I want to pay a tribute to SB73. He puts thought and a lot of effort into producing these videos for our enjoyment. I was delighted to meet him and spend time riding over Dartmoor. Good weather - good company and a brand new Royal Enfield! My thanks for all your comments - and I’m pleased to still be in the brotherhood of bikers. I hope to meet some of you at SB’s ride this weekend. He’s given permission for me to adopt the honourary title of ‘Saddlebags37’
I really enjoyed listening to you talk about your experience and advice, especially about advanced riding. Do you have any advice for a 64 year old who is seriously considering taking his test and buying his second bike. I had a little 175cc CZ trail bike when I was 18/19 and that is it. One of my only regrets is not buying the 250cc Matchless offered by a friend. Had I bought that, I'd have done my test when it was easy.
@@Saddlebags73 I found an old favorite photo of my dad on what May have been his first bike . I’d love to share it with you. Are you on instant messenger ? Or do you have an e mail ?
At 69 I'm a youngster on my 500 classic, I quite fancy a Meteor, but I still like a bit of a burn up, now and then . So I think 350 won't be big enough and the 650 is more than I want to spend, shame they don't have a 500 Meteor, oh and love the moor as well , living not far from Widecombe.
Hi Dozerblade. I have just returned from a group ride to Snowdonia. 6 out of 7 of us on Royal Endields, and ages ranging from 50 to 73. The 350 Hunter kept up perfectly. Sadly we won’t see any more 500’s as they ceased production. What a lovely part of the world you live in. Perhaps our paths will cross at some point 🙂
Hi Mate, We might have already crossed paths as I Lived in Cornwall for 14 years from 2007 - 2021 at a little place called Canworthy Water, and my local dealer was North Cornwall Motorcycles and Ace Bikes.@@Saddlebags73
I have several old geezers I look up to , many of them are in their late 70's , and early 80s , they inspired me , and put up with me through out my early years of becoming a biker , I would not change it . Life is so special , and the many years on two wheels are awesome , but never enough , I love motorcycles like nothing else .Take it all in , love it while you can , and share , share , share . Cheers .
That’s brilliant sluf. I love listening to the older generations. We can learn so much from their knowledge and experience. “Life is special” 👌🏼 yes indeed. It’s too easy to forget that at times, but I’m often reminded whilst out on a motorcycle. Many thanks my friend. Ride safe 👍🏼
He gives us all something to strive for doesn’t he. This was a couple of years ago now. He has sold the Classic but is still out there enjoying himself on two wheels in the form of a Honda CT125. Many thanks 🫡
I'm not sure anyone will top this review and interview. How often can you come across someone with his experience, riding ability and clarity of thought at 85 years old.

Just going to bed. You've got to stop keeping up late. I was going to watch it when I get up but then saw my buddy ER is in the video, so here I am yawning. NOT because I'm bored.
Oh I am sorry 🤣 I hope you weren’t too disappointed to discover ER isn’t actually in the video. Just a matching bike. Hope you slept well my friend, and thanks for staying up late in order to watch 👍🏼
What a great meeting! Congratulations to John, I hope I can still ride a bike like him at his age! Another great video for those who want to take the time to live instead of rushing to a fatal fate !!! thank you very much Saddlebag 73. Take care ...
This was thoroughly enjoyable! Beautiful scenery, beautiful bikes, and a lovely conversation with an inspiring gent. What an absolute pleasure that would have been to spend that amount of time chatting with someone with a lifetime of experiences. Great video!! ✌️
Jeff I've been popping into the back catalogue of Saddlebags 73 and just found this absolutely amazing one. Now I know who Saddlebags 37 is. A delight to meet such an interesting chap. Those Dartmoor lanes and views are,, as you say, beautiful. My wife and I did a fair bit of walking and cycling around there quite some years ago now so this was a real Christmas 2023 treat for me. Thank you both.
Don’t go back too far Peter, it gets really embarrassing 🫣 That was a memorable day in a beautiful part of the world, with a characterful fellow Enfield owner. Most enjoyable. I wonder if our cycling tracks have crossed 🤔 Glad you enjoyed. Thanks LE. Jeff
Nice vid mate, thanks. I've been watching a lot of R.E 500 stuff lately cos I'm seriously considering downsizing from my GS650 twin and getting a used Bullet. The thing is, I'm only 71 years old and maybe I should wait another decade or so!
