I found Tom Petty in 1976 ! I was 17 , almost 18 that summer and American Girl hit me right in the heart ❤️ ! I graduated high school and began my “adult” life listening to this music . 9 years later I saw them live at Merryweather Post Pavilion in MD and got married that same summer ! My marriage didn’t last but my love for Tom’s music is as strong today as it was then . I missed my chance to see them in 2017 when they were here and have been kicking myself in the ass ever since ! Never pass up an opportunity as you may not get it again ! R.I.P. !

Feel exactly the same way. He remains the only person outside of my immediate family that I ever mourned, and for whatever reason I mourn him still, far longer than anyone else. His music just spoke to my soul and in that he was unique, and somehow connected to who I am. Thank you Tom for everything.

TOM PETTY , AND HIS GROUP ARE SOME OF THE BEST SONGWRITERS, MUSICIANS THAT EVER CAME OUT OF AMERICA, THEY ARE SO UNDERRATED IT MAKES ME SICK, THEY DO NOT PLAY SOUTHERN ROCK, LIKE YOU THINK THEY WOULD COMING OUT OF FLORIDA, THEY PLAY AMERICAN MUSIC, ROCK ON GUY'S YOU ARE AWESOME, COUSIN FIGEL

    • @markuspritsch7810

The only reason he was 'underrated' was because he made the wrong people angry, twice. By his own admission in a later interview, he was still 'paying for it'. Despite record companies shunning him and making sure he didn't get awards, he and the band got around it and we're successful anyway. Pretty amazing.

I remember, the days after the shock of his death, some guy on a forum I frequent, protesting that Tom Petty was being referred to as a 'legend'. He genuinely couldn't see what he'd ever done to warrant the description. The fact that he could barely name a single song of his might be a little clue as to why he felt that way.

Recorded in Tulsa around the same time as "Don't Do Me Like That" it was a pleasure to play bass on this song! It's the song that caught Leon Russell's attention, and the rest is history! ight from a window
    Cold dark and black
    Sound from a dream
    I was hypnotized
    I was paralyzed
    I could hardly speak
    Baby
    Baby
    You never realized
I could have stood there lost in your eyes
    Stood there waiting
    And not realized
    Love isn't easy
    It isn't always kind
But I could have stood there lost in your eyes
    I guess I understand it
I guess I kind of have to
I guess I kind of see
Just because it could have been
It doesn't mean it had to
    Ever mean a thing
    Baby
    Baby
I could say that all the time
I could have stood there lost in your eyes
    Stood there waiting
    And not realized
    Love isn't easy
    It isn't always kind
I could have stood there lost in your eyes
And you know sometimes I wonder
    You know sometimes I wonder
    I really really do
    Really really do
    Just because it helps me
You know sometimes it scares me
    I guess you wouldn't know
    I guess you wouldn't know
    I guess I understand it
I guess I kind of have to
I guess I sort of see
Just because it could have been
    Doesn't mean it had to
    Ever mean a thing
    But baby
    Baby
I think about it time and time
And I could have stood there lost in your eyes
    Stood there waiting
    And never realized
    Love isn't easy
    Isn't always kind
But I could have stood there lost in your eyes
    I could have stood there

Awesome to hear Petty's original version of this song. I know a lot of folks will be surprised by this, but in 1985 Don Johnson did a pretty good version of this song (with Bonnie Raitt). He played with a lot of very good musicians on his version. Most people don't think kindly about Don Johnson's musical career, but his good taste in this Tom Petty gem (and surrounding himself with good musicians) makes it worth a listen.

