- Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Breakdown [live USA 78']
Rare footage, taken from a USA performance, filmed/recorded at a new years gig in, Santa Monica 1978.
Tom Petty & The Heart Breakers: American rock band founded in 1976 in Gainesville, Florida. Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 (Performer). R.I.P. T.P. (October 20, 1950 - October 2, 2017)
Keep in mind this happened only two years after forming the band...they were destined for greatness
Heard this song when I was 14. Now I´m 60 and love this song still as much as then. R.I.P. Tom, your songs are like medicine to the soul.
A fantastic, very sexy tune from the one and only Mr. Petty backed by the phenomenal Heartbreakers. What a super, amazing talented group! Timeless.
If I had a time machine this is where I would go
Mike Campbell's lead guitar playing and riffs are the frosting on a very tasty cake !
My favourite track of the heartbreakers and my ring tone what a guy what a band absolutely superb saw them in 1978 knebworth U.K.
I love Tom and still mad that he left us still wanting more R.I.P ❤
This song is why I learned to play guitar. RIP Tom Petty, our world is little dimmer now that your star no longer shines in our sky.
There will never be anyone like Tom Petty 💯💯💯💯RIP
😢 Still miss and love him 😔 Rest in Peace Tom Petty ✌️❤️🌼
Best version hands down
Totally agree
Amazing performance! 🎸
This is a fantastic live version… damn
I think this is my favourite Tom Petty live performance. Just hit's all the cilinders at once. Incredible.
Epitome of effortless cool right from the start.
Nice! Had never seen this. They were so young. Man, I was only 23 then myself.
I miss you very much Tom!! It's just not the same without you
DAMN! Never seen this before, but glad I have now! WOW! Saved to faves and I'm sure I'll view it many, many more times.. Thanks.
Best concert ever
LOVE
This is an excellent version, of an excellent song! RIP Tom....Never forgotten!
Absolute fave; this version is the BEST! 💕
Me too. Year out of high school. Humboldt Co.
my favorite Petty song. If choosing 1 is necessary.
Love this... sound is almost like listening to it played in front of me... RIP Tom.
Just a skinny rock n roll boy😊 i love you Tommy
Skinny but strong, tough, resilient.badass
Still miss Tom Petty ! thanks for sharing.
This absolutely needs more views. It's fucking amazing. If I'm not watching it I'm listening to this version on my playlist on repeat. Hands down the best performance of this song ever. RIP Tom. So very sadly missed..
Society, well gen Z is so duMbed down it’s beyond sad…best rock n roll band of all time
This is exactly how they did it for the first 5 years or so. I saw them 17 times starting in 78 and the last time in 2010. A lot of great memories.
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808You’re spot on with that comment bro. 🤘
I think most of his performances of "Breakdown" are epic. It's his best live song hands down. He gets so into it!
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808i’m gen z and i love tom petty with a passion
40+ Years singing along to this, it doesn't age nor have I. Incredible rendition from these 5 Rock Legends,
Ahh, back when Tommy ruled the world!
I'm glad I found this version. Tom was my favorite live performer. Man, I miss him.
What an absolute legend 😵
On the studio version the harmony from the backing girls is fabulous.
There are no female background singers on the studio version
Those are male voices
Very classy, inclusive and enjoyable performance of a great song and the sound production is superb, every instrument is beautifully balanced and crystal clear.
Saw them in CA about this time, had no peer for attitude and charisma.
I’m saw them the following New Years Eve 1979-1980 in Oakland Ca . Another one of 17 shows I attended of theirs over the years starting in 78 at winter land in San Francisco and the last time in Oakland again 2010. A lot of fun and great memories.
RIP Howard Norman Epstein ✝️ RIP Tomas Earl Petty ✝️
smooth yet classic rock & roll. Thank you Tom
The King of Cool
This song….live especially, is so frickin stellar. Ya ya, it’s simple, but in the simplicity is a performance that will open your very soul. ❤ Ah Tom… rock on with Charlie, Jeff and Stevie… I hope you had fun ❤
Thank you so much for this upload....🙏🏻😱🤘🏻
"Theres no sense in pretend .... your eyes give you away😌😘
Pretending. You needed only to repeat what you'd just heard...and you couldn't even manage that.
What is wrong with you?
@@ChiSam_521
Seems to me, that the only thing "wrong" with the person that you keep being the Grammar Police towards, is the fact they have received multiple "likes" for their comments, while you've received zero for your critiques! Lighten up! We were all able to easily feel what the person was expressing.💖That's why no one else critiqued their comments! 🤔
@@rosemarywaldron497 You're very pretentious.
LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me too . What a loss.
A true classic in my eyes.
Wanted to see a live performance in 1976 but this will do he's so amazing
Wow, what a gem. Miss Tom so much.
Love this
So good. I wish I saw Petty during this era. I saw him when he was wasted and did awful. I walked out on the concert. He later apologized on Behind the Music on VH1.
It's alright if you love me
It's alright if you don't
I'm not afraid of you running away honey
I get the feeling you won't
There is no sense in pretending
Your eyes give you away
Something inside you is feeling like I do
We said all there is to say
Baby
Breakdown, go ahead and give it to me
Breakdown, honey take me through the night
Breakdown, now I'm standin' here, can't you see? (ooh-ooh)
Breakdown, it's alright (ooh)
It's alright, it's alright (ooh)
Aah
(Aah-aah)
(Aah-aah)
Breakdown, go ahead and give it to me
Breakdown, honey, take me through the night
(Baby, baby breakdown, ooh-ooh)
Breakdown, now I'm standin' here, can't you see? (ooh-ooh)
Breakdown, it's alright (ooh)
It's alright, it's alright (ooh)

Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

Great find
Seen them in ‘79 at the Portland Civic Center great show. Still play this a lot thank you Tom Petty RIP Mike is carrying on
You 'saw' them...presuming English is your native language.

Really great.
Brilliant! Thanks ♥
Theatrical and shh shakin! 🎶🔥😁😍
Great version of probably my favourite Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song - but for fricking sake - the video takes me back to remembering when vision mixers, producers and directors could ‘do a few clever tricks’ and just spoil the picture.
But as others have mentioned a really great audio mix.
RIP Tom.
The Real Thing!
You could have given me five million guesses and I wouldnt have guessed this was tom petty all this time
You all gotta listen to his version. On his Londo Tour - 1980......though you'll probably have.....
I can’t disagree
Yet please know that some of lovers of music are aging may possibly be experiencing such an overload of and
Well. Hard for some of us to admit that
Our ears
I’m so sorry
Maybe I’m trying to say too much
Let’s just get into a groove of the good vibrations 🫡👍🏻☮️
…….it’s alright!!!
He's so hot
Is it just me or does Tom petty look like napoleon dynamite in the still for this song? 🤣
Love Ray Manzarek from The Doors on keyboard
THATS NOT RAY, GOD people are dumb! Thats Benmont Tench!
I've been searching FOREVER for this version. I heard it on the radio way back when when the world was a whole lot better. Thank you for putting this into the world
💜😎💜
Where the fuk has this been. OMG. Another TH-cam hidden gem. I think some youtube findings could chart again.
Man those drums crystal
Great player, great song writer and wonderful performer!! He's a complete artist, truly one of rock's greatest
This song is an absolute fuckin belter
Great job of the sound engineers! To get such a superb live recording in the 70's you absolutely have to know what you doing.
True!
What you're doing, as in 'you are', is how an English-speaking adult knows to say it.
@@ChiSam_521 : Thanks for clarification. And now lets check your german skills. Oh.. You don't have any? Sad.
@@selli69 Let's, stupid...as in 'let us'. The word lets means allows.

Tom's rap makes this version the best.. IMO
Absolutely clear, and before the band was jaded with playing it.
This was at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. I lived down the street but somehow didn’t know about it. I’m glad I can watch it now. The *whole show* is on TH-cam.
Most iconic performance of all time
Kids today cant handle this music.
Best Song, Best Version
Best version, thanks! Please keep this posted! ✨
such an awesome Wurlitzer riff
Best live recording I know of
Tom we love your band your music and your genius.
Love this song. Pure rock and roll.
Clearly, Tom Petty was having a “breakdown” of his own there on stage!
It's alright to breakdown. I was in a relationship for 12 years year's and I worked so hard and nothing ever came from it. Another song by Tom Petty called "Here comes my girl." Do you know what I mean?"
Mikes gold top with the p90’s sounds so damn good
Heck yeh! Pure gold
❤ perfect sound!
Absolut Cool.👍
He's clearly not alright with her leaving lol
That black Mexican tar sure is alright!♤
It never gets old, high school days, memories
Days breaking down in my 70s carseat!!!
The sound! Pretty decent considering that this was in the 70s!
LOL -- while the audience sang entire first verse of this song when they played it in New York, he sat on the drum riser and sulked like spoiled two-year old!
Such an amazing band. Mike Campbell was completely on fire that night.
The Heartbreakers usually don't get enough credit when people discuss how amazing Tom Petty was. Especially Mike Campbell and Stan Lynch, but they were all incredible musicians
This is incredible, its perfection stings my eyes a little. Just the greatest.
It is the F-ing greatest ever! I wish I would have been there.
Brutal ❤
Ridonkulous