Brilliant episode my friend. And John is a great chap. I wish I will be able to ride my Enfield at his age. And it looks like he will have many more years of riding to come. Awesome
Many thanks Uncle, I appreciate that. It was a pleasure and privilege to meet, ride and chat with John. He’s a sprightly chap full of enthusiasm. My new hero. I want to be like him when I grow up 🙂👍🏼
Nice to see you getting your top up dose of Devon, SB. John's points on safely riding motorcycles are very relevant. I would like to add that older riders do tend to be constantly cautious because experience beats all when riding a motorcycle. Another great vid.
i'm amazed and chortled that the young 80 yo gentleman got his info from youtube reviews :) Well done and keep riding... I have the RE 411 scram.. but i adore the look and sound of the 350. Muz from Oz
He’s a star isn’t he :) Very in touch with the modern world. He’s actually changed this one for the bronze version. He’s very happy with it. Many thanks Muz. All the best from the UK. Jeff aka SB73 👍🏼
37 years ago I sold my last bike. In May of this year at age 74.5 re took my motorcycle course and have been riding my own bike since June 2024. Put 8000k on it and 15 days ago got a beautiful RE Bullet 350. It's name is Magic because I was riding it and kept repeating in my head ,this is magic, this is magic, and so the Magic Bullet was born.😊
I love this, thank you. I don’t know what Royal Enfield sprinkle on their motorcycles, but yes they are magical. Thanks again, lovely to hear your experience 🙂👍🏼
I've not seen your channel before but I really enjoyed this video. I'm about to get a Classic 350 so it was nice to hear such an experienced riders view on it. Like you, if I'm anywhere near as good as John at 85 I'll be well happy! Beautiful roads, nice conversation and very well filmed. Thanks..I'm subscribed:)
Thank you so much. I appreciate you watching and I’m grateful for every new subscriber. My channel can be quite random so please don’t be put off by any silly vids (2 or 3 lined up 🤦🏻♂️), I’m sure if you stick around there will be more that you’ll enjoy. The 350 is a beautiful bike. If I didn’t already have the 500 it would very likely be on my shopping list. I wish you many safe and happy miles on your new motorcycle 👍🏼
14:46 I remember Cornwall and Devon from caravan camping in the 60:s as the sunny part of England. And cattle grids everywhere, just like in the video. Lovely!
Great video mate, the Royal Enfield Classic and the English Countryside is an unbeatable combination. My word the old fellow's doing well, fantastic chap. Take care and ride safe.
Such lovely English countryside and those narrow lanes! Oh if only I could tuck Oddball into my carry on bag and zip over the pond for a scenic bimble!
I,m approaching ...as I am 70. But I'm not intending to swap my Classic 500 for the moment. Very nice routes, exactely those I like riding getting " lost" in Portugal.
It’s fantastic to hear from people with some years behind them, still enjoying their motorcycles. Very inspirational. Yes I would keep the 500 as long as possible. The 350 is a nice alternative though. Many thanks my friend, nice to hear from you 👍🏼
Oh it’s brilliant to hear from you. Of course you already know, but I think your dad is an incredible character. I can genuinely say it was a pleasure and a privilege to chat, ride and generally spend time with him. Thank you for watching. Take care over there 🙂
That’s great . My first ride was as a six year old in 1964 . “ hang on tight!” He said . I think he went very slow that day . I remember him being in awe of Steve McQueen when his stunt men refused to jump the fence in “ The Great Escape “ but Steve did it saying it was just a trick ! Time goes by so quickly so it’s lovely to see him having fun . Thank you again !
What a lovely memory that is. I’m sure he was extra careful. Steve McQueen? We have a different hero today. One named John. I’m so pleased you have been able to see this 🙂 All the best!
Wow, what a glorious day ye had with the perfect Royal Enfield weather 😁 This was a very entertaining video, think you'd do well as an interviewer, maybe another series you could do?? 🤔 The combination of the ride with the voice-over from the interview was great. And thanks to John for sharing his story too!
Yes we got very lucky with the weather. It was a fantastic day all round. It was a pleasure to meet, ride and chat with John. He’s quite a character. I wasn’t sure about the interview/chat voice-over, so thanks for the reassurance. Although it isn’t really my scene, I wouldn’t mind doing more interviews if and when the opportunity presents itself. Thanks Bullet, I’m pleased you enjoyed it 🙂👍🏼
Hi, nice one, a day out in the sun , with a gent named John . What a remarkable man and still enjoys riding his Enfield . Avery interesting chat . Hats of to John . Thanks my friend and ride safe, listen to John .😃
Great video. I like how you have shared the conversation with John whilst showing the ride. I have ordered my classic 350 red and chrome but have a wait of at least a couple of months over here in Perth Western Australia
Thank you very much PPP! Ah you shouldn’t torture yourself with videos like this 🤣 I hope you’re happy with it when it arrives.m, and that you enjoy many safe, happy miles on it 👍🏼
What a glorious conversation about bikes. This fella should have his own bike show….kind of like back in the old tv days….”A Round With Aliss” that wonderful golf program.
Yes, it was very interesting meeting and chatting with John. He speaks very eloquently and makes it easy listening. I don’t know of the tv show, but I agree, he wouldn’t be out of place in something like that. Many thanks FC 👍🏼
That's a great vlog showing fantastic scenery and a very interesting interview with John. I've recently met some great people when I've been out and about on my Himalayan. I was stopped have a break in the Goyt valley on Friday miles from anyone and this guy(Paul) appears from nowhere. He saw my Himalayan and came over for a chat, we chatted for over an hour about bikes we'd owned and Royal Enfields. He had come up to Derbyshire on his Meteor 350 all the way from Suffolk just to ride the lanes. So it seems Royal Enfield owners are some of the most friendly and interesting people.
