instrument! lol :0)
@kleinball
i would if i could. i SUCK at jazz. LOVE listening to the greats but my thing is the ROCK!!!!
love phil, but the editing of these videos is hilarious as well. can't get enough.
@2bodoni it's called a line 6 stompbox modeler : )
@johnnytronics Phil responded to another of our followers to almost this exact
"i would if i could. i SUCK at jazz. LOVE listening to the greats but my thing is the ROCK!!!!"
Good god that is a beautiful guitar!
Wow I never seen a vintage guitar that offered amazing tone!!
Its more amazing than a fender telecaster
Thus is so worth as little as $8,000
1:47 OMG that middle tone!!
Phil...the looper you used. Was that going through the same amp you were soloing on?
should really do some jazz demos on a beautiful archtop like that. it brings out its true nature
***** He's better than you, pal!
I must admit - i do miss the tonemaster :)
nice guitar and loop pedal
I really missed a Phil X video, my week wasn't the same as the others.
nice it's good to hear these vintage guitars demoed by someone who can actually ply, nice jod, lucky buzzard
Could you guys do that les paul on the right behind the wine red one with the awsome flame top!
How does he keep all these tunes in his head!?!
I was about to start having the shakes waiting for the next demo to come out but I'm OK now that I got my dose of PX on F/A :)
i really enjoyed watching you use the looker xD
What is the guitar in the top right corner in the background with the flame top? Looks like a Les Paul
@MetalBluesRock I'm sure it was All Along The Watchtower solo, well the first 10 seconds, literally. After that it was improv. Absolutely superb, I'm stealing some of those licks for my bands cover of the song!
Sorry to sorta guitar geek out on ya but the florentine cut is the pointy one and the Venetian is the rounded one
evil robot is sweet...sounds awsome.
It sounds....clean...just very nice. Its like the water of guitars....no doubt its good, but it just has no special tones. Its just an extremely nice one
@MetalBluesRock
the intro was hendrix's "all along the watchtower" and then
just feelin' it. thanks.
I'm guessing it's a BOSS.
Who has inifo on this 'looper' he is using? What's the brand? etc. any info? Thanks
You've got Venetian and Florentine backwards dude. I have a 1968 Byrdland. It's Florentine.
Dyslexia? Or maybe too much of the illicit substances? I love the guy though - he's always crazy funny...!
Collectors all know the diff I'm sure, and PX is reading the weights and scale lengths right off the prompter/cards and not an expert collector. He's a PLAYER and I so miss these videos. (that's what they do).I'll rewatch them just like old movies...
@2bodoni Pretty sure Phil uses the looper that's built in to the Line 6 M9 pedal man.
Was Phil using the loop function from the M9?
Looper is awesome...
eargasm!
Please demo that guit next to the ac 30!
There's a good reason for that, Professor Einstein.
What kind of looper did Phil use in the vid ?
What was that thing he did in the middle position?
Did Phil cut his hair? But I liked it!
Also what is a thinline? I thought if it was wide like that it wasn't thinline. Is that like semihollow maybe? Like it has a tone black?
Be cool if he explored the jazz sound of some of these guitars.
Awesome, but Phil just mixed up the Florentine and Venesian. Ted used the Florentine, this is the Venesian
@xdivinebladex
yes.
It is Watchtower The beginning it's note for note.
@mcbr3b Day Tripper - The Beatles. One of the most recognized guitar riffs of all time. Not that your question is bad or anything but totally check out the Beatles!
Dam Phil knows how to handle that thing!
@Aforhead72 WHich song???? the loop is all around the watch tower
@Aforhead72 sounds like it could be a variation of all along the watchtower by jimi hendrix
What? Isn't the Florentine cut the pointy one and this the Venetian?
The pointy cut is definitely the version I have on my Byrdland. Unlike Ted though, I have flatwounds on it and use it mostly for playing jazz.
what song is in the credits at the end??
@NorthernSoul92 does he EVER diappoint?
