Just watched the entire movie for the first time yesterday, and I gotta say, the music in it is one of the best things about it. So happy that Paul Williams is getting more recognition for this thanks to the cult following the film gained over the years.
Congrats to every one of those that have seen this movie. I loved it...I wrote to Paul when I was living in Houston and he sent me a cd signed by him. He is an amazing person...
I saw this movie about 10 times!... The magic of my childhood years...I wrote a message to Jessica Harper and she got back to me, that was really nice of her.
Amazing to me how popular this movie seems to have gotten. I caught it 20 years ago on cable in the middle of the night & taped as much of it as I could, just so I could prove I hadn't hallucinated it. I'd never heard of it, even though I'm a fan of offbeat musicals. For the longest time, no one I talked to had heard of it.
if this movie went to broadway, how could they NOT have a hit? the arrangement on this song is simply brilliant & the entire soundtrack is an amazing piece of work. the movie isn't too bad either ...;)
My dad and I always would always debate on which version of this song was better, personally I found this version better, DAT VOICE. So relax and cool, and that bass. I admire Paul, he's a musical beast.
I was not myself last night couldn't set things right with apologies or flowers Out of place as a cryin' clown who could only frown and the play went on for hours And as I lived my role I swore I'd sell my soul for one love Who would stand by me and give me back the gift of laughter One love who would stand by me and after making love we'd... Dream a bit of style We'd dream a bunch of friends Dream each others smile And dream it never ends I was not myself last night in the morning light I could see the change was showing Like a child who was always poor reaching out for more I could feel the hunger growing And as I lost control I swore I'd sell my soul for one love Who would sing my song and fill this emptiness inside me One love who would sing my song and lay beside me while we'd.... Dream a bit of style We'd dream a bunch of friends Dream each others smile And dream it never ends All my dreams are lost and I can't sleep And sleep alone could ease my mind All my tears have dried and I can't weep Old emotions may they rest in peace and dream, dream a bunch of friends Rest in peace, and dream, dream it never ends
This movie in general is an amazing piece of art that is strangely not well known. The performance, visuals, and music is really one of the coolest and most interesting things ever made in my opinion. I first saw it randomly in the 90s on TV late one night, then became obsessed with it, and turn all friends on to it. All of us were just blown away by how weird, scary, funny, sad, and just bizarre this movie was.
It had been moment back but I have never gotten over it; the story line and the music wonderful unforgivable, be very careful what you want and the price you pay,
Thank you so much for uploading this. This movie is so important to me. Grew up in Winnipeg where it ran every Saturday 3 times. I went for the first Phantom-palooza and met Beef! Thank you!!
This soundtrack should be listed as an addictive substance. I discovered this track last night and try as I might, I've played it every hour. Memorized this whole dang song and the whole day long, I've been underneath its power. I need to see this film!!!
I agree with Trev Mac - absolutely BRILLIANT - so hard to believe it had such little recognition over the years - probably more now than then since it's become a cult classic.
+deborah wood I agree. I only found the movie maybe six years ago and it's now one of my favorite movies (and soundtracks) of all time. I can't see how this wasn't popular when it came out, because it's just fantastic (which is an understatement).
I saw this movie the first time when I was ten, about four months after its initial release. Popularity wasn't the issue. Winslow's disfigurement scene was really intense for that time period. I remember when I saw it the second time. Several of us had seen it at least once and had come back to see it again. But when the disfigurement scene came, about thirty of us went to the lobby to wait for it to end. This probably played a part in what happened next. it became a cult classic that kept playing at midnight for years before it hit cable. I saw the movie at least 100 times before 1980. I still remember the time they showed it on MTV during Halloween '82. I also remember the first time I saw it on public TV in BW. Even then the movie was cool, and the truest film ever made about the Entertainment Industry ever. In the seventies, being a cult movie was the ultimate popularity. And this movie ranks right up there with John Waters and Rocky Horror. now a new generation can discover it here.
He has written tons of songs for many singers including sesame street shows, he's unique, special talent God gave him, I'm his # 1 fan always, he's great💙
I was all about the age of 12 when I first was this awesome movie on cable back in 1978......30 plus years later I am still 'WOWWED" by it...I miss the 70's.
When I saw this I thought that I was the only kid to love this movie, but many fans of this film have adored this as a kid. I love this movie so much, solid 10/10
This movie deserves a remake with the right cast of today, and this generation could enjoy it their way, with familiar cast to them, I am sure it would also bring back interest for the first film and get Paul Williams the recognition he deserves. Spread the idea!!!
This music and the movie inspired me to write a short novel called "The Black Opera", I heard the full album all the time I was written the book. Also, I got a response from his wife, who is a writer as well.
Other movies would have made this version of the song, the supposedly stolen one, a terribly, badly mixed mess to highlight that stealing is bad, but here they gave it straight, and I appreciate that. Sure, this version is more "commercial", but I'd wager it's better than Winslow's version, because want it or not, stolen music isn't synonymous with bad and desperate music.
Reminds me of the fact that Swan was once in a similar situation with Winslow. He too was desperate enough to sell his soul for something he THOUGHT he wanted and got punished for it. Winslow wanted his music to be heard, but only bastardised versions of it got performed. Swan wanted to stay beautiful, but could barely ever show his face in public again.

