Brian de Palma is not supposed to be flattering to intellectual critics. And he didn't just make good movies. But with this one, he did a masterpiece. If we want to look for philosophical problems we will find them there. If you just want to see a superbly directed film, full of originality, you will also find them. If you want second or third degree, they're there. If you're looking for good original music, it's there too. But as Brian de Palma has done worse things in other films, so many critics prefer to leave this film in the bottom of the rankings. Too bad.
Half asleep I hear a voice Is it only in my mind Or is it someone calling me someone I failed and left behind To work it out I let them in All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow Come together in me now Face to face I greet the cast Set in silence we begin Companions in an empty room I taste their victory and sin To work it out I let them in All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow Come together in me now A tale of beauty and the beast I defend my soul from those who would accuse me I share the famine and the feast I have been the world and felt it turning seen the jester yearning to amuse me Like a circus on parade Seldom close enough to see I wander through an angry crowd and wonder what became of me To work it out I let them in All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow Come together in me now
I was around back in '74 but I only saw the movie for the first time last night. I have been listening to the soundtrack all day. This track in particular is extraordinarily good.
Paul Williams describe human nature, we are capable of doing bad and good things and the free will God provides us is a treasure we waste because it is harder doing good.
Peter Smernoff we had the soundtrack LP then made cassettes . I still know every word. The Tampa FL band White Witch from the early 70's has similar dreamy sounds.
Almost nobody I come across has ever heard of this movie. An epic masterpiece that deserves more recognition. Paul Williams is such an amazing artist who yet again, gets no respect.
This is one of those films that nobody's hardly ever heard of but once they see it they instantly love it! I don't know anyone who's seen it and says they didn't like it.
I seen this great movie in the theater when I was 8 yrs old and I loved it then and now that I'm older and understand it....i love it even more, I found the phantom of the paradise soundtrack album in a thrift store last year for $1.00 dollar and now it's on my wall....
This song was such a tearjerker for me when I first watched this movie yesterday at home. I felt so bad for Winslow, especially over the fact that he was basically being kept a prisoner in the recording studio by Swan, forced to stay up for hours rewriting his cantata for Phoenix.
And an additional torture - he can only sng in Swan's voice..! I don't know if that was intended when they got Paul Williams to do his singing, but it works...
Wonderful lyricist, amazing music. I saw this upon it's release, I've loved it ever since. Paul should be widely known, especially for The Phantom Pure gold 🎶👏👏
This heartbreakingly beautiful song has haunted me since the summer the film came out. Oddly, a more recent retelling of Faust is Jack Black's "Pick of Destiny" and songs from that are frequently banging around in my head as well.
When this movie came out in '74, a few buddies of mine and I were hired to perform LIVE on stage in between showings. We were just kids in high school, but it got our "ball rolling". Also, I used "Our Love" as the song for my wife and I when we married. We had been high school sweethearts and didn't marry for 8 years. The lyrics fit us well.
It's not really well know. My parents really love movies and have a fucking ton of them, and one day they put it on TV, that's when I realized how good this movie is. But without that I'll be going today without knowing about it.
two the two above...I know the movie has some flaws...but it's not your ordinary musical, in that, every one singing has a band playing behind them...and the music just not coming outta nowhere...a-la Elvis Presley (sorry to the King)...and yes..the Soundtrack did kick-ass and still does....and by the way...I'm from Winnipeg, Manitoba...Home of The Phantom....and the Winnipeg Jets......Power to you....
About 5 years ago, I had the pleasure of watching this with my brother at the New Beverly Theater in LA (the one owned by Tarantino). The place was completely sold out. That night was one of the most fun I’ve ever had. Waiting in the long line and talking with other huge fans of this movie about the music, De Palma, etc. was a blast.
To work it out I let them in All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow Come together in me now As good as anything The Beatles ever wrote.
I agree..that there will be no remake. This movie is a classic rock n' roll tale version of "Phantom of the Opera"....So There be no remake of this movie. A remake of this classic movie would ruin it & let's leave this as it is.
I have loved this movie ever since 1974. It has been on mind a lot lately. I think because it reminds me of when I was young. I show this movie to everyone I can.
Faust + Phantom of the Opera = epic tragic love love story, add in Paul Williams amazing talent and viola! great story, great movie and great soundtrack. I knew all the words to "The Hell Of It", "Faust" and "The Phantom's Theme" when I was 17.
I watched it the day of its release with my mate Eric (RIP). We stayed in the cinema to watch it again, then came back the next day to watch it 2 x again. We were blown away…
I just got done watching the movie for the first time and when I first saw him with the voice-box all I could think of was Griffith merged with Darth Vader lol
I too am a fan of both. Back in the late 70's/early 80's the movie theatre here had Midnight movies and they would show Phantom Of The Paradise and Rocky Horror Picture Show as a double feature.
THANK YOU! I've always felt this too, even as a kid. I can't understand the attraction and reverence to The Rocky Horr.. either. I've always felt that this movie was so superior in every way, especially in its music. So deep, and with its own life Beautiful production. I'm happy it hasn't made a parody of itself because then it just becomes a mockery. Some things are better left to those who truly enjoy them I think.
i saw parts ov this movie when i was probably under 10yrs old...but when i say parts ..i mean small parts..really small...the phantom's face marked me...i remembered his face but didnt even knew the title ...so for many years ..i forgot about it...until i saw it playing on tv like 5-6 yrs ago..so i taped the re run..watched it ..and its my favorite movie since then...im 26 btw..so i wasnt even born when this came out...LOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!
I played the shit out of this album when it was released, I was a kid .... listening to it now many years later I think it warped my little brain I'm still depressed and saddened by the way we treat each other lol
Paul Williams is in the Song Writers Hall of Fame.... Old Fashion Love song put 3 Dog night on the Charts, But His Writing in Paradize is a masterpeice.... I bow to you Pail Williams, With Love and Respect. You are 8 feet tall in my eyes
this film was aground breaking musical! My Fave film of all time, made me into a Musician till today! great songs, a 70s classic psychedelic feel, and what better than Faust!
One of the best movies ever made.
MetroidSigma absoFUCKINGlutely
Without a doubt! I adore this film so much!
You got that right friend
I still can't explain why i love it so much, but I think this is a criminally underappreciated movie.