Isn’t it brilliant how a certain bike can spark conversation. It happens all the time when I’m out on the Royal Enfield’s, and to some extent on the Z900rs. A chap spent 20 minutes telling me about his original Z1, while I scoffed a pasty in a car park recently. Many thanks, that was nice to hear 🙂👍🏼
Another enjoyable video thank you. Love my 500 but if I didn't have one I'd get a red and chrome 350 for sure. Test rode one for 2 hours and loved everything about it. Enjoyed the interview too. Thanks again. Peter
Thank you very much 🙏🏼 I’m the same. I love the 500 but if I didn’t have one, the 350 would be at the top of my list. Had a great day with John, and I’m glad you enjoyed it. All the best 👍🏼
Yes, you are right. And an absolutely convincing one which supports my personal decision in terms of buying the Royal Enfield Classic 350. 😉 I hope you will have many fantastic rides in future. All the best from Germany!
Fantastic glad I found your video...Great video too....Used to go to Devon as a kid with Grand parents..loved it..We used to stay at Hartford Bridge Holiday Park near Peter Tavy... Wonderful area.. I've always wanted to go back.. I'm a new biker got my 125 might be worth a long ride from Cambridgeshire.. 🤔😉😎
Thank you very much! Glad to bring back some nice memories. Yes, a long way in a 125 but still doable. Don’t let the engine size hold you back. Choose a suitable route and take your time 👍🏼 Thanks again and all the best 🙂
I really it must get on a 350 classic soon! If it's gives me what the 500 did (they don't come with kick start so I can't go wrong) then it's going to be a fun review. Lovely to hear Johns convo, and he sounds very passionate about safe riding. And most importantly 2 stunning bikes across Dartmoor. Cracking👍🍻🍻
I’m interested to hear your opinion of the 350. The lack of a kick start will certainly reduce comedy value. Yes it was very interesting listening to John’s stories through the day, and a lovely ride over the moor. Thanks ER 🍻👍🏼
@@Ainsworth-Rider Yes it's very tempting, but I have a press bike at the moment which I'm equally tempted by. But also there's a couple of other reasons I'm trying not to get a 3rd bike even though I want one..... Video coming up (if I ever get time to make it!)
Just found and subscribed to your channel really enjoyed the video and looking forward to getting my Classic 350 in a week which will be my first NEW motorcycle after 52 years of riding. Cheers
A really entertaining and relaxing Sunday watch after all the superbike racing this weekend. Great guest rider; perfect bikes and pace for those roads and a tempting taster for next week's social ride. I'm hoping to be able to make it this year and keeping fingers crossed for similar weather.
Thanks JRM, I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was a real pleasure chatting and riding with John. Yes, we’ll cover most of the roads here on the ride out. It’ll be good to meet you if you can make it. 🤞🏼for the weather 👍🏼
I like this one a lot. :) Very nice conversation and I see some similarities with my friend Franc Pušnik. Admiring him riding at 85. Just great. I also like the idea that you picked the "storm location". This area has something very mystical, I think. Keep up bro.
Such a beautiful and pleasant video! Probably the most enjoyable I have watched so far, and I have watched a few.. These outstanding landscapes, these small roads and charming villages, the good balance between pure riding, interesting and wise comments, and breaks. I just loved it. I am currently finishing to pass my motorbike licence, still hesitating between this 350 classic and the Interceptor. Since I live in front of Devon, but on the other side of the Channel, I am looking forward to riding in this place very soon I hope.
That’s very kind of you, thank you very much. Yes Dartmoor is beautiful, and perfect for a gentle ride given nice weather. I couldn’t advise you which bike to choose. It is best to test ride both of you can. Good luck with your license. Perhaps we will see you here in the future 🙂 All the best 👍🏼
I have a Harley 1200 nightster and should be happy, but my son is bringing me an 06' Bullet 500 in two weeks and I'm like a kid before Chrismas! 😆 beautiful ride Gents!
Thank you for another great vidio and introducing us to John and his new bike. John and my uncle who introduced me to motorcycles have a lot in common as he is still riding at the same age.
This video just popped into my suggestion list and I am so glad I watched it (the first one of yours I have watched). Just subscribed. I watch all of Economical Rides videos and we have become virtual friends, through his channel and our love of our dogs and Classic 350s. I have the same colour as his and John B`s. I think I may have seen you on a live chat with Garry but not sure. Anyway, a very enjoyable video and I shall look up some more of yours. Many thanks Dave
Hi Dave, many thanks indeed. I’ve been following Garry at Economical Rides since he started his channel and I’m a big fan of Ruby 🙂 Garry and I were both on one of Exeter Rider’s live shows together. Thanks again, all the best, Jeff
@@Saddlebags73 Hi Jeff. Who`s NOT a fan of Ruby? 🐶. Garry did one of his `Other Bod`s Dogs` on my little Willow, a while back and it was lovely. Yes, that`s where I saw you. Will follow you with interest. All the best Dave
I think I’ve seen every one of Garry’s vids so I would have seen Willow 🙂 It’s a pleasure to have you along. My channel is quite varied so it won’t all appeal to you. But hopefully you’ll see one that you enjoy now and then 👍🏼
Gateway overload 😀Great video Saddlebags. John's advice is spot on, especially the "don't be in a hurry", not just because of safety, but you miss out on all the views and interesting things along the way . You can tell he's done IAM with the fluid way he rides. And that 350 is stunning in those colours.
