  • As you may know my 1993 Acura Vigor had some pretty bad water leaks into the trunk due to rust issues. To repair them I needed to do a little body work. In this video I show how to do body work using 'hack' methods to get you by. In order to do this 'properly' it would have been best to cut out the old rusted material and weld in new metal. I didn't feel that my $500 Acura Vigor was worth that effort so I did what you see here in this video. As stated this method works very well for floor pans or other areas where you're not necessarily going to see the finished product. Honestly, I don't think things turned out so bad, in fact, I have a new appreciation for the car now that I've done this work, despite the fact that the paint doesn't' match. Perhaps one day I'll go back and finish it properly and respray the entire car. For now, I have other work to do to keep this car in good working order.

    I'm sure you won't but I hope you do, see this. you did nothing or said nothing in this video, that I haven't said or done a hundred times. I am very pleased that it is still being done. the first one I did like this, the car (47 chev) cost $8.00 running and the repairs cost $11.00 (no labour) sold it that weekend for $41.00 and a 27 ford that had a chevy six in it (not yet running). I was 12 and I've never looked back. I'll be 70 tomorrow and I still drive rat rods to this day. Rat Rod = good brakes, good steering and what ever you can afford for the rest of it. Your videos are great and help out a lot of people that are struggling. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks for this video. It's refreshing to learn something new when it comes to repairs that can be completed at home on a budget, rather than stuff that requires money and perfection and might not be practical for your average daily driver vehicle. Keep it up Eric.

      What was that round rubber piece next to the trunk vent that you took out of the rusted metal residue but never cared to put back in, instead you just filled the hole?

      Seegal Galguntijak It was just a plastic plug, probably there for manufacturing. It's removal didn't effect anything as far as I can tell.

    Thanks Eric. Yes, there are so many $500 cars out there that you just can't take the time, money to fix permanently or redo as if it were a more expensive car. So thanks for the "down and dirty" method. Btw, I have used duct tape as a backer for the fiberglas repair once I primed the backing after grinding etc. then removed the tape and coated the back with fiber once I had "made" the front portion of the repair. Plastic putty knives work well for smaller areas, bends, etc. Overall, it worked pretty well for just a few hours work.

    Thanks for the mention! I've had a lot of subs today. It was a quick fix and stopped the water...goal accomplished! I agree, I'd rather look at a mismatch than a rust bubble and keep the stuff in the trunk dry. I'll post this on my site.

    I was bit dubious about this until I saw Eric using rust inhibitor /converter - I had been willing him to do it and like the pro. he is, he did! .
    I have used it often and very successfully. It really does stop rust in its tracks - it works on a very sound chemical principle - and even if you don't paint over it, as happened when I used it when repainting my kids' garden swing and missed a bit with the paint spray can.
    Mind you, I would have cut a carboard template and stuck it behind to hole and applied the filler with a spatula, but I work from home and can make time when I need it.

    if you use wax paper, the filler will not stick to it. it will peel away clean and really smooth, which saves a lot of sanding.

      6 mill clear plastic does the same thing, peels off cleanly and you can see the shape while your forming with your hands.

      Plastic with a roller really gives a smooth surface and you use so much less filler.

    I did some small body repair or my 74 datsun recently. Since I don't have metal bending tools, I welded new plate in as best as I could . And filled the gaps and seams with a metal filler. Expensive stuff, but it really gets as hard as steel. I even tried it experimently on a hole. Filled it up. And after 30 minutes I could retap it. Really nice video Eric for the do it yourself guy at home who does not have expensive body work repair tools lying around!