Half asleep I hear a voice
Is it only in my mind
Or is it someone calling me someone I failed and left behind
To work it out I let them in
All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been
All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow
Come together in me now
Face to face I greet the cast
Set in silence we begin
Companions in an empty room I taste their victory and sin
To work it out I let them in
All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been
All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow
Come together in me now
A tale of beauty and the beast
I defend my soul from those who would accuse me
I share the famine and the feast
I have been the world and felt it turning seen the jester yearning to amuse me
Like a circus on parade
Seldom close enough to see
I wander through an angry crowd and wonder what became of me
To work it out I let them in
All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been
All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow
Come together in me now
adolfo pereira I feel these lyrics in my soul❤️
@@mediadv8 that's the genius of a real artist and craftsman like Paul Williams...
Martha my soul are craying

Paul Williams describe human nature, we are capable of doing bad and good things and the free will God provides us is a treasure we waste because it is harder doing good.
A terrific film and the soundtrack is wonderful, the sort of quality that you expect from Paul Williams. This song is lovely....
Bugsy Malone too.
haunting and sad....
It’s a wonder these songs are not more well known today as they are timeless.
One of the most amazing movie soundtracks EVER.
Peter Smernoff we had the soundtrack LP then made cassettes . I still know every word.
The Tampa FL band White Witch from the early 70's has similar dreamy sounds.
Amen!
Haunting, beautiful, and absolutely timeless.
Almost nobody I come across has ever heard of this movie. An epic masterpiece that deserves more recognition. Paul Williams is such an amazing artist who yet again, gets no respect.

Watched tonight for first time. Never heard of it until I watched the documentary, "De Palma," last night. My favorite song of the film.
I seen this great movie in the theater when I was 8 yrs old and I loved it then and now that I'm older and understand it....i love it even more, I found the phantom of the paradise soundtrack album in a thrift store last year for $1.00 dollar and now it's on my wall....
This song give me chills. Amazing
This is the most pure in heart song I have ever heard....
I adore this film and Paul Williams so much.
Friend just showed me this movie, absolutely loved it.
"Who would accuse me ?"
I love this
This whole album is a masterpiece! How did it not win any awards?
Forever, máster piece❤
I am listening to this beautiful soundtrack as it was always the first time... Without words...
brought back so many memories.
same here both good AND bad..feeling completely nostalgic.
1974 Philly. I remember seeing it twice in a row. I was obsessed with this movie for a long time after. Jim Steinman owes a lot to this 'cantata'.
Winnipeger here! Was 10 in 74 and watched many times during it's year long run.
This song was such a tearjerker for me when I first watched this movie yesterday at home. I felt so bad for Winslow, especially over the fact that he was basically being kept a prisoner in the recording studio by Swan, forced to stay up for hours rewriting his cantata for Phoenix.
I agree