Haha I had to find a special gateway to earn my ‘wonderful barn’ 🙂 To still be riding at 85, he has obviously been doing something right. It really was a privilege to chat and ride with him, as well as to ogle at his bike 😊 Thanks EMA 👍🏼
Loved this video( haven't seen your channel before) Beautiful bikes& scenery & wisdom, I have subscribed and look forward to watching all your videos .Many thanks from OZ( Englishman overseas)
Bloody fantastic SB kudos to John I hope I'm still riding if I get to that age brought back some memories seeing the moors and Widdicombe . I remember the old 50.s style bus that use to bring the other kids to school from there always thought it looked so old fashion back then . : D .It's funny how seeing these things brings all sorts back into yer mind . cheers mate good one : )
Thank you Crumblymal. John is an inspiration isn’t he. Widecombe is gorgeous and I suspect it has changed very little over the years. I’m glad I stirred up some memories 🙂 Thanks again my friend 👍🏼
They certainly don't make them like they used to mate, meaning people as a whole! 😉👍 This is something that's really appealing to me, the fact that these look like proper vintage machines, but with modern tech & more, importantly... Modern brakes!!! 👍♥️😎
So true! He’s an amazing gentleman. My new hero. Lovely character to these bikes. You won’t get anywhere fast, but you’ll get there smiling. And yes modern brakes are a plus. Many thanks for watching 👍🏼
How wonderful is this! The 350 seems super popular. Sadly I do too many motorway miles. Great video. John is a wonderful character. I'm due to do the riding element of 'dragon rider cymru' an enhanced free ride instruction. I expect it to be helpful. I find myself eyeing up gateways. 🤣 Ride safe both. Lady J Rider
Aye, I know a few people with 350’s now, and they’re all happy with them. Yes John is brilliant. It was a privilege to spend the day with him, and we have met several times since. Enjoy the course, I hope you get something out of it. I have never taken any advanced/further training, but it can only be a good thing. Hahaa can’t beat a good gateway view 🤪 Many thanks Lady J, take care out there 👋🏼
I own the meteor 350 and I love it !!!meteor is a more laid back modern take on a classic. I just sat on the classic 350 super comfortable upright position you’re definitely sitting on top of the bike compared to the meteor. Both bikes are dripping with personality, super smooth and comfy along with very predictable power band. I don’t know if it’s my imagination but these bikes feel like they have alot more power than they should -good gearing! Cheers mate Allan USA
Hi Allan, firstly thank you for watching. I haven’t tried a meteor, but I know it shares the same engine as the Classic 350. I haven’t ridden a 350 either, but the power delivery of the 500 is very enjoyable. I think Royal Enfield work their magic with the torque, and as you say, the gearing. Wonderfully charismatic bikes that always raise a smile 😊 All the best Jeff
John 85yrs old & riding what a legend.I saw a 80yr old joker at gas station on a trike & talked to HIM. HE said he had a Harley Davidson but he had a bad leg & the weight of the bike was to much so got a trike Harley Davidson. That way he keep riding & not worry about dropping the bike cause of bad leg & he was no slouch either & gave it a bit of herb.
Really enjoyed this SB, so nice listening to you both chat as you pootle through the ways on those gorgeous bikes, makes me want a RE more than ever. Really nicely put together video too, a lot went into this & it shows. Quality. Apologies for the no show on Sunday mate, wasn't the rain (riding in Cornwall for umpteen years has given me gils) but I came back from me hols with more than good memories, I'm now full on black lung lurgied up....& this video being set in Devon didn't help! 🤨😁 Catch you dreckly mate 👊
That’s very nice of you Bimble, thank you mate. No need to apologise. The weather brought numbers down but I think everyone enjoyed it. Shame you couldn’t make it. Hope you get fixed up soon. Black lung lurgy sounds savage 🥴 Yes sorry about the location. John’s single downfall is where he resides. Thanks again mate. Will catch you another time 👍🏼
What a beautiful video ! Goodness me. Broadcast quality interview too. I am in awe of this one, how the heck did you manage to do that Jeff ? You both got lucky with the weather there, what a gorgeous day ! It looks as though you have a new riding buddy for when you are out exploring on Ernie now 👍🏻 It was a pleasure to finally meet John, even if there was a computer screen in the way, and I will send him an email saying so later on. Thanks for the mentions and the wave from the pair of you, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside over here in not so sunny Spain ❤️ Also, it was Incredibly diplomatic of you to avoid the cream tea conflict there Jeff, toasted teacakes, the diplomat's choice 😛 Ruby also noticed you having a sneaky stroke of that black doggo when you were parked up and is now feeling slightly jealous ! 😂 I suspect I will have to give her a sausage to help her get over the emotional trauma of it all ☹️ A lovely video. Two lovely bikes, two lovely blokes and beautiful villages and countryside. Fantastic. Well done Jeff and I hope this was the first of many rides for the pair of you. I think you make a great team ! Cheers Jeff & John,, ER.