    Good vid Eric..I liked how you qualified it in the title by saying "the 'hack' way" lol. As someone who has been fairly critical of some of your vids in the past, I don't think even I would call this method a "hack" method. From what I saw it was a pretty cool product and very viable method for a DIY'r to do some simple bodywork to try and solve a problem! In fact, I could have used this vid back when I was in high school and bought a 1988 Honda CRX from a Honda dealership (used of course). After 3 months of driving it, I started getting large bubbles in the paint in almost all the exact same places that your car was rusting! Over the wheels on all 4 corners, gas cap, rear bumper areas, etc.. I remember touching one of the largest paint bubbles lightly and my finger going right through! They had probably just used bondo over the existing rust and did a quick sand job and paint to make a quick sale. Now that is the true "HACK" way of doing it lol. This was a dealership that was supposed to employ professionals…instead they were just sleazy hacks. I knew enough about cars at the time to get a car that was good mechanically, which it was, but didn't know what to look for when it came to body issues. Their shady job probably made things worse in the long run, because within a year all the rust was fully exposed..lol. It was a good life lesson I guess.
    I ended up selling to a guy who was less concerned with cosmetic issues than I was. I sold it on a Wednesday, and two days later the guy parked it a friends cabin in the mountains for a party, and I guess he left it in neutral with no e-brake for whatever reason, and it ended up rolling off the dirt road and down a 500 ft embankment. It had enough momentum near the bottom that when it hit a tree stump it ripped off the rear and most of the front suspension.
    Ohh to be 17 again…..lol

    wish you had done this video about 2 years ago. took my wife's car to a machine shop recommended by a great mechanic. they stated the rust in the pan couldn't be fixed. so I sold the car to a junk yard. great idea and would have definitely gotten the old car passed inspection. thanks for the great idea eric.

    In the old days, before video cameras were cheap. You got a friend to get inside the trunk with a flashlight, then sprayed it with a hose.

    I remember it was a yearly ritual to fix rust on my dad's 84 suburban,mainly the rocker panels and doors. Pop rivets, bondo, drywall screen, fiberglass cloth and resin, VIOLA! Done!! You do what you have to do when pinching pennies!

    For those having trouble finding the tiger hair. Bondo Glass is a good substitute which will be easier to find at like ace/homedepot/walmart type stores.

    Good video Eric. I use the bondo all the time. Its great and I feel a little under rated. Don't worry about the miss match paint. Its better than it was before and really does not look that bad.

    as an apprentice mechanic and apprentice body repair man what you just did is almost exactly what i learnt in my course for body repair except we would also rivit on a small patch piece of metal too

    Body work has always seemed daunting. The welding is easy enough, and a welded skeleton offers better structure. Even the bondo is a learnable skill, though I have found it to be surprisingly humbling. But what holds me back is the paint, which is a subspecialty not easy to reproduce in any backyard garage.

    Function over form I always say. I think this is a fantastic repair! I've had leaks before and I wish I'd known about this. The red paint does look pretty funky, but like you said: $500 car! I love that you're honest about it being a driveway method that will not hold a candle to a professional body shop fix. This isn't THE BEST WAY, but it is getting by, and realistically that's what most people who DIY are looking for.

    As a bodyman I would have put a piece of masking paper/wax paper, on the inside of the trunk, with the coated side facing to the outside of the car. I would have ground the metal a little better, and I would have ground the end of the vent that fits in the rusted out area. Mix up the fiberglass/hardener, put your hand in the trunk against the masking paper and schmuck the filler generously in the area affected. Take the vent and push it into it's opening, and work it into the fiberglass. Once you're happy with the orientation let it harden up. Trim excess filler while its still warm, and brush black gravel guard over it...and voila, the vent helps fill the hole and is stuck in place by the filler, the masking paper on the inside can be peeled off and will be smooth and not sticky. Who is going to take the vent out after anyway! You can use scrap paint to approximate the colour...or brush black gravel guard on the corresponding area on the other side to make it look like it was always there. Eric,I would never use it on a floor pan unless you only have a small hole, because if you drove over something substantial on the road it could come up right through the floor like a hot knife through butter. For the floor use 22 gage sheet metal shaped into a pan,and pop rivet it as a bare minimum. Cheers... from Mark the Canadian bodyman.

    Something that was not mentioned... Eric stabilized the metal and rust prone areas from further rust and rot...
    KUDOS Eric, I would have approached said task, exactly as you did. I like the "paper on paper method".
    I needed the aluminum mesh to add to structure (could have benefit from P-O-P approach)
    It was about function... not about cosmetics... Job well done! Glad that I watched, TY.

