I just read about you in the Tom Petty biography! Talk about rock and roll! You guys were AMAZING! I hope we get a big compilation album of all the early Mudcrutch stuff. I’d listen to the heck out of it. “Depot Street” and “On the Street” are some of my favorite songs!
Always thought this was a "Heartbreakers song!! I'm watching Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: R.D.a.D. 4 hrs wholly shit?????...….... well I gotta finish! R.I.P to a Legend Tom Petty Gainesville,Florida U.S.A.!!
Can really hear some Motown/Jackson 5 in this, particularly in the rhythm guitar part of the chorus. Not to give all the credit to Tom... According to Wikipedia, TP was inspired by a meeting with Elvis. Clearly he was listening to a broad range of music by the time Mudcrutch formed: Reggae, Bob Dillon (vocal style) as well as the Motown mentioned above. Can't believe he's been gone since '17. I still feel the loss.
yes! Let's hear it for the bass player!!! :) in '75, it was a lot of fun recording with Tom in the studio in Tulsa at Leon's house and in Encino, CA where this track was recorded. I'm glad they kept this Mudcrutch version with the bass track on it. God Bless ya Tom! #RIPTomPetty ~ charliesouza.com
Guitars and vocals are fantastic, i feel like Benmont really kills the DTT version with the Hammond stuff and the mòre realized piano hook on the verses.
The only thing I like more about the Heartbreakers version is the “AND I CANT TAYKE IT NO MOWWAAAR” line. I love to scream this song from the deepest depths of my soul. 😂
Eh, it just sounds different. People tend to think threat when they hear something different as opposed to a version they’ve heard a million times. The DTT version is obviously produced more professionally
Glad you like this version ! I wasn't in many pictures of Mudcrutch in '75, but it was a lot of fun recording with Tom in the studio in Tulsa at Leon's house and in Encino, CA where this track was recorded. I'm glad they kept this Mudcrutch version with the bass track on it. God Bless ya Tom! #RIPTomPetty ~ charliesouza.com

The torpedoes is so much better produced. People tend to like versions that are new just cause they sound fresh from listening to the other so many times.

Tom sounds great on this version...not that he didn't sound great on the DTT album...bur I really like the gritty take on this
Recorded in Leon Russell's legendary Church studio in Tulsa
man this song was there beginings👍
Is it a just a coincedence that this photo looks an awful lot like the cover to "The Notorious Byrd Brothers"?
Mindblowing to discover this! Pretty close to the Heartbreakers classic version, actually
I has a little crisper sound. Tom's voice stands out a lot more in this version. I like it!
Sounds just a bit faster than the Heartbreakers version but indeed gritty and fantastic!
Best version of this song !!! LOVE it !!! ❤️

The official one is done so much better. This one probably just feels fresher cause we’ve heard the official one so many times
Better than the final product.

@@CharlieSouza1 cool. Wouldn’t mind talking to you more about that
Wow!!!!!
i like this version better.
the lead singer of the byrds asked him to do this song cause they are good friends that why he helped record full moon fever. so it is not a rip off.
not true
bull
its like you got three anecdotes wrong.
Supposed to be a J. Geils demo before it was found again and re-recorded. Sounds like J. Geils.
I agree, it would've/should've been a HUGE hit for Geils and Co.
I Thought J. Geils Turned It Down?..Didn't Want It
does sound like Wolf a bit here too.
Tom Petty wrote this song. Are you saying he offered it to J Geils?

Tom made no secret they were huge fans...a nod
Homage to the Notorious Byrd Brothers