Thanks ER! It was a fantastic day all round. The weather was perfect and it was a pleasure to meet, chat and ride with John. I wasn’t going let any petty cream tea disputes spoil things. The interview (which I prefer to think of as a natter) was very easy on my part. I simply asked a few questions. It was John’s eloquence and enthusiasm that brought it to life. It was John that stroked the dog. Not guilty my lord (on this occasion) 🤣 Many thanks for your kind words. I’m really pleased you enjoyed it. Much love to you and Ruby 👋🏼🙂🍻
@@Saddlebags73 Oh really, we'll have to watch it again, Ruby could have sworn it was you ! Not that it matters now. She got her sausage out of it anyway 🤣 What set up were you using to record the interview with John ? The audio was really great, like you were both miced up to the same device or something. Asking for a friend, just in case he ever meets one of his viewers for a chat 😉. You are right, John was very eloquent and enthusiastic in his answers, which made your job a bit easier. Still a top quality interview though and it does take two to interview as they say ( does anybody actually say that ? Probably not ! ). Awesome job and I have already thanked John via email for the wave 👍🏻 Cheers SB, El Otro.
I’m sure she deserved a sausage anyway 🙂 Trusty Tascam with a dead cat for the interview. Came out surprisingly well considering we were beside a river and a road 🤦🏻♂️ (noted for next time) Well, if nobody says that, they should 🤣 Thanks El Otro 👍🏼
Great video. Very interesting chap. Great riding up over Dartmoor. Have you ever thought of doing a run with some followers that are local? I haven’t bumped into you yet at Kit hill.
Thank you! Yes very interesting and an inspiration. I have arranged a couple of group rides (one this Sunday just gone, in persistent rain). Some locals and some from far away. Are you referring to the classic bike meets? That is the only ones I’ve heard of, and wasn’t sure if the bike would be frowned upon, seeing as it isn’t a genuine classic. I’d certainly be up for it though.
Thank you SB & John for the relaxing meander across the moor. I haven't been there since I did a five-day RAF exercise across it in 1962. Must say that riding across it would be a whole lot easier than marching 18 miles in 4 hrs 5 mins, complete with pack! Anyway, I'm envious of the nice bikes and the almost empty roads. Here in Philippines the roads are crowded, with little regard to rules, so my Skygo 150 Classic is quite sufficient.
Thank you Chris! Having done quite a bit of walking over Dartmoor I know how demanding it can be. That sounds like a proper beasting. John was telling me he ran a Dartmoor marathon some time ago. Lunacy 🤣 It’s good to hear you are still enjoying life on two wheels, albeit in quite different surroundings to ours. Nice to hear from you so thanks again. John and I plan on meeting again so there could be more videos from Saddlebags 37 (Johns new title) and myself 🙂
@@Saddlebags73 You're right; Dartmoor can be very tough going. We were told that a mile there equalled about five on the road. We were in teams, dropped at different points and given a target map reference. On the third day the Chief Tech in charge of our team challenged us to be first in; we were. I was bitten by the motorcycle bug back in 1958. There's no cure. Ride safe.
As a himalayan owner ive recently purchased a classic 350...im very impressed ....my observation is how simular (yes i know that was the plan ) with the 350... but today i noticed the slight whine engine or gearbox...just like your 500...atb 👍👍
Hi Geoff/Jeff, I came to your channel through, John, when, recently, I bought his Honda Super Cub from him. As you said, a very nice chap, who looked much younger than his 85 years. I met him in Bristol, which was halfway between our houses to collect the bike. John, if your reading this, I am taking good care of the Cub, as you requested. I'm enjoying the relaxed style your channel gives, Geoff/Jeff. And, have subscribed. I, Also, watch Exeter Rider. Started watching him as he has an NC750X, which I have. BTW, I see you have a Himalayan, which I, also, have. So, will be keeping a look out for your videos on that. I'll have to watch some of your backlist. I'm another Geoff ( hope you spell it the correct way, as well )
Hi Geoff. Thanks for watching. John told me about his final ride in the cub. I think it was a reluctant parting. I’ll pass in your message in case he doesn’t see the comments. He’s a lovely chap and it really was a pleasure to spend the day with him. It’s nice to have you along. My channel is quite random, just thought I’d warn you. But hopefully you’ll find some of it interesting. Thanks again and all the best Jeff 👈🏼👌🏼🤣
@@Saddlebags73 Thanks, Jeff. ( now I know which spelling you use ) Will keep watching. I've watched a few of your 'rides through time' videos and enjoyed them. Keep it up.
Hi Geoff, I’m pleased that you like the Honda Cub. It’s just another dimension to riding to be enjoyed within it’s performance span. You will discover that when riding the Cub, you won’t see the wave or nod of acknowledgment from other bikers that you normally get. They have their reasons 😮 !