    Wire wheels are shit for removing rust, because it will appear as if you removed all the rust, when in fact all you did is polish the thick hard rust which gives it a bare metal "appearance". Even as a temporary fix, he should have used a grinder with a rough sanding disk. EXAMPLE: @ 5:26 some polished rust chips falls off after he hits it with a hammer. Dont use a wire brush.
    That been said, i still love ericthecarguy, and i think he's the best on youtube imo.

      Rust / iron oxide requires oxygen to thrive the main catalyst for the rusting process is water allied ....that warm moist environment in the trunk would have been a great home for same....now that the leak is fixed and the repair has been made it should hold up big time.... a quick brush coat of glass fiber resin after that repair inside the trunk would have been ....just the icing on that cake but that was a serious repair .............great upload..... thanks

    Great video for showing how to fix an old rusty car for a while. I'm doing that right now to a 16 year old Honda Civic I got for a pittance and if it lasts me a year I'll be happy, all I was looking for was to make it clean enough so I wouldn't get stopped by the cops for inspection. Another thing I did on another car years ago and it lasted a long time was to run a cord soaked in black rubberized caulking on the inside of the wheel well where it meets with the quarter panel, gives it tremendous strength and prevents rust from road salt. And when looking for a beater try to get one in a dark tone, it's much easier to paint match, especially non metallic black, whereas light tones are much harder to match, especially red 😉

    For a "hack job," that turned out quite well, in my opinion. Had you gotten paint that perfectly matched the color, I dare say that that repair would've looked *very* good. Not professional-quality, to be sure, but still would've looked very, very good. Would've turned that $500 car into a $2,000 car, easy.

    Hey Eric,
    As a former body man I cringe when people pull out fiberglass with kittyhair or even alumalead as a base then more filler over that. When in all reality as a mechanic you use a airhammer and they make a hammerhead that will shape metal real quickly. With in a few minutes you can form even larger panelsand then if you don't have a welder you could put rivets in the panel or even use panel bonding materal that comes in a two part tube system and the nozzils mix the adhesive. Suprisingly you can bond these panels in quickly and the bond as long as you use a good wire brush and a small grinder called a rolex which fits on your small sidehead angle grinder that you clean off gasket materials.
    You could probably do the entire rear end and trunk floor in an afternoon. My 12 year old son did his first car like that with little help from me and I was impressed. His classmates were impressed as well and a friend asked him to sell him the car so mhe bought an s-10 extended cab that he just had to have so we bought it for 300.00 and with old hoods and deck lids for his metal for his patch panels and it is really coming along ....
    so you can make it with little products and have some thing that makes a descent car

      I have found that patching steel panels with steel is faster and easier than fooling with fiberglass and resin. I like using solder to fill seams. About 20 years ago I had experimented grinding dies to use for forming, and the air hammer technique was one a family friend who used to work with aircraft used. By the way metal working is cheaper than the body filler as you already know.

    Clever application of thinking outside the box. The caveat you gave earlier as to the integrity of this method speaks highly of your ethics. ie there is the Cadilac job or the VW job.       Just because the DIRECTIONS SAY... doesn't mean you have yo follow said directions.
      After all, curing will continue after it's sealed over, the curing will take longer.

    You could have gotten a spray can that would have matched pretty close for 15 dollars or so. On of our local parts stores mixes almost any color and puts it in a spray can.

    Love the fiberglass forming method. Will give it a try next time I need a quick fix that is structural.
    My quick method for rocker panels is to use expanding foam insulation to fill the whole cavity. It will expand thru all the holes. After it sets up, cut off the excess that squirted out and rough sand it to shape. Then use an arylic glazing or bono to topcoat. Sand and then paint with truck bed liner. A quick way to get relatively good looking rocker panels for about $50 and a few hours work that holds up for several Michigan winters..

    For the antenna leak I would just take a funnel and slide it into that space underneath the antenna. Then drill a hole that goes down so water drips below to the ground. The tip of the funnel can go through the hole and The Wider side of the funnel will capture any water that drips down from the antenna. You can even use one of those flexible hose type funnels to reroute the water.

