I found Tom Petty in 1976 ! I was 17 , almost 18 that summer and American Girl hit me right in the heart ❤️ ! I graduated high school and began my “adult” life listening to this music . 9 years later I saw them live at Merryweather Post Pavilion in MD and got married that same summer ! My marriage didn’t last but my love for Tom’s music is as strong today as it was then . I missed my chance to see them in 2017 when they were here and have been kicking myself in the ass ever since ! Never pass up an opportunity as you may not get it again ! R.I.P. !
Feel exactly the same way. He remains the only person outside of my immediate family that I ever mourned, and for whatever reason I mourn him still, far longer than anyone else. His music just spoke to my soul and in that he was unique, and somehow connected to who I am. Thank you Tom for everything.
Gainesville loved him!!! I never met him personally because I was younger. But I saw him play in the 70s at the University campus. Life was so much better back then. 🥰❤💗💖
I met Tom in 1990, and I still am in tears, to know he is not writing songs anymore...I miss him ever so deeply..He was such a nice person, and a musical genius...
Recorded in Tulsa around the same time as "Don't Do Me Like That" it was a pleasure to play bass on this song! It's the song that caught Leon Russell's attention, and the rest is history! Thank you Warren Zanes for putting this in your book, Petty, The Biography. #RockinPeaceTomPetty th-cam.com/video/NcbvaRzBzbE/w-d-xo.html

Your favorite from WHAT album ???? ..... This was unreleased from 1974 and never included on an album. It was never available until it was included this year (2018) on his new box set, AN AMERICAN TREASURE.
This song is KILLER! This song is a lethal weapon it’s so beautiful. Like Jackson Brown said, Tom Petty says so much with such few words. “Just because it could of been, doesn’t mean it had to....ever mean a thing.”. I was.............
TOM PETTY , AND HIS GROUP ARE SOME OF THE BEST SONGWRITERS, MUSICIANS THAT EVER CAME OUT OF AMERICA, THEY ARE SO UNDERRATED IT MAKES ME SICK, THEY DO NOT PLAY SOUTHERN ROCK, LIKE YOU THINK THEY WOULD COMING OUT OF FLORIDA, THEY PLAY AMERICAN MUSIC, ROCK ON GUY'S YOU ARE AWESOME, COUSIN FIGEL
The only reason he was 'underrated' was because he made the wrong people angry, twice. By his own admission in a later interview, he was still 'paying for it'. Despite record companies shunning him and making sure he didn't get awards, he and the band got around it and we're successful anyway. Pretty amazing.
I remember, the days after the shock of his death, some guy on a forum I frequent, protesting that Tom Petty was being referred to as a 'legend'. He genuinely couldn't see what he'd ever done to warrant the description. The fact that he could barely name a single song of his might be a little clue as to why he felt that way.
As long as you are lost in my eyes, I will never be just a face in the crowd. It’s a beautiful thing. Rest on in the ever after, Mr. Petty. Thank you for everything, it’s Good to be King.
Incredibly beautiful song that nobody knows...they should play this on TP Radio/Satellite. Agree that Don Johnson did a great tribute to this song. RIP Tom Petty; miss you and your magical songs so much...
My thoughts to a T, never thought I'd miss a musician like Jerry Garcia, and then I lost Tommy, and it was like Jerry x 20. Rest in peace, even though you didn't know it, you were my friend, and through your music, always will be.
Tom Petty is so talented.. I have. a old friend how recorded me some Mudcrutch on CDs for me .. I'm so excited to listen n have been listening to Tom since I've been a teenager. He so talented !!,💖✌👍
Bud Binner still listening and still crying. God only knows why. I will always love Toms music, and he really was a great guy. He treated us like old friends, I'm glad I had the chance to know him.
Tom is gone and so is our youth, at 54 I lay here on a Sunday morning 2020sept27. Life goes by as fast as a song, yet the sorrow and mistakes seem to be what we remember most, time to face the lord is in the palm of our hands!
Jeff Healy had a hit with this song some time ago...I always new Tom wrote it but I could not find his version.....never new he did it with Mudcrutch....Tom can really write some touching songs when he wants to...I don't know why all of the Mudcrutch catalogue wasn't included on the box set.....there was only a few Mudcrutch tunes included.....