@@johnb7855 I have had a few nods in reply to nods from me. Not sure if I'd get one if I didn't nod first. The Cub's going well. I've had 184mpg so far, but now switched to E5 petrol ( blow the expense, ha ha ) so might improve on that from what I've read ) Love the look of your Classic. They are absolutely, beautiful. Keep on riding. There's a lot of us that would be very pleased to be riding into our 80's.
Hi Jane. I found them on eBay. Try the link below. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bar-end-mirror-LS3-Royal-Enfield-Classic-500-Interceptor-650-chrome-/401606431655?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 Hope that helps. All the best, Jeff.
Wasson Sbagsy boy, fair play to the Old Boy! Makes me feel quite sprightly, and gives me hope that I might follow in his wheel tracks ! See you next week if we're spared ! Geddon Pard and DFD!
Great video, Saddlebags. That bike sure looks sweet. But you must correct John on one important point: it's not the speed that kills, it's the sudden stopping. I wonder if he's coming to the social ride. I'm really looking forward to that.
Love the way Ernie looks and although the classic 350 is gorgeous. Could you comment on build quality Ernie verses Classic 350 please and your preference. I'm leaning toward Ernie, and both are still available in OZ. Many thanks for your channel and opinion.
Hi 👋🏼 Build quality is very much the same for both bikes. I haven’t ridden a 350, so I can’t make a real comparison. But the 350 is a newer, more refined engine than the 500. It will be less ‘vibey’, but will also be slightly down on power. The low down torque on the 500 is one of its finest qualities in my opinion. The power delivery is most enjoyable. I wouldn’t consider changing my 500 for a 350, but if I didn’t have the 500, the 350 would be a serious contender. The 500’s were discontinued in 2020’ and I don’t think we would find any new ones left in the UK. I would urge you to try both of you can. Don’t be put off by the vibrations of a new 500, as they dissipate as the mileage increases. All the best 👍🏼
Thanks! I found the mirrors on eBay, listed as LS3 bar end mirrors. Posted from Germany. Edit* I’ve just had a look and can’t see them listed anymore. I got them a few years ago now.
Ordered a bronze Classic last weekend on the strength of the reviews online and also because for me the 350 Classic is the best styled Enfield ever (IMO). It's all to do with the shape of the fuel tank.
I saw the bronze version for the first time a couple of weeks ago. They look lovely. I wouldn’t change my 500 for one but, if I didn’t have that I’d be seriously considering the 350. I would be torn between bronze and red/chrome though. I’d probably have to flip a coin. Enjoy your new bike 🙂👍🏼
@@Saddlebags73 Thanks, yeah I was tempted by the red for the same reason as mentioned in your vid, memories of the old BSA colours, but maybe it's a bit too pillar box red, the bronze looks pretty classy. Just hope the dealer sticks to their 2 week delivery estimate.
I wonder if anyone can tell me what was the name of the club that he was involved in forming for training new riders, and are there any similar groups nationwide?
Hi. I know of IAM roadsmart, and ROSPA motorcycle training. The police also do a ‘bike safe’ course. I’ll ask John to drop a comment when convenient. He may well know of more 👍🏼
As I said in the interview, after the Police Training weekend, I joined the local branch of a National organisation - the institute of advanced motorists IAM. They had a sub group for motorcyclists. I believe that if you contacted the IAM, they could advise you of the nearest motorcycle group local to you. Check also with your local Police force. They might offer training. RoSPA also offer training. Whichever you choose, you will benefit. I hope this is of help to you.
A wise old friend of mine once told me "Bikes keep your turnip up together". He reckoned they kept his mind fit and I've since read there are scientific studies that agree with him. Apparently, riding exercises the part of the brain that deals with movement, balance and spacial awareness and staves-off mental deterioration. I'm going to ride until I'm immortal! See you next week to ride my Classic 350 around there.
Just wanted to ask what’s that handlebar, I’m not sure if it’s stock because I live in india and our stock handlebars for classic aren’t the same pls reply thanks
Hi. It’s the stock handlebar here in the UK. I’ve been asked that a few times. Until then I didn’t realise there was a difference. Probably not much help, sorry.
@@Saddlebags73 One more quick question, did you find adding the booster plug in conjunction with the custom exhaust made much difference to the feel of the ride ? cheers
I fitted the exhaust at 300 miles. I was still running it in, so I couldn’t make a comparison I’m afraid. The booster plug however, was money very well spent. It increased power slightly from low to mid range, but more importantly smoothed everything out and eliminated surging at low speeds. Hope that helps 👍🏼
Thank you so much Saddlebags37 😁
Look forward to seeing you at the weekend all being well.
All the best, my friend 👍🏼
Thanks John, great Video and excellent choice in a bike. 500 is cracking and the 350 Classic seems to be a sweet spot.
@@eddiehawkins7049 Do it, be confident and enjoy. It opens so many doors, on a personal and a social level. All the best!

Lovely ride, beautiful scenery. Thanks for taking us along, that's what it's all about isn't it?
Thank you kindly! Yes, that’s exactly what it’s about 🙂
That's awesome, kudos to John at 85. I hope I do that well myself. That is also why I bought a Classic. Great ride, great roads!