    A decent repair and very appropriate for the value of the car. Just a tip, some auto body supply stores can mix up paint and put it in rattle cans to match your color. Not a big deal in your case as the car could really stand a repaint anyway.

    That's actually the exact right process for a vehicle of that age and value. The proper repair would have cost thousands and that's just silly.Could have matched the color a little better though and the repair would have been amazing.

    Very impressive. A very practical and inexpensive, albeit time consuming repair. Very functional which is what most of us need. I can't imagine how many thousands of dollars it would cost to have an auto body shop do all of those rust repairs. That was a lot of rust! Well done.

    using wax paper instead of the castrol paper floor mat will get you a clean peel every time. so you wont have any paper left on your fiber glass filler.

    When I was in High School, I had a small rust hole in the lower door on my 1993 S-10 Blazer. Being a cash strapped 18 year old at the time, I made a similar repair, except instead of using paper, I actually filled in the hole with thick aluminum foil, and then went over the entire thing with this type of filler. The foil added a nice bit of structure for it to adhere to. A lot of sanding a little bit of paint and I have to say it looked pretty good. Held up well until I sold it a couple years later.

    I don't think the value of the car now is necessarily the determining factor; it's the opportunity costs compared to alternative actions such as; buying a newer or different car, fixing the rust correctly, using filler that might cause problems down the line. I'm often coming across cars that have had filler repairs and it makes a correct repair later a real pain in the neck - some filler is so well disguised under paint, mastic or underseal that you only know about it when it falls out in a heap or catches fire when welding near it. . A well kept old car will reach a bottom value and then start to appreciate in terms of use-value and financial vale as all the problems are fixed and the bad examples are scrapped. Think of all the bodged-up VW beetles and the value of a good one now, or a 1st gen Honda Civic - if you can find one in good condition... Then there's sentimental value of an old car that has become like part of the family. For all those reasons, it's worth making a small repair panel and welding it in. The hack way might be a temporary fix but it's just trouble for the next owner or the last nail in the coffin that need not be.

      It is true the value of a vehicle goes back up as it becomes more rare. My '93 MR-2, which was a very low volume production vehicle to begin with (more Corvettes were built that year), is worth thousands of dollars more now than when I bought it ten years ago.

      Not so James, I've been broke many times due to some serious health problems and have taken the bus and walked when the car has been off the road. But the MOT (UK) is only once a year and welding materials are cheaper than filler. It's true I haven't had a boss who will fire me for missing a day since I was a young man and latterly I've been self employed to avoid those situations. Anyway, scabby bodywork doesn't prevent the car from getting you to work.

    Hi guys! When I did similar body work on my 93 Civic all the part stores said that the car was so old that Dupli-Colour no longer makes the OEM colour. I was thinking what am I going to do now? I took off the gas tank door and I went to Canadian Tire (a car part store), compared it to all the spray cans they had and I found a newer model Ford colour that was just the perfect match. If you guys spend long hours on the body work why not spray the car with the right colour.

    Actually, you should paint the bare metal with rust preventive paint before applying the bondo/fiberglass whatever goop.
    The stuff is pretty bubbly so it absorbs a nice amount of moisture.. Now it's a piece of bondo that traps water between it and the metal so it rots the metal around it.. But a simple squirt of rust preventer on top of that metal and that problem is solved..
    Also do this to the freshly drilled surfaces if you drill holes to metal.. Not a single piece of metal should not be left bare.

      Didn't realise he used a clearcoat.. All i saw was bare metal and bondo added but after rewatching and skipping to the point before the apply of bondo i saw him use clear coat.. Man i'd use a old paint brush and brush on some rust prevention paint that contains lead in it..

      V4 Garage That's not actually clearcoat. That is the stuff that chemically reacts with the rust and changes its composition so it is rock hard and wont rust any further, also doubles as a primer coat.