    • @nashburnette
      @nashburnette 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Don Johnson's HEARTBEAT was a fantastic album ... Almost every song was good enough
to have been a single ..... But don't forget that six years later in 1992, The Jeff Healey Band
did a great cover of "Lost In Your Eyes" on their album, FEEL THIS.
It was released as a single in 1993 and charted low at #91.
It was only The Jeff Healey Band's 2nd chart single, after "Angel Eyes".

ratter531 Re read my post and man do I sound old. I wrote that before Toms death not that its relevant but man I’m devastated still. I knew him and Howie were fucking with that shit. We know what happened to Howie but for Tom it was prescribed meds that got him. I know this is probably taboo stuff but I feel it’s all hardcore fans here. I got hooked for 15 years so I can’t knock it. I mean anyone that’s ever done opiates just listen to Echo. That album has such a opioid flavor I get a buzz just thinking about it. Anyway word is it was fentanyl and some other prescribed shit, anyway when your Tom Petty you can get what ever you want. To bad he was to young and Hypnotic eye their last album is Epic! I saw them 15 times starting at Winterland in August of 1978 SanFrancisco Ca. The show is posted here on YT. I was 17 and the last time second row Oakland Ca 2016 I was 49. I’m 58 now. Been a fan since day one when their first album came out in 1976. Back then all the shows were general admission and I’m a big guy so we always got up front arms on the stage. T.P. Was super skinny and to be frank seemed like he was coked up and then when Stevie Nicks came into his life well, we all know how deep her use went. Imagine that, Rock Stars, the 70s and 80s Cocaine. Ya think? Anyway he use to shake between songs when he would talk, remember I was arms on the stage most shows. Anyway those were also the Stan Lynch days when the band was always giving it all they had not that it ever changed but it did get a bit tamer as they got older. They got so huge too in their own way I maean Bob Dylan, Gorge Harrison, Roy Orbison! The big names go on and on of other musicians they worked with. Then the Mudcrutch stuff and reuniting . There’s so much to their story. I grew up with the band and I love their story. If you haven’t sat down and watched their four hour band history and life stories video you need to. I have seen it a million times although the title escapes me LMAO (STONED) Anyway I could go on and on but I’m just glad I got to see them as many time as I did and glad they will always be part of my life. R.I.P. Tomas Earl Petty ✝️ Howie Epstein ✝️

I’m 54 in 2020, the 70s and 80s seem like yesterday . Bit I’m reminded every year that it isn’t 1980 anymore when we lose another artist from the days when we were just kids! In my heart I so feel 30s! How do you except death when you feel so young? How do you leave the people who aren’t as strong as you when you know they need you? How do you deal with what is so close?

Great stuff here. Actually from what I've heard of the early versions of Mudcrutch, they are much more melodic than anything Petty has done w/ the Heartbreakers. Well, Petty's stuff has plenty of a melodic side to it. It's just a different style completely than this. I love both era's though!

Love this song, but it is an alternate recording and performance of "Lost In Your Eyes" by Mudcrutch . The official version of this song is found in the box set titled: "Tom Petty: An American Treasure", which was released in both CD and vinyl formats.

I WOULD OF GAVE ANYTHING JUST TO SHAKE TOM'S HAND AND THANK HIM FOR EVERYTHING. I HAVE FOLLOWED TOM PETTY AND THE BAND FROM THE VERY BEGINNING ON AND WILL CONTINUE TO WITH ALL THE SONGS HE WROTE AND RECORDED BUT NEVER RELEASED TILL NOW. HIS TRUE BROTHERS IN THE BAND AND HIS DAUGHTER AND WIFE ARE DOING A GREAT JOB WITH IT. I NEVER CRIED SO HARD AS WHEN I HEARD THE NEWS AND I WILL ALWAYS WISH HE WAS STILL HE WITH US ALL. AT MY HOUSE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN "JUST THE NORMAL NOISES IN HERE" AND ALWAYS WILL BE.

Don Johnson covered it in 1986 on HEARTBEAT and
The Jeff Healey Band covered it in 1992 on FEEL THIS.
The Jeff Healey Band version was a chart single at #91 in 1993.
All three versions, Mudcrutch, Don Johnson, Jeff Healey Band, are excellent in their own right.

I'll give credit to Petty as an AMAZING artist, performer and songwriter - but Jeff Healey just took this thing and pushed it over the edge - just one musicians opinion. Surprisingly - Don Johnson (yes that Miami Vice Don Johnson) actually pulled off a pretty cool version too - -SRV played guitar on his...kinda add's to Don's cool factor!

Does anyone know when and where exactly this was recorded? I’m guessing it was around 1972-1973. I know sometimes they’d record music in Benmont’s parents living room back then.