He gives us all something to strive for doesn’t he. This was a couple of years ago now. He has sold the Classic but is still out there enjoying himself on two wheels in the form of a Honda CT125.

Yeah, this is how it starts when you are in love with the ER. :) Joke.
Thank you Loïc. He’s an incredibly interesting chap and a pleasure to spend time with.

Thank you very much. It was a real pleasure spending the day with John.
Don’t go back too far Peter, it gets really embarrassing 🫣
That was a memorable day in a beautiful part of the world, with a characterful fellow Enfield owner. Most enjoyable.
I wonder if our cycling tracks have crossed 🤔
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks LE.

Nice vid mate, thanks.
I've been watching a lot of R.E 500 stuff lately cos I'm seriously considering downsizing from my GS650 twin and getting a used Bullet.
The thing is, I'm only 71 years old and maybe I should wait another decade or so!

I would recommend one to anyone. My 500 is a friend and good for the soul. I have never had a bike with so much character 🙂👍🏼
Brilliant episode my friend. And John is a great chap. I wish I will be able to ride my Enfield at his age. And it looks like he will have many more years of riding to come. Awesome

Nice to see you getting your top up dose of Devon, SB.
John's points on safely riding motorcycles are very relevant. I would like to add that older riders do tend to be constantly cautious because experience beats all when riding a motorcycle.
Another great vid.
I had to prepare myself for next week 🤣
Yes, John has obviously been doing something right.
Many thanks Jim, see you soon all being well 👍🏼
i'm amazed and chortled that the young 80 yo gentleman got his info from youtube reviews :) Well done and keep riding... I have the RE 411 scram.. but i adore the look and sound of the 350. Muz from Oz

That’s great . My first ride was as a six year old in 1964 . “ hang on tight!” He said . I think he went very slow that day .
I remember him being in awe of Steve McQueen when his stunt men refused to jump the fence in “ The Great Escape “ but Steve did it saying it was just a trick !
Time goes by so quickly so it’s lovely to see him having fun . Thank you again !
What a lovely memory that is. I’m sure he was extra careful.
Steve McQueen? We have a different hero today. One named John.

Yes, it was very interesting meeting and chatting with John. He speaks very eloquently and makes it easy listening.
I don’t know of the tv show, but I agree, he wouldn’t be out of place in something like that.

Wonderfully charismatic bikes that always raise a smile 😊

HE said he had a Harley Davidson but he had a bad leg & the weight of the bike was to much so got a trike Harley Davidson. That way he keep riding & not worry about dropping the bike cause of bad leg & he was no slouch either & gave it a bit of herb.
That’s brilliant! Good on him. I hope I’m riding at that age, even a trike 🙂👍🏼
Catch you dreckly mate 👊
That’s very nice of you Bimble, thank you mate.
No need to apologise. The weather brought numbers down but I think everyone enjoyed it. Shame you couldn’t make it. Hope you get fixed up soon. Black lung lurgy sounds savage 🥴
Yes sorry about the location.
It looks as though you have a new riding buddy for when you are out exploring on Ernie now 👍🏻
It was a pleasure to finally meet John, even if there was a computer screen in the way, and I will send him an email saying so later on.
Thanks for the mentions and the wave from the pair of you, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside over here in not so sunny Spain ❤️
Also, it was Incredibly diplomatic of you to avoid the cream tea conflict there Jeff, toasted teacakes, the diplomat's choice 😛
Ruby also noticed you having a sneaky stroke of that black doggo when you were parked up and is now feeling slightly jealous ! 😂 I suspect I will have to give her a sausage to help her get over the emotional trauma of it all ☹️
A lovely video. Two lovely bikes, two lovely blokes and beautiful villages and countryside. Fantastic. Well done Jeff and I hope this was the first of many rides for the pair of you. I think you make a great team !
Cheers Jeff & John,,
ER.
Not guilty my lord (on this occasion) 🤣
Many thanks for your kind words. I’m really pleased you enjoyed it.
Much love to you and Ruby 👋🏼🙂🍻
@@Saddlebags73 Oh really, we'll have to watch it again, Ruby could have sworn it was you ! Not that it matters now. She got her sausage out of it anyway 🤣
What set up were you using to record the interview with John ? The audio was really great, like you were both miced up to the same device or something. Asking for a friend, just in case he ever meets one of his viewers for a chat 😉.
You are right, John was very eloquent and enthusiastic in his answers, which made your job a bit easier. Still a top quality interview though and it does take two to interview as they say ( does anybody actually say that ? Probably not ! ).
Awesome job and I have already thanked John via email for the wave 👍🏻
Cheers SB,
El Otro.
I’m sure she deserved a sausage anyway 🙂
Trusty Tascam with a dead cat for the interview. Came out surprisingly well considering we were beside a river and a road 🤦🏻♂️ (noted for next time)
Well, if nobody says that, they should 🤣
Thanks El Otro 👍🏼
@@Saddlebags73 yes the vmcc. All sorts go, not just old stuff. I take my Thruxton or interceptor. Be good to meet up and have a ride.