I’m 54 in 2020, the 70s and 80s seem like yesterday . Bit I’m reminded every year that it isn’t 1980 anymore when we lose another artist from the days when we were just kids! In my heart I so feel 30s! How do you except death when you feel so young? How do you leave the people who aren’t as strong as you when you know they need you? How do you deal with what is so close?
“Just because it could of been doesn’t mean it had to.....ever mean a thing. Just like Jackson Brown said, Tom Petty could say so much with so few words. RIPTom Petty.♥️✌️
Awesome to hear Petty's original version of this song. I know a lot of folks will be surprised by this, but in 1985 Don Johnson did a pretty good version of this song (with Bonnie Raitt). He played with a lot of very good musicians on his version. Most people don't think kindly about Don Johnson's musical career, but his good taste in this Tom Petty gem (and surrounding himself with good musicians) makes it worth a listen.
Don Johnson's HEARTBEAT was a fantastic album ... Almost every song was good enough to have been a single ..... But don't forget that six years later in 1992, The Jeff Healey Band did a great cover of "Lost In Your Eyes" on their album, FEEL THIS. It was released as a single in 1993 and charted low at #91. It was only The Jeff Healey Band's 2nd chart single, after "Angel Eyes".
I've always loved the Jeff Healey version of this song, but did not at all realize it was written by Tom Petty. Hearing this version of it makes me think about how I could not have known that before. Miss you, Tom.
Young kids today don't understand long hair and music like this. Sad they are walking around with these rap songs in their head. I guess every generation looks at the generations after theirs and wonders. I'm glad I'm from the same one as these guys because I'm one of them long hair and all.

ight from a window
Cold dark and black
Sound from a dream
I was hypnotized
I was paralyzed
I could hardly speak
Baby
Baby
You never realized
I could have stood there lost in your eyes
Stood there waiting
And not realized
Love isn't easy
It isn't always kind
But I could have stood there lost in your eyes
I guess I understand it
I guess I kind of have to
I guess I kind of see
Just because it could have been
It doesn't mean it had to
Ever mean a thing
Baby
Baby
I could say that all the time
I could have stood there lost in your eyes
Stood there waiting
And not realized
Love isn't easy
It isn't always kind
I could have stood there lost in your eyes
And you know sometimes I wonder
You know sometimes I wonder
I really really do
Really really do
Just because it helps me
You know sometimes it scares me
I guess you wouldn't know
I guess you wouldn't know
I guess I understand it
I guess I kind of have to
I guess I sort of see
Just because it could have been
Doesn't mean it had to
Ever mean a thing
But baby
Baby
I think about it time and time
And I could have stood there lost in your eyes
Stood there waiting
And never realized
Love isn't easy
Isn't always kind
But I could have stood there lost in your eyes
I could have stood there

Don Johnson did a really nice cover of this. It's one of my favorite Petty songs.
That was a good album -- Heartbeat -- a lot of good songs, including this one, and better than most people expected.
And then The Jeff Healey Band rocked it in 1992.
I love both covers by Don Johnson and The Jeff Healey Band.
RIP, thanks for the great music!
Tom Petty can do anything:)
Thank you Tom for the magical gifts you gave us all.

What a freaky pic of Tom! Love it!...and of course, Tom Petty was one of the greatest. Nice song.
Simply amazing...just a glimpse into the future of a songwriter and performer that amassed one of the best catalogues of modern music ever
Beautiful piano by Benmont.

I think "Mudcrunch" should tour.
You mean Mudcrutch.
They, did, twice, in 2008 and 2016. Yes, another tour would have been great. Sigh.
Jeff Healy"s song was Angel Eyes and not this song written by Tom petty while with his band Mudcrutch
Thank you Leon Russell.
Brilliant ❤❤
Terrific. Check out The Searchers version if you get a chance.
Very good song,i like a lot the cover of jeff healey band in the 1993
Doesn't Jeff Healey have a version of this song?
Yes he does it the best
Does anyone know when and where exactly this was recorded? I’m guessing it was around 1972-1973. I know sometimes they’d record music in Benmont’s parents living room back then.
So missed yet!
Benmont is amazing
. . . and that is an understatement. He is humble, too.
I like this version more than the remaster! Not much for the horns they added
Where can I get the version of this song with the horns I can't find it anywhere
Jee, I wondered who played the bass?
This was recorded around 1974 as far as I can figure 💘