paul Williams has not received enough credit for this masterpiece of music. i listen to it all the time. Awesome songs
So true
I'll ALWAYS love him. Always...❤
The soundtrack lives in my car. I think I've scared fellow motorists by singing along, windows down, volume cranked.
Absolutely, they are fucking brilliant - Phantom and Bugsy Malone too!
One of the best rock movies ever made! The soundtrack alone is brilliant! Very, very under-rated unfortunately!
Just watched the entire movie for the first time yesterday, and I gotta say, the music in it is one of the best things about it. So happy that Paul Williams is getting more recognition for this thanks to the cult following the film gained over the years.
I just watched it yesterday myself and I concur: this music is _fantastic_

Over shadowed by the horror picture show :):(

So did I
That's exactly how I got my education in older movies. Shame TV has gone the way it has.
I have seen it at midnight showings here in Hollywood.
Very under rated De Palma movie
Happy 40th aniversary to one of the coolest cult classics ever

Totally!!!
Paul Williams is a great songwriter! I love this soundtrack.
I agree with you
Excellent, back to the 70's,saludos desde El Salvador
with this music i remember my oldest sister she use to play it, she went to see the movie. I was about 8 in Santa Ana El Salvador
Santa Ana, El Salvador rocks 4ever with Fantasma en El Paraiso.
Crazy. I watched this movie about 15 years ago and it was because of my dad’s friend. Also from El Salvador Santa Ana haha

I'm from El Salvador too but & I've never seen the movie, love the music, I knw it through my family, I was too little.
Mi mamá es de El Salvador y cuando le ayudamos limpiar la casa, esta canción lo ponía.
Paul Williams = Musical genius
Agreed
More people should say it for sure! Totally agree!!
Paul Williams is a very, very underrated songwriter and entertainer.

A great song. The movie was strange and fun .Saw it as a kid years ago and always liked it.Terific music.
Beef now walks with a cane?! Swan is in his '70s?? The Phantom died? They're always going to be regarded as talented kids and artists to me.
The beauty of image(film) and music is that it is timeless, all it's occupants are young forever.
@@rromero7849 just like Swan
The guys in the Juicy Fruits were amazing vocalists! I never get sick of listening to their numbers!
I'm honestly surprised there was never a stage adaptation for this. It's such a brilliant show.
@@ShadowPoet174 Guillermo del Toro and Paul Williams have been working on a Vegas version, but I haven't heard anything about it for a few years.
This soundtrack has been killing me for decades.
I love this his songs... What a Man ! What a genius indeed :))

Amo esta película y toda su locura. Es una megarepresentante de los 70's. Yo la vi ya en los 90's
Fuera bueno que netflix sacara una serie acerca de esto
This song completely describes my feelings...."one love to lay beside me while we dream."

Good memories of my childhood. I was 8 when it came out.❤

This music and movie reminds me of my childhood. So magical! ❤
I know he owned the 70s as an American songwriter (kind of Elton's doppelganger) but it's this and "Rainbow Connection" that do it for me.
I would like to add ""Out in the Country" (as co-writer) for Three Dog Night, to this list of great songs by Williams.
pure genius
I'm so glad I have this movie in blur ray.. Movie and music from my childhood.

Excellent rien n'a dire !!!!!!!!
Excellent de no jours !!!!!!!°°
J adore écouter encore et encore, du pur bonheur
This music was ahead of it's time....
Thats funny because in the movie Swan had to process the shit out of Winslow's voice. Crazy how that bit of storytelling became so prophetic.
man, it hits!
Si hombe yo las escuchaba por mi papa y mas que nada por la peli el fantasma del paraiso que me impacto en esa epoca por el canal 5 !!!

I want this to be my wedding song when I tie the knot.
Luv luv luv this!
Que puedo decir era un niño cuando vi la película. El drama de la película la injusticia….las canciones. Parece penetraron en mi a mi corta edad..
This is the theme to my life right now.
Personally wish Paul Williams would have written a musical of Faust!
technically he wrote the music for this, so he sorta did?
How funny he sort of did it in a roundabout way..that's cool LOL

It's an amazing song!
I was not myself last night
Couldn't set things right
With apologies or flowers
Out of place as a cryin' clown
Who could only frown
And the play went on for hours
And as I lived my role
I swore I'd sell my soul
For one love who would stand by me
And give me back the gift of laughter
One love who would stand by me
And after making love we'd...
Dream a bit of style
We'd dream a bunch of friends
Dream each others smile
And dream it never ends
I was not myself last night
In the morning light
I could see the change was showing
Like a child who was always poor
Reaching out for more
I could feel the hunger growing
And as I lost control
I swore I'd sell my soul
For one love who would sing my song
And fill this emptiness inside me
One love who would sing my song
And lay beside me while we'd...
Dream a bit of style
We'd dream a bunch of friends
Dream each others smile
And dream it never ends
All my dreams are lost and I can't sleep
And sleep alone could ease my mind
All my tears have dried and I can't weep
Old emotions
May they rest in peace and dream
Dream a bunch of friends - rest in peace
And dream, dream it never ends