@@brianculley260 I’ll have to make the effort. Thank you 👍🏼
The places with the best scenery always seem to come with 6 months worth of snow.
Ah yes, snow capped mountains are beautiful 😍
Lunacy 🤣
It’s good to hear you are still enjoying life on two wheels, albeit in quite different surroundings to ours.
Ride safe.
Great story 👍🏼 and another experienced motorcyclist, brilliant 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
As a himalayan owner ive recently purchased a classic 350...im very impressed ....my observation is how simular (yes i know that was the plan ) with the 350... but today i noticed the slight whine engine or gearbox...just like your 500...atb 👍👍
Oh congratulations! They are beautiful bikes that’s for sure. I wish you many safe and happy miles on it 🙂👍🏼
Hi Geoff/Jeff, I came to your channel through, John, when, recently, I bought his Honda Super Cub from him.
Thanks again and all the best
Jeff 👈🏼👌🏼🤣
@@Saddlebags73 Thanks, Jeff. ( now I know which spelling you use ) Will keep watching. I've watched a few of your 'rides through time' videos and enjoyed them. Keep it up.
Thank you kindly 🙏🏼🙂
Hi Geoff, I’m pleased that you like the Honda Cub. It’s just another dimension to riding to be enjoyed within it’s performance span. You will discover that when riding the Cub, you won’t see the wave or nod of acknowledgment from other bikers that you normally get. They have their reasons 😮 !
@@johnb7855 I have had a few nods in reply to nods from me. Not sure if I'd get one if I didn't nod first. The Cub's going well. I've had 184mpg so far, but now switched to E5 petrol ( blow the expense, ha ha ) so might improve on that from what I've read )
Love the look of your Classic. They are absolutely, beautiful. Keep on riding. There's a lot of us that would be very pleased to be riding into our 80's.
Hi Geoff/Jeff really enjoy your videos can you tell me where you got your mirrors from would like to get some for our Enfield many thanks
Hi Jane. I found them on eBay. Try the link below.

Hope that helps. All the best, Jeff.
I would like to have seen the lunch spot
Sorry to disappoint. I find filming that kind of thing a little awkward, and we were also in conversation with others we had met there.
Wasson Sbagsy boy, fair play to the Old Boy! Makes me feel quite sprightly, and gives me hope that I might follow in his wheel tracks ! See you next week if we're spared ! Geddon Pard and DFD!
Geddon Pard. He’s an inspiration eh! I hope to do the same.
Look forward to seeing you next week. Safe journey up, DFD 🙂👍🏼
Great video, Saddlebags. That bike sure looks sweet. But you must correct John on one important point: it's not the speed that kills, it's the sudden stopping.
I wonder if he's coming to the social ride. I'm really looking forward to that.
Many thanks NooB 🙏🏻
John did suggest he might be coming to the social ride. If he does you’ll have opportunity to correct him yourself 🤣

Please change the handle bar of next gen classic to 500 cc classic type handle in ur hand
Love the way Ernie looks and although the classic 350 is gorgeous. Could you comment on build quality Ernie verses Classic 350 please and your preference. I'm leaning toward Ernie, and both are still available in OZ. Many thanks for your channel and opinion.
Hi 👋🏼
Build quality is very much the same for both bikes.
@@Saddlebags73 Many thanks! I value your advice. Steve
@@stevewatling1777 you’re very welcome 👍🏼
Some ansum video pard, naturally he would be a gentleman when John is his name. 😁
Haha I knew we’d get along, being a John 🤣
Thanks Janner 👍🏼
Greetings from Switzerland
Hello 👋🏼 and thank you!
Fun watching. Mind if I ask where did you get the bar end mirrors?
So SB73 do you see any value in swapping your 500 for the 350?
No, I love my 500. I can’t imagine ever selling it. If I didn’t have one though, I’d be tempted by the 350 👍🏼
I wonder if anyone can tell me what was the name of the club that he was involved in forming for training new riders, and are there any similar groups nationwide?
I like that, a lot 👌🏼
Excellent news. I think I shall join you in immortality.
See you soon Paul. Have a safe ride down from ‘up north’ 🙂
Very enjoyable video thanks - are you thinking of selling your 500 now ?
Thank you very much. No, never. I adore my 500 🙂
@@Saddlebags73 Good to hear ! just went out into chaos of Sydney traffic on my 500 and came back feeling refreshed and relaxed - how does that work ?
Haha, being a country bumpkin I have no idea how that works. The magic of Royal Enfield must work in all environments 👍🏼
Hope that helps 👍🏼
very good ride out ;;; even if its in a foreign country ;;
Ha thanks Simon. Dangerous territory for me 🤪
Wiltshire man is a YT channel you could have a meet with, Enfield owner as is his often featured friend Colin.
I do subscribe to Wiltshire man. I doubt very much that he knows of me though. It would be an interesting meet though 👍🏼
I ordered the alcyon black
Oh splendid! Congratulations. I wish you many happy miles. Cracking little bikes.
