  • In this video we will change the antifreeze/coolant in the 1998 Honda Valkyrie GL1500CT with the Flat 6 Cylinder (F6C) engine. I will be restoring this bike and customizing it. It will get a lot of re-chroming and a custom paint scheme as well as replacing broken and deteriorating parts. The bike has 16,000 miles on it but it has terrible cosmetic issues which I believe were caused by outside storage in all kinds of poor weather and direct sun.
Per the factory service manual, Honda only specifies "a 50/50% Ethylene Glycol coolant" rather than an OEM recommended coolant. I was surprised they didn't have a statement like "use only Honda specific coolant bla bla bla". No mention of that, so I choose to go to my local Honda Auto dealer and bought a couple gallons of the Type 2 Honda Blue coolant as I use in my personal car, a Honda CRV. It is "specially formulated to protect aluminum engines and the related cooling system components from corrosion and deterioration". It is both silicate and borate free. The old stuff that came out appeared to be the same blue coolant. It is a 5 year or 60,000 mile coolant per Honda.
Here are a few links to the coolant and products I used in this video. I purchased all items and products in the video and I have zero sponsorship for anything I recommend. If I like the product, I'll link it.
Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more videos on this and other projects.

I’m a retired Harley mechanic and about 10 years ago I got a chance to ride one and fell in love with it, to tell you the truth I’ve never enjoyed riding as much as I do now on one of these, I bought about 5 of these was down to 2 of them now I’m just keeping the interstate for my coast to coast rides or just long rides, can’t beat the comfort, reliability and power, enjoy yours I paid $2000 for the one I have now it only had 5000 miles on it now I have 90,000 miles with no problems just oil brakes and tires

Ya, they are a blast to ride. Check out my test ride video. I do a ~150 mile ride which was my first actual ride on one. My intent was to buy one and do a custom build. I got right into a very detailed disassembly, lots of photos and video. I bought a whole supply of various sized commercial zip lock baggies small to large and label each part or group of parts and pack the baggies into cardboard boxes with careful labeling. I don't intend to produce a "basket case". I got it about half way, working in my suburban 2 car garage, and then I stumbled onto a home in the country with a huge shop.
Two huge bays. A storeroom, a bathroom, an office, a nice big workshop and a rental apartment on the second level over the workshop area, which is rented out. The catch was... it was built by a contractor and he filled it with construction stuff and never finished it. Most of the electrical wasn't done. The walls and 18' ceilings were only 1/3rd sheathed, no interior doors or flooring in the office, storeroom and toilet. Two 4' shop lights in the bays. It was dark as a cave in there. The house is beautiful but again... largely a project. It sits on two rural acres with the obligatory duck pond.
I had to have it for the shop and the country living aspect. So I hit the ground running. I have the shop 90% done. The 18' ceilings were just wide open and most walls. I bought a used scissor lift to do the work. The big doors were shot. I tell ya, It's been 8-10 hours a day for months. I built a 6X6 building next to it for my shop air compressor. Piped air underground into the back wall. Finished all the interior walls and painted it bright white. Put in 10 L.E.D. high bay lighting units. I did all the wiring including two 240vac outlets for my welder. I built a beautiful 3/4" steel pipe wall mounted air system with 14 outlets in the bays. I'm in the process of building high shelving for lesser used stuff. I have the workshop area to go. I need to build cabinets, and extend the air system into there from the bays. I'm also buying a Wildfire 10,000 pound Car Lift. My bike lift will easily fit inside the workshop with all my machines, lathe, vapor hone and blasting cabinet. Huge project. Plus the house stuff I've done and the property work. I hope to have it all done by summer and then, I can get back to work on the Valkyrie. Right now it's in the corner of the unfinished workshop gathering a lot of saw dust. Thanks for watching and commenting. I've had zero time to make any TH-cam videos since the move last March. I appreciate you. Best Regards, Craig

Thanks for posting this, I have 2000 standard model with about 35k, I also bought mine recently for a good deal and it's showing signs of needing some TLC. These videos are super helpful and enlightening. I've worked on cars all my life but don't have much experience with bikes.

Hey there! Thanks for taking the time to comment! I agree these bikes are wonderful. I just got home from the Sturgis Rally. I’ve been gone 3 weeks. But I’m back now and just about ready to take on the disassembly. Stand by!

