As an opening number, this song establishes the theme of the movie very well: that in music, human life is exchangeable for currency.

When I was 11 years old my mom gave me money to go see "The Sting" and instead I went to see this, watched it in awe, and stayed for the second then third showing. The next day I went back and saw it two more times! The next day our teacher asked us to stand up and say what we did on the weekend, I stood up and said :I saw the same film 5 times "PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE!". "Sit down" was all she said.

I'm from Winnipeg, and everyone I know in high school loves this movie cause all our parents loved it. In fact in the 80's my mom used to play the soundtrack to test out the stereos when she worked at radio shack, and everyone would sing along. When she went to Vancouver though and put it on, people would walk out of the store.

My dad was born in El Salvador and I remember seeing him watch this movie in our living room when I was younger. That’s the only reason I know of this. I remember hearing the music and loving it. This film never got the credit it deserved when it came out, mainly because the critics hated it. I think they just didn't get it. The music was cleverly written, though. Good direction. One of my favorite flicks.

More than a few critics at the time liked it. It wasn't a critical darling by any means, but it got good reviews from several high-profile critics. The film didn't get the credit it deserved because it tanked commercially, not because of the critics. Studios generally have no clue how to market horror-comedies and films that straddle multiple genres, and this was no exception.

    We'll remember you forever Eddie
    Thru' the sacrifice you made
We can't believe the price you paid
    For love
Little Eddie Mitty born in Jersey City
Started singin' when he was five
Never knew his father mother didn't bother
To catch his last name fast as he came
    He was off and flying
    Times were really trying
    Eddie and his mother alone
Soon another mister soon a baby sister
Mama kept swingin' and Eddie kept singin'
Ah ya ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya for love for love
    And now the tragic story
    Eddie's sister, Mary Louise
    Needed an operation
To get the money he would have to become
    An overnight sensation
    Eddie believed the American people
    Had wonderful, love giving hearts
    His well-publicized end
    He considered would send
His memorial album to the top of the charts
    ...And it did
Ah ya ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya goodbye goodbye
    When a young singer dies
    To our shock and surprise
In a plane crash or flashy sports car
    He becomes quite well known
    And the kindness he's shown
Has made more than one post mortem star
    Well you did it Eddie
And though it's hard to applaud suicide
You gave all you could give
    So your sister could live
    All America's choked up inside
    We'll remember you forever Eddie
    Thru' the sacrifice you made
We can't believe the price you paid
    For love

This song is such a perfect intro to a great movie about the hollowness and manipulation of show biz. It's catchy, emotional, flashy, and yet entirely artificial. But we don't know that when the film opens, and we are hooked just as Swan meant us to be.

Today is fathers day, and I went out with my dad alone, and that never happens. I met him when I was 9, and since then our relationship has always been formal, we are not close at all. Today my other sisters weren't there to put music and I don't have a phone, so my dad did it and I was surprised when I heard Highway to Hell by ACDC. I have always been a rock fan, and no one else in my family is, neither my friends since I like the actually *old* rock like Elvis Presley, The Police or The clash, so when my dad did that was when I realized- that we are alike more than I can think of. He was also surprised since out of his three daughters, me, the one he didn't raise, the one he doesn't know very well, is the one that he feels more identified with. He showed me this song, and its now one of my favorites forever. Today I grew a bond with my dad that I thought id never had.

It was/is one of the best movies ever made. I love this song Goodbye, Eddie, Goodbye. It's probably the ultimate fusion of the 50's and the 70's. It actually out Doo Woped the '50s. I was 17 1/2 when the film came out in late 1974 and was taken aback by this song, I really was. After that I had a much stronger appreciation of pre-Beatles rock. In addition, the '50s were very popular in the '70s; much more than the '70s were at the time. The '50s and '70s were the decades before and after the tumultuous '60s. The '70s wanted to re-create the more idealized and simpler times of the '50s, and to a big extent, looking back on it now, they succeeded, despite the differences they had with the '50s or '60s in many ways also. .

Between 1974 and 1976, Phantom had two runs in Winnipeg, the initial run of four months, and an additional run of over a year. Why Winnipeg? No one really knows, but to this day, Phantom always does well in the Peg. I can remember seeing the movie, buying the LP and playing it for years, I have the DVD and watch it still.

This type of music wasn't popular when this movie was released. It was just a throwback to older music.

I was 6... It scared the crap out of me. I had nightmares... but I made my parents get me the record, listened obsessively... and I still listen to it. Only seen the flick a few times... but this music is as important to me as Elvis, Beatles, Neil, Hendrix, Nirvana, Pixies...Paul Williams is a great artist.

Phantom of the Paradise has to be Paul Williams'
best work. Phoenix, Jessica Harper, was flawless
    in this.