I envy that you are just coming to this movie and loving it. I have loved it for many years and don't quite understand why it isn't more respected.
Wonderful lyricist, amazing music. I saw this upon it's release, I've loved it ever since. Paul should be widely known, especially for The Phantom Pure gold 🎶👏👏
every song in this film is amazing
I know Paul W. wrote a lot of other songs for some great artist, but this movie is what I think of when I hear his name.
For me, it's "The Muppet Movie", and "The Muppet Christmas Carol".
This heartbreakingly beautiful song has haunted me since the summer the film came out. Oddly, a more recent retelling of Faust is Jack Black's "Pick of Destiny" and songs from that are frequently banging around in my head as well.

this song is absolutely beautiful!!
This year will be the 40th anniversary of such a wonderful movie and album!!!
I honestly cannot believe that anyone I have asked about this, say they've never heard of it.

i find the movie really not that good but the soundtracks are amazing
Not the only one my friend....

Moving.
Well you would say that.
PLEASE someone turn this into a Broadway musical!!
RCT3 Rides and more I really want to. (I'd have to ask for Paul Williams' help though.)
I am planing it out to make it my school musical.
Robin Rose keep us up on that🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
It would have to be greatly re-written for stage; for it to work anyway, as it's not tasteful enough to build a big enough audience.
You would have to get TONTO the synth. Good luck with that.
A world-class lyricist....
This song is so dramatic
Paul Williams just pure musical genius.
Had this on cassette, and album, played the crap out of both still love it .
i love this movie so much! and the amazing music! :)

Yes, this is a rare classic that music and musical-lovers should see and hear. Saw the movie when it came out and have loved it since.
He's defiantly has a very soothing tone of voice
One of my favorite movies
1976... tenia 6 años de edad.... recuerdos..... y todavía las escucho!!!
What a masterpiece! Such a beautiful and haunting melody sung with absolute conviction.
out of all the Phantom songs...this is my favorite.
To work it out I let them in
All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been
All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow

I saw it when I was around 10 years old too. I'm 23. I love the movie and i love the works of Paul Williams.
Yes it is. And unforgetable. I first saw it when I was a teenager.
Una de mis canciones favoritas de todos los tiempos
haunting yet beautiful and also to me talks about a mans struggle of becomeing understood to others
I’m an artist (wank) I saw this this film on mushrooms, and have adored it since, and the soundtrack, and forever more, brilliance!!
One of the most beautiful and profound pieces of music I have ever heard, I would love to hear Fiona Apple sing it.

J'ai vu ce film ado je suis de 70 je suis musicien et maintenant j'y pense et je vais bossé dessus "magnifique" Francois
Merci pour ce moment....
_Finally_ been looking for this song everywhere!
One of my favorite movies and soundtracks
The Phantom's helmet reminds me of Griffith helmet from the manga and anime serie Bersesk.
Clearly Kentaro Miura was inspired in various movies as this or Evil dead in the design of Guts (Ash Williams) , for example.
+André Thouin The villain from Gatchaman and Zechs Marquise from the Gundam franchise as well.
vader was also inspired, notice the box on his chest and the box on winslow's, not to mention winslow's voice afterwards and breathing
I just got done watching the movie for the first time and when I first saw him with the voice-box all I could think of was Griffith merged with Darth Vader lol
Wonderful song.
POSITIVELY FAVORITE
Lo viví en mis 15s
Esta canción es mi tema que recuerdos de los 1973 cuando llego esta película al Salvador una Infancia tormentosa que recuerdos
🖤 dear Winslow. Love this so much.
un brivido che dura da 30 anni, fantastico
This film came out a couple of days after I was born. I come listen to this song when things get shitty.
So haunting. So beautiful.
Paul Williams' best! All the devils that disturbed me and the angels that defeated them somehow, come together in me now.

pass the music on, it's still hot so don't let this legacy die.
This should have won an Oscar for best song 1974.