Hey Chris. There are more to come. Try as I might things keep getting put on my schedule and the weather is just starting to cooperate. I had to leave town for 4 days. It was Diane's and my 44th wedding anniversary yesterday and so we took a trip over to sunny hot Eastern WA with the RV to celebrate. We head home today. The upside is I made time to pressure wash our entire fence back home so it's ready to spray the stain on as soon as I get back today. I have all my other stuff done so when the fence is done, I have the rest of the summer off to play with the new Valk.
The next video was planned to be the long awaited test ride of ~130 miles on a rural farm country loop west of Interstate 5 to the South of Olympia through several very small rural towns. I plan on mounting 3 GoPros and a helmet mic. I have only ridden the bike 1/2 mile so it should be a real eye opener as I don't know if the bike is wonderful or if it sucks due to mechanical and ride-ability issues. Don't know. It starts and runs great up on the lift though, lol.
However my new wet blasting cabinet from Vapor Honing Technologies has arrived from NC and is at the freight depot ready for delivery either tomorrow, Sat or on Tues. I'll be doing an unboxing video on that. I also have another unboxing to do on a Big Red motorcycle jack/lift. I think I'll need it to get the engine out and moved around the shop.
A project like this requires I set myself up with the tools and equipment to do it properly. So, the lift table and the air system videos are a result of that. If I'm set up properly, the job should flow smoothly and not have a disappointing end result.
So, thanks for the views and the comment. I hope the next video will be coming this week. Cheers! Craig

@@usethenoodle Happy Anniversary! 44 years is quite an accomplishment! Always yard repairs to do! I am working on power washing my house which is a multiple day task. :) I have two Valkyries (1998 Tourer and 1999 Standard) Keep making videos. I have an RV also and was out west as far as Utah last year. Expensive to drive this year with gas prices. Happy 4th of July! Chris

Excellent video Craig! I'll be picking up a very nice red/black '99 Valk Interstate soon (my first touring bike). Question -- should the bike temp be enough to open the thermostat in order to get the air out and fully circulate the fluid to get an accurate level reading in the tank?

Hi Jordan! Great. My Valkyrie project is temporarily stalled as I set up in my new shop. Still lots to do before I can get back to it. I appreciate your comment and watching my video! Here's what I do. I top off the radiator, then fill the coolant tank to the cold line. Then, go for a ride. Let things cool overnight and recheck the coolant tank again in the morning. It will probably be OK but add as needed to bring it to the cold level. Warmest regards, Craig

Hi Craig, I have a standard 1998. It has a buildup of a black residue at the pipe looking things going from the carbs to the cylinder head. Sorry I don’t know the name of it. I suppose a gasket needs replacing. Do you have a video on that or could you tell me what to do to fix it? Thanks

    • @usethenoodle

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you are talking about. Can you expand?

    • @barryroach4813
      @barryroach4813 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

i think they are called intake runners. they are the small c shaped tubes going from the cylinder to the carbs. There are 6 of them. There is a black residue where they connect to the cylinder head which leads me to believe the seal s broken. Do you have a video on how to replace the gaskets.@@usethenoodle

@@barryroach4813 Hi Barry. Is your bike a California emissions bike? If it is, you'll have the cylindrical black charcoal EVAP canister under the frame near the face of the rear tire. You will also have the PAIR valve under the tank. Tell me if you have the canister under the bike. I don't have a specific video on that. I only have what you see on my channel. Perhaps you can send me a photo or two pointing out the issue? Look to the bottom of the video description and you will see "About" me. My email is listed there. Here's the deal. I was just getting into the tear down of my California Emissions bike, when I found a house in the country, with an unfinished shop. A large shop. So I stopped, sold my house and bought this place. That was last March. I'm in the process of finishing my shop and won't be back to normal, making videos until sometime next summer. But I want to help you out if I can. It sounds to me like you have California emissions on your bike. I believe your issue is related to that. If you'll point out the issue in a photo or two I can consult the factory manual and probably help you figure it out. I'll be doing a full delete of my California emissions and a carb re-jetting as part of my video series when I get back to it. There are Desmog videos on TH-cam you may want to look at.