      Is the rock hard substance weldable? Is it durable enough so it won't crack and crumble away? How does this chemical work exactly?

      good rust converter has tannic acid in it, which reacts with the iron oxide (rust) and turns it into iron tannate, and also contains a polymer that acts as a primer and turns the area into something you can paint again

      gatewaysolo104 You can buy a good quality paint online. There's an store here I have them make my paint in a rattle can for 16 bucks. A good brand too. Online around 19 to 25 dollars. Clear around the same. I use a clearcoat blender to blend into the surrounding clear. Yes bodywork can be tricky, But it doesn't have to expensive.

    Here's an alt I thought of. Duct tape from the inside to create a more uniform plate, mud from the outside. The tape releases easily and then seal the deal on the second pass. Less finishing pain. Genius!

    Good job Eric. Well done. I have a 2006 Avalanche and the rocker arms on both sides are starting to blister a little bit. I think your technique will give me another 2 or 3 years before I will need to completely replace the rocker arms. Thanks again brother.

    Nice repair job, Eric. I had a Mazda that had rust 'eat' up the rear wheelwell corners of the quarter and also right about in the same places. I always wondered why the trunk was damp or wet after snowmelt or thunderstorms. The bumper cover was popping off where it was supposed to attach very much like the Vigor, and upon pulling it back, a few rustholes. Even though I linked to this thru your Dec 2017 video, it was great seeing it done. I happen to enjoy bodywork as well as repairs, but no longer have a garage, so I performed the necessary-only type job like you did. Very useful info. Unfortunately, I used Bondo and it works well on panels, just not as well on edges(like the wheelwell corner repair) and some chipped away.
    Doesn't really matter now, I did this repair in spring 2015 and the car bit the dust in summer 2015, so its gone, replaced by a much newer car that I am trying to keep rust-free long as I can, altho it is Michigan and this winter has been brutal so far.

    I dont agree to a job like this at all!! Welding and replacing the metal yes. Shaping the metal and incert it! Please people dont plaster a car with puddy. Never mix puddy on cardboard. Watch Auto body vids and see the differance!! The quarter panel can be painted. A painter would know how. The entire car dosent need to be painted in this case!!

      If you have a vehicle that you need to get through just one more state inspection or carry you until you get your tax refund...it makes sense to go as cheaply and minimal as you possibly can. Then take that money and labor and put it into your replacement vehicle. If your replacement is bought for less than five grand, it will in all likelihood need work!

      20rich02 "Proper" procedure is completely dependent on whether your budget will allow for it. If you have a friend or relative who can help you do the work the "right" way, or do it for you at little cost, then go for it. Otherwise you'll have to do the best you can with what you can afford and to the best of your ability, even if the outcome is less than perfect but good enough see you through.

      I never saw the can when I bought it. My parts guy sent it to me. I just asked for 'dark red', this is what I got. I'm not worried, the entire car needs paint. I don't think it looks any worse than the pealing clear coat.

      As my 95 Civic is developing typical hondacancer in the rear quarters,this is the type pf repair I do,as rust appears. For color match, i use the "pens" of the correct color available at parts stores.I have a small modelling airbrush,and pour the paint into the color cup.It may take a small while on a small area to spray,but the color match is better.

      mutznutzgamer Even if you do use the original colour code from the factory, you have to allow for oxidation and all round paint degradation over time. Red pigments are notoriously affected by ultra-violet light from the sun, we've all seen it on older cars. It looked as though Eric used a solid red and the car is more a metallic cranberry.
      Anyway, it's his junker to do with as he pleases, so if Eric's happy, then cool.
      Personally, I would have been more meticulous with the colour. The car is in bad enough shape to chip a bit of paint off and take it to a paint supplier for matching. :-)

    I've always been told that there is another difference between the 2 different fillers(regular filler vs fiberglass filler) besides just strength. Regular filler is porous, whereas it will soak up water. I'm told the fiberglass filler is not. It's kind of like the difference between primer and paint. People will cover their work with primer, thing that it has sealed their work, just to find rust showing a short time later. Paint is actually what will seal it from water.

    Not a bad hack and pack. Good enough for a daily beater. I've made similar repairs with glass bondo. They lasted me several years. I've also used Gorilla Tape to repair a inner fender well to repair the cracked plastic and covered it under coating. Still going strong for 3 years.
